Good deals on pitchers here, its a loud, brash bar with two levels, beer pong upstairs, projection screen on the wall, and just lots of dudes. Lots of them. I guess that's okay. If you've already picked up Bud Light as your date. Contrary to the college bar atmosphere though, the bouncers card fairly hard here. So you probably won't see extremely young people here. Bar hopping stop #1: Off the Wagon. Typical undergrad sports bar, complete with darts and a foos table. Awesome! $1.50 a game breaks the wallet a bit, especially when we were playing for as long as we did. Where else will you see a guy making out with a girl, while having his arm stretch behind her and trying to text at the same time? You get what you expect from an NYU bar. It's crowded, loud, and has a younger scene. The bar is regular priced, $5 for bottles of Bud lights. The Happy Hour deals seem quite reasonable, but I probably would try to find somewhere else if I was looking for a Happy Hour. Don't you have enough money to spend going out? Off the Wagon is a decent choice of place that you go when you don't have much $$$ in your pocket. An average sports bar. They serve draft beer by the pitcher and always have some "specials". Go there (no need at all to get dressy) expecting to find college people. Sometimes is just too crowded (especially when sports are on). They have beer pong night tournaments. If you are up to play (and get drunk) write you party name on the board and have fun! They serve food, mostly finger food. Restrooms are too small and always busy. read more

Being a beer pong champ back in college (we called it beruit), I was a fan immediately of this place but it is damn near impossible to get a table to play. One time I had my name on the blackboard but some random drunkard decided to erase the entire list and put his name first. Awesome spot if you're into the college/frat screne with a tight budget. I think my experience here was summed up in a question I was asked on a Monday - $1 beer night - by a frat-tastic looking, styled hair and polo shirt wearing boy who looked about 3 years younger than me and 1 year younger than the drinking age... It's dirty. Everywhere you turn, you will find frat boys and popped collar bros. There's extremely sloppy beer pong. Drunken People's Greatest Hits, such as "Come on Eileen," eminate from the speakers. If you are 23 and come to Off the Wagon, NYU kids will sneer at you and call you "grandma." So why tolerate all of this? The cheap, yet obscenely strong drinks in huge glasses, my friend. I think there are occassions when the bartender has forgotten to put soda in my vodka soda. If you're looking for somewhere to chit-chat with your friends, Off the Wagon is not the bar for you. If you're looking to get to business (and by business, I mean getting sufficiently buzzed), you're in the right place. read more

In my experience, (and I speak only from observation, not from experience) this is one of those bars where a good percentage of the people present will make out with another person also in the bar. Definitely a crazy college bar, cheap and crowded, but the 80s and early 90s music they play on video screens throughout the bar is great! read more

Loud and crowded, but what else could you expect on a Saturday night? Drinks were nothing special, although I when I ordered a martini with two olives for my very picky friend, the bartender gave me two martinis with one olive each, even when I saw him pull out two glasses and repeated my order he held up a finger to shush me. Wednesday is Ladies' Night, so $3 well drinks for us after 8 pm. My suggestion: start by going to 3 sheets saloon (part of the same franchise), gobble up some of their epic yummy cheese fries, take advantage of their happy hour from 6-8, then come to Off the Wagon and spend the same amount of money on drinks past 8 and you have yourself an everlasting happy hour on a Wednesday. Strategic and cheap, yes I know. But that's what I am here for. It's true that Off the Wagon has a more diverse crowd (and thus tends to have a wider selection of attractive people to stare at, flirt with, frolick etc--whatever your creepy heart desires) and that it has more room because of its two floors and that it plays decent music. But...unless you're coming with a group to have epic beer pong battles with or you're determined to conquer suave men in suits/frat boys, it's more of a once in a while type of venue. I don't think I'm young enough to be in a bar like this anymore. It feels like being in one of those college bars off campus or a frat-house. They have a bar on the main floor and upstairs. While the one upstairs seemed easier to grab the bartender's attention for a drink, they had two beer pong tables set up right in front of it so it was hard not being in someone's way as you are standing in front of the bar trying to enjoy your drink. I lost count of the number of times I was bumped into and interrupted ever time a ping pong ball rolled between my feet. Also the music is really loud, kinda hard to socialize with people. I am familiar with the other locations in the city, and while they have great bar deals, I think the beer pong ruined it for me and some of the obnoxious people playing it too. read more

On a drunken Saturday night in NYC me and my best friend stumbled upon off the wagon. Let me be honest, we saw a ton of cute guys standing outside and decided we must go in and check out the scene. They had such GREAT music playing in there! I couldn't stop myself from dancing away, even if I was the only one singing along and jammin out, I didn't care! The place was crowded and I met so many great people. There was a game of beer pong going on upstairs which was pretty cool, but the coolest part of the bar was the foosball table!! I loved the staff here, from the doorman to the bartenders... seriously best personalities ever. I see people in other review complaining about the drinks but my cape codders (cranberry and vodka) were clear as all hell. I think they put a splash of cranberry in my drink. And the Washington Apple shot we had was made perfectly. No complaints from me! I don't care what anyone says about this bar, because my friend and I had a great time here... read more

For Sunday football - there's no better place to be other than a bar that has every single football game playing all at the same time! They have probably 15 TVs, each showing a different game and if you sit on the balcony on the 2nd floor, you'll have the best seat to watch every single game instead of looking up at the TV's you'll be looking slightly down which is the natural position for your head. Anyway - tater tots and wings are good here. Nice and Meaty them wings are. Beer is very cheap during the games. The only qualms i have about this place is that it's a cheap divey sports bar that will smell like stale beer forever. But it's cheap and you can go and spend 20 bucks, get drunk and full and you're set. read more

I want, I mean I really want, to give this place four stars. If I were still in college, it would be a no-brainer, but unfortunately I've moved on from the halls of my alma mater into the real world. Off the Wagon is the definition of a college bar (at least as close as you can get to one in NYC). Two stories, two bars. Bathrooms are downstairs and there's always a line no matter what time it is. Decor is cheesy but not overwhelming. So I came here with a bunch of friends for someones birthday party. We had this $35 all you can drink deal from 9PM-12AM and we made sure we got our money's worth. We sat upstairs by the beer pong tables (yes, you heard me right) and really enjoyed the prompt service from the bartenders. I mention this because many times when you do all-you-can-drinks at bars the bartenders will be lazy and uninterested in getting you a drink. Not the case here. Apparently they have crazy drink specials and whatnot (during the day on the weekends especially) so it might be worth checking the place out when I'm in the mood for some day-drinking on the weekend. Full-price pitchers for beer pong and flip cup were $13 which isn't bad but that can add up quick. I stuck to my "free" jack and cokes. Overall a good-looking crowd - friendly girls and their jealous boyfriends as far as the eye can see. Think there were plenty of singles, too, but I wasn't really interested in picking up a crazy 22 year old and dealing with "that", even for a night. 1 star off because the system for determining who's next at beer pong and flipcup is nonexistent and I am a sucker for order. 1 star off because although it's not an expensive bar, they still charge too much for drinks. Every time I come here its packed with drunk girls. This usually translates to awesome. But at off the wagon the girls are borderline underage, Fall over drunk, and way to eager. I would need straight gin shots to make it a non date rape situation, and though they are pretty, I am just not willing to go to such lengths anymore.... well not on a Saturday. I'm partial to dive bars with cheap drinks and good music, so this place definitely delivered in that sense. Happy hour is M-F 2pm-8pm so we ordered a couple pitchers of blue moon to wind down after a long day of.....eating and shopping. Haha. I can tell lots of folks come in to wind down from work though. Must be the button ups and dress pants that gave that away. Business attired men playing beer pong. There you go. 4 stars because the drinks were cheap and they played return of the mack amongst a sea of other crackin songs. I honestly never expect to hear music I like at dive bars so that was a pleasant surprise! I squealed when I heard it. Suspend your judgement. I just love that song. Minus one star because I left real quick to get a slice of pizza next door at Artichoke and couldn't finish it. I boxed it up and wanted to just bring it in the bar to hold while I continued to drink. Bouncer said no. So I literally had to eat the rest of my pizza in front of him before I could go back in. Or throw it away. And that was never an option. Have you ever had to awkwardly eat in front of someone while they just stood there? Yeah. It's uh, an experience. Oh well. Super Dive Bar to the max. I like places like this. Definitely set up for the younger crowd with beer pong stations, college night specials, sports on ALL television sets. The barstools were completely packed, there was dead space in the middle then booths on the side for sit-down waitress service only. We were using Off The Wagon as a standby location before a comedy show across the street. If you go upstairs, there's more dead space and bar tables & stools, perfect place to see all the games playing. There are even MORE beer pong stations there too. It's on the louder side. Since it was Sunday Funday, they had a $4 drink special, on wells and beers. To me that feels like free booze, haha. read more

I've only been here during late afternoon/happy hour. Understand what this place is and isn't. This is a casual, no frills, cheap college-atmosphere bar. The bartenders were friendly and efficient and the standard drinks we ordered were delicious and affordable. This bar is not meant to be anything other than a large, loud and divey sports bar. That's what it's trying to be and what it accomplished, so 4 stars for good price and great service. read more

I think this place is good to go with friends just to get hammered every now and then. I also feel like one of the ancient ones here when everyone else is 20 or 21 but beer is pretty cheap. Half off beers during happy hour every day of the week. From 2 pm to 7 pm, or something crazy like that. I was too dead tired to really pay attention to what was happening in there. I went in to fall half asleep on a booth while sipping on Guinness, and this place did wonders. Well, the music was a bit too loud, and there is a serious lack of chaise lounge of course, but over than that - Off The Wagon offers a nice shelter on a rainy afternoon in this part of town. Welcome back to college. Beer pong in the back, crowds surrounding the bar shouting to each other, and just a little more room to move around upstairs at the second bar. Off the Wagon is in a great location on Macdougal St with easy access to boozy bars and cheap eats. I consider this a warm up spot, because somehow there's always a crowd already in the party mood that will help get you there too. They do serve food, so if you get there early you can grab tables and settle in for the long haul. Drinks are cheap - not just for NYC, but actually pretty cheap. Ladies - the bathroom will not be nice when you go in and probably won't have toilet paper. Be prepared or hold it. Guys - sorry, but anyone standing in line can see you when the door opens! Wow this place can get really crowded and loud! You will have to push everyone out of the way just to use the restroom. No need to dress up if you swing by here because this is Greenwich village after all and everyone's wearing shorts and flip flops. I was a fool for wearing heels. Oh well, lesson learned. Here's what about four and a half years of living in NYC and turning 30 does to you. My friend's surprise birthday party is going to be at Off the Wagon on a Friday night: Brian V May 2004: I hope NYU students are still in session or this place is going to suck. Brian V May 2008: I hope NYU students aren't still in session or this place is going to suck. When the college students are around, this place is an absolute shoulder to shoulder can't move mob scene. When they aren't, it's kinda busy but not completely ridiculous. As others have mentioned, it is fratastic to the max. Beer pong, foosball, pitchers of Coors Original, etc. The best part about this place are the ridiculously cheap beer specials. Happy hour Monday - Friday is half place everything from 4-8pm. On the weekends, they run Beat the Clock pitcher specials where domestic pitchers start at $3.50 at and increase 50 cents every hour. One last tip, I wouldn't come here if your plans are to watch some sporting event. They have lots of TVs, but they are placed so high above the first floor that by the time you leave your neck will hurt (plus there won't be any audio). Basically, I give it three stars because it's good for what it is. If you're looking to relive the fraternity/sorority days or want to drink some ridiculously cheap beer on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, it's a good bar. If you're feeling a little old for that scene and/or enjoy some disposable income, you can go elsewhere. read more

This place is a transplant from a college campus. It smells like stale beer, has loud music and has crappy bar food. That said, this place is a 2/5 star bar in my book. Why not 1 you may ask? Well going to school in the Midwest, the stale beer smell with crappy food and too many people bar holds a special place in your heart. Decent beer assortment here and they usually have specials on bud/miller producuts. This is a good place to go with the guys after school/work to just grab a pitcher and forget the day. I am still a little puzzled by the 3-4 beer pong tables set up in this place though (anyone can play, just have to sign up). It seems to me I can find more exciting ways to get herpes but, to each their own I guess! Off the Wagon is like filling a Midwest bar with Manhattan locals. It is right in the heart of the west village and it is fun to just pop in, grab a couple drinks, then remember you have grown up since college. read more

Since I went undergrad at a school with no Greek life, I get the urge now and then to go to a dirrty frat bar. This place fills that need and more. Many other yelpers have hit on the fine points, but I'll add my 2 pennies: As you enter this fine establishment, you'll be hit in the face with the strong odor of stale domestic pilsner, tag body spray, and if you are lucky, the acetic sting of buffalo wings. Come on the right night, and the frugal drunk will quickly notice $1 beer specials. They come in a small cup, and they're not always the finest cask ale, but they'll get you drunk quicker than you can say, "I should've saved these singles for scores!" Don't come here looking for clever conversation, a "scene" or celebrity sightings. Even if you meet someone worth having said conversation with, the blaring music combined with others trying to shout over that music is like kryptonite to the game of one that woos with wit. In other words, as many others have said, come with buddies and a powerful thirst, and go home with more money in your pocket than you usually do on a night out in the city and probably not much else (maybe not even your dignity) read more

I'm not a bar person, really, but I went here with some friends and we had a great time. There was a great mix of people, mostly college students (which is fine for me as a college student, but not if you're looking for a more sophisticated crowd). My friends (who are single) and I (not single, but a completely awesome wingman) ended up talking to a super nerdy guy and his not so nerdy friend and then some weird scenester guys. The only down side was being at the table behind the beer pong and having to keep getting the ball for the people who were playing (and sucking.. at the game, I mean). I've been to Jake's Dilemma before, so I knew exactly what to expect when coming here. It's the bar you come to for a sloppy good time where nobody judges you. It's in a great location in the middle of Greenwich Village surrounded by bars, restaurants and tattoo parlors. We arrived soaked from the torrential downpours, but the bouncer was one of the nicest I ever encountered. That was nice right off the bat! Wemade our way to the upstairs bar where our friends already claimed a table (clutch!). The downstairs bar is long and the area itself is very narrow. Nothing fancy. There's some flat screen TV's, but nobody really pays attention to them. The upstairs bar is smaller, but we never had a problem ordering drinks. The liquor pours were a little weak, so I ordered a $7 absolut on the rocks to "get there" quicker. I was in love with the music selection! The DJ upstairs took requests, but I really only requested one song and the rest was great! It was a great crowd, nobody douchey. A ton of people came out even with the horrible weather we had. There was a bachelorette party.. I wouldn't necessarily choose a place like this to have mine, but they were shamelessly dancing and having a blast! God awful place but the prices really bump it up for the review. Being in a cool part of NY, I expected it to be More expensive but it was pretty chill. But this place sucks. Our waitress was a complete ass the whole night. She acted like we made her work that night. Gee sorry. Asked her for an extra menu and she said "if I can find one" okay. Delivered our food with no utensils or extra plates and had to continuously flag her down because she was constantly meandering around the packed place on Sunday football like she had nothing to do. On top of that, the bartender kept banging that damn bell over and over again. Why? And the crowd that hangs out there is bleh.
