My landscape designer was an absolute doll and lovely person. And gratitude to the install team - they worked really hard to do a lot on a really really hot day! Otherwise, our experience was overwhelmingly subpar for the investment. We asked for a simple front yard landscaping revamp. There were more misses than wins with the overall delivery: 1) Design proposal took longer than quoted (no big deal, I know they're busy), and was missing a key part we originally asked for (and got an "oops sorry, here's a haphazard fix"). Design still lacked some our accessory asks, but we decided to disregard those anyway. I feel as though our vision wasn't heard and believe me, I am an over-communicator. Maybe budget was an unspoken obstacle? But if so, it should have been communicated - we were flexible! 2) The install day was never scheduled, and the install team showed up unannounced without designer oversight as promised. Luckily I was able to arrange to stay home for the install. 3) We were charged for new plants, that we didn't receive. Instead they "transplanted" our dead plants that looked awful (these were the reason we were investing in new landscaping altogether). 4) Old random foliage and plants were left in our landscape (likely with intention, because they planted the new around them which threw off spacing). 5) Some plants did not take and remained weed-y, even with frequent and appropriate watering. When addressed, we were told we were not watering enough... doubt it, but ok. See photos. I'm shocked they thought this was acceptable, and didn't ask how to handle if there was question at the time of install. We ended up needing to replant about half of the overall work ourselves. Old plant concerns were remedied on our invoice, and follow-up communication was prompt from the designer at least. Won't re-engage. read more

They sold my dad and sister a dogwood tree that died within 5 years. When digging it out I found out why. The whole ball of the tree was packed in Orange clay. Around the whole ball of orange clay was a a wire basket. This tree never had a chance to live and they charged my dad over $400 for this garbage. read more

Over a couple of decades I have bought shrubs, trees, perrineals and annuals. The two trees, one shrub and multiple perrineals died. The annuals have done okay. I don't know why these things didn't survive. All I know is that I will not buy anything other than annuals from Oakland again. read more

I could've sworn I've reviewed this location many times, but not seeing my review. I decided to leave an update. Came to the Oakland nursery, which is located in New Albany, near Gahanna on route 62. Parking is easily found here as their parking lot wraps around its entire property. Even on its busiest days I have always found a spot to park. Nearly all the trees and plants on our property are from this location. They have been healthy and survived me transplanting them. When they havent they have a wonderful warranty program and replacing them has been easy (just keep your receipt) should you need items delivered- delivery is not that expensive a few years ago mine was 75 dollars for a tree and a few shrubs. However, we tend to borrow a truck and transport most things ourselves. There is a home depot down the road that rents out by the hour starting at 19.95 should one want to go that route. It's December as I write this, so the shop is heavily decorated for the holidays. Lots of guft items inside the main building and their adjacent gift store. their Christmas trees on site seem healthy, full and beautiful. I had come here today for foliage. I found their evergreen planters to be priced similar similarly to ones that you would find at the grocery store. I was surprised by that. I had expected them to be much more pricier here, very nice surprise! The arrangements here were even a little bit more full and decorated so I chose to buy mine from Oakland nursery this year. I love them! Getting them inside was a little difficult. Because it's so cold, the staff had the barn doors shut and opening them is a little difficult (cause they're very heavy). However, once I got inside, staff helped me with my planters and even help me get them to the car. Resuming my mission to find an olive tree, I came to this location to see if they had anything cheaper than $70. They had 3 olive trees in the indoor room with tropical plants. They were the same as the Dublin location. I decided to go for it. I also bought a lemon tree. My frustration (4 stars) came from the service. A nice young woman pointed me towards where they were, but I was still lost. Then I saw her again with another older lady and this lady walked me into the room and found what they had available. She apologized and said they should have found her to help me in the first place. This is the second time I've been here in the last month, and I enjoyed the large gift shop the first time. Wow! This place is huge! I had no idea how far back the space went. We stopped by to pick out a Christmas tree, and the nice selection were all set up out back of the store, along with some additional holiday decor and other greenery. They had a fire going with sticks and marshmallows for roasting, and the friendly employees greeted us and helped us get set up with the tree. There's also a playground available in this space. Inside, a huge display of seasonal poinsettias greeted us. The greenhouse was so very green and wonderful to explore, and there were some fun holiday decorations providing some festive spirit, plus seasonal additions like a Grinch plant were available. One side of the store is a gift shop that features a lot of great outdoor items, as well as more seasonal decorations. Another customer had gotten the wind chimes going, and there were quite a few. It is so disappointing that Oakland Nursery stocks so few Ohio native species. The may carry 10 species of Viburnum but not one is an Ohio native, same with Coral Bells, Rhododendrons and others. They will tell you they carry "nativars", but these do not support the local insect and bird population in the same way. They sell so many invasives that escape people's yards and wind up in our natural areas, just look at our ravines overrun with Vinca Vine. They are jam packed every season with customers and so are missing a valuable opportunity to educate people and support our local ecosystem while still making their money. Since I've started spending my money at other nurseries in the area that focus on selling Ohio natives, my yard is both beautiful AND supportive to the local wildlife (AND plants' survival rate is higher as they are usually more deer resistant and adapted to other stresses of an Ohio landscape). read more

Two seasons on: seven of the plants they put in have now died, despite proper care. It is pretty clear that they were not suitable for the sun/shade areas where Oakland put the in. We have spent more to repair the dead lawn areas now than we did on the original sod. read more

I recently had a balled and burlapped tree planted by Oakland nursery. The good part is they were friendly and courteous, delivered the tree, dug a hole for the tree, put the tree in the hole at the right level and put a layer of mulch over it. The bad part is the hole was just wide and deep enough for the root ball to fit, the burlap remained on top of the root ball and the wire cage was intact. Oakland's website says this is all they will do and they did just that. This will probably keep the tree alive for the one year warranty period but not necessarily for the life span of the tree. Best practices for planting a balled and burlapped tree include digging a hole at least twice as big as the ball, removing the burlap from the top of the ball and,most importantly, remove the wire cage at least a third of the way from the top of the ball. If these simple actions are not done, the root system can be girdled by the wire later in the tree's lifespan. Considering the majority of the tree's cost was having Oakland plant the tree, I assumed they would do it right for the life of the tree. I have been a long time customer of Oakland but I have never had them plant a tree. I will not make that mistake again. Oakland apparently does not care about their plants after the warranty period. I bought a couple hundred dollars' worth of plants and soil & such at Oakland Park on State Route 36 in Delaware. One shrub was a blueberry plant that looked dormant or questionable but the labelling on the plant stated it was guaranteed for one year. I planted it within 24 hours and watered it in amazing soil. However there was no change or growth whatsoever. After a couple weeks I dug it up and bagged it and returned it today with the receipt. I have never tried to return a dead plant before. To my surprise I was told that the "14-day time limit" had expired! No exchange or refund. I won't be shopping there EVER AGAIN! How does a '14-day time limit' even make sense? It takes longer than that to determine if a dormant-looking plant is alive or dead! read more

I can pretty confidently share that I have one of the greenest thumbs in my family, maybe even on my block, and I am proud to be a devoted plant mama. I have over 40 plants inside my apartment, have my own garden in the backyard, a lovely flower bed in my front yard and a ton of pots on my porch. Needless to say, I geek out on exploring new-to-me nurseries around Columbus. While I usually visit the same one, this past weekend I was ready to mix things up a bit and Oakland Nursery was the final destination. After picking up my friend that lives around the corner, we made our way over to what appeared to be Columbus' Saturday morning hot spot! This place was bumpin! Luckily we found a parking spot, grabbed a cart easily, and began our adventure. We first went to the indoor plant section and I was blown away by how much they had. They even had a rare plant section, which was totally badass in my opinion. My friend grabbed a beautiful pothos for cheap and I snagged two small asparagus ferns, one for myself and one for a friend as a gift. Next we headed outside for a few plants to throw in pots on my back porch. The space outside seriously just kept going and going. The rose section was so beautiful and smelled amazing. Their outdoor pots and lawn ornament section was rather large, but pretty pricey. I also loved walking through all the giant trees they had in the back. After grabbing a couple flats of petunias we headed back inside. We made a quick circle through their large "home goods" section, I grabbed a cute $5 mini pot for my friend's gift, and we headed for the check out. The staff was friendly, answered all my questions about mulch, and I got everything I needed for roughly $20. The mulch pick up was also a breeze and the fellas that loaded it were so sweet. Oakland has a great selection of indoor and outdoor plants and seasonal gift items. They also do custom (I think) wreaths and bow decorations, in addition to making a lot of wreath/bow/garland decorations for sale in the store. There are a lot of lawn ornaments as well. I haven't been during the summer for outdoor plants, I'm more of a house plant person, but they have about 10 acres in Columbus city proper, so I'm sure the selection is pretty good. The houseplant greenhouse is small and kind of crowded, but they have good prices and the plants look healthy. They are also pet friendly (with treats). The outdoor area is very welcoming for dogs, and the staff were all super friendly and polite and asked to approach and pet my little gremlin. We had a fabulous time. I wasn't planning on getting a live tree this year, but Oakland had some 4 footers that would fit my space well, and it was kind of irresistible. They had a large selection of trees and fresh swags as well! read more

Oakland Nursery is a great place to grab your gardening needs - they have indoor and outdoor supplies, seeds, bulbs, pots, lawn ornaments, and houseplants! I mainly go here for houseplant needs, and sometimes the pots can be overcrowded or a bit pricey, which is the only thing holding me back from full stars. Let me start off by saying, I was surprised by the rating score of this location, but then again, I only visited this once and we only bought some gardening tools. It was also like 95 degrees outside and felt like 104 degrees inside. Most of the bad reviews I've seen were regarding service - I can't really speak on that. However, this place was HUGE. I blew my expectations for size OUT of the water. It went on and on, we ended up not even walking through it all because it was so big and we were in the sun and it was so hot. But it was absolutely gorgeous. You can tell all of their plants are well taken care of. I can't imagine the amount of staffing and water it takes to create such beautiful plants. But please know, you're also going to pay for it haha. A lot of their plants were not on the low-cost end at all, however, there was a huge sale that they apparently have annually to clear out a lot of their spring and summer plants to prepare for the fall. So there were lots of options at a great price. We had recently just purchased all of our summer plants so we didn't have a need, but otherwise would have for sure gotten way too many. I went to this nursery with my partner to look at the mums and their fairy garden collection. I was on a call with my mom asking her if she wanted a decoration from the store and was rudely interrupted by a staff member that told me not to take my cart into certain areas, (I had not taken my cart into said areas) She continued to follow and watch us closely the rest of our visit, making us really uncomfortable and as if we had done something wrong in their space. in reality we walked around, held hands, and purchased a few items as a normal customer would do. We called the manager and expressed that we had felt like we had been followed and spoken to about a non issue, most likely because we were a visibly gay couple. We asked if the staff member could call us back and explain. We then received a voicemail from the employee that said, I'd really like you to call me back if I have done something to offend you, I'd like to apologize, alright bye. Before she hung up we clearly heard her say "was that good" in a completely different and snarky tone. We were honestly shocked that this was the response. The entire experience here was completely sour. As a manager in a customer service forward company, I would have taken this matter very seriously and done anything to make sure the customer felt heard and safe. We do not feel like this was handled appropriately. read more

Sad experience. I paid over $10,000 for custom landscaping and the plants suggested to begin with were inappropriate. Half dies and did't survive the season (after a 3 month waiting period to get them installed last year!). The company wont honor the warranty to replace. I've placed countless emails to the Oakland landscape "architect" (Clinton) and countless phone calls with the constant response of "I will get back to you in a few week". Really unimpressed with the level of customer service for such an investment. Do not recommend. The company has yet to fix the issue... read more

I have been a loyal customer of the Delaware store for over 17 years, until today. I purchased 7 evergreen trees a month ago for our neighborhood homeowners association, to replace ones that had died from a fungus 2 years ago. I spent $3500, had to take 2 vacation days from work waiting on these trees to be delivered and they never showed up. No calls, no nothing. When I went into the store to ask why my delivery was never made, a worker said, "I have no idea, so do you want your money back?" Do yourself a favor, and go to Scotts Garden Center in Powell. She was caring, knowledgeable, and exceptionally friendly! Our tree was here and planted by an exceptional crew that did a fabulous and professional job. This is probably my favorite nursery in Columbus. A short drive off I-71 in an unassuming area. It can be a little tricky to get into the parking lot if there is traffic. Once you walk in it looks a little small place with registers up front,the tropical plant area (magical little place) on the right and garden/home items on the left. Keep walking!! Straight on through, out the back is where some of the gems are. Groundcover plants, mulch and rocks on the left and fertilizer,pots and stands on the right outside the doors. Beyond that is a gardeners heaven. They have almost everything you could dream of. The farther you go the more you see of plants and shrubs while flowers, herbs, small plants are closer to the front. A must go if you have never been or need a large selection to take your pick from. read more

Honestly shocked at the number of good reviews this nursery receives; they're certainly undeserved. Having seen the great praise Oakland receives online, I knew as an avid urban gardener I had to check it out. The one plus side of Oakland is their selection. Without a doubt one of the most diverse and well rounded selections I've come across: succulents, herbs, flowering annuals, perennials of all sizes, great additives and amendments for soil, a decent selection of accessories. However, the prices of said selection do nothing but limit, if not completely eradicate, the benefit of having so much in one place. I've usually had to go between 4-5 nurseries to get a full stock of what I've wanted each season. Oakland had everything I needed, for literally 70% more than what I ended up paying at the nurseries I went to afterwards. On both occasions I've shopped at Oakland, there were cashier errors that ended up charging me 4 times the listed prices of certain items. I had to wait for confused staff to check the prices and confirm that I was in fact correct. I was told this was simply a glitch in the system and that they hadn't updated the prices yet. This was 3 months ago. I returned today to have the EXACT issue happen. Not only did I need the cashier to recheck the prices, I was sold a bag of potting soil that wasn't even in stock. I had to go watch the poor loading guy looking around for 10 mins knowing full well that it wasn't there to be found. Then had to wait in line to receive a refund on the soil that didn't exist. Will not be returning. A wide selection does not make up for ridiculous pricing and chaotic management. read more

This was probably the first garden center I went to in Columbus, decades ago. Stopped by yesterday to try to fill in our front bed after moving hostas out. It was busy, as expected in spring, but not crazy. I wandered a bit, among their many, many options, and found a few things I hope will work. Huge selection of perennials, shrubs, a few annuals already. Plus supplies, decor, etc. Service was fast. Previous experiences here and at other locations show that the employees are knowledgeable and helpful; I didn't need either today, but they were around if I had needed something. Prices are a bit high, but not crazy. Selection was more than adequate. It's not the closest or most convenient for me, but I will be back eventually. read more

1 Star solely based on the bad experience thus far of getting my tree that I paid $600.00 for and the additional "delivery / planting" fee of $300.00. * Delivery guy today couldn't care less. * Was in and out so fast I didn't have time to ask him any follow up questions. * They tried using old ground up dirt that had dead tree in it to fill up the hole that I DUG. Even after I said "don't use that dirt - it's not good for the new tree." * Crew left behind their trash - including cans of red bull. * They did not dig down or plant the tree down like I was told it would be, which is part of the additional $300.00 I spent. Time will tell. Fingers crossed that the tree takes hold and grows. One saving grace is that I have a one year warranty but I anticipate push back on that. Oakland Nursery on Oakland Park Avenue in Columbus, Ohio, has lost my business. For over fifteen years I have bought rose bushes from them and, overall, they have done well in my garden. But not this year: I bought four rose bushes totaling around $110.00 only to find three of the four died!! Only one of the four is doing well. I'm very disappointed with such a beautiful nursery as Oakland Nursery. After weeks of being excited to head out and finally go to a greenhouse I selected Oakland Nursery. I have to say that since visiting I have been talking with friends and neighbors and expect better. There was no markers on the floor for check out and people did not keep to themselves. Going to Oakland Nursery is like spending a day in heaven. The store's flowers shift with the season, offering hot chocolate outside on their huge, backyard, patio​, in the winter and popcorn in the fall. Oakland Nursery sells the best spring bulbs you could ever get! The dormant​ seeds are arranged in baskets with pictures of the rare, tulip​, blooms, that they emerge into as the snow melts and summer comes our way. Oakland is a huge maze, with an indoor plant house that holds tropical orchids and angel ferns. In the summer you'll get lost​ in the tons of rose gardens and peony bushes they sell. Oakland has quality plants and they sell super fairly. As the plant grows, the price goes up, so be sure to buy that baby sprout when you see it or you'll be back next year to get one! Tulips​ and bulbs go on sale if you're​ a last-minute​ bulb planter in the fall, making for a colorful spring! read more

The best place to get a wide selection and variety of plants. I must say for their cornering of the market in Central Ohio their prices aren't bad either. The only other similar places I know are Dills in Canal Winchester and Keller's which is in rural Carroll/Lancaster area. I was able to find white bleeding hearts for my Mom as her Mother's Day gift when everywhere else I went didn't have any. The employees are helpful and understanding. The place is beautiful to just walk around and experience even if you don't purchase anything. They also have indoor plants in a cool little greenhouse attached the the main building by the bathrooms. The bathrooms are tiny, so beware! Indoor and outdoor registers make for convenient check out. They do have a private parking lot and street parking but on Mother's Day prepare for it to be PACKED! I will be returning to purchase plants for my home when that time comes next year. read more
