Rented ski gear here for my family. My rented boots were 6 year old pieces of junk and my son's skis were 18 years old! Based on advertised prices I thought it was cheaper than Sports Basement. When picking up the gear they add on an extra 10% for mandatory insurance and then charge sales tax. Sports Basement charges neither of these fees making Old Town more expensive. I wish I had just gone to Sports Basement. Sports Basement rents gear that is either current model year or max 2 years old with very knowledgeable employees and at the same or cheaper prices! I tried to support local, but I will not make that mistake again and will exclusively rent from Sports Basement. read more

We live in Kentfield and had frequented Any Mountain (now closed) for their junior ski rental program. We tried another (not to be named) local ski shop on SFD last season and were really disappointed with the unusually high/surprise pricing. Rode my Litespeed like the wind down 101 from Petaluma. Like the wind was on my back- even when it wasn't. That was after a tune up by Justin. He knew what I needed and left everything else alone. That's important when you have your ride dialled in. New cables and they volunteered to adjust them in a couple of weeks after they stretch. How many shops do that? This is a cool little downtown shop with some awesome people that work there. Unfortunately, I never seem to buy anything other than tubes/patch kits from them or bum some air from the shop pump. But that's ok - I'm not the demographic that Old Town really caters to anyway. The staff, while young, know what they're doing. They know outdoor sports, they know their bikes and can get you back on the road quickly if you have an issue. You're not going to find $8k road bikes and an assortment of freeride bikes. What you will find is products geared for the average consumer - bikes for kids, city cruisers for those that want to ride in comfort, mountain bikes for those that are still unsure if they want to jump into a full all mountain rig for their first bike. I will continue to go see these guys for the nickel/dime stuff I break on my bike commute and support them the best I can. No such thing as too many good bike shops. read more

I love to support local businesses, especially businesses that are as customer-focused as Old Town Sports. We had fantastic service from beginning to end here, and I wouldn't buy a kid's bike anywhere else. My 6 year old needed a new bike. I brought him in and the guys at Old Town Sports let him sit on the bikes, evaluated what was best for him, and then talked with us about how long this bike was likely to work for him given his skill level. They really gave us customized suggestions and I appreciated their insight. I returned later and bought a bike as a Christmas present for my son. I came back to pick it up right before Christmas, but somehow screwed up their hours and arrived after they'd just closed. The owner opened the store for me and happily placed the bike in my car. It was a kind thing to do, and much appreciated. I think that actually speaks volumes about Old Town Sports and the people who work there. i needed 2 spokes replaced on my wheel. they charged me an absurd $15 per spoke (not counting labor) when they said they were $4 over the phone, AND they installed chrome spokes when all my other spokes were black. when i told the cashier about the pricing discrepancy, he just shrugged and said it didn't have anything to do with him. this was my first and my last experience with this shop. it's a shame because i had a positive interaction with the owner when i dropped my wheel off. read more

I just moved to the area from out of state in Dec 2010 and, as an avid mtb and road cyclist, needed to find a good local shop for various service help etc. Man did I hit the jackpot! I agree completely with the other review from August 2010-spot on. I am a weight weenie and racer, and Old Town is not a super high end type of bike shop...but I will use them for all my service, any products I need that they do have on hand, special orders that I can wait for, and any other outdoor sports equipment. Why? Because they really know there stuff (the manager went to bicycle mech school and all employees know mechanics on bikes and have great product knowledge). Oh, and they are really nice people-the kind of people that you want to patron, and the kind of shop you want to be around for another 30+ years. Prices for service, gear and parts are very reasonable. Also, in addition to bikes, they have lots of other outdoor sports equipment, including ski/snowboard rental, which is where I will be renting from for a family trip to Tahoe next season (great way to save time, energy and money by already having your gear all set up when you get there). Old Town is a gem of a shop and I give it my highest recommendation. read more

What a great experience my wife and I have had with this great bike shop in Novato! We had been kicking around the idea of getting back into riding when we happened to walk in after having lunch across the street. We met the owner named Roger and he was very helpful and made my wife feel comfortable about getting a bike she was comfortable with. She bought a Fuji hybrid bike and later that week I bought a Cannondale hardtail mountain bike. Unfortunately I crashed the Cannondale on it's maiden ride so I had to bring it in for repairs which Roger handled expertly. Now, my wife wants to ride trails so she is going in this Friday to test ride a new mountain bike. Roger even offered us a fair trade amount for the Fugi if she wanted! Do yourself a favor and check out Old Town before going into the big chain bike stores that make you feel like an idiot and that only seem like they want to sell the really high end stuff. Roger sells the high end stuff too, but he spends just as much time with somebody if they are buying $600 hybrid bike as he would with somebody spending $6000. Thanks Roger! read more

I'm a terrible planner. Its gets me into trouble more often than not. On Tuesday at 2:30 pm I took my son's bike in for some brake repairs and possible gear issues. I needed it for the following morning (cause I didn't plan). I asked casually when they thought it could be ready, crossing my fingers. They thought some time the following day. I'm not the "lack of planning on my part makes it an emergency on your part" kind of person but I told the staffer that it would be a huge help if I could get the repairs done the same day. I was fully prepared for him to say kindly "Lady. You just brought the F*&^ing bike in and need it ready in 3 hours??!!!" What he actually said was "We close at 8, lets plan on having it ready by 7 and if it is ready sooner, we will call you. Also, tonight is the Farmer's Market so you might want to park in back because the street will be closed." They called at 6:30 and I didn't have to look like a complete idiot to my son. Great service. Crazy low price for the excellent customer satisfaction. read more

I'm such a newb to mountain biking and he took his time to get my bike set up and happily answered my endless questoins :) I preferred to do some of the work myself just to learn my way around the bike but he and the other great techs in the shop handled the hard stuff with ease. They definitely have your safety in mind and don't view you as a sale. I have to review this place again because they are so consistently great. I'm not an athlete and I don't often plan ahead. So when I went on a bike ride yesterday and got a flat tire... well all of a sudden I was cross training because I had to walk my bike home! I stopped in at Old Town Sports and got great advice and education about what I needed and they explained to me why there wee recommending one thing over another. They always pay such close attention to my specific needs and offer an individually tailored response. These guys are clearly experts in cycling and who knows what else. I don't know why Old Town Sport has such rating. Am I the unlucky one!!!! For one thing Never go with the promotion coupon that give a discount on bicycle tune up. I usually take care of my bike myself for the past ten years, but my wife insisted that would be done by professional, so we thought. After the "maintenance"work had been done, I took my bike on an easy trail , not more than two miles out my chain got stuck, so tight that I couldn't ride, I had to push all the way back to the store.The employees, told me that I wasn't suppose to use a certain gear,, talking to me like if I was a total ignorant, I have this bike for over ten years and never had any problems . It happen that on the tune up they performed, these guys had shorten the chain!!!! When I took another ride, the chain got stuck again and broke the derailleur on the process. I never returned to Old town sport again.I should have had a clue, when I went there for the first time with my coupon, the owner was brushing me off for a more important customer. This is my experience of Old Town Sport .Too bad there is no minus stars on the rating. read more
