I play a lot of tennis, and a tennis friend recommended OAP to me back in October 2025. I was new to acupuncture and I came for a first 3-visit special. Since then, I've never turned back! Both Evelyn and Sarah are great. I feel well taken care of. Every time, I walk in with a new ailment lol because tennis takes a toll on the whole body! They are always there to listen and take special attention to my concerns. Sarah has even given additional recommendations of what to do outside of acupuncture based on the issues I'm describing, and I truly appreciate it! Cash or check is preferred; credit card is also an option but with an additional fee and an online form? (I've never paid credit card haha). You can also do a 5 or 10 prepaid treatment card. I love the sliding scale, as it works for those on a tight budget - but please give more if you can! Booking an appointment online is easy. This location is convenient for me, but there is also the Grand location available with more practitioners and more seating! I'm impressed that only two people run the show here at Laurel location. I believe there are 8 chairs here, of various inclines; you can grab community pillows to get yourself in a comfortable position to stay about 30 minutes up to 1 hour! I always want to maximize and do 1 hour haha. I've come with a lot of forearm/wrist/hand issues, so it's basically a requirement for me to prop my arms up on pillows - otherwise, they fall asleep during the treatment! It's a nice 1 hour out of the day to just listen to podcasts; I usually just fall asleep attempting to listen to podcasts lol. I do think that acupuncture has been a big part of my injury healing journey (of course, in addition to rest and rehab exercises) and I'll happily continue coming here. read more

OAP is a gem I have been enjoying the tranquill healing service here for 8+ years battling some siatic pain, Evelyn hs been a great grounding spirit and is a very confident and compitant healer. Even during the pandemic they were there for me with 6' distancing but still providing loving care. With thier sliding scale price structure they are truly a community service. The space is very communial zero gravity chairs that are super comfy, i have yet to not completely know asleep for the hour during treatment.. My first time coming here and I loved it. It's a safe, quiet and comfortable environment. Gave me a quick explanation of how the place works and got asked what I needed. Pillows and blankets are available for you to feel comfortable which I loved. Sat down got my needles inserted on my pain area and ended up taking a nap which felt so relaxing and peaceful, they walk by every couple of mins to check if you need anything also. I left this place feeling so relaxed I couldn't even explain the feeling, all I know is that I haven't felt like that in a long time and I needed it. I have been coming here for a few years, but most recently for treatment of arthritis pain in my ankle and stress, sometimes for tight neck and shoulder pain from too much computer work. My therapist recommended checking this place out. I used to pay like $75 for 1on1 acupuncture, but since keeping a closer eye on my finances, this more economical option seems a better fit. Can't beat the price, that is for certain. There is like a $15 initial paperwork fee, but this is waived if you commit to at least 5 treatments. Individually, there is a sliding scale payment method that starts at $15. Committing to 5+ takes the price down to like $13 each. The chairs are pretty comfy and they offer blankets and pillows. About 11 total chairs. Appointments are recommended although they do accept walk ins as well. Tell the acupuncturist how long you'd like to meditate or snooze with needles in and they will wake you when that time comes. Love all the staff, they seem to rotate weekends when I usually come in. Great communication and they can focus on anything that ails you. The only downside is that you can hear other clients shuffling around a lot and some whispering between staff and clients. Certainly acceptable and expected in a community setting. One area they could improve is to only squeeze walk ins or those late to their appointments in after those that are on time for their booked appointments are serviced. Where do I begin? My first treatment was yesterday and I had no idea what to expect. Friends have suggested acupuncture as a healing modality and I think I was a bit apprehensive because needles are involved. Well, after the two years that we have had I got over it really quick. The treatment area has reclining lawn chairs that are covered with sheets, and the have a variety of fleecy blankets, bolsters and such to help keep you warm while you are relaxing and receiving a treatment. I LOVE LOVE LOVE these people and the place really feels like home. I've got all kinds of health problems that mainstream western medicine has essentially shrugged their shoulders at and gave me a big ol' "we dunno" face on more than one occasion and left it at that. So I started looking for help elsewhere. I had tried acupuncture only once before and had a wonderful experience but I'm no longer employed and couldn't afford to see a private acupuncturist. A couple of friends told me about the Oakland Acupuncture Project so I decided to check them out. I was blown away by how affordable, easy, and comfortable the place is! This was back in January of 2011 and I've been going at least once a week ever since. Allow me to list some of my most favorite things (in no particular order): * INEXPENSIVE: $15-$35 per treatment. You pay what you think you can afford. And you can pay as you go, for several sessions at once, and they're totally cool if you forgot your payment and just ask you to bring it in next time. SAY WHAT?! Btw, quick tip, they accept check or cash only. * EASY TO SCHEDULE: Their online scheduling system is so frick'n easy and you can usually schedule a session that day if you want to. The booking system will even email you a reminder a couple of days before your appointment to remind you it's coming up. * SUPER FRIENDLY: I've worked with a few different practioners at OAP and every single one of them has been so friendly, laid back and yet professional and clearly competent. Though I must admit a soft spot in my heart for Whitney Thorniley, one of the co-owners of the business. She rocks my world. * SO MUCH FLUFFY: I love building a little cocoon for myself in their super comfortable reclining chairs. They've got warm blankets, standard pillows, and round pillows... and lots of them. They're all regularly laundered too. * PARKING: Free and easy (at the Laurel location). BAM. Also right next to a bus line it that's your thing. One of the practioners has also begun offering discounts during her shift if you arrive by bike. * COMMUNITY STYLE: I love that I can get my treatment with my best friend in the chair next to me. Also, because of the way it's set-up, you can stay relaxed in your chair (and even fall asleep) for as long as you'd like. My particular favorite is the Yin Qiao Jie Du Wan, which I affectionately refer to as the magic beans. If you take this stuff when you first feel like you might be getting sick, you get to escape the evil sickly demons. I'm a skeptic by nature and generally don't fall for placebos, so when this stuff worked three times in a row, I was sold. It's now something I always have around at home to ward off any cold that dares try to invade my body. Take THAT stupid germs! * TWO LOCATIONS: They recently opened up a new location near Lake Merritt. How's that for convenience? The set-up there is nice and cozy too. Only downside is you have to pay for parking. Well, unless you're a gimp like me and have a disability parking placard. Then you're golden. Also, again near the bus lines and easily bikeable. I started going several weeks ago for back/pelvic pain, as well as uber-brain-craziness-and-mood-swings caused by Sir-Kicks-A-Lot taking up space in the hot tub that is my uterus. I realized that I was "officially uber-brain-crazy" when Mr. Cara was kind enough to bring home a burrito for me to eat for dinner, only to watch me melt down into a hysterical mess because it was stuffed with pinto beans, lettuce, sour cream, cold cheese, and guacamole, when what I had REALLY wanted was plain, REFRIED beans and MELTED cheese and nothing else inside that tortilla. Like I said, totally brain-crazy. And wouldn't you know that he actually went out and got me another? What a great freaking guy. But I digress! If you're skeeved out by the thought of sitting in a chair or putting your head on a pillow that has been occupied by other people, stop reading now. If you can't relax and get your groove on unless you're in a room by yourself, stop reading now. If you prefer a more clinical setting for your acupuncture needs, stop reading now. The OAP takes on a much more traditional, community-based approach, utilizing a shared space for treatment, and sliding-scale for their fees. Don't let this give you the impression that they don't know what they're doing, or that this is some kind of "discount" clinic. I've been treated by both Roselle and Whitney, and they are thorough, kind, and knowledgeable - and I am absolutely feeling the benefits. AMEE-ZUNG. This place is amazing and I wish I'd found it sooner. I have been battling a horrifically painful disease for about 10 years now. This week, for the first time since I was 17, I was able to ride a bike without pain. It was an amazing feeling. This is the time of year when the trees are at full bloom and living in Alameda by the water molds seems to be everywhere. I'm susceptible to the worse allergies and I eat ricolas and cough drops like popcorn. In addition I have a morning cocktail of zyrtec, Sudafed 12 hr plus a sinus flush with my trusty neti-pot. Not my favorite time of the year. My girlfriend suggested trying acupuncture as a possible remedy. She suggested the Oakland Acupuncture Project because she went there for some tennis elbow from playing badminton. I had a free Saturday morning and looking at some Yelp reviews I saw a lot of positive reviews. I visited the on-line site and schedule an appointment. I thought I would see acupuncture doctors such as Mr. Chan, Mr. Wong etc but instead they listed names such as Roselle, Kait and Whitney. On my first visit I filled out the paperwork-typical "What kind of health issues do you have"? Fortunately I'm in good health with no strange issues. After that an attractive acupuncture therapist Roselle gave me briefing and then showed me to the room. She said grab some pillows and blankets, relax in the chair, and make your self comfortable. She also requested for me roll my pants up to your knees. It is best to wear sweats or shorts. Acourse you have to remove your socks and shoes. Gentleman make sure you take care of your dogs because the therapist might be placing some needles on them. After taking my pulse Roselle placed the needles on my arms, legs feet- my dogs were taken care of and ears. I thought it would be uncomfortable but it wasn't. No bleeding and no weird pain. My girlfriend said if I was not relaxed the therapist would place a needle in my forehead. Wow I received a needle in my forehead and two at the top of my head. I relaxed in the chair for half an hour and I could not believe how relaxed I was. The soothing music, the clean room and the hepa-filtered air. Ahhhhh!! Roselle said I could relax longer then the half hour with the needles in me and she also offered me herbal tea. Cost are fairly inexpensive- $15.00 to $35.00 a visit plus extra cost if you want some Chinese herbal treatment. They only take cash or check, unfortunately no Visa or Mastercard. A very Zen like experience...I will be back for more treatments to help me with my allergies. read more

Whitney was very knowledgeable and extremely effective in targeting my problem areas and providing instant relief. After the needles were inserted, I had the most relaxing and peaceful nap I have ever had. After an hour of pure bliss and relaxation, I opened my eyes and gave Whitney a nod to let her know I was ready to go. I have scheduled appointments here for a few weeks and I have only good things to say about it. The sliding scale fee $15 - 35 is a huge selling point. But I also dig the practitioners - Whitney is very caring and has a real positive energy. They seem with the needle placement to know the right level of intensity. The space is peaceful and the chairs they use are comfortable. The only minor negative I can think of is that they only have one massage table. Since I have back problems, I would prefer access to a massage table to lie flat on. After they put the needles in you get to stay for anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour - needless to say, a lot of people end up falling asleep there, I usually catch up on my mid week nap while I'm there. Highly recommended, especially if you are new to acupuncture (since they are so nice there) or are interested in exploring multiple acupuncture treatment and affordability is a priority. read more

So I have passed by this place during my commute to work so many times. I kept saying I would look into it. I went to their site and then yelp and saw all the good reviews and still another 6 months went by. That is until last week. I went to their site and scheduled an appointment which took about 2 minutes tops. Having never had acupuncture before I was a little nervous about the appointment however once I walked in the door I was immediately put at ease. The sitting area has filtered water and a variety of tea to drink if you wish. Cait came out pretty quick, introduced herself and gave me brief tour and rundown, and pretty much answering most all my questions in the process. I didn't have a specific injury or illness that I came for and have no special needs so we breezed through the medical history questions quickly. There are 3 community areas, one with 6 seats, and the others with 2 each. I grabbed 2 arm pillows and settled in, she came in and gave me a rolled up towel for my neck and got to work. I am in no way afraid of needles so I didn't think it would be a problem, what I didn't expect was to not feel anything at all. Throughout the time she asked how I was feeling and if anything hurt. I told her that if I hadn't been watching her users them I wouldn't even know they were there. I was amazed, the next thing I know I'm having the best nap of my life. I was on break at work so she woke me up at 45minutes in. I was feeling relaxed and renewed. I enjoyed it so much that I had my second appointment yesterday after with Sabrina and am still floating. I started acupuncture in my second trimester, to help ease the discomforts pregnancy brings. I was experiencing fluid retention, anxiety, trouble sleeping and low energy. Acupuncture has been AMAZING. It takes a few sessions to feel the difference but I have been Sticking with two treatments a week and it has been A great help and comfort to me. I'm so grateful to the friend who told me about the OAP. I've had headaches all my adult life, every day, and consequently have eaten lots of Excedrin every day. I'd tried acupuncture in the past, as well as standard western medicine doctors, but nothing worked. A lifetime of Excedrin left me in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer. The ulcer seems to be healing, but I was desperate to find something to help me with headaches, since I'm off aspirin and its cohorts for the rest of my life. Not only has the OAP treatment stopped the headaches, the treatments leave me relaxed and peaceful. And the sliding scale payments make it possible for me to go twice a week. I used to come here until I left for college 4 years ago and since I've moved back to Alameda, the staff have changed but the awesome atmosphere hasn't. They create such a calming and peaceful atmosphere, I actually look forward to being poked by needles each week. The needles- really thin, not vaccine type needs at all. It really just feels like you're being poked, and the needles are inserted very shallowly. Even needle-phobia people should feel comfortable here. If it is your first time, the acupuncturists will take note on your potential nervousness and go easy on the needles. The works- a living-room sized room has a row of ~6 reclining chairs plus two smaller rooms with 2 chairs each. There are pillows and blankets on the wall for you to get comfortable. The acupuncturist will come up to you (I'm currently seeing Cait who is amazing) and ask what they can do for you; you explain your issues and she takes your pulse (not for the reason a western doctor checks it, but she checks to hear the rhythm and depth of it to know your deficiencies). She puts the needles in, and it induces a nice nap :) when you start feeling restless, you're done and just make eye contact with her so she can take the needles out. I'm usually there about 1 hr. My treatment- I've been having trouble falling asleep and sleeping in since around last winter, and stress from work wasn't helping the sleep deprivation. I went in for treatment a few weeks ago and Cait helped me out. She's so friendly and makes you feel right at home. She also recommended me some herbal medication ($10 for any herbs, 100 pills per bottle) to help me fall asleep, and I've been coming back about once a week, pretty typical frequency. Pricing: Sliding scale from $15-$35; you pay what you can, so it's super affordable. I highly recommend OAP for whatever chronic issues you may have, and you can make an appointment on their site. It is true that this is not the "usual" acupuncture spot. They keep things efficient and bare-bones, focusing on what matters - the acupuncture. The business model was started in Portland and is known as community acupuncture - the idea is to have a basic conversation and get comfortable, get the needles in and then rest for as long as you want -- and then to keep this process affordable enough that folks can come back again soon. They keep it real. Their belief in what they do is so genuine it's beautiful. I am thoroughly impressed. This place has changed my way of looking at health care. All the acupuncturists I have had treatment from have been excellent - Whitney, Roselle, Sarah, and Cait. I would recommend all of them. And I would recommend the others too, because I trust Whitney and Roselle, who are the co founders of OAP. Plus they are all about Oakland love, and a few are Oakland A's fans, and that makes me love them even more. You can also get access to two massage therapists through their website. The minor discomfort (underline minor) you might experience is nothing compared to the pain you might already be suffering from.
