My husband just got home from having his hair cut at this place. He showed photos to Michelle of what he wanted (an under cut with length on the side). She buzzed ALL his hair off on the sides and went way too high up on the sides. It looks ridiculous. He is not happy and neither am I....I feel so bad for him. This is the 5th time he's come here and the other times his hair was cut by someone else. The other cuts were never great but not this bad. He said this was his last visit. He should have spoken up when Michelle was done with his hair, but what could be done? It's hair- it's just gotta grow back. read more

Place says it closes at 7. Called in to see if I could make an appt for 5:45 or 6. Guy tells me it's fine just walk in and someone will take care of me. Drive over after work at 5:57 and shop is completely closed up?? Guessing the guy was avoiding setting up an appt so he could go home early. Don't lie to people and waste their time. I went to this business because it was recommended by locales and I've just moved back after 16 years. The fact that has been mentioned before in reviews, the sign in sheet newbies aren't aware of or guided to, is a let down after not being acknowledged until several other people have come in after you. Am I on the list? No, but I have been sitting here for 15 minutes. The haircut courtesy of Brian. What I envisioned was something short, a little edgy and overall perfect. What I ended up with was something close to a Forrest Gump haircut that I had to seriously clean up after getting home for further inspection. Long single hairs left uncut around my ears. Longer, uneven strips of hair at the edges. One side of my head is a perfect blend of longer on top to very short at the bottom. The other side is a clear contrast of top and bottom (the Forrest Gump side) with no blending. The barber nicked me while blending the bad side and left a nice hole in my hair and a red mark too. I am wearing a hat until this grows out. I hope it looks okay when it does. I don't think I will return to this location. I wanted to like it, I tried to like it. Came in with a 1:00 reservation. There was the Avondale a Christmas party so I understand they wanted to leave early but was told they closed at 3pm today... explained what I wanted and showed him a picture, and in 10 minutes I was done. Briefly checked the front and thought it looked remarkably similar, but didn't see the back or the sides. After I left I realized how terrible the haircut actually was and that I paid 23 dollars for such a terrible cut. I immediately went down the street to International Blades and Shears where Brian did a fantastic job and was absolutely amazed at how bad the last haircut was and that it had just been cut. The back was completely uneven, the neckline wasn't shaved, the sides were uneven. Won't be back. read more

You're so stupid that you can't figure out that the REASON you have to wait a while is because the Old School experience is excellent, and people are lining up to get it? So let me start by saying I've been here in the past and have gotten good fades from someone specific I just don't know her name. I've also gotten a really bad fade from someone specific (not naming anyone), and today the same individual that messed me up is the only one available to cut my hair, great. So I get Called back and I'm already in too deep without getting up and looking like an asshole so I said why not give it a second chance... well you can see how that went based off of the picture. I end up going back to get a free fix after I realize how bad the original "fade" was and instead of fixing the fade I now have the same guard all the way up lookin like I'm getting shipped off to fuckin war. my mistake on that one, won't be going back. read more

I've been here multiple times and have had my hair cut by most of the staff. Overall, they do a decent job with cutting hair. Nothing great, but reliable for a good hair cut. The staff is pretty slow in cutting hair, but as a customer I don't really mind. I know what to expect in that area. The hours are great - open at 7 am! They also have done a good job with my son's hair. He's 5 so just keeping him entertained is a chore. The sign in system (or lack of) is confusing for me and I've been here multiple times. You never know whether you need to sign in or not and the staff offer no instruction or usually acknowledgement of new customers walking in. This system needs be improved! read more

We have found our new neighborhood barber shop here at OSBS. We walked by on Thursday, and then returned to try it out for ourselves on Friday. I'm so glad we did because the experience was top-notch. Sandra cut my hair, and she was a hoot & a joy! I can't wait to go back. I walked into this place and there were two individuals cutting hair. I proceeded to sign in and then just sit there for 15 minutes without so much as an acknowledgement. As a matter of fact I didn't hear either of them speak a word at all. Weird place. I just walked out. I'll give $20 to someone a little more outgoing. read more

Few things are as awkward as walking in to a new barber shop. Do you take a number? Do you sign in? Do you stand at the counter until you are acknowledged? More awkward... when you walk into a barber shop and no one acknowledges you. When you become aware of the waiting list when the customer who came in three minutes after you, walks to unidentified counter and signs in. When person who isn't in the barber shop but who's name is on the list, is called and encouraged to make their way back to the barber shop. I understand that perhaps i need to increase my dose of anxiolytic, but i find that the old attaché that first impressions are the most important , applies to businesses as much as it applies to personal relationships. Been going here for about 6 months, and I waited this long to be sure about my take on this place. After having several less than ideal cuts at other local shops, I tried Old School on a whim. I got Sandra and she did exactly what I wanted. We discussed some ideas about what I wanted to do with my cut and she suggested to kill the cowlick and I couldn't be happier with it. Touts itself as a barber shop, but is more of a super cuts. Stylists and not barbers and they take forever to complete a cut because they all have to clean up after while you sit there waiting. Typically only one barber on staff at any one point. Don't go if you want to get a quick cut. I've read two newspapers, watched a complete hour of the today show and am still waiting while I type this review. They would be better served hiring a person to answer phones, sweep up, etc. or start allowing appointments. read more

Was right on a street corner so there's plenty of parking. I would probably call ahead of time just in case because it seems the number of staff can vary from day to day. As far as I know, this location is walk-in only. I had a conference to attend and need a quick cut that was clean and not too expensive, and this place was the right choice. Brian had cut my hair and was very friendly to talk to, answered all of my questions, and paid attention to what I wanted. He seems to do well with kids too since I saw him cut a little boy's hair just before mine and the boy and his parent seemed really happy with it. The decor was interesting to look at and there were several TV's as well. The place is very clean (only 9 months old at time of this review) and all the stylists seemed to clean up after themselves after each client. read more

Husband got a haircut here and it turned out great. That's what you all want to go to a place for, correct? It is very cool looking especially in the waiting area. I was nervous about wait time because other reviews said they waited forever. We didn't feel like we waited too long. Another thing reviewers said was they weren't given direction. This is true, to the people who work there! if someone walks in just let them know where to sign in at. Greet them for the love of goodness, they're going to be tipping you make them feel at home in an environment you created for people to stare at. I do, however, feel like they should change the name of the place. Old school barber. There's only one barber who actually works there and hardly works there. Took my son in for a haircut in the afternoon. There was an hr wait. So I made an appointment for the following morning at 8 am. Arrived with my son at 7:50 am. There was one barber in the store. There was a man waiting. She finished her cut and accepted the waiting man to her chair. I spoke and said I have an appointment. She told me it wasn't her fault they scheduled my appointment when they did and took the man without an appointment ahead of me. I will never step foot into a place where appointments are arbitrary and the staff has poor management of scheduling. read more

Well I have been here for about 9 months now..My first visit was..Frick sake $16 for a hair cut...Old School Barber Shop would be Jim's Barber shop for $8 and real barbers but if I have to listen to Jim again with his idioms and stories one more time I will have them cut me deep with a straight razor..LOL...But to get back on with OS Barber...I Walked in and having lived in Riverside for nearly 15 years I occasionally went to a hair cutery near Papa Johns for ages for a break fro Jim's and Because Barbara who was there was awesome.....Well Barbara left and you can imagine my surprise due to some unforeseen circumstances at the other place she went to Old School and there she was...Yes the price is extreme for a Hair cut but Barbara gives you customer service that is HEAD and SHOULDERS above those at other shops....I Will be there as long as she is! I found these guys when I moved back to Jacksonville a couple of years ago and I'm so glad I did. I've had cuts from most of their barbers and have had good experiences with all of them. That said my go-to guy there is Brian. Even when I can't exactly articulate what I want he makes sure I leave looking great. Apropos of nothing I've had two separate compliments on my haircut today. And it's been nearly a month since I was last in the shop! If that's not a testament to Brian's work I don't know what is. Really can't say enough good things about these guys. The first time I went here I waited for about 40 minutes (no one in front of me) before I just left. One barber was off his shift, so I couldn't blame him. The other went out for a cigarette and never returned, at least not for 40 minutes. The following day I decided to give them another shot so I returned. The barber thanked me for returning and apologized for what happened the previous day. Because of that I returned for several more haircuts. Tonight I went in and there was only one barber working, as I signed into the list the lone barber told me there would be a bit of a wait since she was the only one working. There was one guy in there so I left, got a beer next door, and returned. When I returned I noticed the guy in front of me was in the chair and was wrapping up. I waited another ten minutes for my turn in line which was fine. When they were done the barber walked up, looked at the list, and pointed to a woman to come back. I was perplexed because I was sure that I was next, but maybe the woman did what I did and that's why I didn't see her before, because surely the barber couldn't mess up a line. I mean the list is the line, you cut someone's hair, cross his/her name off and then when complete call the next person's name on the list that would be below the last name crossed off. The woman went back to get her hair cut and I got up and checked the list to see if there was a woman's name in front of mine and there was not. The only female name was directly below mine. Seeing that the haircut had begun I realized that the barber wouldn't dismiss the woman out of the chair and bring me in after I explained how a line works. And that is why I won't return. My time was wasted because the barber could not follow a list of names. Perhaps a number system would work better like at a deli. But if they can't handle a line, I'm not sure what system would be simpler than that. read more

I have been getting my hair cut at sports clips for years and a friend of mine dragged me into "The old school Barber Shop", and I remember thinking "ok, whatever, i'll give it a try". I had the stylist Barbara and she was amazing! Hair cuts are just 16$ at both places but sports clips does a decent job but not a lot extra unless you want to pay for it. Barbara spent as much time on my poor head of hair as she needed to in order to make me look awesome. She even trimmed up my eyebrow hair and I didn't even know I needed it LoL. A lot of little things she did I had no clue the other place was either skimping on or just didn't do. 5 stars for the shop in Avondale and Barbara. I have had my hair cut by other people at the shop and they are all excellent but I have a soft spot for Barb :) read more

Had my hair cut here a few times. Nothing special (barber shop is somewhat of a joke, as there is only occasionally a barber present), but I really liked the fact that they opened at 7am as I have limited time in the evenings, but the cut was ok and the atmosphere is cool. Now the negatives, first off, no one greets our even acknowledges you when you walk in. UNLESS you walk in after about 630 pm. Twice in a row now I have been turned away 30 minutes prior to closing even though one of the times no one was in front of me! Closing time is 7, no one waking in the door prior to 7 should be turned away. Period. Today was the last straw, I will never, EVER go back. I hope the owner is made aware of their attitudes and habit of turning paying customers away! read more
