    Bacon wrapped tots
    Tia J.

This was our first time having dinner at Old Mill. We stopped in on a weekday when it was very quiet. There were only 3 other tables seated. Our server was friendly but didn't really seem to know much about the food being served. We asked a few questions about different items but didn't get much feedback. We went with an appetizer of bacon wrapped tots and dinners of a chicken fried steak and a BLT. The tots looked fried well but it was only on the surface. The bacon was raw in the middle and the tots were a little soggy. The chicken fried steak was ok. It wasn't fried long enough so the batter was undercooked. The fries and veggies were good. The BLT was good. Lots of bacon on it. The onion rings, again, weren't fried long enough so the batter was slightly raw on the inside. We left a lot of food on the plates because the raw batters, raw bacon and soggy tots just wasn't appetizing. Since it was just our first time having a full meal here we're not considering this spot a total dud. We'll likely be back to try some other options and I can update then.

    NOT a hoagie. Ew.

The food was very bland in general, chicken club sandwich said it would come on a hoagie but came on garlic bread. Chicken strips were not seasoned and neither were the fries! Service was very slow, seemed like the employees didn't care. The ambiance was miserable.

We had them in "The Country" so they were the best in that restaurant - because they had no competition. lol I always order food that I do not cook well so that meant getting the biscuits and gravy. Feeling piggy-ish, I also ordered a side of hash browns. If I'm going to be bad, I'm going to be real bad! It was a heart attack waiting to happen but too yummy!! When we walked in, no one was wearing masks - YAY! - but leave it to a "Karen" to ruin it for our server and insisting they put one on. Good grief! Enough of this craziness! "Karen" got to sit at her table and not wear one but bullied our server into wearing one. People like that need to just stay home and cook their own food. That said, we had a good time, other than sharing air with "Karen", our food was great and our server was on the ball and got everything perfect for the 7 of us. ANNNND... she let us have separate checks - which is a deal breaker for me. 1 check = total stress figuring out. Multiple checks = happy customer who will return.

Up until now, this breakfast has been my favorite all over the Western United States. The English muffins were barely toasted. The ham was thinly sliced "sandwich"ham, the hollandaise sauce was almost tasteless, but the topper was the basically "hard boiled"eggs on top! Expecting the usual poached eggs, but what I got was basically a hard boiled egg, no runny yolk no soft whites. Basically an undercooked hard-boiled egg. Maybe it was just an off day for the cook. Never again to compensate me for this abysmal meal they gave me free coffee.

My fiance planned a wonderful mountain getaway for us, and lucky for me- we had dinner reservations here. It was so chilly in December, We had a cold mountain day, and we bundled up to go to our dinner reservations and I have to say- I wasn't expecting much when I heard the name "Grill". I was thinking- burgers, fries, your typical post-ski grub. I was wrooong! We strolled into the coziest little restaurant and were greeted by the two lovely people working there. Felt like I very sweet family vibe. They steered us in the directions of the pasta dishes we ordered, and we had the Soup of the Day to start- I believe it was some kind of Tomato bisque and that hit the spot. The Hazelnut pasta was a hit for my fiance, and I loved that he got to try such a classic Oregon flavor in a pasta- how fun. My chanterelle ravioli filled me up so fast, I also loved being able to try chanterelles in this format. Both dishes felt very creative and full of so much Oregon pride! Delicious!

You can absolutely smell the fish and vinegar as soon as you walk through the door, which I think gives the place a very homey pub feel. I ordered a spiked peach Arnold Palmer, which I enjoyed (and it was pleasantly strong) and a glass of the house white, which was good for the price. Our server was very fast and attentive. To eat I got the tomato soup with a grilled cheese, which was absolutely fantastic. The soup was so creamy and flavorful, and I cannot imagine a better meal after spending all day walking outside in the rain. The fries were super crispy and I liked the batter. My partner and I shared some of their breadsticks, which were deliciously baked (fresh!) and came with a super refreshing basil crema and a nice tomato-y dip. Wonderful all. My partner ordered fish and chips, and was surprised to find that it is one large fillet of fish, not multiple pieces like you would typically expect. He said the fish was fine, but a little tough. Overall, a wonderful experience. I definitely hope to return. I highly recommend this place as a refuge during the cold winter months!

But the pizza! Off the charts!, FULL REVIEW of all Services: If anyone who enjoys hiking, river fishing, or just a general outdoor-focused vacation wants a good, simple getaway with their spouse/loved one, check out the Backwoods brand in Carson, Washington (just north-northeast of Bridge of the Gods/Cascades Locks). Backwoods Cabins offers a really great overnight stay option. The 8 cabins there are all basic "two-room" designs (bedroom and attached bathroom, and a living room / mini-kitchen room). The cabins sport king-sized beds, a gas fireplace and outdoor fire, a mini kitchen with refrigerator/freezer and microwave (no stove/range). I think 3 of the 8 cabins welcome dogs. The Backwoods brand also owns Backwoods Brewery, which is just across the road from the cabin property. They have great microbrew beers (from light lagers to GREAT stouts!). The brewery also has a smokehouse, with fantastic smoked brisket, pulled pork, and house-made sausage/brats. But even better, the Backwoods Brewery offers the BEST PIZZA I've had in decades. The pizza dough is a perfect balance of flavor and texture. It's not too thin and not too thick. The crust is chewy in the middle, with a great crusty edge and base. The red sauce (they also have a white sauce we didn't try) is thick and rich, with a few tomato chunks. It's got a slight spicy bite with a sweet finish. They also have some unique house pizzas. We tried the Whistle Punk - Red sauce, bacon, smoked brisket, peppadew peppers, sweet onions, fresh mozzarella rounds - and the Pepperoni Express - Red sauce, pepperoni, mushrooms, tomatoes, banana peppers, smoked mozzarella. Both were outstanding. I'd go so far as to say both Donna and I deemed these the best pizzas we've had in 35+ years (noting that our first date was at a pizza joint in Fife we both thought was the best-ever pizza). If you stay in the Backwoods Cabins, you get two coupons for free drinks at the brewery (beer/wine/cider/cocktails) as well as an assortment of snacks for your hiking adventures, and a full S'mores kit to use over the gas fire pit. And if you are in a dog-friendly cabin, you get complimentary treats, and water/food bowls for your canines.
