If you are staying in the beaches region, you absolutely must make time for a show at Ogunquit Playhouse. 1. Its a legacy where a NUMBER of performers have taken stage and 2. You're seeing REAL shows. I was impressed that these shows are produced IN HOUSE, meaning they're not traveling off broadway shows- theyre truly nationally casted and then created for the Ogunquit stage! The sets are always impeccable, the orchestra fills the room with energy, and the performers bring the characters to life(also many of their bios include broadway- so they are top notch!!). The playhouse is quaint and charming, but don't think the shows are low quality. Ticket prices are reasonable, there is plenty of parking, acoustics ensure you hear. As far as seating goes, there is a floor and balcony level, but there isnt really obstructed seating. Tickets do go, so you want to call the box office early to plan your seating! I have seen many plays here, but most recently Kinky Boots. It was glamorous and lively. They do serve concessions at the theater and had a signature show cocktail in addition to offering wine, beer, and a 'cash bar' type of cocktail situation. They also have candy and other treats- our night they had cider donuts for fall. The playhouse is a treasure of Maine and an enjoyable experience for all. Long live the arts! read more

Not surprisingly, Ogunquit is mobbed with tourists during the summer. My wife and I really love scenic and tranquil Ongunquit, ME particularly during the off season. It's an easy day trip from Lexington...all-in the car ride is about an hour and twenty minutes. I sheepishly admit that I saw Clay Aiken play the lead role in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." The devil made me do it (the devil being my wife on this occasion). We had great seats and the playhouse has decent acoustics...sadly, up close Clay bears a striking resemblance to Bruce Jenner, if Bruce donned a crooked Pippi Longstocking wig. The playhouse was jam-packed with Clay's diehard fanbase: red staters and clesbians. I have never seen so many Subaru Foresters...I thought I was at Subaru dealership. read more

The shows are outstanding -- if you can see them. The sightline leaves something to be desired, if you get stuck behind people taller than you. Tonight I saw "Victor/Victoria." The show was great, but I could only see half the stage. The right half, where much of the action took place, I could see the back of some man's head. To make matters worse, in front of him was a taller woman. Lots of head-bobbing going on, but not by me. I would really like to see this show again, but the whole thing this time. read more

FUN, FUN, FUN! We saw the Ogunquit Playhouse as we pulled into the lovely town of Ogunquit and thought that would be fun to do. Turns out we were there for the opening night of "Anything Goes" with Sally Struthers & Andrea McArdie, the original "Annie" from Little Orphan Annie. We were lucky to get great seats in the middle about 10 rows back. There were many things we liked about this production. The acting was great with lots of fun and laughs. Another star of the show was the Cole Porter's first class score, "Anything Goes", "You're the Top" "It's De-Lovely" & "I get a Kick out of You". Fun fact about the show is Sally Stuther's real dog plays "Cheeky" in the play, a rescue she has had for 2 years. We ordered drinks in advance for intermission and the Procescco was served in a Playhouse Souvenir Cup which you can re-use and save! Such a great idea! The theater has walls of photos of previous talent who have played here, including Patty Duke, Eva Marie Saint, Bette Davis, William Powell, Van Johnson, Lorenzo Lamas, Bob Denver and list goes on! I visited Ogunquit Playhouse recently in Ogunquit, Maine. It's a nondescript little theatre but packs a big punch. I saw "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" with the lead actor as Clay Aiken. Clay Aiken was phenomenal as Joseph! Watch him sing "Close Every Door." You'll be inspired! The stage is small but it can house a lot of people at one time. The sound system was very good and you can hear very well in the theatre. Parking is always free for theatre-goers. You park right on the lawn! The handicapped parking lot is right beside the theatre and very convenient for people who need quick access in and out of the theatre. There is a little store that sells Ogunquit Playhouse merchandise, show merchandise and some other items. Customer service at the Box Office is very good and very professional. I was impressed! This unassuming theater is the GEM of Ogunquit. From the minute you walk up you are greeted warmly by the ushers and concessionaires. I've never experienced such pleasant greetings from theater staff before - absolutely lovely. The performance was EXCELLENT. My review is only my opinion of the Seating & Viewing of the stage area from seat " S 113" Center. The play/musical we came to see on Wednesday night was the "Heartbreak Hotel." The performance would have been great if I could have seen it from my seat. Only the acoustics in the theater was clear and crisp sounding - no complaints there. The seats in the theater are too close together, they are not staggered - they are almost directly behind/in front of the other. I tried looking in between the heads of the people in front of me but I had a very difficult time seeing the stage. Plus I thought the incline from the front to back of the theater should have been higher because maybe that would have given me the advantage of looking over the person sitting in front of me? Honestly, I would not waste my money again ($72 a ticket) to see a play at this theater not until they remodel the seating area. read more

This venue is awesome! I saw "Ragtime" and I was so impressed with the show, the playhouse, the staff and intrigued by its history. It really was such a genuinely great experience. We were seated in the middle and had a great view and the sound was perfect. The only drawback is the bathroom situation, although all theaters tend to have a long long lines at intermission. Great experience. The theater is celebrating its 85th anniversary and is a charming venue to enjoy a show. We saw Mama Mia and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The performance was high energy, the acting and singing were excellent, and the audience really seemed to get into it making the experience even better. I also am a season ticket holder for Broadway in Boston since it began. For summer stock theater Ogunquit is great. The sets are really good, the actors do a great job, and the seats are comfortable. I have seen three shows at the Ogunquit Playhouse to date, and it has quickly become my favorite local theater. While it is a bit pricier than other places I've been, the shows are also much more elaborate and the theater is much more comfortable. The only show I was even remotely disappointed in was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and that was only because Clay Aiken was horribly miscast. The productions of Grease and Mary Poppins I saw here this summer were both absolutely flawless and comparable to productions I've seen in New York. read more

Saw "Anything Goes" here last night (or as a patron of the Inn we are staying at called it "Everything Goes"!). First some words about the playhouse itself. This is clearly a well run organization. The parking lots are divided into "northbound" and "southbound" so patrons can exit efficiently (and it worked!). There is a small bar and a concession stand that serves non-alcoholic beverages and candy; lines at both were long but moved quickly. Patrons can go outside during intermission--and that's a good thing since the lobby was plenty crowded as it was!. All of the staff were pleasant and helpful. The lobby is decorated with autographed photos from stars past. Everything is spotlessly clean. The seats were a little on the "high school auditorium" side without a lot of padding, but they turned out to be comfortable. The production was fantastic. Set design and costumes were equal to what I've seen in Broadway shows. The actors were uniformly great and while I loved the stars (Andrea McArdle, Josh Canfield and Sally Struthers) the show was nearly stolen by the supporting cast. Standouts were Steve Brady as Elisha Whitney, Mychal Phillips as Erma, Ray DeMattis as Moonface and Ian Knauer as Lord Evelyn. I would go to see a show solely because any one of these 4 actors were in it, they were that good. The musicians and dancers were excellent too. The one quibble I had was that the actors mics were a tad on the loud side. That might have been because the audience skewed to the 60s-90 age group but it was slightly annoying in parts of the show. Overall, a great night out. I'd visit the Ogunquit Playhouse again no question. read more

My family and I saw Million Dollar Quartet last night - we were rockin' in our seats! The actor who portrayed Jerry Lee Lewis stole the show. The actors all played their own instruments and sang their own songs as they portrayed Cash, Perkins, Elvis, and Lewis. No dubbing here - unbelievable! Actually, very believable! The playhouse is wonderfully quaint and personal, the staff very kind and friendly. Summer theater at its best. We will be back for other shows. read more

We've seen quit a few productions at the playhouse. It's a tradition to see whatever is playing when we visit Ogunquit. We really enjoyed the Adam's Family. It was a very different type of Musical. The singing was great. We were at the Thursday October 2nd Matinee. During the first act the piano playing was way too loud. Everyone around us felt the singers especially Wednesday had to try to overcome the piano player. The second act was cute and different. Music was better. Last fall my wife and I caught, I believe, the last show of the Buddy Holly story. If I could capture that show in a time capsule to be retained forever I would. It is the best I ever saw, and the cast was so "right on" that it was incredible. Think superlatives. The quality of this theater has maintained its rich history for 80 years. The evidence is clear as to why. although I have been attending their shows for many years, and all but one excelled with talent, THIS show far surpassed all the others. which show?? BUDDY, the Buddy Holly story. The audience showed a multigenerational appeal and on a Sunday afternoon the cast earned a standing ovation before the show ended!! Whatever they are showing, go see it! I am serious. We have seen "The Drowsy Chaperone" and "South Pacific" in 2011 and 2012. The actors and the sets are almost as good as Broadway and some would say equal to. What I mean by the latter is that I saw "The Drowsy Chaperone" three times on Broadway and once here. While there were two parts that I thought were much better cast and played on Broadway, if the only time you had seen "The Drowsy Chaperone" was in Ogunquit you really would not have missed anything. A mixed review on this experience. While the theater was great and the show (Ballroom with a Twist) was wonderful, the BIG draw for me was that 3 Dancing With the Stars pros were going to be featured. If you consider a total of 3 dances/10 minutes on stage performing as "featured", than promised fulfilled. The truth was that the backup crew-12 really talented dancers-carried the whole dancing part of the show and while they were wonderful, they were NOT the advertised pro's from the TV show. The two singers (from American Idol) were a pleasant and very good surprise. Overall, the show was great...just not as advertised or for the price of the tickets paid. read more

I feel the need to write this follow up to my recent review, one in which I took issue with the handicapped procedures at the Playhouse. The Facilities Manager did, indeed, call me today (took too long, but he did call). We had a productive conversation and he listened to my concerns. He also promised to follow up with his staff and then get back to me. While I wish that my Dad had been able to have a better experience, I am heartened by their follow up. read more

Visited Ogunquit and the Playhouse over the weekend. The playhouse's seats unfortunately are not comfortable and one feels packed in. A previous reviewer said "high school gym type seating". The airlines would be proud to have these seats compared to what they offer. If one pays a price for a ticket to a 2 1/2 hour show, more comfortable seats would be appreciated. My opinion is that they should be 1/3 wider and the distance between seats should be 1/3 more distance. It is obvious that the theater tries to fit as many uncomfortable patrons in as possible. My opinion also is that there needs to be a full person wide aisle on the left and right walls so that patrons can easily exit if the need arises in an emergency or after the show. Now those aisles are a thin, person-shuffle-slide-by-width. To be an elegant, respected theater, I would suggest all seats be removed and new comfortable larger seats be installed with 20% less seating. Charge more. It would be worth it. Thank you. read more

My husband I recently saw the Rat Pack at the Ogunquit Playhouse. It was not well done. "Sammy Davis Jr." should watch his namesake's films and practice a lot! Dean Martin was pretty good, passable. THis is not about the evening shows but merely the kids matinees. I attended a showing of the Jungle Book. The show is run by a camp that they charge each child $500 a week for and than charge $13.00 a ticket. I showed up and was immediately asked to donate more money as the fees do not cover the cost of the show. I had driven from Connecticut to see my nephew and was expecting greatness. What I got was a group of amazingly talented children. The kids were great, what I was disgusted about was the lack of sets, costumes (no lie the snake and elephant were made from things I could get at the hardware section of Walmart). There were no mic's, nobody heard what was being said and the intermission was longer than the show. I have been to evening performances and they were great, but please save your money and take your kids to the local high school show in the fall. as this was atrocious read more
