Trofie marsala: excited as this pasta shape is hard to find. Fine but could've used a bit more depth of flavor. 3.75 stars

Italian restaurant in downtown Santa Cruz with classic and few unique dishes and stellar cocktails. 3.5 stars Food: 3.5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4 Cost to worth it rating: 3 Opentableable: yes Return worthiness: maybe Highlights: - Trofie marsala: this pasta shape is hard to find and when I do it's always with pesto so this was an interesting combo. Could've used a bit more depth of flavor and less soupy texture as I'm a fan of marsala. 3.5 stars - Meat ragu: meaty hub thought it was tasty. 3.5 stars - They made my son a fettuccine with chicken and butter he LOVED which I greatly appreciated. - Banana old fashioned: my hub could not stop raving about this cocktail - Atmosphere: tables in one room and bar in the other Midlight: - Bruchetta: fresh tomatoes were great, but couldn't get over the sliced bread not being toasted which lacked that crusty texture. 3 stars Lowlights: - The website and menu framed it as an upscale special occasion italian restaurant. It was fine, but didn't find that to be the case for our family holiday meal. Solid Italian food and cocktails would consider coming back for.

I think this may be a bit of a hidden gem. Very mellow/not busy on a Thursday night. The appetizers were the highlight. Both the Elk Carpaccio and the Fritto Misto were super good. And where do you get Elk? How cool is that. And Fritto misto was very well fried and crispy. Both were very healthy sized portions as well, we were expecting them to be at least only half as large. The cocktails were also very good. Clean, fresh, well balanced. We got a Spanish Paloma and a Girl in Every Port, and both were very tasty. For mains my husband got the Zuppa de Pesce which was good - had a ton of seafood in it and again was pretty large. But the apps were better. I got the special salmon linguine with vodka sauce and asparagus. The salmon was quite good, but the linguine itself was a bit undercooked, and the sauce was a bit too rich. We both were very full though with two apps and a main. The burgers I saw looked good - so since we weren't blown away by our mains, I think that could be the secret - come for cocktails, apps, and the burger.

The best food in Santa Cruz without a doubt! We had dinner here Saturday night two weeks in a row. Last week we started with the Mushrooms, Fritto Misto and House Made Bread. The Fritto Misto is lightly dusted and fried perfectly. The calamari and tiger shrimp are just delicious. They have perfected their method. We had the Lobster Ravioli as our main entree and the Sea Scallop entree. Exquisitely presented and delicious! They do not skimp on their ingredients. Tonight we had to order the mushrooms again and the Fritto Misto appetizer. We also tried the roasted brussel sprouts. Again, it was all served to perfection. We ordered the Seafood Risotto and the Elk Carpaccio. It was beautiful sliced and prepared. The Elk was sweet and savory. It was a delicious complex blend for your entire palate. The Seafood Risotto was over flowing with seafood. Wow! This is the place to go! And the service we received was impeccable. They time the appetizers, entrees and desserts. Oblo has trained their staff in service and it shows. They are attentive and are constantly clearing plates. The servers and staff know what they are doing. I am raving about this restaurant! It is just what downtown Santa Cruz needs. Make a reservation. You will Not be disappointed!

I'm rooting for this place, but they need to 'step up' their outdoor seating game! We live in a town where people like being outside. The full bar, happy hour deals, and friendly staff are all winners. With a brighter sign/ lights and some outdoor ambiance magic, I'm confident they'll be the 'go-to' spot in no time. Food and drinks are already on point - let's hope they can 'dish out' some outdoor charm soon!

Definitely some of the best eats I've experienced. Service was spot on throughout our meal. We will be returning soon!

Our first time since they change the name and ownership. The changed is "good". Bar area is so much better, counter is more modern. The table in the middle is a good addition. Our bar guys are so nice.

The good: solid cocktails. Frito Misto app was good ( especially the shrimp). The bad: main courses were meh. Seafood Paeea was mediocre at best. Wife's burger was "disgusting" and over cooked. She barely ate half. Fries sucked. Service was pretty slow, but our waitress was nice and polite. Ambiance: anyone who has lived in Santa Cruz for a while knows this building used to be Hobee's cafe and after that Cafe Mare. Sadly, I can't unsee either of those restaurants. I could see this turning into an "old people's" hot spot just like the previous two restaurants at this location. I can't think of any reason to go back other than maybe to grab a cocktail and an appetizer (maybe). 3 stars might be a touch generous.

3% fee for credit cards…read more I highly recommend the distillery tour. Book it in advance. It's super informative and fun. Afterward, there is a tasting of each spirit; however, the pours are very small; about 1/4 ounce of each spirit. It's such a small taste that it's not much more than "smelling" the gin. Which is fine. They make a total of 21 spirits, including 7 whiskeys. Highlights: For their gin, they use Lambic potstills; they have no column stills with baskets. Since they only use potstills, they macerate all the botanicals; it's a "wet" gin. Gin 01 is the flagship, and loaded with lavender. They sell 10000 cases per year. It's available at Whole Foods state-wide, and at the Santa Cruz Costco. Costo sells Gin 01 for $28, a significant discount from the $34 price at the distillery. Gin 01 works best with floral and citrusy cocktails like a corpse reviver #2. Gin 02 is a lightly barrel aged gin. It's aged for 2 months, and each barrel gets used twice. The gin is infused with bay leaf, sage, and fennel: it's more savory. They use bay leaf foraged at Delaveaga park, and they get sage and fennel from a farm nearby. I detected a cedar flavor. It's better with heavier cocktails, like a Paper Plane. They do seasonal gins: One for each season. For gin and tonics served at the distillery, they make their own tonic: it has a lavender note. It also uses chinchona, bitter orange, grapefruit, and elderflower. They have blue agave spirits. They get agave from farms in Yolo county. The farms do the pit roasting for them. The blanco tequila uses champagne yeast. The reposado spirit is aged for 11 months. Their mezcal is more peppery, less smokey. For whiskey: - They have a Port barrel finished whiskey that is really tasty. - I thought the rye was very sweet. - For their peated whiskey, they use malted barley imported from Scotland. Their single malt uses a crystal malt. Overall, it was a very fun visit.

Unfortunately it went downhill from there. I spoke with my waitress to inquire about dairy free vegan options. Not much but I did order a Ba mi sandwich with mushroom. What came was a pork version ~ definitely not vegan. If it were my call , the sandwich I then had to wait for would have been on the house. No such luck. This is not all. Where I was seated by hostess was definitely the world's worst table in the absolute flow of an onslaught of wait staff delivering everything from the kitchen and busing dishes. It was awful. Since my order had already been messed, I did not have the heart to ask about moving. This was an all time worst dining experience. I will never return here again. I have enjoyed the other Venus in Seascape. But these folks were inattentive and lacking empathy. Even their martini was sub standard. Not so at the other Venus.

A restaurant dedicated to The Cheese. Cool…read more I moved from Santa Clara to Santa Cruz in 1972 and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I bought my first website from the O'Neill dive shop at the Harbor. Learned to surf at Cowells Beach, wearing O'Neill Seal Suits and Super Suits and Animal Skins, chasing Jack O'Neill around in his balloon with Mad Mike driving. Timmy O'Neill pushed me out of a dingy in the harbor channel once but I've forgiven him. They called Jack "The Cheese" but apparently I've been gone a while because I wasn't aware there was an entire restaurant, bar and lounge dedicated to The Cheese. Went there on a Thursday night in June and didn't have enough quarters to pay the parking meters on that uphill. Got lucky and found a parking space at Cowell's and used the change machine to get $5 in quarters, which is what it cost to park for a couple hours. Walked past a mural dedicated to several decades of Jack O'Neill going back to the 1950s: wetsuits, boats, hot air balloons, smiling girls. The air smelled like stale fish and salt. Inside was a clean, well-lighted place somewhere between funky and luxury .But closer to luxury. They've done a nice job with this place. The prices are reasonable in a city and a state and a time where prices can be unreasonable. Sat at a table up against the window, with a view over Cowells and the wharf and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and the lights of all the fishing boats in the bay I ordered the loaded fries with avocado, which is kind of like french fry nachos. And they were good. Lots of Cheese. It's a smart idea to dedicate an entire restaurant to The Cheese, as this place is over the dirt where the first O'Neill Surf Shop was in Santa Cruz was way back when starting around 1959 when Jack moved his business and his family down to Santa Cruz and was perfectly positioned for the surf boom lit by the movie Gidget that exploded into the Beach Boys and Frankie and Annette and everybody went surfing. Only glitch was when I asked the bartender for the bathroom code and he looked at me askance and wouldn't give it up. He said it was for hotel guests only. Aren't food establishments required to provide bathrooms to customers? If I had any friends, I would take them to the Jack O'Neill Restaurant and Lounge. It's got atmosphere. P.S I've interviewed around a dozen white shark attack victims. I get their stories and tell them: "You had a rough day. I'll see if I can get you a new wetsuit. Look at the O'Neill catalogue and tell me what you want and I'll call Pat O'Neill." And Pat always comes through with quality neoprene, so maybe a restaurant for him some day?
