Chicken Fried Steak with a baked potato
    Helen C.

My husband and I stop to eat at The Old South Diner every time we drive to visit family in Little Rock from Fayetteville. I just love the hamburger steak but the chicken fried steak is always a hit with us. We loved the charm of their original location and are devastated about the fire. However, I love the new location inside of the old Dixie Cafe in Russellville! Service is always great and the food is always hot. If you want a down home comforting meal, this is the spot!

Dinner stop enroute to CA. While the location has changed from a few years ago, the dishes are familiar comfort foods and prepared well. Service was excellent. Possum pie (not shown) was delicious. Current restaurant space is roomy.

I went for the CFS, but the lunch special was a BLT w fried green tomato! Sold! Great BLT (double-bacon of course!), and the Chocolate Gravy & Biscuits made a perfect appetizer! The Seasoned Grilled Chicken Tenders were also a big hit! We arrived in the midst of the lunch rush, and only waited about 10 minutes. Well done!!

We stopped into the Old South Restaurant for dinner. It was packed on a Saturday night but we got right in. The staff were very friendly and the food was delicious. We had chicken fried steak with okra and french fries and chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. We took home a piece of the chocolate cake and a piece of coconut cream pie. Both were A+.

Good breakfast food. Good omelette, hash browns and an AMAZING homemade biscuit! Sweet server. Great ambience. Overall, a 5 experience! Thanks so much!

"Possum Pie," An Arkansas favorite! Have you ever seen a mashed possum on the highway? After a few hours of hot sun and a brutal tenderizing from Michelin, Firestone and Goodyear, they render down to nothing more than a greasy spot. Even fresh, made into a pie? No way. No amount of whipped cream and sugar can turn a possum into a pie. Saturday is Turkey and Dressing. Every plate coming from the kitchen was Turkey and Dressing. And it is good. A big slice of tender, juicy roast turkey, on top of a pile of what tasted like homemade cornbread dressing amply seasoned fragrant sage. All of that flooded with gravy. Fried okra, black-eyed peas and fresh hot yeast rolls on the side; a true southern dinner. Finish that delightful meal with a big slice of rich, sweet, creamy Possum Pie. Check the pictures. No possums were harmed in the making of the pie. Excellent service in a big comfortable southern diner.

Food was great! Service was great! I couldn't eat all of mine and had to take half of it home. The downside was I took 2 cinnamon rolls home to eat and once they were cooled down they were hard as rocks. Literally.

No longer live in Russellville but grew up going here and go back anytime I'm in town. The breakfast is incredible, and the prime rib is fantastic for dinner. They changed their dinner rolls since the last time I came and they are so much better than before. Service is always great - fast and efficient. The old restaurant definitely matched the vibe better but unfortunately it burned down and the whole community was devastated if that tells you anything about how much people love this place. They have done an amazing job with the new location (which has seen many restaurants fail), and it is always full no matter what time I go. I love this place and always will!

Blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream and a very good cup of coffee

Even though the restaurant was packed. I was able to be seated rather quickly a the staff was running like a well oiled machine. Hannah was my waitress both times I was in there. She had great recommendations not only for my main meal but for the dessert and coffee. Everything came out just like I ordered it.

    Breakfast menu

Driving through on our way to hike in the Buffalo River area and we stopped in for a hearty breakfast. I'm not usually a big fan of biscuits and gravy or of country fried steak and gravy but something about the reviews told me to give them a try. I'm so glad that I did. They were both delicious. The steak was seasoned perfectly and it was tender. The biscuit was delicious on its own. The gravy was outstanding. I can't believe that I enjoyed either of these dishes as much as I did. Highly recommended. I wish that there was a version of this at home that even came close to this.

Not a fan. We have eaten there multiple times and the only thing that was actually good was the pie.

Usually they give you a whole steak, but this looked like really thick cut bacon. My wife said it actually tasted better the second day when she microwaved it. My fish tasted like a white fish not catfish, it was okay; kinda resembled a shake n bake coating.. Our server was amazing! Had it not been for her I would have gave less stars. I think their service is keeping them alive. If they ever lose great servers like the one we had they are gonna be doomed. I won't be returning here. Mediocre food at a premium price. Too many other options for steak and fish here that are way cheaper.

I actually miss these old places where you can throw the shells on the floor! Our server was very friendly and accommodating. I only had one complaint and it was the corn; very mushy so my server traded it for the mac and cheese with no questions. My steak seemed a little thin, but had great flavor. My wife's seemed to have about two ounces of fat on hers. My main complaint about that is they should be trimming more fat off these steaks. All in all okay experience, would probably come back.

The bar, previously the bank, had been standing so long it might as well have been written into the town charter. You could see it in that picture on the wall--half a century in one frame, another half tacked on, like a time-lapse of laughter and spilled beer. Now, the food--Lord help me--wasn't what you'd call gourmet. It was what every club in America serves when the fryer's hot and the cook's in a hurry. They sprinkled something called Old Bank Seasoning on just about everything. Imagine Old Bay with more salt and less charm. Then they ladled out their "special" cheese sauce, which was nothing more than queso with another fistful of Old Bank tossed in. You'd think after all these years they might've tinkered with it some. But the waitresses smiled, hustled, and earned their tips the hard way. Management kept the lights on and the taps flowing, which is what management's supposed to do. And maybe that's the whole story here: you come expecting fireworks, you get a sparkler. But in a town where the bar itself is the landmark, maybe the food's not the point. Maybe it's the people raising their glasses, telling their stories, and making sure somebody takes the next picture for the wall. Yes, I would go back.
