Going Downhill ATM I have been a long time customer here the last 20 years and my last visit was so disappointing. 6 of the 8 bread plates we received were dirty. 2 of the dinner dishes we were given had dried spicy mustard stick to them when neither dish involved spicy mustard. The outdoor tables need repair or replacement. They are getting so loose and wobbly any small movement from anyone at our table caused our drinks to slosh and spill, which then dropped through the tablecloth and onto my pants leg. My hubands chair had a metal backrest bar broken off with a sharp spike left that cut his finger when he went to sit down. They need a welder to maintenance these asap. And the food. I always go for plain Weiner Schnitzel. Always. So I do know what to expect plain wienerschnitzel to taste like. And usually it is so good that I tear up a little as I eat in pure bliss, and I keep eating till I hurt my gut and have to loosen my belt. This time is was just meh. It wasn't actively bad, it wasn't bad meat or fried in oil that had gone bad, but it had none of its normal flavor, just lacking in any flavor. Something key was missing but I couldn't tell you what it was, maybe the kitchen was so busy they forgot to season mine? Cause that's how it felt like to eat. And normally the crust does a pretty good job of staying with each bite but it wouldn't holding together at all. More like panko than what I know their schnitzel should be like. The cucumber salad and potatoe salad were good. The red cabbage all exactly as I expected. But it just can't be a good review when your meat your main dish kind of gave the impression of cardboard. Pretend food. I didn't even want to eat the leftovers I brought home, we gave them to the dogs. I turned down trying three different brand new restaurants because I realized the store we were going to was close to ol Heidelberg, But I don't think I will choose it the next time we're on that side of town. Which is sad. I hope they fix their problems with the dishwashing staff and that the kitchen regains its consistency, and they find someone to patch up their tables out front. read more

Hands down one of my favorite restaurants in all of HuntsVegas!. Chicken schnitzel, cucumber salad, spatzle! Warm fresh German table bread! Great wine and gingham table cloths! Lederhosen! I came all the way from the Bay Area of California to visit my mother and her bestie for our traditional New Years Eve epic German dinner!! I was so excited! So please imagine our disdain to be turned away on New Years Eve because we did not have a reservation.... We have frequented this restaurant for over 20 years.... This was our tradition... No reservation has ever, ever been required with exception of a 30 minute call ahead request. The hostess was so rude waving her reservation list in our face as though we were idiots. "We've been taking reservations for daaaays!" she barked. What a cruel joke. A party of five proved to be too much to handle at 5:10 pm. What a shame. The honey pecan chicken was good! A bit sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. The potatoes were a good addition but not super flavorful. We had a wonderful waiter who served us. Loved the bread that was served at the table. All of our food was good, too. I was disappointed that there wasn't Bavarian pretzels, or apple strudel. I learned that their desserts aren't made in house, which is fine- but if you are looking for traditional German desserts for after dinner, you may look elsewhere. One of the dishes was a total disaster while the other dish of 'german' cuisine was mediocre at best. While the service was good the kitchen has lost its' past German food preparation skills. Long wait after ordering which was almost 45 minutes to be disappointed totally with our food...the dishes were not prepared by their past German kitchen staff obviously. Probably will not return again...the Manager asked me if I wanted to remove the charge for the disastrous dish and my answer was no as a Owner would have done so without asking... We had a wonderful experience there today. Great service and great food. They now have a VEGETARIAN section on the menu so I ordered the Mushroom schnitzel (It was delicious - breaded, pan fried & covered in cheese sauce) plus pan-fried potatoes (minus the bacon) and a side of delicious cucumber salad with a creamy white sauce. My husband had brown gravy covered Jaeger Schnitzel (chicken) plus potatoes. Delicious! We got German chocolate cake to go and that, unfortunately, was a bit disappointing as it tasted store bought vs. homemade. As we had just had lots of homemade cakes at Christmas, that made a difference. Well worth the price. Beautiful decor too. read more

So we got all three apps(We splurged baby) Escargot in garlic butter, a sausage sampler, and a portobello app. We got 2 different wines and a beer for my hubbie . Hubbie and I both got the Bavarian pork schnitzel . I got Spaetzle for my side and purple cabbage. The Spaetzle comes with gravy. My son got a humongous Reuben sandwich. He likes sandwiches what can I say. Everything was very tasty, the waiter was nice and everything came pretty fast We were there right as they opened 10:42 am . We got 3 different desserts - Red Velvet parfait, Apple pie for hubbie, snd a Raspberry Lemon drop parfait. We had to ask if they had desserts and what they had. It was not on the menu! Maybe it varies . They do have them in a case by the register All in all everything was Perfect and We all ate well and loved it! By the way this restaurant has been going for 52 years!! What?!! The food here is good but the portons are half the size of other German restaurant I have been to. The wait staff is quickie, fun and tries to make your meal enjoyable. The owner don't keep up the place the beer taps where broken and the restroom was in poor shape. When you go to German restaurant the first thing you want is a German Tap Beer. We brought our friends who were visiting from out of town, since they don't have access to German food in their area. We couldn't have had a better experience. We called ahead for a group of 11, and the staff was more than ready for us. They brought the bread out quickly, walked us through the menu to help us choose the best options, and took care of us the entire time. Every detail, from the food to the service, was excellent. My friend from Virginia was here visiting and she wanted to go to Ol' Heidelberg to eat cucumbers. Apparently the German restaurants in Virginia do not sell cucumbers in a ranch/sour cream sauce. We arrived at 5:00 which was a good time due to the restaurant being full. We were seated close to the door and were able to see a dozen people standing inside. There were two empty tables close to us but it appeared not enough wait staff for the empty tables. The young lady waiting on us was hustling and moving quickly during dinner service. Hubs ordered a Bavarian Schnitzel with crispy fried potatoes and a side salad. I ordered a Bavarian Schnitzel with crispy fried potatoes and a cup of vegetable beef soup. My friend ordered Wiener Schnitzel, cucumber salad and spaetzle. We had an order of sausages with brown bread and German mustard. The appetizer came out nice and hot. We each had a few bites of the sausages. Next our entrees arrived. My schnitzel and potatoes were not hot. My husband's schnitzel was warm and his potatoes were hot. My friends veal was warm and her spaetzle was hot. I think my order was cooked first and not put under a heat lamp. We did not complain or let the waitress know all of our foods weren't hot. She was busy and the restaurant was full with more people waiting to be seated. We will return again. The food at this restaurant is better than what we had. We went there for Father's Day because it's my husband's favorite. He had the assorted wiener plate with fried potatoes and cabbage. My daughter had a chicken platter. My son and I both had the chicken Cordon Bleu. We always make sure we save room for dessert and we were glad that we did. We got a rainbow cake which I had never seen before and a turtle cheesecake. Third time OUT! Mu husband and I went to Ol' Heidelberg before going on to a concert. We made reservations for 5 O'clock pm and we thought we would have plenty of time to make it to the Venue by 7pm. We had been to this restaurant twice before for lunch and while it was not what I would think of as "Traditional German food" it was a good try both times, although the portions were small. This was our first visit for dinner and it was a disaster. They were very busy, we expected that, the wait staff took our order at roughly 5:30 never to be seen again. Once my husband finally got her to come over at 6;30 to ask about our food she made out that our food had just come out. My husband's food was cold, not tepid, cold, and we could see the congealed "gravy" on our meat. My meat had been put in a microwave congealing the gravy even more and the potatoes were midline cold, definitely not hot! I went to the car while my husband took care of speaking with the manager, he is more diplomatic than I am. If it were possible I would give zero stars. We did get our money back but they lost what could have been a great customer in the future. read more

The dinner, although very reasonably priced and did travel well was overall disappointing. I'm sure the potatoes were good, they usually are here; however the pork loin was nearly inedible, void of seasoning and so. Very. Dry. I checked their website to see if they are offering a similar meal for Christmas this year so I could dissuade you from partaking. Their website did not have any Christmas pick-up meals listed. Ol' Heidelberg is fine. It's a local institution--around for more than 50 years--and it hasn't really changed much other than increased prices. If nostalgia is your thing, you'll be right at home here. Service is good, though I am amazed that they're still making the servers wear those ridiculous German costumes. Regardless, Heather was a delightful host to us--glasses were always refilled, she was very kind, etc. They try hard to make you feel at home. Things started going a bit downhill once we got to the food, however. First, yes you pay now for bread--$1/per person. It's not great, but it was fine. Second, though the food is fine you're likely going to want to ask for spicy mustard (I did) or a salt shaker. My pork schnitzel was well enough prepared, but I'm not used to fried foods being so bland. The hot potato salad was good, and they let me sub some (surprisingly overcooked and scorched in places) green beans for the various cabbage based options. Regardless, if you want a trip down memory lane you could do worse than stop in here. Practical notes: parking is in the shopping center, it's hit or miss. This place wasn't busy during lunch; I think dinner is far more crowded. Bathrooms could use some sprucing. read more

Unexpected, very good. Passing through Huntsville on the way to Chattanooga from Memphis, stopped to grab some rain gear from REI. I always look for German/Polish places when I have the chance; I was befuddled that...Huntsville!?!?...had a German joint. I can only surmise that Werner Von Braun and some of his colleagues made it a stipulation that there be a respectable place that served native food before setting up shop at the JPL. And that's the origin story I've made up... As for the food. Dad had a Reuben. It was a Reuben; it was very good though nothing life changing. Portion was respectable for the price. Good portion, side dish of red cabbage was sweet, vinegary, hearty in the acidic realm. I had the Rauchwurst and Knackwurst. Not sure if they were made on site or procured elsewhere, but both very good (and, for unexpectedly found in Alabama, damned good). If passing through again, I'd be hard pressed to choose between the same or to venture and get the bratwurst and polish sausages. The waitress was delightful, despite the campy, er, traditional dress. Southern charm meets hausfrau was a strange, but not unwelcome, combo. All in all, better than average food (gold standard is Polonia in Hamtramck, Michigan; but that's a Bourdain find and was featured on No Reservations, rendering it, and their sausage offerings and world's best sauerkraut life alteringly good), great service, welcoming environs; highly recommended. read more

Definitely enjoyed my experience here. I arrived on a weekday after lunch hours and it was very calm and quiet. I chose the Black Forest Ham Sandwich with Euro Slaw. Both were perfect lunch choices. I ordered the sandwich hot. My server "Becky" was awesome. She was also very attentive and kind. She explained patiently what the different desserts at the case were. The best German cuisine and atmosphere that Huntsville has to offer. This place has been a staple since long before I moved to town decades ago. It never disappoints! An early Tuesday dinner with my wife was pleasant. No wait, an atmosphere that is true to expectation, excellent service, and my Weiner Schnitzel with boiled potatoes, greens, and house Ranch was fabulous as always. Almost just like Germany (I've been there a lot). The biggest difference...the beer, of course, and the lack of nearby castles to tour. You'll have to settle with the beer menu they have (not bad) and the pictures of castles on the wall. Ol' Heidelberg is well worth the visit. Five stars for what it is. I almost took one star away because they were a little stingy with that house made ranch dressing, but they made that right with a minor mention. I took my employees here for Christmas lunch before the holiday. I had called the restaurant in advance to see if they took reservations and they do not. They told me I could call an hour ahead to have my name added to the list. But come to find out they don't hold tables, so she said your name just goes before people who just walked in. We came at 1130, so there wasn't a wait yet.! We were seated and I quickly noticed all of the quaint decor. The lighting is very low, which I appreciate sometimes. I ordered the Bavarian schnitzel with the cucumber salad and German potato salad. The schnitzel was tiny. About half the size it should be for a German schnitzel. Saving grace was the flavor was good. The German potato salad was lovely. The cucumber salad was a little bland. Pricing was confusing. On the menu we record all the schnitzels were $20 and up. The food is great but it's made to order, so that takes time. They give you some complimentary hot bread and butter. It's dimly lit, so the pictures don't do justice.
