As luck would have it, I found an Indian grocery nearby at 151 Spruce Street, across from the hospital parking lot. It's Aapnar Bazar. And what a surprise. The store is bright and sparkling clean. It has many staples for Indian cooking, including curry leaves. Among other surprises there, I spotted some tiny masoor dal lentils and bought a bag. Yesterday I cooked up a batch based on a recipe from Raghavan Iyer's masterpiece, 600 Curries. The dish was delicious. Aapnar Bazar has lots of very fresh vegetables and quite a lot of good looking frozen fish. I was very impressed with the shop and have been recommending it to everyone interested in the best ingredients for home style Indian cuisine. Many items, particularly the vegetables, are suitable for any style cuisine.

Our venue wanted us to book with a few other "suggested vendors" for the cake. But we'd heard such wonderful things about Sweet Lisa's. So we decided to have a go and check them out. I hate fondant, and when relaying that to the baker, she laughed, and understood me immediately while simply saying, "It isn't for everyone I suppose." She was kind, understanding, and accommodating. We tried SEVERAL different forms of cake and filling, as Jess Vitti, the baker went over all of our options and possibilities. She was encouraging and always smiling. You can tell these people really love what they do. The variety of options was great, and we landed on a perfect choice for my wife and I. While they had some really exquisite options, my wife and I have simpler tastes, and Sweet Lisa's made us feel right at home no matter which way we were leaning. On the day of our wedding, Jess personally delivered and set up our PERFECT cake, then assembled the flowers in a burst pattern, or a semi-cascade... I forget... but it was so beautiful that it had our venue attendants gasping because they said they had never seen anything so beautiful. I don't think this store is a rip off, but I would have appreciated at least a token gesture to rectify the situation. I felt the man I spoke to on the phone could not care less that I wasted good money on something we couldn't eat. I'm not sure I'll bother to make the trip again.
