Perfect way to start our last day in Colorado! The road up was a little wild - but fun, and amazing views! Jenny was excellent at keeping us informed - there had been some snow and the road was muddy and she was worried we wouldn't make it without 4WD - but she kept checking and texting me to keep me informed. She advised us just not to come down the driveway and we made it just fine! So glad thanks for giving us the time to decide Jenny! Logan was our guide, he was excellent! Calm and kind. My 13 yo rode at the front of our line and it was SO NICE to hear any chit chat up there (traveling alone with him I think we both needed him to have someone else to talk to). Logan adjusted saddles along the ride as needed, asked about us in general (where we were from, what our hobbies were...) told us the history of the stables and some local folklore. This ride was not as promised as there were literally no views. Pretty boring, very slow ride through the woods. There were four people in our group. We were in single file the whole time and the 3rd and 4th of us in the group could barely hear the guide as she basically was just talking to the first two and did not raise her voice enough for us to hear. Never did she ask if we could hear or if we were doing ok. Finally, they put me in the back behind a horse that expelled smelly, loud gas frequently t/o the entire ride. Ridiculous amounts. It was an experience like no other. The horses were very well trained. Everyone who works there is very nice and friendly. A fun experience for all levels of riding abilities. I highly recommend if you're looking for a fun adventure while in the area. The trail is pretty and it's near to be way up in the mountains. The horses are on autopilot so if you're timid around these animals it's really slow paced and there aren't really many steep hills or anything. If you're an experienced rider, it's on the slow side but just nice to be riding. Our guide was nice enough but was not very engaging. The road up really isn't as bad as you might hear people warn you about, although our visit was in August so perhaps it was less weathered. It's not treacherous in the sense you could drive off a cliff. If anything, you'll just have to navigate around large potholes. But it's a rental anyways, right? Beware of the pig. There was a cowboy with a large, nice looking pig by him so I went to pet her and she tried to bite me. He didn't say anything until after she did this. She didn't hurt me, but I found it odd he was watching me but didn't say "she's testy" until afterwards.. read more

I loved this experience so much! The horses all had sweet, gentle, quirky personalities and the instructors were patient and fun! While riding through the forest, the instructor informed us what we were actually looking at - types of trees, rocks/minerals, plants, signs of animals nearby and took our picture after without us even asking. Old Stage Riding Stables was fantastic in helping my daughter's dreams come true! These stables were the only one in the area that would do horseback riding for my daughters that are 5 and 7 yrs old. From the moment we arrived at the stables, we were treated like family. The owners greeted us promptly with hugs and smiles. They walked us through the process of what would happen during the horseback riding experience, liability waivers were signed, and then payment was reviewed. My girls got to ride the beautiful horses Nibbles and Spirit. They were introduced and then safety was discussed such as helmets and appropriate stirrups. There was a convenient step for the kids to stand on while they got on the horse. My family is from Florida and we are not accustomed to horses and the mountainous terrain. The owners took time to answer all our questions. My husband and I explored the wilderness with our kids while April, our guide made us feel like we were on a casual walk through the forrest. This was a dream come true for our girls! We specifically came to Colorado for this experience and were not disappointed. The staff at Old Stage Riding Stables really have a love for their horses. Our children were also able to pet and learn about animals such as a cat, dog, pig and goat. The ranch is in a pictureque area. The views are amazing and just what you expect from a Colorado ranch. Not being from Colorado, it was difficult to make it up to the ranch, but once we were there it was an adventure of a lifetime! We had such an amazing time here! Staff members were knowledgeable and WONDERFUL. The ride was beautiful! We were able to see bear claw marks, elk, and waterfalls. My three children (who are new to riding) learned so much from our guide. They also fell in love with the piggy! I would recommend coming early to take it all in, see the animals, meet the friendly staff, and grab lunch and a drink at Eve's Cantina before your ride. We had an awesome ride today! All the staff was super nice! They were all laughing and joking around giving a very easy going fee to the whole place! Chris was a great leader and told us lots of random facts about the area and it's history while we rode! It is a crazy drive to get there... but it was a fun part of the adventure!!! Great for adventure Pros: Great scenery Friendly staff & trail guides Horses well trained Not too far from Colorado Springs Cons: Some safety concerns For the advanced trail, didn't give much instruction. Large group We booked a 2 hour reservation for an afternoon trail. From Colorado Springs Its a VERY windy, narrow, gravel road but it only took about 45 minutes from downtown. I cannot express the beauty of the area. We were greeted by friendly staff, signed the disclaimer and given the option of helmets. They also had sunscreen at no cost and you could take small water bottles if you wanted. There were 12 riders which is a huge group to only have 2 guides. They asked everyone's level (almost all were beginners) and then assigned horses. It seemed they paired most people well except for a lady in front of me who had never ridden and her horse seemed not well trained (maybe the horse was not into the ride?). Most of the trail is through Pikes Peak Forest - incredible!! The views and scenery was stunning - we really got out into the mountains and into nature. Our trail guides were Ed and James, they gave lots of tips, info and answered questions. The downside of this - the trail we went on needed serious maintenance and it was NOT a beginner tail, I consider myself "intermediate" skill level and it was the most difficult trail I have EVER been on. There were SHEER drops and lots of loose sand. The horses had to cross fallen logs and take 2 foot drops. There were times I was terrified for my horse's safety and my family! I overheard several other riders who were also surprised at this. They really need to get out there and clear the trail and level off some areas. We actually had a 2.5 hour ride and overall it was incredible and I would do it again. BUT I would ask for a less advanced trail and I highly recommend if you are a beginner to only do the 1 hour ride. read more

Planned only the evening before via email & texts, sisters Tami & Laurie kept communications open sooo very well, absolutely assuring that my last day in town could allow me to manage two trail rides for the day. Healthy, pleasant horses, led by a wonderful lead rider, Monica, have left me with many hours of happy memories up on their mountains, that I pray I'll never forget! I went today for an hour ride with two of my friends and we had so much fun. It was a nice relaxing ride with pretty views of the surrounding areas. The Sue was our wrangler and it was just the four of us which was nice. She is very knowledgeable on the wildlife and the area we were in. She shared some fun stories with us about the old West. The horses were very sweet and did their job with all of us being at different riding levels. It was worth the price to have such a nice experience here! First off it's not an easy drive and you will definitely want a four wheel drive vehicle to get there. The staff was not very pleasant. The weather didn't look good, so I called and was told the weather was fine and that we wouldn't be able to get our deposit back if we canceled. So we went and it poured down rain on us. We were told that it would be an informative ride with some history of the area but all they did was point out a couple mountains. The horses were clearly exhausted and mine fell asleep half way through the ride. There was a lot of thunder and lightning and the horses were clearly terrified but they forced them to keep going. When we tipped them 10% they scoffed and said rude things to us. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. read more

She told us all about the natural surroundings and a bit of other local history. My boyfriend and I are relatively experienced riders but they have horses suitable for all experience levels. I recommend having a 4WD vehicle to get there, the ranch is off of a very long unpaved road on the edge of the mountain. We will definitely come here again on vacation. read more

We had the best ride ever. I've ridden many places, but the younger ones hadn't. The horses here were well loved and it showed. My 11 yr old beginner was thrilled with our 2 hour ride. The horses know the trail well, and they were well mannered and responsive. I rode Lady bug, she rode Annie. They were great. The rest of the family loved it too. I just don't know all the names of their horses. I was watching the youngest mostly. I read a review about it being dangerous for beginners so I started a lil nervous. Hey it's rough country for sure. Steep spots, tight brushes into all kinds of trees, aspens and more. But hey that's the fun. Totally enjoyable and no trouble. Lots of beautiful views. It's impossible not to relax and just enjoy it all. Our guide, Stephanie rode most of her ride looking back at us with stories and making sure we were all safe and comfortable. She knew all the horses well like they were all close friends. Don't hesitate to book here. One thing to consider is weather. We lucked out with a perfect cool day. But storms can come out of anywhere so plan ahead if you can. Hats, jackets, jeans and boots are recommended for sure. It was definitely a highlight of everyone's visit to Colorado Springs.
