A very good burger advertised as locally sourced meat - that's all great - but it comes topped with American "cheese" which downgrades the food quality enough that I can't give them five stars, Please, even if the locally sourced cheese is nothing other than the Kirkland signature cheddar from the Helena Costco, it will be a better burger. We've had other people mention the same thing to us. Put cheddar on it, or even Co-Jack and you've got my favorite burger in town, hands down. Staff were all very friendly. The fried potatoes needed a bit of salt, but they were an interesting variation on the more typical fries. read more

Great burgers ... but I wouldn't recommend it to go. There bun was super soggy after my 10-minute drive back to my hotel (like it had been dipped in water). But I could tell if the bun was in good shape it would have been a much better burger. Potatoes area nice change from a french fry. IMO, definitely needed dipping sauce ... the burger sauce was a good choice (similar to fry sauce for those familiar with that Utah/Idaho staple). read more

The concept is great, a small restaurant serving local meat in the form of burgers and chili. I tried the chili with the salad. The chili was too hot and tasteless because of the heat. I didn't care for the salad, too many big chunks of root vegetables that I couldn't cut with compostable plastic tools provided. My hope is that the owners read the comments/reviews and use them to improve. It is a great idea, but IMHO it needs further refinement. Perhaps if I had tried the burgers and fries I could write a better review. Others in the bar seemed to be enjoying their meals. read more

I saw the 4.5 average rating and was excited to try this place. Unfortunately I did not get a 4.5 star burger. I ordered the double. Both patties were burned to a crisp. I ordered it with sauce on the side. It came with sauce on it and more on the side. Apparently there was a general lack of attention to detail on the night I visited; the table next to us had to send a burger back, as it was not made correctly. There are no fries on the menu, but they do have fried potato chunks that are pretty good. Prices seem high for what you get. $5 for a small order of potatoes. Like BBQ sauce with your burger? Came on an early Sunday evening. No line. Fast, friendly service. Great burger cooked as I like it. Two small things: forgot to ask to get the cheese taken off the burger and it came with American. Also the fries are different odd shapes. Not sure how they are prepared prior to frying to get it that way. But they taste great! And you get four choices of dipping sauces! I went with ranch and theirs is an herb-intense recipe that tastes great and lighter than regular ranch. All in all, great. read more

The one positive is the counter girl was friendly. 17 dollars for a bad chili burger and some chunks of fried potato is out of line. Especially when the chili is so so at best. Pickles on a chili burger? No thanks. No mention of that on the menu description so I didn't even have the chance to tell them to leave them off. First, I love the concept that the Old Salt Outpost operates on! Local ranchers co-op, local beef, quality food! All the good stuff....portion size, service, nice atmosphere, business model, horseradish mayo, beef fried potatoes cooking method, self-serve water station! Really liked having the full bar right next to Old Salt Outpost and it probably makes it easier for them not to have to worry about serving drinks. With that said there were a couple problems, some of them admittedly personal preference. The beef fried potatoes were very salty, to the point my wife could not finish her portion. The smokey BBQ sauce had no flavor, just bland. The burgers needed the cheese or they would be dry, but that's coming from a WI guy who loved "butter burgers". There is no option for "hamburger" on the menu but I'm sure they would leave the cheese off if you asked. The potatoes are a little overpriced for the portion size you get. Not a bad place.
