Been wanting to try Old 300 for awhile as my family (denoted as Walker on the wall) is part of Texas history. The Old Three Hundred was the 297 grantees, made up of families and some partnerships of unmarried men, who purchased 307 parcels of land from Stephen Fuller Austin and established a colony that encompassed an area that ran from the Gulf of Mexico on the south, to near present-day Jones Creek, Brazoria county Texas, Brenham in Washington County, Texas, Navasota in Grimes County, and La Grange in Fayette County. Moses Austin was the original empresario of the Old Three Hundred and was succeeded by his son, Stephen F. Austin, after his untimely death (wikipedia). While my mom can tell you all about the ol' family tree; I'm here to tell you about the BBQ! On a recent Friday, I drove over from Driftwood to Wimberley to pick up a buddy. Some nice back roads in my bright yellow convertible headed towards the square in Blanco, Texas. First impressions of the restaurant space upon arrival is rustic with an emphasis on re-purposing old for modern use. Cool beer coolers line the entry way heading towards the counter. Galvanized tubs as sinks in the restrooms complete with river rocks in the bottom. They also boast the six flags that Texas (Spain, France Mexico, Republic of Texas, United States, and the Confederate States of America) has flown on the wall. So far this place has provided a unique history lesson; let's see if they can cook! I thought Salt Lick's Turkey Sandwich was the biggest I would ever eat in a BBQ setting. Move over SL; now there is something meatier! The self proclaimed "cure for the munchies" Willie Nelson was near ALL the meats on a beautifully toasted hoagie roll. Start with a 1/2 lb of Angus brisket sliced to my specs. Add in a 1/3 lb of delicious pork loin with the perfect amount of smoke. If that wasn't enough its topped with 1/4 lb of sliced sausage! They weren't joking about the suggested to-go box that's in the menu description. I sampled a few bites of each meat along with the bun and called it. Buddy and I shared some fried okra as our side with stellar results as well. Both sauce options are decent; marinated onions left over from previous tenant Riley's along with two different pickles to choose from. We ended our meal with some banana pudding. Who knew Shiner Bock goes great with dessert! For Blanco, this restaurant is miles above the norm. Some additional advice on local dining scene; I highly recommend Chess Club for breakfast. Second would be the Bowling Alley for your traditional "greasy spoon" type place where the local liars club meets every morning. Lunch and dinner I have to give to Old 300. This is a real good BBQ spot, particularly if you appreciate TEXAS style bbq! The hoagie sandwiches are big and can be shared. Sides are good especially the cole slaw but not the beans. read more

Stopped here with a tour group traveling between San Antonio and Austin. Amazing BBQ, especially the brisket and ribs but truly awful sides. The green beans and baked beans were almost inedible, coleslaw was average as was the service. Small containers for the sauces would have been helpful but the server wasn't able to make it happen. Cornbread, maybe not standard, would have been welcome in place of white bread. The peach dessert was tasty and a nice finish. Come for the BBQ, the IH pickup and pink flamingos in front, leave the rest behind... overall, could have been better. read more

The line was just starting to form when we arrived on a Saturday around 1130 but was out the door by the time we left. Ordered brisket sandwiches that seemed pricey but when we received our order we understood why. Half pound of delicious brisket (we ordered lean) on a super fresh long roll, tasted great and the sandwich was so big we had to save half for later! Tasty deviled eggs were the only side we ordered but we will be going back to try the other menu items. Thumbs up! read more

Where there is smoke, there is Old 300! At least until they run out! First time we stopped by, they were sold out - made sure to get there earlier this time. Many meat options to choose from- we got the 1/2 lb of Angus brisket, 1/2 link of jalapeno sausage, cream corn and fries okra. Bread, pickles, marinated onions all complimentary. Took a drive up to Blanco to San Antonio to try this BBQ. When we showed up there was a line out the door and it looked like every seat full. By the tie we ordered and sat, there were plenty of seats. The line went fast and fast enough for me to decide what I wanted. I got the pork loin and the BBQ stuffed baked potato. The port loin was good, but I had a taste of my friend's brisket and that was amazing. The potato was HUGE and came with all the fixings. The only thing is I thought it would have been already stuff, almost like a twice baked potato, but it was also very good. The price seemed a little high, but I made 3 meals out of it so it was worth it. The staff was also friendly and helpful. read more

2.5 STARS! This was a travesty. Service was ok but the food was the worst. I ordered both lean and regular brisket. The lean was rather dry and the regular brisket was so fatty and chewy. Nothing ever feel apart, nothing melted in your mouth. The meat actually had to be pulled with force. It lacked flavor throughout. Sad to say, my mom cooks a better brisket. Truth. The worst part was the RIBS. Nothing, absolutely nothing fell off the bone. Every piece of meat had to be chewed off. I've had better ribs at chain restaurants and that's just not acceptable if you own a mom and pop bbq joint. The mac-n-cheese should be called mac-n-creme. Their take on mac is a sour creme based recipe that we didn't enjoy. The flavor was bland, no salt whatsoever. It's served cold which is just crazy to me. No flavor can pop served cold. The turkey was good. I won't complain about that. And to close it out I had to try some desserts. The banana pudding was good. The peach cobbler was good but the ice cream was freezer burned. And it was French Vanilla which is a slap in the face to any good Ole boy. Gotta have that creamy homemade vanilla ice cream. Bluebell. Based on the studded reviews I'm not sure what happened this day. I can understand one bad brisket cut but both? And then the ribs too? Geez. If you are passing through Blanco, TX on your way through The Hill Country be sure to stop here for some yummy BBQ. We ate tender brisket slices, while I noticed a platter of pork ribs on the next table that I would have snatched away, given the chance. The sides were all solid BBQ backups and I have a new passion for their pickled onions in the condiment bar. We'll be back again for sure. read more

Old 300 bbq was spot on today and doesn't disappoint; we had the sandwiches today and they hit the spot. The atmosphere as always was great. Today, however, the service was not the best. The little old troll of a cashier (older short chunky lady) decided today was the day she would audition for a job at Dick's Last Resort by being disrespectful to a customer, when I called her out on it she tried to justify it by saying she likes to have "fun" with customers. I found her comments to be out of line and completely disrespectful. This is not a condemnation of all the staff just this cashier. Hopefully, she will learn from the interaction today and if she decides in the future to "have fun" with a paying customer maybe she should reserve for those customers that she personally knows. read more

Always worth the trip. I like to take 281 to SA rather than I35 and this place is one of the reasons why. Consistently good BBQ. Brisket is moist and flavorful with a nice smoke ring and taste. Was driving thru Blanco on our way to Utopiafest in Burnet TX. Decided to stop here, since I wasn't able to try it during our trip to Blanco in the summer. I got the El jefe - a half pound of Angus brisket with a quarter pound jalapeño sausage on a Hoagie roll while my son got the brisket sandwich. Liked how they made the sandwiches on the hoagie roll. It was huge and I only ate half on the drive up and the second half the next day. We also got the creamed corn that was enough for 3-4 servings. Liked the atmosphere inside and the service was quick and polite. Will definitely go back when in Blanco again, maybe see some music next time. read more

We were recommended this restaurant by the Airbnb owner. Great selection of beers and good tea. We decided to try the Thursday special of brisket tacos. We got two tacos with a side of green beans and another of coleslaw. The coleslaw was a great addition to the tacos because they were pretty skimpy. Needed a crunch w all the soft. The brisket was nice and flavorful, good. The green beans were good, strewed and flavorful. My husband was still hungry and went back in for more. He arrived with a tray of sausage, pork ribs and turkey. The sausage was hands down the winner, lots of German influence in this area. The turkey was good, but we have had better. The pork ribs were terrible, tough and over salted/rubbed. Service was good, attentive nice staff. Wish I could Old 300 3 1/2 stars. read more

My husband and I likely would never have stopped in the lovely historic town of Blanco without your suggestion. While eating my dinner, I thought this review was going to be all about the brisket. I will say that it was tender, well-smoked and delicious. Although two sauces (hot and sweet) are available, none are required. We got two sides - creamed corn and fried okra. Both yummy. However, the unexpected star of the meal was dessert. Oh my. We got the pecan cobbler. Bring your sweet tooth. It is like having pecan pie that without all of the needless crust. Words can't do this justice. Oooey, gooey, crumbly, melt in your mouth goodness. Staff and so nice is helpful with the menu. I love this place so much. read more

I really like BBQ so we had to try this place. They keep your drinks on ice so they are nice and chilly for you. I ordered the chopped BBQ sandwich with a side of fried okra. My husband got the sliced turkey and brisket. We also got an order of the deviled eggs. I loved the eggs because I love eggs. Sometimes you get deviled eggs without flavor, but these were great. I didn't care for my chopped BBQ sandwich and hoped it was more like a pulled pork but it wasn't. Too much of one thing I guess. The sliced turkey and brisket were very flavorful and moist. We had business in Dripping Springs and got hungry on the way back home to San Antonio, so our noses led us to the Old 300 BBQ. Soooo glad we stopped! Let me preface this statement by saying that we were hungry, but not nearly hungry enough to finish our meals. When they delivered our meals, our jaws hit the floor when we saw the size of our sandwiches! I ordered the "El Jefe," a combination of slow smoked brisket and jalapeño sausage, and hubby had the "Chuck Norris," a combination of smoked pork loin and jalapeño sausage. Both sandwiches were piled high with sliced meat and a full half link of sausage...far more than one person can comfortably eat. The meats were tender, juicy, and had just the right amount of smoke flavor to let you know they knew what they were doing. But the meat wasn't the only star of the show. We also ordered a pint of coleslaw to split, but neither of us were too fond of the nearly flavorless poppyseed slaw. Devoid of vinegar, sugar, horseradish, or other standard coleslaw flavorings, the prominent flavor was cabbage and poppy seeds. If you're a fan of the little black seeds that get stuck in your front teeth when you smile, then you'll love this slaw; else, we'd recommend giving another one of their sides a try. Of course there were the standard pickles and onions, but they served up fresh, refrigerator dills (think Clausen) alongside the standard pickles you find at most BBQ joints. They also had fresh red onions AND pickled onions to top your smokey goodness. We had our choice of a sweet BBQ sauce and a spicy BBQ sauce. Not sure if they mixed up the signs, but the dark sauce (labeled as "sweet") was not as sweet as the lighter sauce, and it was more spicy. Whatever we wound up having, we both agreed the darker sauce was much better! All in all, this place offers some darn good eats for carnivores. Next time we're in Blanco, this place will have our business again. read more

Seemed like a good place to eat based on reviews. Sliced brisket was too lean and therefore pretty dry, at least to my taste. Jalapeño was extra charge. Never been to a bbq place in Texas that charged for jalapeños. Sorry folks drive 30 minutes to Austin to eat bbq. The cole slaw was actually the worst. We took one bite and left it on the table. Well! Amazing! The chicken sandwich is so good! The seasoning is amazing. Pair with the fact that it's smoked and you have chicken perfection. The smoked wing is like getting an extra side! Mac& cheese is one of the best I've had. Coleslaw is awesome. I add a touch of the spicy bbq sauce to mine. Yum! The brisket, turkey and all of the sausages are beyond good.
