The best ice cream in the Birmingham, Alabama area has opened a location up in Huntsville, Alabama. I have been to both locations in the Birmingham, Alabama area (the locations are in Avondale and Honewood) and this is one of my favorite ice cream stores (if not my very favorite). Not only do they make their own ice cream, but they make all their own toppings (with the exception of sprinkles). Their whipped cream is amazing. The service here was amazing and the ambiance is bright and cheerful. Big Spoon Creamery is amazing and I would definitely recommend a trip to this location or either one down in Birmingham. Visited on a Sunday evening around 7 PM. There were a few people inside and out, and ice cream looked good. Unfortunately, I found it to be too frozen and hard, and I had a few ice chunks in my peach. That really impacted the flavor, and I ended up only eating half. One nice option with the offer of "half scoops," which are kid size scoops instead of full-size scoops. Service was friendly, and the establishment is bright and inviting. read more

Went last night after GNO, even though it was freezing outside their Instagram keeps me posted on their rotating flavors and I HAD to try the oatmeal chocolate chip. They let you try any flavor (I tried multiple) and they rotate flavors in and out so there's always something new to to try - seasonal variations as well. I provided a picture of yesterdays flavor menu. I enjoyed a kids cup on the Oatmeal Chocolate chip with chunks of cookie dough - amazing. However, my all time favorite flavour of the night was the passion fruit chiffon cake. Holy S***!! It was so good I got a pint ($12). They sell by the pint in a mini fridge in house. We stopped by for a light dinner since we were still full from a late lunch, and it turned out to be a great choice. My daughter ordered the Little Spoon Sundae, and I went with two scoops--one cobbler and one blueberry (I think!). Both flavors were amazing. I've never had ice cream with those kinds of mix-ins before, and they were blended perfectly. My daughter's sundae was huge--definitely more than she could finish. It came loaded with toppings, and they were happy to swap out the coffee-flavored whipped cream for regular, which we really appreciated. This is exactly what Huntsville needed!!! We finally made it downtown to try this place on National Ice Cream Day. Made up day, but whatever... I don't need much of an excuse to get ice cream. It smelled absolutely amazing when I walked in because they made their waffle cones. I opted to try their goat cheese bramble berry pie ice cream and the magic city. Loved the friendly staff willing to go out of their way to find you "your" flavor. The selection wasn't huge (maybe 10-12 varieties) but the ice cream was quite tasty. All that said, the serving size wasn't huge and we paid approximately $5 per scoop + a $1 topping. There isn't much ambience but it was clean. We probably won't be back because of the cost. Addendum: the business owner just responded to my review and that goes a long way with me, especially now that I know more about how the ingredients are sourced and made. When I tell you I have been WAITING for this place to open... I've had my eye on Big Spoon's first two locations in the Birmingham area for a couple years but never had a chance to visit either. I was elated when I saw the announcement they were coming to Huntsville. They've finally opened downtown, right next to Melt in the old Cookie Dough Magic location, across the street from Moe's BBQ, The Standard, Stella's, and La Esquina. I was able to stop in Wednesday evening to try a scoop. The inside is bright and pretty and modern though some of the walls feel a tiny bit bare still. I imagine it'll fill out more as time goes on -- they only just recently opened. There are about 12 different flavors to choose from, and dairy free/allergen free flavors are available. You can also order sundaes or sammies, which are jazzier ice cream sandwiches. There's also a freezer with ready made pints for purchase to take home. They had about three young staff members ready to serve the moderately large crowd. The line moved quickly and when I met the servers, they were polite and working efficiently. When I placed my order, one of the girls asked me if I wanted a kids' scoop, single, double, etc. I wound up with a single but it's nice to know they'll serve grown ups a kid's scoop since it's a smaller portion and not as expensive. :) I ordered the coffee and cookies because coffee tends to be my favorite ice cream flavor. And I'm gonna be honest...it was just okay. A lot of anticipation only to be a little let down, truthfully. My biggest complaint is about the cookie aspect of the scoop. I greatly prefer larger chunks of cookie in any flavor of ice cream that includes them, and these cookie bits were ground to near dust and honestly just gave it a gritty texture. I noticed after the fact that they used gluten free cookies (as opposed to the non-gluten free cookies used in their cookies and cream) and I wonder if that's perhaps why it didn't hold up as well. As for the ice cream itself, it was decent: super strong coffee flavor to begin with, but it sorted of blended into a little too much sweetness as I kept eating. It wasn't bad ice cream by any means, but it wasn't a new favorite for me, either. However, I've heard wayyyy too much positive press to not wanna give this place another shot. I saw one reviewer talk about ordering a flight (3 smaller scoops) and I think that'll be my pick on my next visit, so I can try a bunch of different flavors and really get a feel for what I like. Sad the coffee flavor wasn't really for me, but very much looking forward to trying others in the near future! read more

This place is bomb! Great ice cream on par with Jenis. Nice and thick with some fun flavors! I got blueberry tiramisu which was the best of the 3 we got. It's a cute little spot with modern design - there is indoor and outdoor seating. The people are very nice and offered plenty of tastings. The sweet corn flavor was unique but well-balanced by the addition of the blackberry. The waffle cone was perfect. I ordered the Valrhona chocolate, ricotta fig, sour cherry cobbler, oatmeal chocolate chip, and the lemon elderflower sorbet. You could tell the ice cream was made in house and each scoop was huge! The bruleed bananas on the banana split were perfection. Nice crunchy crust. Foodies will definitely want to stop by. Jaylin was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, let us taste samples and made suggestions. The customer service was top notch. The bathrooms are clean and have nice changing stations for babies with extra wipes provided. They also have a kids size table in the dining area with a bookshelf of kids books. My son recently moved to Huntsville and has raved about this ice cream which is apparently home made and absolutely magic. He says the flavors are delicious and better than he has had in the city. Anyway, he calls me up having had a horrible no good very bad day and I wanted to cheer him up. So I thought I would try and cheer him by sending him one of those gorgeous ice cream sundaes he had told me about from Big Spoon Creamery. Unfortunately it was a random Tuesday and only the manager was working so there wasn't an extra person so even send on a delivery run. Also, they don't take payment over the phone. I was crestfallen but understood. It happens. But wait!! What does the manager Malina do? She gets a friend to deliver the ice cream and I did not even pay! What an awesome thing to do for an absolute random stranger. The South rocks! I have heard of Southern hospitality but this is beyond. You can better believe this is the only shop we will be eating ice cream at when in Huntsville.
