Happy Earth day! By far my favorite beach in San Diego. Yes it can get pretty busy but the beach is big enough to fit all sorts of number of people. There is beach volley ball courts, close walking distance to lots of food spots, dog area is lovely for your furry friends (do note there can be many dogs, just make sure your dog is in a place to be surrounded by many dogs) you can do a fire pit in the evening if you wanted to. Lots of folks surfing. Overall pretty clean beach, parking can be tough to find as it is all street parking. First come first serve as all beaches usually are. Close to many other beaches nearby to visit if you wanted to beach hop. read more

You know what? I love it here. I love living here. I love walking here. I love exploring here. You got sunset beach I go sit at and read my book or run if I'm feeling up for it. If you go to this little park space at the top of the hill, you can lay on the hood of your car and look at the stars in the sky while listening to the waves crash below. Space closes at 10pm. Catch the sunset while you're there. There's a reason they call it Sunset cliffs. So absolutely beautiful. No better view. Hit the farmers market on Wednesday evenings. There is something for everyone! Music, massages, organic soaps and candles for aromatherapy, and of course FOOD! Or walk the antique shops/Thrift stores along Newport any day. They all have something fun inside. Best place for people watching. Get you a slice of pizza and a brew at Newport Pizza and Ale house, sit outside and watch the world pass you by. Ocean beach has the longest pier on the West Coast , I absolutely love Ocean Beach... it definitely has one of the best sunsets I've ever encountered. There's very limited parking but you can find parking near by and walk around . There's lots of cute restaurants & bars and coffee shops in the surrounding area . I have to come back to change my review after careful thought. I can not judge a place by some dope head on the corner. I recently came back to OB specifically to buy some black licorice ice cream from the lighthouse. I noticed it was low tide and walked out to go and see what the structure looks like with the water so low. I actually took the most amazing picture EVER. Please go look at it! Even the colors were magnificent. We are truly blessed to have such an amazing place to go and get away. You can watch the surfers, go swimming, explore at the tide pools, fish from the pier or just go shopping along with a bite to eat and have some awesome drinks. Beautiful beach with a very large and diverse demographic of visitors, although I do think it leans more towards the younger side. Lots of surfers, potheads, tourists, families, retirees, beggars, and high school/college aged students. It's a very stereotypical SoCal experience with the numerous blondes and dreads everywhere, the smell of weed and ocean water in the air, and the crazy beautiful beach with a stunning sunset. The culture of the beach reminds me a lot of Venice Beach in LA, but less people trying to sell you stuff and more people just hanging out. Tons of good places to eat nearby. I feel like it would be especially great on a spring or summer night when it's really warm out. I would definitely come back, and hopefully sometime soon. read more

OB home of Hodad's and so much more! I use to avoid OB because I worried about the homeless population but it seems that has improved. Recently to OB coffee roasters and I really enjoyed it. Discovered all the great antique shops that I didn't know existed. There are so many great little shops and restaurants around the area. And let's not forget the water is just steps away. You can spend the entire day in OB. Start your morning with breakfast and coffee, then grab lunch walk around the beach and then grab dinner. If you have room for it there are bars around to grab drinks too! Very causal laid back area. Been here for almost seven years and the town has steadily gone down hill while the rents have gone sky high. Ocean Beach has become the town of choice to place San Diego's "Unsheltered" population almost all of who have drug abuse and other psychiatric disorders. We receive little to no support from the City of San Diego. Violence also on the rise. read more

One of my first stops during my trip to San Diego, Ocean Beach has a phenomenal view of the Pacific located off of Nimitz Blvd. and Sunset Cliffs Blvd. The place was packed with surfers, sunbathers, happy retirees, yoga groups, and tourists from all over walking on the white sand. Parking can be a tremendous hassle and we were hard-pressed to find a parking spot until a lady saw us waiting and motioned over to us as she was putting away her surfing gear. We eagerly took the spot which was next to a grassy area filled with local college students performing gymnastics and acrobatic moves. It was really cool to watch them as it reminds me of some of the moves performed at a Cirque du Soleil show. After a few minutes, the group decided to take a break and we walked south towards the pier. The surrounding area is filled with tourist shops, bars, tattoo parlors, and restaurants lined up and down the street adjacent to the beach. We continued towards the end of the street and climbed the steps leading to the pier. The pier was a massive boardwalk that led about a quarter of a mile out to the water. There were people fishing everywhere, some who have been there all day with several rods resting against the railing hoping to catch the big one. We spotted several artists selling their paintings as we walked by. Some of the pictures were abstract paintings while others were canvas paintings of the beach and various landmarks around town. As we ventured further out, we saw a souvenir shop selling ice cream, candy, bottled water, and various articles of clothing or accessories with a San Diego logo. We found a small countertop display that had sunglasses for $9.99. It was perfect timing since it was almost 90 degrees out and the sun was out in full force. Next door to the shop is a restaurant called the Ocean Beach Pier Café which serves Mexican soft tacos, large breakfast plate offerings of three-egg omelets, tall pancake stacks with bacon and sausage links, humongous burgers, and seafood dishes such as fish and chips or clam chowder bread bowls. I saw a server bringing a monster plate of nachos to a single diner that was big enough to feed a group of four people. One of the highlights of this beach is Sunset Cliffs further down the road. These rocks provide a phenomenal view of the coast and a panoramic shot of the Pacific. I can see this as a popular place for people to get married against the backdrop of a setting sun. The best part of walking along these cliffs is the feel of the ocean spray on your face and the sound of the crashing waves as well as the seagulls flying overhead. There is no shortage of local activities as this beach seems to be crowded all day until sunset. This is definitely a place worth visiting if you're from out of town and want to spend the afternoon getting your tan on. read more

I think I was more towards the end of the beach then the "main" part. It was a cool afternoon but still sunny out. The beach was calming. Parking here is tight and can be difficult but not as hard to get a spot as Pacific Beach was. The beach seemed clean and I believe had a wash station though I just went in the car with sandy feet. I give it a 4 because the parking was better here than PB. Beaches here can't compare to Hawaii but hey it's a heck of a lot better than back home! read more

While at Ocean Beach, went in here for early dinner. The sushi was fresh and prepared to order. I tried the Bartenders Signature Cherry Old Fashion. Yes I said Cherry. It was delicious. They have happy hour and daily specials. There is something pretty cool about eating sushi when you are in a tropical/beach location. Of all the beach communities in San Diego, I must say that OB is by far my favorite. There are tons of awesome and delicious restaurants (anywhere there is a Pizza Port is OK by me!) as well as an eclectic choice of bars. You can grab a bite of sushi at one of the many sushi bars or a slightly famous hamburger from Hodad's. The people watching here is on point. I can't think of a place better than OB to really sit back and pay attention to all the things that make us humans different and unique. From long haired hippies practicing their couple's acrobatics, to bright red tourists, to dreadlocked wanderers to the guy that made a mini trailer for his skateboard, they're all here. I can't promise that everyone will love OB, but I can promise that you'll come out feeling different than you did before your first visit. You'll either notice all the grit, the sometimes sketchy people and the faint to strong scent of marijuana wherever you go and be appalled, or you'll find it charming. And I say, charming. read more

Who to write my 500th review on? I deliberated for some time and finally decided that reviewing my old neighborhood would be a good sentimental choice. I've always loved this area--OB has kids, college age, young working folks and senior citizens who have lived there since they bought in the 50's or 60's. Such a diverse crowd and they are very protective of their community, residents and small businesses alike. They are part of a national Main Street Association and work together to create the wonderful 4th of July fireworks show, Christmas Tree Parade, Kite Festival, Annual Street Fair and Chili Cook-off etc. There are innumerable chances to become involved in local community boards and committees to work on these activities and protect the character of OB. When I lived in the area and owned a small business here I loved the feeling of being in a close-knit community where you couldn't walk down the street or sit in a restaurant without seeing people you know . This was as close to living in a small town as I was going to get. I loved the way people rallied together to combat density and promote height limits so the area wouldn't be as crowded as PB and Mission Beach. It's still gotten crowded over the years but could be so much worse. I'm only sorry that the rents have gotten so high that it is getting harder for families and young people who don't make a lot of money to live there and more difficult, if not impossible for small businesses to survive. When the chain stores start to take over, the small-town ambiance will be lost. Two of my children went to Ocean Beach Elementary and I was very pleased with the quality of education offered. And on top of everything else they have one of the best Farmer's Markets around! read more

This beach was my first actual beach stop on my beach hopping day. As I was looking for a parking spot, I noticed a lot of homeless people hanging around the area. Parking was scarce to none, but finally after circling around the area a few times, I scored a curb side parking spot. I parallel parked and walked the short walk to the beach. It reminded me of Buckroe Beach in Virginia. For the most part, it was clean and quiet, despite it being a bit crowded. There was an outdoor shower circle, just off of the beach. This was the only beach that I noticed a shower on my beach hopping day. So that's a perk if you're driving your own personal vehicle. I was in my rental car so it wasn't that big of a perk, but I did use it. read more

Having recently moved to San Diego, everyone constantly recommends that I go to Imperial Beach on the many (many, many, many) sunny days here. However, everyone and their mother wants to go to IB on those days, as well. On the last gorgeous day here in SD, the hubs and I decided to go to the beach at around 1:30, figuring we would skip the early beach traffic. We headed to IB only to find the highway PACKED with people who also went later to skip traffic, so we made a quick detour and headed to the less traffic-y Ocean Beach instead. Prior to moving out here, I had been told that OB was the "ghetto" beach. BUT, I thought this beach was adorable. The town itself is very cute, very chill, and very much what I think of when I picture an old-school California beach town. There's a main drag with a ton of restaurants, souvenir shops, bars, and antique stores. The whole strip was very cute, and fun to walk along. The beach itself is nothing remarkable - it is pretty much a beach, but like most Cali beaches, it is beautiful. A part of the beach is the "dog beach" and even though I don't have a dog, I thought this was super cool, and spent a good 45 minutes just walking around petting people's dogs. There's also a rocky section of the beach that's fun to hop around, looking in tide pools or just treating as an obstacle course to get across. All-in-all, it is a very relaxed beach, not super high in tourists, mildly crowded, with a definite hippie vibe (the smell of marijuana overwhelms at points). Definitely would recommend for someone who wanted a chill day at the beach, but didn't want to deal with insane crowds. P.S. The Sunset is AMAZING. My husband and I sat on a rail overlooking the beach and watched it for a good half hour, and we both have hardcore ADHD. read more

I am a retired Police Officer and I want to see the eyesore of a Police Trailer in the parking lot at the end of Newport, GONE!!!!!!!!!! I love everything about OB. I love the people, I love the vibe, I love the Cliffs, I love the surf, I love the food, and well you get the picture that I love OB. As of May 09, 2013 that eyesore is currently abandoned. I am not sure if they are planning on bringing back into operation but the last thing I want to see are uniformed Police Officers walking around the Cliffs when you are trying to reconnect with yourself by sitting there are simply forgetting where you are by just simply soaking in the beauty of the Ocean slamming into the Cliffs only feet below you. It has a few gems, including the longest pier of the entire west coast, a great farmer's market, the best acai bowl in town at OB Smoothie Bar, Hodad's Burgers, People's co-op market, and Sunset Cliffs. This is no La Jolla or even Pacific Beach. OB is grungy and a few times I saw a beer-bellied man walking around saying his name is Jesus. It's always had live music, and good, cheap food, plus a couple more upscale options (Thee Bungalow, Qwiggs). Now, there's still cheap eats, but dozens of aces w/ amazing cuisine and high-end cocktails, wine and beer, including, some of my favorites: Wonderland, Bo Beau, OB Warehouse, OB Noodle House, South Beach, Nico's, Shades, Java Jungle, Newbreak, O'Bistro's, and more. A lot of different type of people here, you have a nice mix of young and old people. A lot of dog owners come out here so a great place to take yr lil mut.
