Came here to meet up with friends and kill time before our dinner reservation. I tried the dry cider and as someone who is not exactly fluent in cider, I thought it was pretty good. My friend said it wasn't dry enough but my taste buds have not unlocked that level of expertise yet ... The place fills up pretty quickly at night, but it's a solid spot to grab a table, yap for a while, and use the bathroom (so important!). Prices are pretty reasonable too. Like many others, I was treated horribly by a female bartender for absolutely no reason (among other things, she accused me of asking her to commit a felony by closing out my wife's tab) and then relentlessly harassed about not leaving a tip. She tried to kick me out of the bar (I was already paying the check so that I could leave, so not sure what that was about...) and then waited for my wife outside of the bathroom and berated her until she was forced to leave a tip. I was out on a late night adventure in the East Village. I'd been to Broadway, seen a play, had a decadent dinner. I had hung out at one of my favorite spots, Goodnight Sonny. Sonny's is usually open til 4 AM, but it was winding down and I thought the bartender might want to close down early, so I headed out. Originally I was looking for a place called the Juke Joint. I went where Google maps instructed, but didn't see it (I found out later it was below street level), so I went into the building in front of me, the 12th Street Ale House. It's a classic bar, low lights, lots of wood. Jukebox. I told the Australian bartender I hadn't planned on coming there, but I have always found a way to where I'm supposed to be in New York (serendipity, baby). Almost simultaneously, we said, "but I bet next door they aren't playing Nina Fuckin Simone!" And indeed, he played some awesome Nina music, some of her well known songs, as well as some of her lesser known, soulful ballads. This was around 2 AM (they are open til 4 AM). Only two other people were there, including a lonely man who talked about how his son never speaks to him and he used to work for a big fashion designer. Shortly after, a Russian couple came in and ordered shots of Jagermeister, treating me as well (had never had it, hate licorice, never need to taste it again). One conversation broke into fashion, another broke into politics, nationalism, human rights. The drinks are ok. Nothing fancy here. Basic stuff. Not too expensive. But you don't come here for the drinks, right? This night full of main characters is not only a blast, it adds to your repertoire of interesting stories to tell at parties. They say what doesn't kill you makes you more interesting at parties. Jagermeister might be that for me. Didn't kill me, but left me with a story to tell at parties. Went in early on a weekend wanting a reasonably-priced drink (there's happy hour daily) and know that this place has alot of history in the city. The crowd was all white, which, I guess makes sense as the area has all manner of more international-looking places, and this Ale House looks like the type of bar that pepper Eastern college towns. I got a cider, and the Irish bartender was on it, though when I was taking a photo of the glass, he moved away because he doesn't want to be famous? lol. I'm probably going to bring my partner here sometime and see what she thinks: She's more a beer drinker than I. I walked in and checked out the beer menu and was impressed with the quality and variety. The Porter beer I had was probably the best of that style I've ever tasted. The bartender was super friendly, and I overheard my neighbors commenting that this was their favorite bar on earth. It's clean, there's a jukebox, there are happy hour specials and it's not super crowded - all positives for me. I'll be back. read more

It had space to socialize if you desired but also had options in the back that allowed for more intimate conversations. They also have a jume box if you wanna throw on some tunes. "I'm trying to find this bar that I used to go to on either 1st or 2nd avenue below 14th street but above Houston that's a dive or Irish pub on the north east side of the street". This was what was asked of me. After I listed a potential close to dozen or more bars that got a quick reject we went on a mission to find what this mystery place was that he insisted still existed. Eventually found it with an exclamation in passing "THIS IS IT!" "I SENT THAT ONE TO YOU." So, in hindsight, I correctly guessed the bar in question in my selection. I've been here before a couple of times but it's been a few years. Always have enjoyed it. It is a true dive. Apparently happy hour that we missed is until 7pm and beers are around $6. What I am impressed with is their beer selection. I don't remember this bar ever having craft beer 10 years ago but maybe my brain is just fogged up. But I tried one of the best milk stouts I've had in awhile and I'm still not over how great it tasted. I haven't walked around this neighborhood for about 20 years, I lived on 13th St. 38 years ago. I decided to drop in the 12th Street Ale House for a Draught and a Shot. It was Happy Hour so that was just $10 a bargain in NYC, ok I had two. The 12th Street Ale House was a comfortable and not pretentious bar. The music was varied and not loud so one could actually have a conversation. Scarlett was the young woman behind the bar and was very attentive, welcoming and a true joy to talk to. I'm declaring 2nd Avenue the official San Francisco street of NYC. With Finnerty's and 12th Street Ale house in spitting distance of one another, and some other random similarities (Stomp, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, bicycle lanes), it's a clear sisterhood of streets and cities. As far as bars go, 12th Street is nothing much to write home about though. The bartender is nice enough but overworked as the sole tender on weekends during March Madness. The bathrooms are grubby, tables are picnic bench style and the Juke Box has an affinity for Johnny Cash. The drinks are not as cheap as you'd expect for the digs and locale ($7 shots of well whiskey?) and the $20 credit card minimum is a joke. On the plus side, you can bring in outside food without any fuss and it definitely attracts a more local following than some of the other bars in this hood. read more

You can't get less than four stars if you have a happy hour from 5-8pm that consists of $2.50 for well drinks and $3.50 for draft. Definitely the cheapest happy hour in... well, in the tristate area (please feel free to correct me if you know a cheaper one!) Awesome. Of course there are inconsistencies as drink quality and taste vary from bartender to bartender, and the bartenders I've encountered are not that friendly or initiate conversation but I'll leave that as a result of manning a bar often full of cheap drink seeking individuals. Best happy hour deals around. $3-4 for Jameson on the rocks?? I mean, really. Where the heck else in the city do you find that? AND happy hour is until 7 (or 8...I forget). If you're looking for a scene, food or a place to find the man of your dreams this probably is not the place for you. This is a neighborhood bar with a neighborhood feel during the week. You can bring outside food in. Friday nights is a different story. It's packed and filled with a very eclectic crowd. I wouldn't have found this place were it not for my friend, who works at NYU. 12th Street was her suggestion, and we met up for drinks (lots of drinks) in May 2015. Who knew you could get beer for just a few bucks in Manhattan? Well, the locals, that's who. The bar is laid back (cash only, though), with clean bathrooms - singles - and cool staff. It was pretty empty when we arrived, around 5pm on a Thursday, but was packed when we left around 9pm. My phone wasn't doing well in the concrete forest that is NYC, and I offered the bartender $5 to let me charge it using his charger (and his electricity). He declined the $5 (but thanked me for the offer) and allowed me to help myself to 20 or so minutes worth of juice. Much appreciated. read more

I love a quiet bar and that is exactly what 12th Street Ale House was. I was originally supposed to go to another bar next door but it was hosting a party so I stopped in at 12th Street Ale House and it was a perfectly wonderful little bar that was not crowded (on a Thursday). There were folks there who were a wide range of ranges - another win. As I get older I just can't deal with the crowds and waiting forever to get a drink and getting jostled. So this spot was great to get a drink, get a seat and be able to hear the person or people you are with. read more

3.5 stars Wanted a few beers before a concert in the area on a Saturday night. Every place I went to in the area was so busy but found the Ale House half full. Perfect. Reminds me of a local neighborhood bar, nothing fancy just the bar basics. This was the my first visit to a cash only bar. Had to settle up after every beer. Bartender forgot to collect for my first beer, being honest I reminded her and she appeared confused. I suspect a few beers go unpaid for with this cash system. Decent selection of craft beers and at a good price. I was drinking Allagash White for $6 a pint. Real mixed crowd on this night and only half full. Just a comfortable place to have a beer in peace. There is really nothing special about this bar. It is not super cheap but it is not expensive as fancy lounges or bars either. The place is popular among locals. It seems like a great place to pre-game before you head to other more happening nightlife venues. read more

Came here about a couple months ago but only posting a review now - when I came late at night with my partner, the bar was practically empty except for the bartender and this random older guy who was trying to make small talk with us. It was okay at first and then he kept trying to put his hand on my upper thigh (and succeeded once - to be clear my relationship status and partner sitting next to me was communicated multiple times). I kept trying to signal to the bartender that this was happening but he was too busy chatting up a friend that came later. Ended up escaping soon after this happened but was deeply unsettled/uncomfortable that a stranger thought it was okay to just literally feel me up in front of other ppl. Later on I called the bar to tell the bartender of my experience and while he did mention that the guy would be banned, he also blamed me for not doing enough at the moment to signal that this was happening. Tbh idk how many ppl would be able to say that they are getting felt up actively in front of the person doing it, the person doing its friend, their partner, and anyone else in the bar but maybe that's on me. Either way was a deeply upsetting end to the night to get blamed for something happening that bar staff could have prevented given it was so empty. Hopefully it's not an issue now given the person was banned, but I want to give a warning in case any other woman decides to venture here late a night because the staff will not look out for you read more
