I had no idea what I walked into but I swear if a place sells genuine cowboy boots I find it. The Fort puts Boot Barn to shame (Sorry Boot Barn). If St. Joseph Boots has 17,000 pairs, I would say The Fort has about half. I've not visited St. Joseph boots, by the way. I smelled the leather when entering The Fort, and my nose immediately found the boots. Goodness, how can I choose just one? They have hundreds. Not just cowboy boots, but there's a pair with peace signs on them. While I was there, they had an ankle boot sale. I tried on a few pairs and left with a pair of Durangos...this was the first time in the store. The second time, I wanted to see if those ankle boots were still on sale. It pleased me cause they were...oh and the sandals with silver beads were on sale. I'm not normally much of a shoe person, either. They have boot services too, stretching and other services. I absolutely can not stand country music, but you'd never know it by my love for cowboy boots. Did I mention the size of The Fort? It's huge. All I'm saying is, Go there.

Not being from St Joseph it was very difficult to access this store, but boy we were happy that we had finally arrived at a place that wanted our business. We were greeted with a friendly hello and my son and I made our way over to the boots. He found several pair that he liked and was settling on a pair of ariats or durangos. He was unsure, until a clerk came over and gave her expert advice and then also advised him that he would get a military discount on them as well. Because they were so willing to help us, unlike the other large Boot company in town, we were able to make our purchase and leave feeling great about the new boots. In a time when customer service is Paramount, the Fort has it down pat

Keith and Team were presented with an impossible challenge, and rose to it. Late the week of 1/20…read moremy son, the Marine, lost his great grandmother. By serendipity, he was on home on leave during her passing, and agreed, when asked, by his grandfather, the Airforce Vet, to cancel his plans, drive 8 hours, and be present and uniformed at the funeral. Great Grandma married an Army Air Corpsman after a whirlwind romance in 1942. She would have been quite impressed by the uniform. After all, she kept the last one over 50 years. In packing on Sunday night for a Tuesday morning funeral, our Marine became aware that his SIZE 14 patent leather shoes had not made the trip with his blues. Because Grandpa was so appreciative of his presence, that he assigned him pall bearer duties, ONLY the dress blues were appropriate for the event. I began first thing Monday morning calling any store in the KC area that had a sliver of a chance of fixing this problem in 24 hours or less. Keith and his staff answered their phone - no phone tree. They knew their inventory, their rental and sales abilities, and they jumped into action. When I arrived at 0930 the next morning, they had a plan A, a Plan B, and epic customer service and attention. I have blanked out the Marine's face as it was taken after the funeral. After fulfilling his duties at Mt Washington Cemetery, uphill, during a week with a rather lot of moisture, his shoes are no longer in regs... but they certainly completed the mission.

I enjoy hitting this store each week, but there have been a few changes lately that are quite…read morefrankly making me shake my head. In the last 6 months they removed the best feature in the store, the unsorted shopping carts in the back. It was nice to get to hunt through a few carts, like a real treasure hunt. No more. Gone. Those were the best bargains, and I'd spend over $50-60 easily each week. Since the carts ended, they've been making the store more like a boutique, and I'm not convinced it's a good idea. This seems to be the trend for these thrift stores, perhaps it's to get more money from the donated goods, but they are pricing out a lot of their customers in my opinion. There are still bargains, but it's less and less common to come across lately.. Overpriced items sit for months in the showcase, and they never apply the color tag discounts to items in that case. I've seen the same 4 gaudy german hiking medals at $10 each (they were $15 for a long time) relegated to the bottom of the case, in a heap, on some sort of overpriced little china plate. Overpriced items sit, until they do a large sale (like 50% off white tags) once every few months, or they get repriced and moved around the store. I saw a $1.99 Star Trek game sitting by the toys, I came back 2 days later, it was in the showcase and priced at $19.99 - it was worth $10 on eBay once upon a time, and that was 4-5 years and 3 computer generations later. Someone needs to clue the staff in to how to price things, and not just look on eBay for the latest asking price. If you want to price donated goods at the eBay asking price, you're asking for a lot of your customers to head to City Thrift, Red Racks, or Goodwill. Also, it's been a year. Please pave your parking lot. There are potholes 4 ft x 4 ft wide just inside the entrance on Lamar. It's getting ridiculous. Update: They re-paved the lot and put some 25c bins in the back, an improvement!

The store itself is very grubby, and the inventory is disorganized and hard to shop. There are many clothing categories that are not organized by size. The shoes aren't organized by size or color. They do seem to have a lot of inventory, though. If only it were easier to look through. I wasn't able to get into my thrifting groove and left within 30 minutes without trying anything on.
