I took my little cousins to the open skate here. There wasn't a single person on the ice besides us. In a way this was nice because we had the ice to ourselves. The inside isn't too modern. It seems like things haven't been updated in a while. I'm not knocking it at all but it was just an observation that I made. My cousins and I had a fun time. On a hot day like today I was glad we were inside on the nice cool ice. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys going ice skating or is interested in playing hockey here. Ocean Ice Palace has been around ever since I was a little girl, and now at 31, I am not so little anymore. I grew up attending birthday parties at the rink, taking figure skating lessons, and going public skating on Friday nights with friends throughout high school. Figure skating did not become a hobby of mine, horseback riding did, but the love for ice skating has stayed with me throughout my life and my memories of the Ice Palace are embedded in my mind. I recently revisited the Ice Palace to watch my cousin play hockey. He is a member of the premier Junior league the Jersey Shore Whalers and the Ice Palace is his home rink. My cousin is now 17 and has been playing hockey for as long as I can remember, and watching him and his teammates play for the Whalers has shown me what an incredible job his coaches and the league itself has done over the years to transform him into a fantastic hockey player. The Whalers work hard and train hard. Fights do break out ON the ice, as you see in any NHL game, but NOT off the ice. I have gotten to know many of the young men who play for this league besides my cousin, and they are all gentleman. The league builds men, not just quality players. The league also fosters team playing, friendship, and respect, on and off the ice. The guys all dress up and wear shirts and ties before and after each game. The league keeps the sport classy, as all sports should be. Ocean Ice Palace is also home to the Brick Hockey Club, and members of the club have gone on to to play for several colleges and even the NHL. I know this because I'm a Flyers fan, and James van Reinsdyk played for Brick Hockey! (He also played for the Maple Leafs I think). Beyond the hockey clubs, the rink still has its charms. You can still go public skating on Friday nights, take beginning figure skating lessons, or have a birthday party. The snack bar is still full of warm hot cocoa and big soft pretzels and makes Ocean Ice Palace a fun place to go, whether you are an adult or child. I give this rink a lot of credit. Hockey is not a popular sport in Jersey in comparison to football, baseball, and baseball. Ocean Ice Palace provides the ice time for the local high schools to have a hockey team, as well as be the home rink of premier junior leagues like the Whalers. Ocean Ice Palace brings new life and excitement back into the sport of hockey in New Jersey. If you want to public skate, learn to skate, or if you are seriously interested in hockey, this is the place for you. The rink doesn't get 5 stars because figure skating really does take back seat to hockey, you need to go to Wall Township or elsewhere if you want to pursue figure skating on a higher level. Regardless, Ocean Ice Palace is one of a kind. Check out their schedule and even drop by to see a junior league play. The ice is nice, the bathrooms were clean. The lower level was nice, but the refreshment place was not open. The worst feature in this place is the upper level. You can not see the closest wall when sitting, and so, everyone stands. I find this VERY unsafe, as the railing is way too low (not sure how they've stayed open this long without being closed down for it or someone severely hurting themselves). Not only is it too low, half of it is open railing. Anyone, especially children, can fall over- or through it. If you go to watch any competition, expect to stand though- whether you're elderly, handicapped, pregnant, scared of heights. They will not ask people to stand downstairs, and they will not ask them to sit. read more

Saw an ad for the bumper cars on ice and was very intrigued to attend! The ad made it seem as if the bumper cars would be on the whole rink, yet once we arrived we noticed it only took 25% of the ring. (Which is ridiculous since the cars are huge, too!) We took an 1h and half drive here and we arrived early before their 5 o'clock start... We were told walk ins were welcome and we had a group of 4. Yet once we came back at 5 they said we needed reservations and the whole place was booked. They only had spots for the later time, and our group wasn't even going to be set together! The ice is still as bad as it was in 1994. Like skating on concrete sometimes, and grooves or dips around the boards. The pro shop is EXTREMELY overpriced. When I played for Brick High School, and had very little money, the shop worker tried to tell my mother that I "NEEDED" to have $500 hockey skates for JV hockey. I got a pair of Bauer skates that lasted me through college at a sporting goods store for around $100. I went in for some friction tape a few months ago and the store had almost nothing in it. I guess people realized how bad the store is. There are several better rinks in the area (winding river, Ice World, even wall, and that's saying something). For area kids looking to hang with friends, nothing wrong here. A buck or two more than the others for public skating, but locals won't need to waste the gas traveling to neighboring towns. For leagues, experienced skaters or players looking for equipment, go elsewhere. read more

Haha, love this rink! All the negative reviewers, what are you looking for, Madison Square Garden?? Unreal. Especially like the reviewer who gives it 3 stars, yet says he loved the rink!?!? As for the railing being too low, guess what? Thats part of the allure of this place, and somehow its survived decades without any problems, But Im sure anyone under the age of 30 would fall since their nose would be locked on their cell phone and not the railing! And would be looking to sue because it COULDNT be their fault they werent paying attention. read more

There is no way to sit and watch a game, so if you are elderly or handicap, expect to stand if you want to see. The railing is a danger to children and anyone who may be bumped near it. The parking is inadequate, as is the handicap parking - and although there isn't enough parking, beware... the rink calls the police to hand out tickets. I know people who were even parked on the side, no signs any where, but they still called the police to give out tickets. Nice, right? Come to our rink, we don't have enough parking, but we'll still call the police on visitors/parents. No warning either (it's small enough they could have called out and said we need these cars moved). When we called and asked the woman in charge at rink just yessed while doing other stuff, you could hear the papers- completely rude. If you don't have to go here, don't. There are other rinks around. Have to say this, the ONLY positive- the cafe has nice, friendly people. read more
