Donating platelets and plasma - notice that I have them hide the needle (I hate needles, but still donate!)

I have been donating platelets and plasma at OBI for several years now. The facility also handles other donations types (whole blood, red cells, et). The facilities are very clean (currently they screen you at the door thanks to Covid), the staff is friendly/ easy to work with, and the chairs/loungers are comfortable. While donating they have TVs to capture your attention (though I bring my tablet and/or ereader), and when you are done they have snacks to help you recover. There is WiFi for all your electronics. OBI is a non-profit company, and you can rest easy knowing that your donations will help facilities here in OK.

You show up before your appointment (you can only check in 10 minutes in advance) and there is a line of 30 people still waiting to be screened for their appointment 45 minutes ago. A complete cattle-call. That's what it is. You're a cow lined up ready to be milked, except you will be stabbed with a needle twice and they're actually taking your BLOOD. While they're treating you like throw-away garbage.

I used to weigh 200 lb so I was paid $50 because they could take more blood, but then I lost weight so now I am only paid $45 but that's ok. Basically if you're big this gig is to your advantage. It's best to come in early so you don't have to wait long. The staff has almost always been competent and polite. Sometimes some have been grumpy. One time there was a complication and I started bleeding under my skin and my forearms became tingly and numb and I almost passed out. But I also was dizzy because I had wine the night before and you're not supposed to do that. They took good care of me after that though. Put my feet up, gave me ice packs and a Gatorade. Also one time right after I told an employee I'm musician and asked if she could maybe prick me at an angle that won't interfere with my practice sessions, she pricked me so hard I was bruised for days. So that was sweet. That was the same day I almost passed out. Basically the place looks shady but they do their job so you shouldn't worry about anything. I still like it better than Biolife, which I could never get scheduled into. It was a huge pain. CSL is much better for me and great if you're unemployed because you can come in the am on a work day and no one will be there.
