A crabby dinner needed to happen...immediately! I recruited an adventure buddy and we made plans to meet at Grappling Crab Shack's creekside home base on a rainy Saturday evening. We arrived around 5pm, about an hour before closing, and thanks to the rain, we had the place almost entirely to ourselves! If you've never been, Grappling Crab Shack is a local family-owned business specializing in fresh Maryland blue crabs, gourmet crab cakes, seasonal seafood specialties, catering and a food truck that travels throughout the area. It's one of those hidden gems that feels like you've stumbled onto a local secret. Since it was our first visit, we decided to do what any reasonable seafood lovers would do....order basically everything! First up were the Crab Stuffed Deviled Eggs ($18 for six). Holy. Cow! These were TREMENDOUS! The filling was loaded with crab, each egg was topped with a little bit of bacon and they disappeared from the plate embarrassingly fast. If you visit Grappling Crab Shack and don't order these, I genuinely think you're making a mistake! Next came the Cajun Jambalaya ($10) with chicken, smoked sausage, tomatoes, trinity vegetables and Cajun spices. This was excellent. Smoky, flavorful, and carrying just enough heat to let you know it was Cajun without setting your face on fire. My adventure buddy never once reached for hot sauce, which says a lot! Then came the Cheesy Crab Bites ($15). These might actually be my favorite surprise of the evening. Homemade crab cake mix blended with mozzarella, cream cheese and garlic, rolled in panko and Old Bay, fried until golden and served with a house remoulade. I'd choose these over mozzarella sticks every single day of the week! The cheese pulls were absolutely glorious, and the remoulade added the perfect tangy finish. Finally, we tackled the Gourmet Crab Cake ($17). This thing was HUGE! Made with fresh Maryland blue crab, it was beautifully seasoned, perfectly cooked, and held together much better than several crab cakes I've had recently. I'm actually glad we skipped ordering it as a sandwich because the crab cake itself deserved to be the star of the show. Our total came to right around $60, and considering how much food we ordered, plus the leftovers we both brought home, I thought it was money well spent. We grabbed one of the covered tables out back overlooking the yard and listening to the creek rush by. Despite the rain, it was a really relaxing place to enjoy dinner. I can only imagine how nice it is on a sunny summer evening. The staff couldn't have been kinder, bringing everything out to us with smiles and making us feel right at home. This place is an absolute hidden gem and one of my favorite seafood spots to have checked out in the last few months! I'll definitely be back, preferably on a dry evening when I can fully enjoy the creekside setting. If you love crab, seafood, or just supporting awesome local businesses, don't sleep on Grappling Crab Shack. And whatever you do...order the deviled eggs!

It used to be called Sad Seafood. This place has been around for years and has always been known for its amazing crab cake sandwich, but today I didn't want to catch any crabs, so I got myself some fish instead. I ordered the lunch special, and I must say, the mac & cheese is very good. The cabbage, of course, were a little bland--I personally would prefer a bit more vinegar. The fish was crispy with a nice seasoning on it, too. I think it could definitely taste better, though; personally, I like a little spice or "bite" with my fish. However, I guarantee it would pair perfectly with the sweet potatoes if it were just a little bit hotter! The pricing is very reasonable, and the amount of food you get for the size is delightful. I will definitely be back--maybe next time for some crab cakes and hush puppies, especially since there are no more Long John Silver's in the Harrisburg area. The reserved table had been chosen with not only the size of our party considered, but also to accommodate two wheelchairs. Our server warmly greeted us and so our celebratory evening began. While my dad had a cocktail, I ordered a bottle of wine for the table. I have no problem (well, a little problem) with the markup of wine in a restaurant. The wine at the Tavern was exceptionally marked up. I ordered a 2014 Tempranillo. I do like a good Tempranillo. I was also intrigued by its $59 price. I thought I had found a hidden gem on the menu...I thought wrong. The bottle was presented to my husband who was across the table from me - it should have been presented to me since I ordered it. He was also not given a sommelier's taste, the wine was just poured for each of us. I'm not an absolute stickler about etiquette, but for such a high-end restaurant, this was out of place. I'm sure you are thinking that I just need to chill, and I'd normally agree with you, but we were not given the wine that I had ordered. Had it been properly poured, I would have noticed. It was nothing close to what I had ordered. It was the wrong varietal, wrong brand, wrong vintage, wrong country of origin. The only thing that was right was that it was a red. I knew that it didn't taste like what I had expected, but, without seeing the bottle, why would I ever expect to be served the completely wrong bottle of wine? Even Olive Garden gets it right. This should never have happened at the Tavern. I don't know what I expected from the server when I brought it to her attention. I didn't expect to be brushed off. The whole thing was just completely unacceptable. At least it had a similar price. As for the food, it was ok - nobody had anything that was really "wow". My husband and I shared the flambéed Greek cheese. It was blah and even the presentation was just meh. My dad's steak was tough as was my veal. My husband said his swordfish was cooked perfectly but had no flavor, even with its topping of shrimp. There was absolutely no effort given to the plating of any of the food. There was not enough bread served for everyone at the table and no effort was made to replenish it. The butter was a handful of individual packets strewn on the bread plate. Again, plating. The serving sizes were large - we all had lunch the next day. I didn't bring in the cake that I bought. We all decided that paying a plating charge that was over half of the cost of the cake was ridiculous. We ate it at home. My dad's special dinner was $600 for the 6 of us. If things had been on point, I wouldn't have batted my eyes (too much), but dinner was far from on point. My dad was happy that he got to spend time with his family and I'm blessed that I was able to share this day with him. But, I'm also disappointed that the Tavern on the Hill did not deliver. At all. The steak was cooked perfectly, and their crab cakes are almost entirely crab with very little filler. The mushrooms are so good I could honestly eat a plate of them by themselves. And then there's the salad. If you know, you know the Glass Lounge does not play around with the carrots. I personally LOVE them, but whenever I bring someone new, I warn them that if they aren't a big carrot person, ask for light carrots! We finished with the peanut butter pie, which is also delicious. Dinner for two, including a beer and cocktail, was about $137 before tip. Prices seem a little higher than I remember, but honestly, what isn't more expensive these days? The Glass Lounge isn't fancy and that's part of why I love it. It's small, has a huge bar, and has that old school neighborhood/dive-bar feel while serving genuinely excellent steaks and seafood. There's a reason people several towns away know about this place and recommend it. Still a 10/10 after all these years. I'll keep coming back, and I'll keep bringing people with me. If you're going on a weekend, though, make a reservation. This place gets BUSY.

There have been many favorite restaurants that just aren't the same anymore but I am thrilled to say the Glass Lounge isn't one of them. I had seafood and my husband had filets with a crab cake in addition to our butterfly shrimp appetizer and ending our meal with a slice of carrot cake and a slice of cheesecake. Food was excellcent and so was our server. If you've never been here, go, you won't be disappointed. Side note: make a reservation because they are always busy.
