I've always purchased ink for my HP printer from this location or from Office Depot online. Most recently, I purchased the same multipack of HP ink cartridges I usually do for my printer (1 black and 3 color cartridges). When I installed the magenta and cyan cartridges, I received a "printer failure" warning on the display (see photo). I tried everything the HP troubleshooting guide online offered, but I kept getting the same printer failure message. Finally, I thought perhaps there might be something wrong with the new cartridges, so I pulled them out and put the old ones back in. The printer failure message disappeared. However, I can't print with empty cartridges, so I took the pack of new but opened cartridges back to this Office Depot, and they said that even though the product is defective, they are not able to provide a refund for open packages of ink or toner. I asked to speak with a manager, and he said the same thing. They told me that my only recourse was to contact HP directly since the cartridges are HP products. I left the store and called Office Depot corporate, and was able to speak to a representative. They repeated the same return policy back to me. I refused to accept this and asked them how they could not resolve an issue with a defective product purchased from their company. It took about 30 minutes, but she finally did refund me for the defective cartridges. From now on I won't be purchasing ink cartridges from Office Depot or OfficeMax. I'll be purchasing them directly from the manufacturer, or from another store that will help when there is a defective product. read more

I went in with some custom artwork I created, and worked with someone at the desk to ensure it was produced as intended. the person I worked with seemed confident that it was going to produce well. I have a background in print production, so I made sure the files were high res and with the right settings. not only did the colors come out horrible, but they trimmed it unevenly. However,my last experience was a definite one star prior to that I thought well of it and the only way that it will go up is getting rid of the bad employees and that includes Stan! I did online pickup there and didn't even need to talk to a human... they have lockers you scan a barcode at. Look at you, Officemax! Remember back in August when your children were shopping for school supplies? Remember supply lists that just listed items like "pocket folders"? Remember when you stared at the five different types of folders in the store and wondered exactly what the heck kind was needed? If you're like me, you'd probably buy a variety just so you wouldn't have to make multiple trips, then afterwards return the unused stuff. In the case of the aforementioned pocket folders, I bought four kinds - with tabs, without tabs, vertically slotted and horizontally slotted. And that's just one example. Anyway, an extra bag or two of unwanted supplies get shoved in the back of the closet. Months pass. Receipt is no longer valid for return. Suddenly remember the bags are still there. Since it was for a fair amount of money, I go to Office Max but am not hopeful. Surprise, surprise. A sympathetic manager hears me out, doesn't lecture me and quickly puts the return through on a gift card. With this over-and-beyond customer service move, I'm going for the whole five stars. read more

I spent over an hour at the 907 W. 5th St., Austin, TX store today. A very simple (or so I thought) issue turned into a huge hassle and waste of time. I needed an electric stapler but wanted to pay with a co-employee's credit card, which I did not have in my possession, but which I had permission to use. I had really wanted to leave with this stapler and bring it to where it was needed. The Sales Consultant, Roderick, was amazingly great. Pleasant, very patient and extremely helpful. Unfortunately we were unable to process the transaction and I had to leave the store empty-handed. We tried almost everything. I signed up for a new online account, entered all the credit card information and was still unable to place an order that I could pick up at the store. Eventually (after trying to enter it on the computer on the counter first and then my iPhone) I thought I had placed an order with store pick-up, but I was wrong. It was set-up to ship to my billing address. The store Manager, Mike, stepped in at the end to try and help. We wanted to just change the shipping to store pick-up but were unable to do so. With the stapler and special sized staples in hand, at the counter, the only option we had was to cancel the order, which is what we did. I can't thank both Roderick and Mike enough for spending such a ridiculous amount of time with me (almost an hour and a half!), during the busy lunch hour. Their patience was impressive, as they too wanted to ring this up and let me go on my way, with my merchandise. Sadly, the "system" is too rigid and inflexible and it couldn't be done. Later on, after visiting your competitor, Staple's, and not finding the electric stapler model I was looking for, I got back on your website and placed an online order, for delivery tomorrow (hopefully). One good thing did come out of being forced to go to Staple's - I found a chair that works great at my office. So I bought this $299 piece of furniture at your competitor - a place I would not have been to, if I hadn't been forced there by your poor check out system. When a simple transaction can't be done in the store and has be be done online (after over an hour!), it's not hard to see why so many stores are closing. read more

Called Fedex and they located this store for me and quoted a $60 overnight fee for 10:30 delivery for an envelope. Went into the store and was assured I didn't miss the cut off time for pick up. They told me $104. Oops after checking that was a mistake. Envelopes are less than a package. I paid $60 for overnight by 10:30. Next thing....next day...no delivery. Call fedex ...no help....told to go to Office Max. Oops the delivery had never taken place. No, they didn't call me to tell me either. They gave me the package/letter back. Refund? They checked to see if it was possible. It was. Oh, I was reminded by Office Max that even though I paid for 10:30 overnight delivery, nothing is really 100% guaranteed. read more

Went in last week to get an office chair for my work computer at home and was quite impressed with the amount of chairs they had to choose from. Apparently this Office Max has made a change of heart. All the horrible reviews here I was hesitant to come even though I just needed printer ink and it's literally across the street from my place. They surprised the bejesus out of me. I was greeted with a "Hi, how are you." as I came in and the store was clean and well organized. It was incredibly easy to find the ink cartridge I needed and I even shopped around for a few more items. Checkout was fast and easy, and the associate was incredibly friendly and went out of his way to wish me a good day. Now I will say that this one associate (unfortunately I can't recall his name) was really great and there were some others milling about, so I'm not sure if he's just an all-star, but in any case the rest of the store was kept well and easy to navigate. I'm not going to comment on the prices of a lot of the supplies, but if you need lots of supplies go to Costco or shop online - you really shouldn't be shopping in an office supply store for anything aside from last minute items anyway :) read more

Not good for shipping. At any other OfficeMax location, shipping is a breeze. They've got a shipping hub at this location, but it's designed to be a FedEx drop off only. They won't give or sell you packing materials, and they expect you to have a FedEx account and to have your package 100 percent ready to drop off and go when you get there. Not helpful for the layperson's shipping needs. Unfortunately, they weren't courteous about their need for incoming packages to be ready for a quick drop-off and go either. If they'd been more upfront about it, not kept me waiting, and had a more knowledgeable person working the front, it would have at least been a pleasant failed experience. read more

This is my review of the new OfficeMax in The Shops at the Galleria, Bee Cave... This store used to be dog-friendly but no longer allows pets. I really hate to see a progressive store return to the dark ages but this one apparently has. I was told by the day manager (a Lab lover, no less!) that this change was made on his recommendation to the General Manager to avoid possible litigation. Anika's comment about waiting forever for help applies to this store too. I was the ONLY customer and couldn't get anyone to help me locate an item I was having trouble finding. I also agree with her comment about shopping at Office Depot. The service is better and they're dog-friendly. read more

Me and my Wife shop here frequently. The printing department has now completely pissed me off more than once. On 2 occasions they stated they could not get to my order until the next day, sometimes longer. We have walked in and they have completed orders on the spot. Now today, he was extremely rude to my wife on the phone. The customer service is non-existent. If the employees don't want to be there, let them go and allow people who want to work and help run that department. You are in downtown Austin, if it were my business, I would clean house and start over. read more

I'm only reviewing this because I was just there. All I wanted was the store brand black ink for my printer. That was the only stupid cartridge not in the store. They even had a sign saying "Ink and Toner Guaranteed in Stock". No it wasn't. So I look for a helper. I hold up a name brand single cartridge box and say "I'm looking for the Office Max version." She says "Okay," walks to the aisle with me and asks "Do you want to get a double pack?" What? NOOO! I just point to the empty slot for the cartridge I want. She says "let me go check in the back". She returns empty handed, "No, sorry we don't have that in stock, are you sure you don't want the double pack?" Oh my god. NOOO! "No I just have money for the Office Max brand" I tell her and leave. At some point she even asked if I use the black ink alot. If I was printing a big black box on white paper like a hundred times then yes maybe I will buy a double pack. But until then once I run out of ink I will get up and go buy some more. One...at...a...time. The staff here has been exceptional. If you ever have any printing questions/concerns, go see Karrah at the print center! Last month I came in with a last-minute printing request for our guest/client name tags since my company was hosting a large quarterly conference & evening event in downtown Austin. We were experiencing an office-move/several project deadlines while hosting this huge event - so it was a long week. The manager quickly walked me through different printing options and identified the most cost-effective approach. He put me in touch with Karrah at the printing center. Karrah is the ONLY reason we were able to print 100+ name tags that had correct spelling, font size, color logos, etc. in the short time available. She went out of her way to painstakingly troubleshoot the Avery name tag software with me, worked with my excel sheet to import information, checked each name tag to make sure it was perfect, and arranged for them to be laminated/cut all in time for my event. She made sure to do all of this for me in ONE day when she happened to be understaffed since some employees were out sick. If it were not for her hard work, I wouldn't have completed the project. She was fantastic and made my life much easier during a very stressful week! A big thanks to Karrah. read more
