I stopped in for a cut, ended up getting a cut and shave. I figured it was worth it, great vibe and cool barbers. I think I look good and I feel great walking outta there. The whole reason for going here was because I got a great cut the last time. Jerry did the work this time and it was great. the cut and the candor made me feel like a king. I usually have short arms that can't reach into my pockets to find a tip but I left a good one for Jerry. Bruce did an excellent job once again. Came in tired and wanting to relax and get my man self care time in ,by cleaning up my hair, beard and face. I can fully relax and not have to worry when I come here. They are professional and take their time to do it right. This is an old school barber shop with a great vibe. Terrible service. Been coming here for pure convenience for months and finally the straw has broken the camels back. On a Sunday I walk in 10mins before the shop is "officially " open; door was unlocked so why not. Two barbers are sitting "shooting the $hit"; totally cool with me. One of the barbers tells me they are opening in a few mins, so I ask if I could wait inside or will I have to wait outside. His response was originally " yea you can chill in here" but then changed to " actually can you wait outside." All in the same sentence. On a different occasion, I show up for a haircut with my regular barber Luis and "he is not in" and was advised by Carlos to make an appointment via phone or on the website. I call on a different date to make an appointment with Luis, and "I don't take appointments" was his response. So this system of setting up an "appointment " inconsistent at old town barbershop, as not all the barbers are consistent with it. The only time it seems consistent that I have witnessed, is when the barber has his/her friend(s) scheduled so that they don't have to take any other clients. In fact a few times they've denied clients bc " sorry I have someone coming in." Another day I walk in for a haircut and Luis who has been cutting my hair for over six months, f#cks up my haircut;way too short. Completely not the same haircut. The whole reason one has a regular barber is to avoid these mistakes, right? The next haircut I intend and risk to try a new barber, when I walk in I am greeted by Carlos who at first seems like a genuine nice guy. Haircut was descent(far better than the one before tho!) I return for a haircut with Carlos and boom, attitude; clearly not a morning person on this day. This guy is on his cell phone on the clock and at work and gets mad at me when I ask, "if you have someone next?" I gave Carlos 15mins before I asked him. The conversation that he was having on his cell was no emergency (I wasn't ease dropping he just had a loud mouth), and I'm asking bc I don't want to waste my time waiting if he is booked up. I also don't want to be ignored Bc you are "unaware" of a customer waiting for you, as you coast to your "appointment times" on your cell phone. That same day the owner offers to cut my hair. I sit at his seat and he pulls a intern Bruce to cut my hair. The owner gave me the impression he was going to cut my hair then when I told him, I thought you were offering to cut my hair, he said he's going to have Bruce cut it and he was going to watch (sat down). So who actually cuts hair at this barbershop was my next question." Bc the Impression that this barber shop gives me is ingenious, ungrateful, unprofessional, and too much testosterone for a small shop. For $20 a haircut you can find a barber who doesn't have the ego of a arrotattoo artist. read more

I have been going to Old Town Monrovia Barber Shop for a few years now on a regular basis. There is a barber in particular I like who does a great job. This negative review is not about the barbers at the shop, but rather the way the owner, Gabriel, is managing it. In the past few years the prices keep increasing way faster than inflation and competing barber shops, when I first came here a haircut was about $15. Today, though the sign says $20, they had increased to $23. However, pricing alone doesn't deserve such a negative review. Over the years, I have been highly disappointed by how customers are treated. Significant others are asked to stay outside in the hot sun if there are limited chairs. People with very small children are forced to keep their kids' feet of the chair even though they are too small to understand and fit in an adult chair. Personally, access to the bathroom was denied to my very pregnant wife because she was not a customer. Finally she went to the Thai place next door and they gave her access to the very same bathroom both businesses share behind! Overall the shop has its charm and definitely some quality barbers. However, the greed to make unreasonable profit and the negative customer experiences has me moving over to alternatives and I strongly suggest anyone reading do the same. read more

Went in to get a haircut and was about 10min late as I had a heck of a time finding parking. It's the 3rd time I had been there, once for myself and once with the kid. Anyway, when I got they Gabriel was cutting someone's hair so I figured I would wait thinking he was finishing up. I sat there in front of him for about 20 min when one of the barbers finished his cut and asked me if I'd like a cut. I indicated that I had an appointment with Gabriel and then Gabriel says in a rather patronizing manner "oh I have another appoint after this one...You were 15 min late (wrong I was 10min late exactly) we can make another appointment". I said no thank you and left. Now I know I was late, I get that, but I sat there for 20min in front of Gabriel, he could have said something to me, he could have been more understanding about the parking situation in Old Town Monrovia, which we all know seriously sucks. Instead he chose to penalize me. I'm sure he's a nice guy but this just rubbed me the wrong way and I would never treat a potential long term client who has already brought him another potential client in such a manner. If the cut I had received in the past wasn't good this would get a 1 Star but the cut was good, this is about customer service. For me customer service is equal to, if not more more important than the service being being offered. read more

I'll start off by saying that the staff is super nice and fun to talk to, but I feel like there were many spots on my son's hair that got missed and I ended up having to fix it myself. I usually cut my own hair and my son's, and after getting my own hair cut and liking it alright enough, I thought I'd get my sons hair done too. I guess my recommendation is that for adults it works well, but for young boys I'd recommend elsewhere. read more

Worst haircut ever, and I had some bad ones in my life; 19 bucks thrown in the trash. So when the guy's done, I look in the mirror and see he left one side, on the back round, the other square. Then he forgot I told him to cut only half an inch from the top. Noticed my hair was really uneven, then went to the car and realized he had totally f*cked up my hair. Went back and the guy, who either has a very short term memory, or just was high, couldn't remember he had just cut my hair a couple of minutes ago. The other guy insisted the original guy fix it for me- since he was a "master" barber, but since he couldn't see what was wrong with it I just went somewhere else - though the other guy too offered to fix it. Not sure why this is called Alexis, but the place at 111 E. Lemon off Myrtle is named "Monrovia Old Town Barber Shop", and it is the real deal. Straight razor shaves, great hair cuts, big screen TV with ESPN on. The owner is a hotrod nut, and all the guys who work there enjoy being there and have great rapport with the customers. $14 for a haircut and a shave along the edges. I have frequented the cookie-cutter, mass-chain salons like Great Clips & Supercuts for years & never realized there were some pretty authentic, old-fashioned barber shops in the area. This location is right near the Krikorian in Old Town Monrovia, open since 1962. How cool is that? There's plenty of parking so it's easy to get to the shop. Walking into the shop is like stepping back in time. Everything looks original or is a reproduction that perfectly matches the '60s vibe from when this place opened. It's very true to its form, with the chairs facing the waiting area, so everyone can talk to each other. Each professional barber is a master of their craft and very open to doing what you ask and/or giving some great opinions on some new styles. I didn't realize that this place is CASH ONLY, so I quickly went to a nearby bank & got cash. For $15, I got a meticulously well-done haircut and I will 100% be back. read more

Love this place....it's tucked away right in Old Town Monrovia right off of Myrtle. The atmosphere is light and there's a lot of magazines to read. I usually prefer Carlos or Gabriel, but if short on time will go with any of the guys. Carlos always takes his time, and does a great job on cleaning up my beard. The price is also right....usually ranges between $12 and $14 for a haircut. It is cash only, so be prepared. Cool old school barber shop. I've had four haircuts from four different barbers (they don't keep the same barbers there very long apparently) and it's been hit or miss. One was great, two were so so, I've was awful. Hence the three stars and not returning.) Keep in mind that this is a barber shop, not a hair salon. Recently went there without appointment. It's a fairly busy place but with a friendly atmosphere. Making an appointment is definitely better, but I didn't have to wait more than 30 minutes for my turn. The owners definitely like the old Hollywood gangster movies (Goodfellas etc), so it takes you into memory lanes if you've been a fan of those movies. I remember Gabriel being a decent guy back in the day when i used to get my haircut by him. Cant say the same about him now. I asked my wife to take my son to him for a haircut being that we wanted his cut to be perfect since we have a special event for tonight. So special we even bought him a suit. My son wrote down exactly what we wanted Gabriel to do, tapered and #3. Now before I continue, Im 46 years old, been going to barbers all my life and have taken my son to barbers since his first hair cut. Tapered and #3 has always been the cut hes received, ALWAYS. My wife txt me with a very very concerned tone of voice. She then went ahead and told me about the cut he received and said my son was so embarrased he didnt want to go to the event anymore. At first I thought maybe he was exagerating... so i asked her to send me a picture. I would post the picture but my son would never forgive me. His hair is so short, you cant even pinch it! I couldnt believe what i was seeing. Just a month ago we were there and the barber who cut his hair cut it correctly with the same instructions. I called Gabriel to complain and right away, he got on his high horse and started telling me how hes being doing this for many years and knows what a #3 is and so on and that he did what my son asked for. He even gave me a smart @ss comment by telling me i wasnt there to know what my son told him so how would i know what he said. I told him I knew because he wrote it down on a piece of paper so he wouldnt forget to tell him. Gabriel was very unproffesional, I really cant believe his attitude. I guess when you have enough bussiness you dont care when people complaint. Lets just say his "Cholo" side came out of him. I questioned why other barbers including the one in his own shop cut it right and he didnt. He said I should question them because theyre not cutting it to our specs. I understand theres a lot of regulars at this place and its more of a "mans" barber shop, so seeing a 15 year old walk in is basically not as critical to make sure he walks out of there a happy customer. I cant even tell the tapered side from the #3, he screwed up and denied it. Honestly it looks like a #1, thats how short his hair is, cant even pinch it! I suggest anyone considering taking your kids here you go somewhere else, this place is only suited for friends and regulars that fit their "click". read more

Never again... I've been frequenting this shop for the better part of a year since we moved to Monrovia. And I have been really trying to show the little spot some love and patience. But honestly enough is enough -- I have to find another place. Sometimes they do exactly what you ask, sometimes they get too crazy and improvise. I'm not going to name specific personnel, but I have been seen by a few of the guys there, with mixed results. Now, my hair is a little hard to tame... I'll admit. It's think and curly and a bit kinky -- due to my mixed afro/latino heritage. But you'd think barbers would understand and adapt, just like any other profession. Instead, I overhear comments and jokes about my "crazy" hair by the staff. Not cool. And honestly, a little racially insensitive (at best). I should not have to feel marginalized every 2-4 weeks. These comments only started about the last 2-3 times I've come in. Would you guys make the same jokes if I came in with slick, straight hair? I don't think so. Not cool. Lastly, if you cannot find consistency in your barber? Then, where can you find it? Sorry Old Town, you guys need to really step it up, because I'm fed up. You lost a loyal customer today. read more
