Starting with the cons, the wait for cars can be longer than other rideshares or taxis, and the price can be higher to about double on average to other rideshare competitors. A 10-15 minute ride came out to $32, which is typically like $15-17 with Uber or Lyft without tip. That leads into the pros which is you don't have to tip! You know the price straight up and it is what it is. You, of course, have privacy with no awkward conversation, and you have complete control over climate controls, music, windows, etc. The app allows you to select the climate and legroom you'd like before you're even picked up. Since you can sit in the front or back you can have the seats adjusted to give more room for the front or back. There is a touchscreen in the back seat that controls the music and which you can select theirs or your own. The ride was very safe, the car could detect everything around it at all times, but the ride will be a little slower on average than a human driver. When the car arrives at its destination it gives you plenty of time, and even gives you the option to adjust the dropoff point if getting out where stopped is unsafe, and control over the trunk. Honestly, it was an effortless experience, and while the price is a premium, the benefits can be argued to be worth it. Will definitely be open to riding in one again soon!

I'd see these in LA and trip out how there's no driver. Often the viral video or joke of Waymo's getting stuck and not being able to get past certain situations on the road. While vacationing in the bay, we had to try it... just for the experience. During dinner in the south of market area, downloaded the app and after we ate scheduled the Waymo to pick us up. Sure enough within 3 minutes a Jaguar I-Pace arrived and pulled up... however it parked across the street from where we were standing (maybe it was a safer spot). Initials of the requester showed at the top of the siren indicating that was our ride. It drove us through Chinatown and back to our Airbnb. I appreciated the pre-recorded messaging played throughout the ride, and it actually put me at ease. Probably safer than some Uber rides!

At the time this was built I'm sure it was much more than adequate to provide service to the limited amount of vehicles. With over 70 years....Doyle Drive is due for an overhaul....I hope the new Doyle Drive will ease the traffic jams from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Marina. This is a nice drive and very scenic route. Once upon a time Doyle Drive would probably have been 5 stars.....due to the growing demand of vehicles for travel across the bridge and Doyle Drive it is time for an upgrade. I can still remember my grandparents telling me stories of when the Golden Gate Bridge was being built! I still drive along DD 4-5 times per week and the new earthquake retrofit construction is coming along swimmingly, literally. I say that because if you're not careful driving along here you'll end up crashing over the edge and having your car plunge into the embankments below! Why is it now even more dangerous? #1 Ever since they removed the tollbooths and toll-takers on the Golden Gate Bridge many drivers heading southbound will "floor it" and speed recklessly through the toll lanes at 60, 70, 80 mph!!! Why? Maybe they feel if they go fast enough the license plate cameras won't catch them to mail them their toll bill (kinda likely). Maybe they're in a rush to get to the yuppy bars in Cow Hollow or to Off The Grid in Fort Mason (kinda likely). Maybe they need to get quickly on to 19th Avenue, where the speed limits are strictly enforced (kinda likely). Or maybe they're being selfish, clueless, and inconsiderate douche-bag motorists who don't really give a damn about the safety of others (VERY likely). Whatever the case, if you are merging on to Doyle Drive from Baker Beach, Chrissy Field, or the 19th Avenue/Marina District detour, you are now faced with speeding cars who won't let you freaking merge! There are serious accidents ready to happen here!!! #2 The UNENFORCED 35 mph speed limit. I'm sorry but this is a joke. No one observes this and, if you do, you are tailgated and honked unmercifully by other drivers. Hello?! Are you listening CHP? Are you listening Golden Gate Bridge Patrol? Are you listening United States Park Police? I mean, why even bother having it if you don't monitor it? Oh wait, maybe because it IS a dangerous curving stretch of freeway that's under construction and cars could go plunging over the thin guardrails!!! Add to that, the only time they seem to enforce the 45 mph speed limit on the Bridge is after there's been a tragic, fatal, multi car traffic accident. Shah. #3 Tourists...gotta love em, gotta hate em. Yesterday a car full of them decided they didn't want to visit Sausalito so they f**king stopped their rental mini-van, dead in the middle of northbound Doyle Drive, did a u-turn, and drove against traffic to get off the freeway. They were laughing about it. The cars that had to avoid head-on collisions and veer out their way were not! I know the residents of the Marina District don't like a lot of signs in their neighborhood, none in fact, but there needs to be more signage letting drivers who are not familiar with the area know that they are approaching one of the last few turn-offs before getting on to the Golden Gate Bridge, both from Marina Blvd and Lombard Street. I mean really now...It would take just a little more to make this truly dynamic roadway a safer and more enjoyable drive for everyone!!!

Once were on the buses the drivers have been helpful and we see notice of what the next stop coming is. We bought a clipper card for a few days unlimited at Walgreens. The sales clerk wasn't too knowledgeable nor helpful. The visitor center so does how to upload it to our wallet and now were using our phones to pay for transportation. It took a couple of tries before we were able to work the app properly. Would love to know how to play the passes want to wait at the stop. Also sad some are camped & living at the bus stops.

But if you want to endure the bus line you might try to pretend that this is the 2Fast2Furious version of the Muni. Because California St is narrow you'll typically be riding the smallish buses where the drivers like to put the bus in a low gear and speed up the small hills like they're racing Dom Toretto. This wouldn't be a problem if you're sitting down but the express bus is typically packed like it's the last ride out of the Fall of Saigon. I've seen old ladies getting tossed which is not unbelievable as I've gone fallen myself. If you need to cheer yourself up, pretend that you're riding the 1AX during zombie apocalypse from Dawn of the Dead. This will keep you entertained when a swarm of people sprint after the bus when the bus starts to skip stops because it's too full. If they do catch up to the bus at a red light because they'll angry start beating on the door which is kind of frightening. But instead of wanting to eat out your eyeballs, they trying to do something more hideous, like show up to work on time. If you're a senior/handicapped you can pretend that you're in Wall Street. Keep your eyes peeled and remember that everyone is a crook You'd think that professionals going Downtown weren't a bunch of A-holes, but they'll steal seat in the handicapped/senior section making a poor old man stand in a heartbeat. If you get creeped out by a weird dirty old man in a suit, just pretend he's Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. If he does show you his lollipop, I'd recommend that you take out a pair of scissors and pretend you're in filming the documentary on Lorena Bobbit in "Bobbetized". Good luck!

I had no idea what all this "AX" and "BX" Muni bus stuff was about until I moved to the Richmond…read more It turns out that these special buses are the closest thing to a BART train that the Richmond District ("RiDi") has. If you work downtown and live in the RiDi, you better get to know these buses, or you'll just be the chump on the regular 31 Balboa/38 Geary that gets the hour-long, reasonably stinky and ghetto tour of the city on the way to work. The 31 AX ain't great (I rarely get a seat in the morning, and some broads refuse to move to the back of the bus when it gets crowded), but it sure beats the regular 31 Balboa. FYI, the 31AX starts at the beach near the Safeway and the "Last local stop" is Balboa and Park Presidio. The next stop after *that* is Sansome & Montgomery. Not bad, right? Here's the weird thing though: I'm on the morning (and often evening) 31AX buses, with the same people, almost every day. All of us are going to our jobs in the FiDi or home to our bitchin' flats in the RiDi. I know half of their names since they all wear their hoity-toity company badges. Okay, you work for yahoo/stubhub/charles schwab! you're-so-fucking-cool-and-employed. We get it! But none of us ever talk to each other, even though we often see each other twice a day. I have used both locally, most frequently picking the H up at Gilman so I don't have to bike up the hill. However, for the first time, I actually commuted into the city on the transbay bus line. It was friendlier, faster, cheaper ($3.50), cleaner, and cushier (with wi-fi) than BART. Although I am glad I am only commuting for the week (as I enjoy being able to bike to work in Berkeley even if I don't have the endurance for the return), it is nice to know getting to the city during commute hours is so easy. And it is nice that I can also ride it locally when needed ...

It's a complete value exchange for all parties and everyone really benefits (I save time + toll and they get a free ride into the city.) Drop off point in the city is the first exit - Fremont and you'll see a bunch of cars dropping their casual carpoolers off too. I started a new job by the ATT Ball park and tried taking public transportation there and it was taking over an hour as I had to do Bart + MUNI or Ferry + MUNI as the walk was a tad far from both of those. What I've learned so far as the driver: - You'll see a line of people waiting to be picked up by the Alameda fire station on Encinal and Park right across from the KFC/park - The sweet spot of picking people up is 7-8am. I personally try to get there between 7:50-8:10am and the one time I came around 8:20am it was too late! No one was there and I had to go into the city by myself.. literally took double the time so lesson learned - With casual carpool average time with getting into the city is around 30 minutes - There are etiquette rules on the website but most of it is just common sense.. respect the car+drive and each other - I have NPR on as neutral thing to listen to on the radio - There is no small talk - most people get into the car and use their phones or fall asleep (totally fine by me - I rarely have seen the same folks multiple times and we don't need to know what each other's name is and what they do) - When there's a long line I tend to pick up 3 people since I have space in my car - The website mentions that sometimes people will offer a few dollars to pitch in with gas or the toll (discounted at $3.00 vs $6.00) but no one has ever offered and its fine but in case you were expecting it.. Since I'm the driver I don't have to worry about how to get back from the city like the people that hitch a ride but from my understanding people will BART, AC Transit, Ferry, etc. There is no casual carpool on the way back to Alameda but I believe there may be in other East Bay cities - something to check out on the website. Carpool isn't a huge advantage on the way back as not all entrances from the city has a carpool entry.
