OMG - really good food at a great price for being in Scandinavian country. Stockholm is one of the most expensive town. They have a more expensive taste room (the slip) ~$250/person. We couldn't get reservation so we went to the restaurant oxen broar- same restaurant but the slip is in an enclosed room. If the food is like that of the broar then I would say it would be amazing. We had ox neck, char fish, ribs with cauliflower side dish, wax beans and potatoes. The side dishes were small but the main dishes were good portion and we ordered 2 portion of the ox neck- it tasted like prosciutto- very tender and mild tasting$10 or both potions.The char fish $25 had excellent flavor and the ribs $20 as well. It was very much a comfort food type of place. All side dishes were around $5/6. The place has a bar and very limited seating but off the pier so you can enjoy a nice view while dining. We took the bus to get there. From the stop, it was a short walk to the restaurant. We actually left the place under $100 including a glass of wine and a mix drink. The problem is, that the food is only so-so. And the prices are pretty high too. Here are my ratings: Food: 3/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Value: 3/5 We were greeted by a very friendly staff, and opted for a seat on the patio because it was a beautiful day and we wanted to be by the water. But the patio was over-crowded and the table was placed in the middle of a walkway. Not a great start. But we were moved to a different table promptly. The food turned out to be rather disappointing. And there weren't too many options either, especially for fish. Here are the details. Bread basket - 5/5. Excellent bread with some nice home-churned butter. Mackerel Appetizer (SEK 175) - 2/5. This dish was a total flop. It was tiny morsels of fish, sitting at the bottom of a bowl covered by what appeared to be veggie foliage. I had to dig past the foliage to get to the tiny morsels of fish. And it was expensive for what you get. The only redeeming quality was the nice citrus dressing. Charcuterie (SEK 95) - 2/5. Yet another flop. The dish consisted only of salami (which was very mediocre) and some other cured meat (which was pretty tasty). But there was nothing else, no cheese not even a pickle. At least the price was reasonable. Fish Special (SEK 345) - 3/5. The fish wasn't a great fish. It was very bony. And it was served with a cream sauce that was way too salty. And if that wasn't salty enough, there were slices of chewy pancetta which was even saltier. We skipped on desert. I just don't think I'm a big fan of Scandinavian food (sorry!! see below) but Oaxen Slip prepares Scandinavian food beautifully and I'm glad I got to try my first taste here. Like other reviews mention, it's a great place to grab a bite after a day at the museums on Djurgården! I had the norrøna herring with brown butter, warm potato salad, chopped egg & apple. Herring is really salty, but it was nicely balanced with the potato salad. But, I just can't say that I love herring. I also ordered a side of roasted tomatoes. I like what they tried to do with the texture (adding nuts for a bit of a crunch) and other elements to balance out acidity. My friends had the Roasted brioche with 63° egg, paprika-spiced sausage & hollandaise sauce, which seems like a version of eggs benedict. They were disappointed by the portion size relative to the price, but honestly that's all of Sweden for ya! The bread was fantastic. Service was great - even though we sat at the bar. After a visit in the nearby Skansen open-air museum, we came for dinner and were seated right away at a communal table. For some reason, the chairs at the table were the kind you find at a theater/auditorium and were hard and stationary--not the most comfortable by any means, but I sure hope there was a good reason for using them! After starting with some simple cracker bread and regular bread, we ordered the grilled cod collar for two, and we were presented with two fairly large pieces of cod that had a nice smokey flavor, and whose meat simply fell off the bone! The side dishes here are ordered a la carte, and we got the grilled brocolli with shaved hard Swedish cheese and onions, as well as the roasted beets with sunflower and mustard seed. The flavor of the brocolli was savory and fresh, and the beets were soft, tender, and sweet--both of these paired so nicely with the fish, but I wish we could have gotten even more side dishes to share! In general, this restaurant reminded me of a few small plates or gastropub restaurants I've been to in the US, and the dinner menu is definitely catered for small groups willing to share lots of different dishes/snacks. The more casual cousin of Michelin 2* Oaxen Krog it was for Brunch that two sat out on a shaded patio at Oaxen Slip, the popular spot for locals as well as tourists offering a meal that was decent, though not so much in terms of value. Described best as a Bistro, the location along water looking out on Beckholmen undoubtedly part of Oaxen's appeal as boats occasionally move across one's gaze en route to open water, it was shortly after the Restaurant opened that seating was nearly full, a small staff providing service that would generously be called deliberate with "slow" a less pleasant description. Lined by suspended ships on the inside with nature doing al fresco duties in early Swedish Spring, complimentary Bread and good local Butter quick to arrive, it was after a lengthy delay that orders were placed, the limited weekend menu first providing a hemisected Sandwich topped in creamy Pork Spread along with melted Cheese, Mayonnaise and forgivingly mild Sauerkraut. Easily finishing the opening volly in a few bites each, a delay dividing this from more Food not unpleasant given the setting despite being inexplicable for Charcuterie, it was all-together that Pork Neck and house-aged Ham arrived alongside pickled Green Tomatoes ruined by Horseradish plus crisp French Fries and creamy Foie Gras hidden beneath Salad, the waitress' claim that Ketchup was unavailable when trying to sell 30 SEK Mayonnaise immediately disproved when a table of regulars received a ramekin that an alternative server was happy to provide. Rounding things out with Dessert, an e-mail days prior inquiring about the dinner Bread Pudding stating it could not be ready for Brunch, it was fortunate that Carrot Cake topped in Cream Cheese Frosting and Nuts was excellent because the flat Banana Bread beneath smooth Coconut Ice Cream and Lemon Marmalade so bitter it had to be removed most certainly was not. read more

I came on a Saturday in the evening as a single traveler and I had an absolutely delicious meal: delicious deep-fried pea fritters, rare hanger steak in a wonderful sauce, a kale salad, and a glass of nice red wine. My waitress was terrific, and the harborside setting is lovely. But the restaurant caters to an elite crowd, and because I was a jacketless single traveler, the maitre d' was highly supercilious to me, even though I was well groomed, and tipped well (especially by Swedish standards). I am also not a kid--I'm a 56 year-old professional. I came again on a Tuesday night--just at 5 pm, too, to avoid the crowds-- and the same maitre d' told me haughtily the restaurant was entirely booked for the evening, even though only one couple was seated before me in the entire restaurant, and the deck, which doubles the seating area, was open (and it was on a Tuesday night, when I had been seated before on a busy Friday night just days before). By his manner it was clear he did not want me to eat there (although, again, I was not wearing jeans or shorts, and I was wearing a clean buttoned dress shirt). He did not even bother to apologize to me in any way for being unable to seat me, but dismissed me curtly. Despite the delicious food, I would absolutely not come here again, whether solo or in the company of other friends (as is usual when I travel--this was a rare trip by myself). Who needs the attitude? I absolutely do not recommend this place for solo travelers. read more

It's always a great idea to go to Oaxen Slip after a lovely stroll on Djurgården. The nautical interior in this airy restaurant is very inspiring, and the view over Saltsjön just outside the windows is simply wonderful and very relaxing. The modern Nordic cuisine that is being served by the knowledgeable and attentive staff is very ambitious and delicious. The menu is varied and it is advisable to order dishes for sharing. This is something that appeals to me since I like to share the food and discuss what's on the table :) I would advise booking a table here a few days before you plan to go. My first foray into modern scandinavian food! We managed to make it in here while it was down pouring, and the ambiance with the rain pitter pattering on the roof while sitting below those old wooden boats in Djurgarden was incredible. We shared a bunch of plates as followed: -Snacks & Starters- First off, I knew it was going to be good, when the bread was warm, soft, and oh so deliciously carby. Dried Pork Neck: Smokey, earthy, better than bacon (Blasphemy! But true.) Eggs and Herring & Smoked Shrimps were good, too. Then...Ox sausage and Cod. SO FREAKING GOOD. The cod was super moist and just stabbing it with my fork made it flake beautifully. The Ox sausage was interesting and delicious, unlike anything I've tasted before. We also had green cabbage and french fries with smoked mayo for side dishes. It felt like I was eating the best food cooked in the wild outdoors. This place was a treat. The Slip menu includes a special lunch under the moniker "veckans värsting" for the relatively modest (given the circumstances) price of 145 SEK. When we visited, this implied pike quenelles (gäddqueneller), which I believe I have never had before. They were remarkably elastic, like some kind of rubber eggs or perhaps halloumi. They were also tasty. The quenelles were served with potato and broccoli. I hope that I will have a similarly novel, tasty and affordable experience the next time I visit Slip. read more

So I'm reviewing their brunch which is the only thing served there in the weekends and base on that I will probably never go back to try other dishes! It's a simple & modern Scandinavian restaurant & their dishes are strictly northern with no infusion from anywhere else in them. We ordered four of the small dishes as they recommended, one of which was cured herring that is three different kinds, three baby bite-size of each and it tasted just like the one you buy from supermarket! Honestly I have a hard time believing that it didn't come out of those jars! The code fish balls were pretty fishy & things they mixed in them didn't really match in tastes. Then we ordered smoked lamb steak which didn't say on the menu it was served cold, otherwise the taste was pretty ok. This restaurant is outstanding. I recognise it is the little sister to the Michelin starred restaurant next door but it also deserves, if not a whole star, at least half of one - and the prices are much more affordable. As suggested we had four dishes plus a side and each was excellent with a couple truly outstanding. The flavours are strong and bold, but the combinations work well and the balance is great. Perhaps the most outstanding dish was pike, which was as delicate and fresh as could be, with peas and a sauce that tasted delicate but was also very rich. Completely memorable. Ahhhhh Oaxen Slip - sooooooo good. The food, the vibe, the everything. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed it already - this place is amazing. I make sure to come here every time I'm in Stockholm. In case you don't make a reservation in time, have no fear - the cute communal table usually is free and if you show up they usually have a few tables available. The menu is seasonal and changes from time to time, but everything is local and so very fresh. It can be a bit pricey, but nothing out of the ordinary from Swedish prices. Make sure you leave room for dessert as well - dessert here is really a treat. I don't drink alcohol, but they have a nice selection of house-made lemonades for (pitiful) people like me. read more

For a weekend trip to Stockholm, we selected to eat our small number of meals at restaurants that highlighted modern Swedish cuisine, and Oaxen Slip's bistro-style Swedish fare definitely didn't disappoint. As we walked in for our reservation, the hostess asked whether we would prefer to sit inside or outside. Based on how gorgeous of a day it was, coupled with the dining area's view of the water, the easy choice was outside. However, the indoor area was open and modern, with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that gave it a light and airy feel. The outdoor dining area had a bistro feel to it, which we both loved. There was a separate area around the corner that had an even better view of the water (and a bit more privacy), but when we asked about it, we were informed that it was reserved for the restaurant Krog. Oaxen is actually two separate restaurants under one roof: Krog and Slip. Open for both lunch and dinner, Slip is the more casual bistro-type establishment, where the menu is comprised of a la carte offerings. Krog only opens for dinner and offers tasting menus. Shortly after settling in, we were presented with the menu, which changes based on what is in season. The menu had variety without being overwhelming. Adam started with a Swedish beer, the Stenstrand Sommar ale 35cl (85 SEK = $12.50). I decided to start with a housemade ginger lemonade and gin (125 SEK = $18.25). The cocktail was incredibly refreshing on this warm day, with a bite of spiciness from the ginger to give it a twist. We were presented with a basket of warm bread and butter; the bread was soft with a crisp exterior and went well with the butter. Soon, the Oaxen dried pork neck (45 SEK = $6.50), presented as lightly folded sheets atop a small wooden block, was presented. The Nordic take at Oaxen was quite similar to the popular Swiss version of dried beef, Bündnerfleisch, and we all-too-quickly enjoyed every piece. Oaxen Slip had both a smoked and pickled version of herring on their menu; Adam opted for the pickled one, which came accompanied by onion and mustard, boiled new potatoes, Västerbotten cheese & Dahlberg's crisp bread (115 SEK = $17). The herring was the perfect balance of sweet and sour and those strong flavors were mellowed out by the potatoes and salty cheese. Building a bit of all of the ingredients on a piece of the crisp bread was perfect. We both just wished the portion was a bit bigger! For my main, I decided to order the grilled char from Piteå (170 SEK = $25). I'm so glad I did! While the presentation might look simple or boring, the flavor was anything but. This was one of the best pieces of grilled fish I had ever eaten. The char had a slight smokiness and was grilled just to the point of being cooked, leaving the fish on the rarer side. The skin was perfectly crisp, with a light sprinkling of salt, which was a great counterpoint to the delicate, sweet fish. A squirt of lemon added an overall brightness to the fish and really brought out the essence of the char. Sometimes the simplest dishes impress me the most and this was definitely one of those times. Adam and I quickly devoured this dish. Adam decided to order the beer and vinegar boiled cheek of veal with almond potato purée, pickled cucumber and tarragon (185 SEK = $27). The veal was incredibly tender and went well with the creamy and smooth potato purée, though we didn't taste a ton of almond. The grilled onions and pickled cucumber lent an element of sweetness to the dish. I found the pickled cucumbers too sweet, while Adam found that it was a nice addition to the dish.We also selected two side dishes: the potato salad and broccoli. The potato salad with spinach, grilled zucchini and capers (45 SEK = $6.50) is not what Americans would think of when they picture potato salad. While it didn't look like what Adam and I had envisioned, it did taste quite good overall! However, it was a bit too oily at times, as many of the items were sitting in a pool of oil. The zucchini and potatoes were able to stand up to the oil but the spinach wilted quite quickly. I had read good things about the grilled broccoli with onion vinaigrette & roasted, grated Dura cheese (50 SEK = $7.25) and it did not disappoint. A large head of broccoli, grilled and then covered in a vinaigrette and cheese. It was nice and refreshing and something that I would have welcomed a second order of. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal at Oaxen Slip. Looking at the prices, it seems exorbitant ($12.50 for a beer?!?) for what we had, but it really is all relative, as Sweden is incredibly expensive. Some of the dishes were definitely quite memorable (grilled char, broccoli) while also giving us a great introduction to modern Nordic food. Plus, if it's a nice day, the outdoor seating is in a beautiful setting. If you're in Stockholm you should definitely make a trip out to Oaxen Slip! read more

Beautiful setting at Djurgarden. My first true Nordic culinary experience. Missed the set lunch which was understandably sold out at 2pm. Had a starter, main, side and a glass of wine which is rather much (~500 SEK). The fried pork is a bit dry to my liking but the cabbage salad is beautiful. Lunch wine is on special (95 SEK) but I was charged double - possibly due to lost in translation. Wonderful service. Rather pricy even to Sydney (Australia) standard. I loved Oaxen Slip. The food, service, location, ambience, decor - it was all great, including the views. This bistro in a former boathouse has been open less than three months. Its sister restaurant Krog, with a gourmet menu and at this point, same kitchen but different crew, was closed on the two nights I had free. Slip was fabulous, making me wonder how long I'll wait before finding my way back to Sweden for another meal at Slip and an evening at Krog! Maria kindly seated me at the bar which was warm and inviting. Sean was an experienced bar man, no doubt, and he recommended the perfect food choices and wine to go with. Each dish I had was beautifully presented using fresh and simple local ingredients. More important the flavors were perfectly tuned, whether the garlic and bread crumbs on the squid starter or the caper vinaigrette sauce on the flank steak. The fries were outstanding. Hot, well salted, crispy, not greasy. And they stayed hot in their bowl throughout the meal. I can't forget the baked tomato side dish, which could have been a little meal in itself. I was rather excited when walking to Oaxen's 'simple' restaurant 'Slip' as the food here should be top notch. The location is fairly far from the center (at Djurgården, close to Skansen and Gröna Lund) but still compared to where Oaxen used to be very central location. It is nicely located by the water and the premises are very light (big windows and high ceiling) but still the view is not the greatest as the small island of Beckholmen is blocking a lot. Still a very nice location and the outdoor seating area is very nice. We were a bit early so had to wait a few minutes for our table to be ready but that was perfectly fine. When we were seated we fairly quickly were asked if we wanted something to drink and drinks were then served promptly. That was also the last good service we were to receive that evening (coming back to that later). Drinks-wise the selection of beer and wines is excellent. There are numerous small breweries represented on the beer list and the wine list was also extensive. There was also a respectable selection of wines by the glass. The prices are a bit high but still not at all outrageous. There was a lot on the menu that just sounded great and we were really glad we were a group of people so that we could order several dishes (many are good to share) and have taste. Before ordering the food we did however also get some lovely bread and very tasty butter. After that followed a selection of starters. We tried the grilled cuttle fish with puree of garlic, cress salad & grilled lemon. It was perfectly prepared and was a mix of very nice fresh flavors. The fried paté with cheese & blackened leeks with pickled cucumber was also a really great dish. The ragu of tripe, beans, new potato, tomato & smoked sausage of wild boar was simply huge, big enough to be a main dish. Unfortunately it was not great as the beans took over to much of the flavor (and I am not really a huge fan of beans). The last starter was grilled heart of veal with beets, anchovy and goat's milk cheese. Decent starter, as heart was tasty but a bit to chewy and too many flavors mixed. Around half-way into the starters several of us had finished our drinks and were sitting with empty glasses. We did try to get the attention of the staff but no real success and even when they were clearing away the plates they did not ask if we wanted something more to drink. We had specifically ask twice for it and then they finally came and took orders (at this point we also asked for more water - that showed up when we had dessert). For mains we were struggling to decide as there were numerous to choose between that all sounded excellent. We went for a very meat inspired approach (much to my liking). The aged Skare sirloin steak with herb butter & jus was cooked perfectly, medium rare and full of flavor. The glazed brisket was also great, extremely tender with full flavor. The favorite was however the steamed bun with pulled pork, shredded greens & BBQ sauce, a bit unclear how it fits into the menu and concept but I am willing to forgive that as it was divine. Worth noting though is that it is difficult to share (which was mentioned) and it is very small for a main (smaller that the ragu of tripe we had as a starter). We also had the veal casserole with vegetables, cream cheese & cream which I was expecting to be my favorite but it was a bit dull, not very flavorful and it felt plain boring. There was an array of exciting sides and we shared four of those (grilled zucchini (good), grilled green beans (awesome), pickled vegetables (good) and a crudite salad (good)) - mix up with orders so we got zucchini instead of tomatoes but none of us had the energy to try to get the every absent waiting staff to the table so we eat the zucchini instead. At this point we were stuffed but we still managed to eat some lovely sorbet and meringue and cream dessert. The coffee is from Johan & Nyström (as well as the tea). The coffee was fine but would have been better if they had made it fresh, now it had a slight bitterness to it which should not be there. Finished dinner with trying to get the attention of the staff to pay - very difficult and long wait while staff wandered around without paying any attention to the guests. The service was in general disinterested and they just seemed like they did not really care. It was not even a busy night so do not really understand why it was so poor. Still giving it a 3 star rating due to the food being very good, prices are fairly reasonable but to be honest it was probably closer to 2,5. May still visit again to see if the food is as good and the service has improved. read more

Wow, the new star on stockholms restaurant scene! Had pork cheeks and mackerel, both dishes where superb! Perfectly cooked, immaculatly seasoned, well balanced flavors and textures. Highly recommended. read more

This was very good food, and very good service. I had zero complaints, except that the dessert was a little different than I expected. The Oaxen Mess (their version of Eton mess) was strawberries, sorbet, lots of peanuts, and broken meringue. No cream, as I would have expected. It was not the best meal I had in Stockholm, and to be honest I probably won't go back because it's not worth the $35 cab fare to get there. But once I was there, it was very good. read more

Yummy! On a boat which I didn't realize until the next day. A lot of great shared plates: herring, ribs, fried cod balls etc. good wine. Formal dinning upstairs. Casual on the bottom deck. Worth a go! read more

Just came here for lunch and ate the best crab of my life. A bit on the pricey side, but well worth it.

High quality lunch worthy of 5 stars. They were out of the herring by the time I ordered, so the waiter asked to substitute the Char. It was fabulous, with tasty crisp skin.
