Enjoyed a delicious birthday dinner @Hawthorne

Hawthorne and Wood is one of those places that just gets it right every time. I visit whenever I'm in town seeing my best friends, and it's become our go-to spot. The food is always on point. Fresh, creative, and full of flavor. And the service? Always warm, attentive, and consistent. It's the kind of place that makes you feel welcome and well taken care of without trying too hard. Just really solid all around.

Wow just wow! I'm here in the RDU area for a work trip and found this gem on Yelp. The attention to detail from the moment I walked in till the end of my dining experience was phenomenal. The hostess, (who happens to be as tall as me!!!), gave me a selection of open seating options and pre set my table while I ran across the street to Walgreens. I ordered the shrimp appetizer, followed by the winter squash veloute, with my main course being the flounder. All of the food was prepared with incredible attn to detail and the tastes were spot on. What a great experience. I'll be back! Now on to the food pics!

This was my first time here. Everything was fantastic. Service, Food, Ambiance 10/10.

Went for our anniversary. Could actually speak to each other the whole evening without yelling. Food was amazing and presented beautifully; service was impeccable. Had the hamachi crudo and flounder in a coconut lemongrass broth. Husband had the peach/pork shoulder appetizer and the scallops. He enjoyed the milk chocolate semifreddo with caramel and bruleed banana; I had pannacotta with roasted bruleed figs. Loved every bite as did my husband. Didn't feel rushed, cocktails also excellent, and we will be back.

Favorite place right now!! The food is amazing! The service was excellent. Beautiful decorations, music is not loud, you can have a good conversation with friends or family while enjoying this incredible food.

Hawthorne & Wood may be the best restaurant in Chapel Hill. The service alone is worth every penny; our servers were so attentive, informative, and knowledgeable, without seeming overbearing or pretentious. The drinks were lovely, and every course we ordered was exceptionally designed. And yeah it's expensive, but I've paid more at restaurants in Chapel Hill and received much worse food and service. H&W is a great place to impress clients or friends; it's a special place and deserves all the accolades.

Great find! Food was excellent, enjoyed all the entrees we tried. Friendly service, owner was greeting tables and seemed to know some locals. If you want to experience a good meal in a pleasant environment, give it a try!

My partner and I were highly anticipating this restaurant as many of our friends in the area I have recommended Hawthorne & Wood. He denoted in the reservation online that it was to celebrate my 25th birthday and we were quite disappointed with nothing came of it. There wasn't even any acknowledgment of the denotement. However, we understand as sometimes these things can be missed. Now for the ambience, it was lovely. The interior decor were moderate and dim lights. Very fitting for the high-quality restaurant that Hawthorne & Wood and would like to call themselves. However, the service was subpar at best. The server seemed to be in a rush to get us out. We were there for less than an hour in total. He didn't really communicate with us, kept conversations very short, perhaps he was just having a bad day. Now the food and appetizers, we had the ceviche and duck and both were good. The ceviche was tart which was unexpected but a good mix. The duck, however, was on the saltier side. But we were still happy to try for the unique combination of ingredients. Now the main entrées, the steak that I got truly blew me away. One of the best steaks in the chapel hill area, that I have tasted! The pork chop was quite delicious as well. The sauce and the pork chop itself was of a smoky salty sauce, and it was delicious. I'm not much of a fan of barbecue or smoky flavors, but my partner really enjoyed it. However, we do have to give it to the chefs that the steak was truly the star of the show. Despite having a delicious steak, we will not find ourselves coming back to Hawthorne & Wood for the service, and the lack of attention to detail. It's difficult to justify such a high price for below average service.

Hawthorne & Wood is one of the nicer restaurants in the area. They have a modern sophisticated interior and a short but sweet menu. The dishes were predictable and average in execution for this caliber of restaurant, but that's comparing to restaurants in larger cities. Beet Salad 4/5 - Our server offered to split this onto two plates for us and it arrived so beautifully presented. I wish the flavors were brighter and more contrasted, it came off overall a bit salty. Barbecue Shrimp 2/5 - It comes with five small-medium shrimp haha and a strangely sweet(?) sauce. The "cornbread" didn't taste of cornmeal and instead resembled a dense, failed homemade biscuit/bread. Duck Confit Cassoulet 4.5/5 - The rich fatty flavor of the duck melded well with the salty cassoulet. The duck had crispy skin as promised, and soft tender meat. Flounder 1/5 - I must take some blame for this one because I saw it on the menu and said "every new american restaurant does this fish and coconut curry/soup dish and it always falls flat." But I was feeling fish and wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I should've stuck to my guns. The fish was cooked just fine but the coconut broth is so uninspired and lacking in flavor. Didn't finish it and didn't wanna take it home. Pork Chop 4/5 - This thing is huge. It was cooked quite nicely for pork, but did taste under seasoned and dry on its own. The sauce was actually really delicious but there wasn't enough to go around so you're just eating the last half of the pork chop plain. Our server was a little brusque but very competent. I don't care if the server doesn't fake a smile for us, but some people may. Overall we had a nice time and enjoyed our meal. Glad we tried it but don't feel a desire to come back again.

How much is their corking fee?

Last time I recall it was zero, but I would double check. They are a very reasonable group.

    Is there outdoor dining availible?

Yes, they have a very nice patio area with full service. They also have a lounge area out front.

It was freezing today outside and we were seated by the door. Everything was fine until the hostess propped the door open. They left the door wide open and everyone in the front seating area was miserable. I asked if they could please close it and I was told no. They said the hostess stands by the door on game days. So they really don't care if their customers are comfortable or not. That says a lot. They certainly could've made adjustments given the cold and windy day. But our waitress was kind enough to move us when a table opened up in the back. That was a big relief and much more comfortable. Now to their food. The bacon cheese fries were great but didn't have bacon so we had to get them to bring back to sprinkle on top. The ranch was excellent and we all liked the app. My youngest got a grilled cheese which he enjoyed. My oldest got a burger which he said was okay, but nothing special. But the real disappointment comes in with the hot dogs. My first dog was cold, like unappetizingly cold. The waitress was very nice and took care of it immediately. However, the second dog came out almost immediately. If you like a boiled hot dog that's reheated in a microwave, you'll like their hot dogs. But I want a quality grilled hot dog. We'll stick to our ol' faithful CH burger joint from here on out. And I hope next time your customers are extremely uncomfortable on a freezing day sitting right next to the open door, you exercise some courtesy and close the door next time.

It's just silly It was cool to check out some of the downstairs area of the hotel but I wouldn't be back anytime soon unless for an event or another gathering. I will say everything that I got from the drinks to the shared appetizer of pistachio feta(?) and pita was good. Overall, it's an interesting place, but not a common hang out spot unless I was on a surgeons salary.

The space is modern and elegant but still cozy, with soft lighting, subtle earth tones, and an open layout that balances intimacy and energy. Service was outstanding from start to finish, attentive, informed, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. Let's get into the food, because this was one of the most exciting and consistently excellent meals we've had in a long time. We started with They Might Be Tostones, a clever and beautifully layered dish with Murasaki sweet potato, lime-pimentón crema, and chili crisp. It was punchy, bright, and balanced. The Warm Rustic Baguette with whipped butter and sea salt may seem simple, but it was divine, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfect for lingering. Dirt Candy, a medley of seasonal vegetables with toasted pistachio ail lade, was vibrant and thoughtfully composed. The Big Eye Tuna Carpaccio with red miso-citrus bagna cauda and delicate shoots was fresh and refined, with a perfect acidity and richness. We moved on to heartier plates like the Ricotta Gnocchi with Italian sausage, peppers, whipped ricotta, broccoli rabe, and chili flake. The gnocchi were pillowy and deeply flavorful. The Kabocha Squash & Farro with lump crab, pancetta, and miso butter was savory, slightly sweet, and full of texture. The Pan Roast with flounder, mussels, fregula, and smoky shellfish sugo was bold and briny, with layers of flavor in every bite. Two pasta dishes also stood out, the Ravioli di Manzo with Barolo-braised beef and Parmigiano was rich and comforting, while the Plin Piemontese, filled with pasture-raised pork and finished in crema di parmigiano, was elegant and silky. For dessert, we shared all three options and each one brought something different. The Citrus plate with steamed lemon pudding and lemon curd was light, tart, and texturally playful. The Cheesecake with maple mascarpone and cranberry compote was creamy, nutty, and not overly sweet. But the star was the Chocolate Fondant, extra dark, gooey, with salted caramel gelato and hazelnut crumble. An absolutely unforgettable finish. OakLeaf is a standout. Every dish felt thoughtful, seasonal, and beautifully executed. We will absolutely be back.

The star of the show in my opinion were the hush puppies and the corn and wild mushroom risotto. There were sooo many different flavors that perfectly complemented each other. I was blown away. And the pig cheek on top was incredible. 500/10. Our server made great recommendations! Then-- chaos and heartbreak ensued in the form of a fire alarm. We were forced to evacuate the restaurant as the fire department arrived , leaving about half our meal on the table. After 30 or so minutes of waiting out in the cold (we were apparently the only guests who hadn't paid out yet) our server came to find us. He asked us if we wanted to just give him our credit card information and he would ring us up later, when the fire department gave them the ok, as he understood not wanting to wait around. It broke our heart to leave our leftovers, but we agreed and went to go get the car. Thankfully we are stubborn.. and optimistic to a fault. And by the third time we circled around the block, the fire truck was pulling away. I ran in and asked if there was any chance our food hadn't been thrown away yet, and it hadn't! The staff was happy we had been able to come back, and they packed everything up for us, even taking the hush puppies off the bill and sneaking in a complimentary piece of key lime pie. I'm so glad we were able to tip our server appropriately for his great service-- and rescue our leftovers. Happy ending. All was well. (And the fire ended up being something innocuous in the unit above the restaurant)

The gumbo was also super tasty, with a little bit of a kick. Better with even more shrimp ! 9.5/10
