What a gem in Costa Mesa, providing the public with free meditation classes (donations are always welcome!). Gil and Marilyn are SO welcoming, and somehow manage to remember everyones names. The first time I came in was by myself for the Wednesday night group practice led by Gil. The next time I came in was with my cousin, who had no prior meditation experience at all, and she loved it. I randomly found this place online when I was looking to get back into meditation a few months after I completed a Vipassana course. Although Shambhala is different, the 7:00pm class opens with an introduction and instruction to approaching this style of meditation. Note that the space itself is *behind* the Coco's. If you're facing the restaurant, to left you'll find a hall that you pass through. Make a turn towards the salon and you'll find the Meditation Center. The space is warm and clean, be sure to check in with Marilyn or Sepi at the front desk to say that you're new. You take off your shoes (you might want to wear socks) and enter the meditation hall closed off by silkscreen doors. No need to bring pillows or a bloc as very comfortable ones are already provided for you. For those who have trouble sitting cross legged or kneeling on the floor, there are three ample rows of chairs behind the floor seating. The temperature is mild--I wore a jean jacket with a t-shirt underneath and was comfortable the whole session. After practicing two sets of walking and sitting meditation, the class sat in a circle and read a chapter from The Lost Art of Good Conversation, by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. The discussion that followed provides an excellent connection between how the physical and mental exercise of meditation translates to our everyday lives. You have nothing to lose by dropping in. I hope to provide an updated review after attending one of their Saturday sessions or courses. For a fee, they have really cool contemplative arts seminars. There's many free books, some in Vietnamese & some in English for distribution at the monastery. You can come here to meditate for a couple of hours or stay overnight or stay for a couple days when the monks & nuns are here. It is best to call & arrange in advance. You can also come for temporary ordain as a nun or monk here. As long as you arrange in advance there will be someone here to help you to shave your head & have a set of robe in your size ready for you to take the precepts in Pali. It is a very nice & wonderful place to meditate & ask questions & guidance from the abbot here. He's very compassionate & readily answer any questions you have about Vipassana meditation.

Worst meditation ever!!!…read more They book an area at the mall West Elm store which we where meditating in between furniture and not enough space. People had to meditate on store furniture that people will buy. They forgot to tell people to turn off their cell phones before it started and said it during the process one the text messages were coming through. Not only that the person cell phone who didn't turn it off stared receiving phone calls during the process that's when I decided to just walk out!! Also before I forget there was people knocking on the glass store trying to get in. I don't know if it was a customer or a person who arrived late to class. This group doesn't know how to make a zen place. Don't even waste your time!!! Save your gas! If I could give less then 1 star I would. So, I received a reply to my comment and the event said nothing about a real life meditation event. So I liked how the event coordinator tried to cover their errors instead of just apologizing.
