The Ohlone Greenway is listed in El Cerrito, but it actually stretches from Berkeley to Richmond!! It says that the Ohlone Greenway starts at Ohlone Park in Berkeley, but I first discovered it walking from Strawberry Creek Park to Cedar Rose Park in Berkeley. You don't get the walking under the Bart track experience in Berkeley until you get past Gilman Street. The path is 4.5 miles long, and yes, you have to stop at every block to cross the streets. I've seen people biking, running, and walking on this path, or trail if you want to call it that! Walking under the Bart track is a pretty cool experience, and is no doubt the highlight of this path!! read more

** The following review reflects my experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** I have a need to call this the I-Want-to-Be-Aloney Greenway because Native American history aside, I get the sense that a lot of people walk here in solitude since it doesn't require a tag team or a scouting party to navigate the fully paved path. For the most part, it follows the Richmond BART line of which you are constantly reminded since they whorl by with beeping horns overhead. The 4-1/2-mile route aligns with the historic railroad right-of-ways in the area. There's really no reference to this backstory in the signage. What you will notice is the number of times you have to cross streets. Most are uneventful with drivers mindful of the vulnerable pedestrians crossing, but I noticed there were an inordinate number of jerk drivers who barrel through at busier streets like Moeser Lane in El Cerrito despite the presence of blinking lights. The Ohlone pathway is a wonderful bike route that connects Berkeley with Richmond. It's a 4.5-mile paved pathway for both pedestrians and bicycles. From my location in South Berkeley, I like taking the bicycle route north on California St., then hopping on the pathway near North Berkeley Bart. It's a nice ride, not too busy, and close to plenty of shops and restaurants. It's a great way to avoid busy road traffic and safely navigate through the city. Don't forget to take advantage of this beautiful summer weather and get some exercise :) read more

My only complaint is that I wish it was longer. This is an amazing greenway that runs from downtown Berkeley up thru El Cerrito and ending on the El Cerrito/Richmond border. It's both for pedestrians and bikers and is pretty wide, paved area flanked by greenery on both sides. It runs alongside BART, thru parks, dog parks and neighborhoods and is just such an amazing part of these cities that I don't think a lot of people are aware of. My husband and I ride our bikes on the greenway I'd say pretty much every nice weekend as we're always out exploring on our bikes. This provides a peaceful and relaxing path worry free from cars. A definite gem I would love to see replicated elsewhere and expanded! read more

I remember riding through the Ohlone Greenway when I was just starting to learn how to unicycle and bike. It stretches through Berkeley, Albany, and El Cerrito. There is also a dog park close to the greenway in Berkeley, and it is fun to watch the cute doggies play around. The greenway is a good option for cyclists and unicyclists who want to be safer from riding on the roads. I really miss riding through the Ohlone Greenway. read more

The greenway is such a brilliant idea. I can't think of a better way to use the space beneath the elevated BART rail. Instead of becoming a litter-blown, graffiti-pasted, no man's land like the areas around most tracks, the local communities have turned it into something that is not only verdant and sightly (for the most part), but something useful that promotes both good personal and planetary health. There are actually two separate trails, one for cyclists (two lanes) and one for pedestrians, that extend 5.3 miles from downtown Berkeley (@ Hearst and MLK) to just north of the El Cerrito Del Norte BART station (@ Conlon and San Pablo). Very cool. There are stop signs at every street crossing. Do not ignore them! read more

I have enjoyed my frequent walking along the Ohlone Greenway for a few years and it was a blessing to many during the pandemic shelter-in-place orders. However, I noticed last week a large tent erected on the west side of the park close to Fairmount street and EC plaza Bart. There's another tent and related tras/junk buildup in the creek under the Greenway in the Berkeley side, near corner with Santa Fe ave. I am concerned that this may be the start of a homeless encampment in the Greenway, which would deter many of us from coming in the future. I know the homeless problem must be solved with multiple strategies but giving up our public community parks is not the solution. read more

the best designed multi use bike path in california (yeah i said it!) great use of land taken by eminent domain. the sensor activated lights at the busy intersection help keep me safe without ruining my pedal flow. drivers who blow through them usually feel really bad and apologize profusely as they wiz past. this makes me feel like i live in amsterdam for 0.005 seconds. the wildflowers near Conlon during the Spring have brought so much joy to my family and elevate my walk to and from the BART station. I heart EC! i'm pretty sure the ohlone people would rather have their land over this trail HOWEVER i commend the city for taking what could be a neglected afterthought to the next level. read more

Awww, I love walking on this path when it is warm and breezy. Though BART trains pass by loudly every 10 minutes or so right above your head, it is never crowded so mostly very quiet. I bike here also. It is a good place to bike with little kids who are learning to ride. One of these days, I want to get up super early and walk this path and smell the autumn air! read more

I've used this trail to (partially) get to Richmond from Berkeley several times. Despite the long ride, it's beautiful and enjoyable. The air/wind, green, and quiet is enough to lift anyone's mood--even a cranky overworked student! I also love being on this trail and seeing groups of joggers, people walking their dogs, etc. All right, all right, I'm a sap; but don't kid yourself--you'd like that too! A great alternative to other transportation options...all you need is a bike. read more

Much of this trail is currently undergoing construction (Bart seismic renovations) so several entryways are fenced off, making my run a game of Follow the Orange Detour Signs. Thankfully, the signs were plentiful and there was a makeshift trail route alongside the road, with fencing separating runners from passing cars. The Berkeley part of the Greenway was enjoyable since it wound through neighborhood parks and gardens. Once it got to the Albany/El Cerrito region though, the route became exponentially sketchier. I was definitely nervous running through by my lonesome and spotted more than 1 shady, hooded stranger posted by nondescript bushes. I found the trail to be too full of cracks and uneven. There were also too many pedestrian crossings which make me nervous. I'd rather stay away from speeding automobiles while getting my run on. Overall, a nice change of scenery but I would never make this my main route. read more

used to be a lot nicer. its gotten kinda worn out and sometimes the wrong group of ppl hang around the trails but overall its okay. just make sure you're aware of your surroundings and be smart! dont go on the trail when its late and nobody is around! read more

Great urban/suburban trail. I live near the Del Norte station and I often walk this trail straight to the North Berkeley Bart station for exercise. It runs along the BART tracks and is not far from San Pablo Ave if I need to stop and get some water. Great local path for dog walking and exercising. read more
