Wow, my first appointment here was WILD and so different from the other reviewers.  The first 45 minutes I was here I was placed in a room and made to watch a Dr. Oz clip about antioxidants. Then they made me take an "antioxidant skin test" associated with a notorious supplement MLM (Nu Skin). The rest of the time I was left alone, which gave me plenty of time to look up what the skin test was and how it's misused to convince people to buy supplements.  Then for about 10-15 minutes there was an intake where I was asked bunch of questions and had pictures taken. Finally for 40 minutes I received treatment. Less than half the time of my 90 minute appointment.  Honestly I was really disappointed with my visit here and won't be returning. The treatment was fine, but for the price and actual time spent I could have gone to my massage therapist and not have had to watch Dr. Oz. read more

It is a rare thing to find a true healer: Someone that can look at the body holistically, discover where your pain originates, and treat it in the moment. If you live with pain, you understand what a blessing it is to find some relief and how important it is to connect with a practitioner you trust. Chris Randle at Oakland Community Acupuncture is one such healer. I ended up at OCA after a couple coworkers referred me. I had been to acupuncture before and had little to no results, but they assured me Chris would be different. "This guy is the real deal. He treats the Warriors and the 49ers," they said. I later found out that he practices acupuncture in an emergency room setting too, which blows my mind. I found his credentials impressive and decided to give it a try. I have chronic back and shoulder pain, but one night at work I tweaked my shoulder and couldn't move my arm, so I made my first appointment the next day. From the second I walked in I felt at peace. The clinic smells like a spa and Chris has such a friendly and calming disposition. After asking a bunch of questions and testing my arm out in different ways he had me lay down and went to work sticking needles in me. I sensed a sports medicine approach. He explained everything while he was working and had me totally at ease. It's like he was solving a puzzle and thinking out loud along the way. You can tell that he loves what he does and is at the top of his field. The competence, and level of care, is profound. The needles do not hurt. You feel heavy when they are in. It's a strange sensation but not painful. Once he left the room I fell into a deep sleep. I woke up so relaxed. When he pulled the needles out and asked me to move my arm I was amazed. I could move it in any direction with zero pain. Just like that! An hour to get pain free. I couldn't believe it. I've been going regularly to treat my chronic pain, as he made short work of my acute shoulder injury. One of the many things I love is that he addresses the whole body as a system, rather than just the areas in pain. When we dove more into my shoulder, he told me the pain was coming from my pelvis. And sure enough, treatment of the pelvis helped my shoulder. He also emphasizes the importance of nutrition and proper movement, really taking a holistic approach. I honestly can't recommend him enough. On a day to day basis, I am more pain free than I have ever been in my life. Finding this practice has been a true blessing. I started seeing Jennifer Taylor at Oakland Community Acupuncture for a knee injury in June 2020, two months after I fell HARD on the sidewalk. I was in constant pain, wasn't walking correctly, and felt that, between my injury and the pandemic, my leg was atrophying! I had tried: walking slowly, staying off my knee and leg, CBD salve (instant, but temporary relief), massaging it myself, and physical therapy (some strengthening, but no pain relief). My gf turned me onto this place and I've got to say, judging from my first session, I can't recommend Oakland Community Acupuncture high enough. I am a senior citizen with an auto immune disease, sacral bulging discs, and degenerative scoliosis. For months I have been hobbling around in pain with significant mobility impairment. Big Recommendation! I want to give a big shoutout to Noosha Kahali and her acupuncture skills! I came to OCA a few months ago prior to going on a big hiking vacation in Utah with my son, seeking treatment for my injured knee, an injury I had sustained from years of overuse playing ultimate frisbee, and an injury that had the potential of bumming-out our trip if I couldn't hike very far to enjoy the many vistas. I thought my knee would ultimately require surgery to relieve the pain and that acupuncture, at best, would provide some minor relief to get me through the vacation. I can't say enough good things about this business! I have been suffering from tendinitis for almost 4 months. I kept thinking it would get better. The last straw was when I found myself unable to tuck the fitted sheet under the mattress, it was time. I started seeing Chris about 2-3 years ago after Ky left and he's AMAZING! I can see why the Golden States Warriors see him as he's nothing short of magical. I have a neuroscience background and he's been able to explain all the musculoskeletal mechanisms so I understand what's going on and am continuously intrigued. I have moved back to Boston and I still try to fit an appointment or 2 during my visits. A few months ago I had a tailbone injury and I became immediately more mobile after being treated. My partner was amazed that I no longer needed help getting up from being seated. I came to OCA because my lower hip was having constant dull pain for the past month. Dr. Amy narrowed down the pain and actually gave me a thorough diagnosis before I went to the hospital. She pin pointed the problem and treated it excellently! Then I came back 2 weeks later for a follow up treatment, but now my right side lower back area was acting up (I'm a contractor who's been lifting heavy stuff for years). Dr. Amy did her thing! She attacked the issue with great alacrity and aggressive gentleness. Because I was having spasms and acute pain, she knew what had to be done and she handled it! After the treatment she schooled me on some subtle exercises that would help me everyday and relayed the message to Dr. Chris that I needed a Chi Jong type routine to keep me loose and mobile. The 5 star reviews are not flukes or exaggerations... The staff at OCA are friendly, but this review is specifically about Chris. My husband was in a lot of pain when we first saw Chris nearly 2 yrs ago. At the time of the appt my husband did not care if he lived and could not drive because he was always dizzy. He had a bad motorcycle accident nearly 20 yrs prior that required multiple surgeries and he suffered from extreme chronic pain that was previously managed by an opioid prescription. His pain was made worse by another accident and became unmanageable. From the first appt Chris was just simply fantastic. He took the time to listen, explained his approach and performed a very thorough review/exam. He was also honest and clear that part of the responsibility laid with my husband to do his part at home (e.g. specific stretching exercises) to help with the progress. Chris is thoughtful and kind with excellent bedside manners. Besides being a genuinely nice and caring person, he delivers. Within the first appt Chris was able to eliminate a nagging, constant pain that ran along my husband's leg and reduce his overall pain substantially. We were grateful and amazed! We left that first visit with pain relief and a plan to help improve and manage my husband's pain. I attended all of his appts at the beginning since he was too dizzy to drive himself. With each visit his pain decreased as Chris addressed the underlying issues that caused them. I was able to observe the misalignment of his spine and the depression at certain areas. Those improved with time as did the dizziness that he was able to drive himself to appointments. Fast forward to Spring 2019 and we relocated to Southern California and were not able to complete the entire pain improvement plan outlined with Chris. Moving away from his care has turned out to be devastating as we have not been able to find a practitioner who has measured up Chris. We've jumped from one acupuncturist to another, traditional doctors have not been helpful and we feel defeated. We wish Chris would relocate to Southern California (if only!). He is greatly missed! Nearly 10 years after I started going to OCA, taking a break just 'cause life gets busy, I came back to OCA while recovering from a major shoulder injury. The Physical Therapy provided by my insurance was helping a little but improvement was slow and I had a hunch that with his sports medicine background (Chris worked for the Warriors), he might have some options for me. Coming in 2-3 times a week for a short while worked wonders - in a couple months I made huge strides in range of motion! Chris looked at where I was each visit and customized the treatment. It wasn't always easy for me because the injury itself was painful, but Chris was very respectful of my limits and TBH I was very motivated, so as long as I could take it, I did it and that was my choice. Chris worked wonders - the difference even at the beginning and end of a visit was often significant. He explained the anatomy to me and offered resources to help me work on stuff between treatments. I have had 3 weekly visits with Jennifer for chronic neck and back pain for from injuries in a car accident 30 years ago. Been using exercise, heat and cold, and medications for years to no avail. Honestly I did not think it would ever be as flexible as before .I would have been happy with just the pain relief and the little more flexilibty that he was able to give me gave me earlier in my treatment. Two Sundays ago, shooting back pain developed out of nowhere. I burst into tears walking. I called anyone on Yelp who was open at 4pm on Sunday...which is hardly anyone. On Monday, Chris was the first person who could see me that day and fit me in; he was as concerned and caring in person as he was on the phone. I nearly cried getting out of my car. But after my first session, which involved acupuncture, electroacupuncture, heat, and cupping, the pain diminished dramatically. It was my first experience with acupuncture, and I was amazed. Later that night, I thought my sitting around had undone the session and the pain was even worse than before (12 out of 10). I swore off acupuncture and was mad I wasted my money. But in the morning after a decent night's sleep, the pain was at a 1.5 (of 10). I obeyed the regimen Chris gave me: I had 3-4 appointments and took high doses of quality fish oil; epsom salt baths; and a sweet friend did some pool PT with me. Most of my pain was gone within a week. This week, I'm back to riding my bike. I still need to be careful, but I can't believe how effective the treatments were. They take insurance...well, they didn't take mine (Kaiser), but they may take yours. I highly recommend. read more

I have been dealing with foot pain since the middle of June of this year so I went to my Western medicine doctors they did x-rays, they prescribed cortisone pills, gave me a cortisone injection between my toes and from the middle of June to the beginning of August I found no real relief and so I decided to try acupuncture. I called OCA as a result of a referral from a friend, my first appt was with Kai and he quickly assessed my symptoms and came up with a diagnosis and treatment plan. I had my first treatment that same visit and as soon as we were done, I stood up and and felt immediate relief in my right foot. My husband and I both have issues with our bodies. My issue is sports related and my husband's issue is work related. OCA uses various approaches to address a range of issues, which is a plus. This means that we can both go to the same place and share information about consistency and which treatments we find to be the most useful. My husband called and was able to get an appointment right away. The center is clean and has a very nice vibe. The staff is knowledgeable and attentive. The prices are competitive - $50 for the initial consultation and $70 for each treatment. I also dived in and took the skin scan to find out that my fruit and vegetable intake is too low. Ky was able to talk to me about how I can effectively address my deficiency and which supplements will work best for my intense training schedule. I was treated by Chris Randle after I was I car accident and got a concussion. My friend recommended acupuncture for helping heal my head injury. The results were remarkable and almost immediate-- my headache stopped and did not return. Looking for an acupuncturist can be intimidating. Especially if you are new to Chinese Medicine. Luckily I stumbled upon OCA at the Grand Lake Farmer's Market one Saturday afternoon. I've been to OCA for back and knee pain and I always feel better after a session. After seeing my doctor, having x-rays taken and then a cortisone shot, my back pain persisted. My doctor was hesitant about referring me to a chiropractor (he said he's never heard of a chiropractor that said an x-ray was normal!) so I decided to try acupuncture. After one acupuncture and cupping session, I felt the difference. I was able to stretch my back without as much pain. On my follow up session I mentioned knee pain and Chris worked on my knee. Two days later the pain in my knee is gone and I can walk without pain!!! Acupunture isn't always a "quick-fix" and can take multiple sessions, so you have to stick with it if you want better results. If you are thinking about trying acupuncture, I highly recommend OCA. I found OCA here on Yelp...but first a little background. I've had acupuncture before with another practitioner in 2005 and with a year of treatment, I had no more back pain and haven't had any since. Amazing!! I am a total believer. So on to the present. I live in the Pill Hill neighborhood and there are many acupuncture places around. Didn't think much about it until the last couple of months when my shoulder started bothering me with some serious muscle spasms. Then I noticed I was having a limited range of motion - oh crap!! That was interfering with my motorcycle riding so now it was time to act. I scoped out a few places while I was at work and had pretty much decided on a couple of businesses with OCA being one of them. Ever had that little voice tell you where to go or what to do? Yeah, me too, and that little voice made that decision for me later that day. I made the appointment and met with Chris. Because I was having serious issues with my shoulder, they had scheduled my consultation and a treatment for the same time. When Chris was starting my treatment, I couldn't lie down and have my arm flat so he had me stand, hit a point on my opposite hand, and had me walk around moving my shoulder. Then he treated me with the electrode things...well, two hours later I felt much better. At the next appointment, I saw Ky. He said I had a frozen shoulder. I told him I was too young for that shit (I never knew what that was when patients would tell me they had that - I was an x-ray tech for many years) and he said nope, I was 50's and it was common. He let me know this is one of the few times acupuncture is going to hurt because we had to break the adhesions. Ugh...no shit! So far, after several treatments my range of motion has improved and it will take several more. As I told Ky, I can suck up the pain knowing it's for the better. Had to stay off the bike for a bit, too. I preach acupuncture to everyone I know and I have confidence it will help for many other things. Once the shoulder is done, then we'll work on the weight loss and other stuff. OCA is the bomb!! Run, don't walk to them and get treated. You never have to see the needles, either.
