I don't live anywhere near Sisterdale and don't go there often, and I just happened to notice this barbecue joint on a ride home. It was Father's Day, getting close to 2 p.m., there was a line, and they had already sold out of most of the mains except for the prime brisket. I got a pound of it (moist) to go and a side of jalapeno slaw, along with cups of pickle slices, jalapenos and sauce and some bread. It's legit Texas barbecue with a nod or two to creative variations. The brisket wasn't overly fatty, but juicy and flavorful. The pickles and slaw were top notch. I'd definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area.

This is definitely one of the best BBQ places in The Hill Country. Amazing brisket, incredible quail lollipops, great sides and they cook in tallow. They have amazing service as well!

This place is absolutely amazing in every way! We first stumbled upon it two years ago during a road trip to San Antonio, and I am so glad we did. The Black Board food was delicious, and the service was top-notch. Although there weren't many people there, the first impression was unforgettable. Just two weeks ago, my husband started craving that incredible BBQ we had discovered, and we found our way back. I wish there were more reviews about this gem because, two years later, the food is still phenomenal, and you don't have to wait hours to indulge. We don't even mind driving two hours just to savor such delightful Texas BBQ. It's worth every mile!

Awesome service! The Mac n cheese was out of this world, my husband and I had to get seconds. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was very flavorful, a bit greasy but delicious all the same. The ribs were not over powering on the sauce, and they were very moist! The lean brisket was a bit dry. Overall, would come again! Come hungry!

I reviewed Blackboard BBQ when it was owned by the previous management. It's time to refresh the review now that Melissa and Joe are in charge. This is their life. They live on the property and have dedicated it all to great BBQ and sides. Honestly, Joe has improved his brisket and burnt ends since taking over. I now proclaim Blackboard BBQ to make my Top Ten List for Texas brisket. This is not a place you are going to bump into while visiting one of many quaint Hill Country towns. You have to know where Blackboard BBQ is located (Sisterdale) and be willing to navigate the back country roads to get here. It's worth the drive. We usually visit when we go to Fredericksburg to pick up wine at Augusta Vin. I'm always afraid they will be out of something I want if we get there too late. On this visit they still had brisket burnt ends. This was the first time we had them here. Smoky, tender, with a lot of great peppery bark. Incredible! The brisket on this trip was the best I've had here and it is now on my Top Ten in Texas list. It's moist, tender, smoky, and has a good bark. It's great with their peppery BBQ sauce, but is also great on it's own. I'll even eat the leftovers cold. It's that good! The garlic confit sausage is very bold and flavorful. Definitely a garlic lovers favorite. Never heard of it, but it's so tasty. For sides we had the hominy casserole and truffle fries. The casserole is good, but the fries steal the side show. Joe trims the fat from his briskets and then renders it and filters it. Then they fry it using the beef tallow. That's what made McDonalds fries so good before the food police pressured them to use tasteless seed oil. We were there on a quiet Sunday afternoon and had the opportunity to steal Melissa for a few minutes while we enjoyed everything. It was great to catch up with her and learn more about the couples background. Joe has a varied culinary journey including the Cypress Grille in Boerne and the Gage Hotel in Marathon. It looks like he learned the pitmaster chops at the Brick Vault Brewery & Barbecue in Marathon. Melissa runs the front of the house and has done a great job providing a great dining experience. They knocked down a wall and the place os really open with a nice view of the rafters. A country gem. Can I tell you a secret? On Thursdays, they don't sell BBQ. Instead they offer 1/2 lb of Fresh Ground Beef Brisket Burgers. Served up on a Garlic Tallow Toasted Bun with a side of fries in the evening. OMG, I wished I lived closer. Melissa tells us it is a locals night where she knows most of the families that show up. If you have not been to Black Board BBQ you need to get there now before they become as famous as Franklins or Snows and you are waiting for hours to get in.

Two words, absolutely incredible. Soon to be on the Texas 50 list. Get it now before the line is hours long. Burger Thursday is one of the best in the South. In fact the best burgers we've since Meers in OK circa 2008.

Saturday,we stopped at BlackBoard's after a short 3 hour tour of Fredericksburg. Boy o boy,we were hungry. We skipped lunch for our Blackboard 5:45 pm dinner. We ordered the Brisket Sandwich, with the Camp Beans, mouthwatering. We even met the owner's lovely wife. Today,Sunday,we stopped in for our "To-Go" lunch. We ordered the Pork Belly Burnt Ends, Jalapeno/Honey Dipped,BBQ'd Chicken, and the Brisket. Oh soooo Good! Arnold said it best ...,"I'll be bach!"

Food - 4.5 Stars Service - 5 Stars Atmosphere - 4 Stars A bit out of the way, but worth the trip. We stopped on our way home from Comfort, TX and we are happy we did. Nice BBQ restaurant with damn decent food. I had the brisket, pork ribs, and turkey, and my wife had the chopped beef sandwich. The brisket was the show stopper! The ribs were OK, but a little dry. They may have held them a little long. The Turkey was on point and I'm definitely glad I got some. The sides that we had were equally good, or better. I had the elote corn salad, and my wife had the truffle parmesan fries. The corn salad was the bomb, and the fries were pretty darn good. The portions were very generous. Watch for them on the Texas Monthly BBQ list as they definitely have the potential to make it on there if TM happens to go to Sisterdale to give them a try.

(((Long, honest & worth the read))) Hands down best BBQ we've had in Central Texas. We've had Opies BBQ in Spicewood which was probably our favorite until we came across Black Board. We've had 2M (San Antonio), Smoke (San Antonio), Blacks (New Braunfels), Pinkerton's (San Antonio), Blue Lacy (Castroville), Salt Lick (Driftwood), Coopers Old Time Pit (Austin), It's All Good (Spicewood), Two Bros (San Antonio), County Line (Austin), Barbcuties (San Antonio absolutely horrible, closed now). That's just from what I can remember of the top of my head. It's very seldom you find a BBQ restaurant that has both amazing BBQ and amazing sides. Black Board knocked it out of the park. This was our experience: Walking in the door we were immediately greeted with bright cheerful faces. While in line we were introduced to the days special which was a Chicken Fried Steak with 3 options of gravy (we chose the green chili cream gravy) & 2 sides...um, mashed potatoes yes please & fresh green beans. After finding a seat we were greeted a couple of times and they checked on our order and delivered when ready. It was worth the 15 minute wait. Chicken Fried Steak: Delicious! The breading is perfectly dipped, the steak is thicker than usual and not chewy like most. Gravy was on freaggin point bro! Oh my LAWD! Sorry, I'm a sucker for chicken fried steak. We then moved onto our platter of masculinity - the real reason we came. The moist brisket first of course visually inspecting (I mean, I'm judgy with my bbq bro step back) so tender, so juicy and seasoned to perfection it was a good sign, so I moved on in for the taste test. Mmmmm ohhh myyy gosshhhh...SORRY! I'll keep it age appropriate What's the saying the kids used a while back BUSSIN! Let's talk Burnt Ends...I'm a 50/50 fan because that's about as often as you'll find some home run, out of this world, award winning burnt ends...aaaaand for the Dub! They were amazing, seasoning, moist & just melt in your mouth. Jalapeño Cheese Sausage...no this isn't your average run of the mill, over smoked, heavy, dried out sausage...the ungodly amount of gigantic chunks of melted cheese and perfect ratio of jalapeños in this sausage will blow your mind. Seasoned to perfection you'll slap your mamma if she's with you and if she's not I highly recommend getting up and walking over to someone else's mamma and respectfully slapping her instead. Out of respect for the sausage chef of course. Chicken...this is such a sensitive subject for me guys, many bbq restaurants are moving away from chicken and it is very disappointing. When done right it's extremely profitable for the seller and delicious for the consumer...ME! Seasoning and cook was absolutely on point coupled with the perfect amount of smoke. BAM! (Sorry Emeril had to do it) Sides...normally the ugly redheaded stepchild of the bbq world...not at Black Board! The Hominy Casserole (wtf, I didn't even know this was a thing I'm still flippin blown away). Wow just wow, and the Mac n Cheese, pffffft - bruh Drop. And the Cole slaw, again not your average basic "B" - try a creamy, jalapeño Cole slaw. Like it should be because we're in the SOUTH! And last but not least...the one item that I've never witnessed anyone turn down no matter how full they were. Even if it meant digging deep to release that glare receiving belch, or maybe even excuse yourself to the restroom to make room in ways I'll refrain from to prevent your appetite being lost - Crème Brûlée. I mean...yes, the picture says it all. Just put your ear close to the picture and listen while it whispers sweet crunchy thoughts into your deep inner ear...uh huh, mesmerizing right! Man oh man, the perfect thickly fired sugar topping with perfectly sweetened layer of fluffy perfect custard that absolutely melts your soul...I had an out of body experience when it hit my tongue. Now if I haven't convinced you to try this place...I don't know who will. As a matter of fact, you should probably vacate the state...immediately. Otherwise - YES they're out in the middle of the sticks, yea they're only open Friday - Sunday with an occasional burger night Thursday...so call your secretary, clear your schedule for the weekend. Go on Saturday...trust me you're going to need all day Sunday to recover from the well earned Meat Sweats. But it's worth it I'm telling you! If you can't trust me...who can you trust! To the crew at Black Board - I worship the smoke that rolls from your pits, I enjoy your sausage and will likely send you subliminal messages about how much I love your meat. Hey, it's nothing personal, your meat is just unforgettable!...compliments to you all. Hands down, I'm impressed. We'll be back soon! So glad we found you...

I'd earmarked Old 300 as the place in Blanco, to go up against the others. We arrived on a Monday about 1:20p. After lunch hour, and the place was packed. (that's an indicator right there. One of the slowest days for restaurants during the week, and not at peak meal time.) The line went quick. They have what's listed as a "BBQ Sandwich" - it's a blend of chopped brisket and chopped pulled pork (not in long, stringy strands) together. We were going to hit other towns & sandwiches, so for the two of us we just ordered one sandwich and a side of potato salad. We got it to-go. Sat at an empty table. Got ourselves fixins - some doctored up onions (sliced, seems like they sauté them a little in butter and then top w fresh cracked black pepper), pickles, and both their Sweet and their Spicy sauces. They brought it out quickly, less than 5 min. We opted to just eat it there instead of take it to the next town. We topped with pickles, onions, and the Sweet sauce. Oh my freakin' sweet Lord! In this small Texas town with an unassuming spot a block and a half off the main road going through town, easily one of the top 5 bbq sandwiches of all time - no joke! To break it down, we tasted all items individually. The onions are delectable - softened from the sauté, good moisture from the butter, delicious. The Sweet sauce is crazy good. A fantastic balance of sweet, tang, & slight bite. I've never said this before but it's true - told my daughter, "I could just sit here and dip these pickles in this sauce for the next 30 minutes and be completely satisfied." The sauce, yes, is that good. Daughter is not a heat/spice lover, but she did try the Spicy sauce and we both thought it was definitely tame as far as heat goes. We both thought the Spicy sauce was okay. The Sweet sauce, though, stellar! We were overwhelmed by how good it all was. When we got to the car, I said, "All the ingredients together was like a symphony." Next time I visit her, am absolutely gonna suggest another drive out to Blanco specifically, to try some other items on the menu. But I can say this, for the BBQ Sandwich, pickles, doctored onions, and Sweet sauce alone, Old 300 is worth a generous drive and you will 100 percent be happy as a lark. Thanks for fantastic meal, Old 300. Will most definitely be back.

We walked around on the grounds and noticed that there is a separate patio and a bathroom with seating outside. The women's bathroom was clean. Now to the restaurant. You could see the menu on the wall, the ordering counter was close, the food pickup counter was next to the ordering counter, the seating was in the middle, and the bar at the other end. After walking in and checking out the menu we walked up to the ordering counter. The person that took our order was friendly and patient with me. I wanted the El Burger that was listed on the menu but I didn't notice that it's only available on Wednesdays. The person told me that so I checked the menu out again to see what burger I wanted. I decided on LeRoy's Smash Burger which comes with smashed brisket patties, pickles, bacon & onion jam. I ordered mine without cheese. It came with a choice of a side so my husband and I picked the potato salad to share. I also wanted to try the Smoked Pork Belly Menudo which substitutes the traditional tripe meat with smoked pork belly. This came with onions, cilantro, and chopped jalapenos that you could add if you wanted. My husband and I decided to share LeRoy's Nachos which has tortilla chips covered in beans, queso, avacado, pico, crema, salsa, BBQ sauce and jalapenos. These come with your choice of meat and we decided on brisket. My husband ordered one taco to try called Chancho La Panza which comes with pork belly, beans, cilantro, and queso fresco. The Food. LeRoy's Smash Burger was delicious. I liked the flavor of the meat and the jam. The potato salad had a mustard flavor to it which I didn't mind. The Nachos were tasty. The BBQ sauce in them gave them a hint of sweetness in the midst of all of the saltier ingredients. The Menudo was spicy. I wasn't expecting it to be so hot but it was tolerable. The smoked pork belly mixed in the soup was good. There was also a crunchy texture mixed in that added to the experience. I tried my husband's pork taco and it was delightful. After finally going on a Friday night, I can…read moreconfidently say it was a complete waste of time--and one of the most frustrating dining experiences I've had in a long time. Let's start with the cashier. A high school-aged guy who couldn't have made it clearer that helping customers--especially disabled ones--was beneath him (I'm using my residual vision to see you, Mr. Curly Blond Boy). My friend and I are both visually impaired, so we asked a few simple, reasonable questions about the menu since we couldn't read the board. Instead of answering, he repeatedly pointed at it like that magically made it visible to us. We explained. We asked again. He still refused to actually help. This wasn't just bad service--it was an outright failure to provide even the most basic level of accessibility or human decency. Ordering turned into a ridiculous guessing game. Items were out, but instead of clearly communicating that, he made us drag the information out of him piece by piece. At one point, when we asked for mac and cheese and greens, he said, "We don't have that," and just... stopped. No clarification. No effort. We were left to guess which item he meant. That's not quirky or busy--that's lazy and dismissive. The food didn't come close to making up for it. The sausage and turkey were fine, though the sausage had jalapeño with zero warning--apparently transparency isn't a thing here. The brisket was so dry it was essentially inedible. The mac and cheese had decent flavor, but the pasta was cooked into complete mush and again the secret jalapeño zing was added. It's hard to overstate how unacceptable this experience was. When a business can't be bothered to answer basic questions or make even minimal accommodations for visually impaired customers, that's not just poor service--that's exclusionary. The place was not quirky, iconic, or appealing in any way. The decor was as generic as the food and service. It looks like they had a nice outdoor area, but we couldn't find a way out there to check it out. Apparently there was also a bar, but we didn't know it. We were given to cups to which we added water from the soda fountain. There are too many great BBQ spots out there to spend your time and money at one that treats accessibility like an inconvenience and customers like a burden. I won't be back.
