Absolutely loved staying here!! my husband and I stayed for a weekend away and had the best time. The owner was so kind and available if you needed her. The hotel has a very Victorian vibe with a hint of haunted house and I absolutely love it. Our room was beautiful! It was a little bit hot to sit in the common area room as it was about the upper 80s in Wheeler that weekend, which made the room pretty hot, but it was no big deal. Our room had AC. So many pictures to look at on the walls, a cute little gift shop when you check in, and the bed was so comfortable. Honestly, that's usually my biggest gripe at places is a super uncomfortable bed, this one was absolutely perfect! And the huge antique mall right next-door, we spent hours in there and found so many treasures ! Absolutely will be coming back! read more

Absolutely adorable hotel in a quiet area. The common areas and rooms are decorated with gorgeous antiques. The beds were comfortable and the claw foot tub in my room was a nice touch. I recently stayed here again after a 4 year absence from the Oregon coast and positively loved it. Katie upgraded me to a double room with an en suite washroom at no extra charge and had a lovely room with a comfy brass bed, a view of the bay, a fireplace, a desk to get some writing done and work on my laptop. Wheeler and the whole Nehalem Bay area is a bit of a spiritual hotspot. Neahkahnie mountain has something to do with it I think, since it is considered a holy mountain by Native Americans. This is the kind of place you come to just be, do nothing, take in the sights, go hiking, meditate or just cozy up with a good book or stay in bed and watch old movies (there's a great whimsical selection of DVD films in the front foyer for guests). You can even make tea or hot chocolate in the main common room and bring it back into your room. For me it feels like home on the Oregon coast. This is an old vintage hotel with antique furnishings. There are no slick escalators, ramps or high-speed elevators to those reviewers who complain that they don't allow kids here, please grow up. The world isn't centered on people just because they decided to have kids and there are plenty of places in Seaside you can stay at. There are places that people would like to go to and NOT have kids around and the Old Wheeler Hotel is perfect for that. read more

The hotel was warm and inviting. The decor makes me feel like I'm staying at grandmas. We had room #1, which was quite spacious and had a full bath and tub. It is right next to the common room which we spend a lot of time in reading and drinking tea. There is also a great view of the bay from our window. There was only two pillows (and that were lumpy). I am not a big fan of old boutique hotels. But this place is an exception and definitely worth staying in. I asked about the talking and dancing on the floor above us on one stay... um... there is no floor above us! It genuinely could be haunted. They have been on one of those ghost adventure shows a couple of times from what I hear. Also, the host always treats you like welcome family and affords you great privacy which is also really nice. Bottom line... absolutely worth the stay. Get your morning coffee and breakfast at the Roost on the ground level. Great food. read more

We stayed in Room 4 - huge room with a big ol' Jacuzzi tub. Yum. I really need one of those in my home. But back to this place... the room was beautiful and incredibly spacious. The hotel itself is quite old (and creaky!), but all the rooms are on the same floor so at least you don't have loud creaky sounds above you while you're trying to sleep. It's right on Highway 101 ("highway" isn't a fair term - it's 1 lane each way, 25 MPH), but the windows are thick and doubled so you don't get much street noise. Breakfast was a very casual continental affair, but the best part is that it's available whenever you want - no 8:30am-only service here. The hotel building itself is nice enough, old timey but palatable. The ownership is another story! Avoid this place if you have kids, their website seems to hide the fact they are NOT kid friendly and kids are NOT allowed to stay there. We witnessed a nice couple with a baby sent packing out the door despite having a reservation. Additionally, cancellation policy is strictly enforced. Apparently, the owner is more concerned with getting a hold of your $$$ then providing a good customer experience. Let me explain...my wife booked us to stay for 3 nights but I didn't check my calendar closely enough. I had a work commitment that I couldn't move. We asked it we could cancel just one of the three nights we planned to stay. We made the request 10 days prior to our stay. Unfortunately for us the policy required 14 days notice to cancel. I get the deadline had passed, but a little flexibility would be nice in the interest of great customer service. Lastly, we booked a room with a King bed. When we arrived low and behold no king bed room was available. My wife and I are not small people, so a king bed is basically a must for us to get a decent night's sleep. Strike three Old Wheeler Hotel. You would think a hotel in a tiny town on the Oregon coast would deliver top notch customer service in the interest of gaining repeat customers. Guess not!! We arrived at the Old Wheeler around 7p.m. after spending the day driving from Ocean Shores, WA and making some stops along the way in Cannon Beach, OR et cetera. From their website, you get to choose the room you'd like to book for any given night. When I made the reservation online (for room #6), I received a phone call about 10 minutes later from the hotel asking what my guest's name was for their records. When we arrived, we had a personalized printed tag on the door saying "Welcome Brooke & Josh", which was a nice touch. Before the clerk took us to our room, she gave us a tour of the common area where there are a couple of couches to sit on, where the continental breakfast in the morning would be served, and they have a small collection of books to choose from if you'd rather read than watch television. They have an assortment of hot chocolate, tea and coffee, along with filtered water to choose from at any time of the day AND they have a selection of the 20 greatest American movies of all time, on DVD, to watch in your room. Yes, the room is equipped with a DVD player (and I assume the rest of the rooms here are as well). There is also a "piano room" with a piano and love seat to lounge about on if you're so inclined. The private bathroom "down the hall" is in fact, down the hall, but is also private. The key you're given to your room unlocks your room and the private bathroom, so no other guests can creep in and look through your toiletries. It's a bit inconvenient to have to walk down the hall in the middle of the night, but hey, you take what you can. I'd have to say all the additional amenities make up for the trek down the hall. Additionally, they don't have the cheap and cheesy toiletries you find in the run of the mill joints you can find anywhere. I'm definitely a fan of the E.O. (Essential Oil products) grapefruit and mint glycerine soap. All in all, I would definitely stay here again based on my experience thus far. Additionally, all you have to do is walk across the street to a cute little park bench and relax for a bit. Oh, and the continental breakfast begins at 7 and is open till "whenever" which is great for those of us who have a hard time getting up early on our vacation! :) read more

Why book a Motel 6 or EconoLodge when for a couple dollars more you can stay at a remarkably maintained 110 year old Hotel with a history (yes it was a brothel, yes it was a hospital for 40 years, yes there are rumors of paranormal) with authentic furnishings. So, let's be clear - Wheeler, Oregon is not a metropolis. There's nothing to see. Town is a block long. But for a romantic getaway with someone with whom you can, shall we say, make your own fun, the Old Wheeler Hotel is pretty close to perfect. Great room with interesting furnishings, just this side of twee without going over (okay, the Piano Lounge is a little much, but it's not awful). Beds are big, jacuzzi tubs are lovely, organic EO bath products are never bad. Break fast, though modest, was decent and the coffee was really good. Overall, really charming. If I was able to hear less noise from the room next door (oh, sir, please turn down your television) and if I had not been so roundly scolded for going into my room unsupervised when the various telephones failed to produce the staff person I'd be almost ready to give five stars. What a wonderful place the Old Wheeler Hotel is. The rooms are furnished tastefully and simply, and have a view of the bay. Nothing makes me relax and not think of work like gazing out over the bay as I thoughtfully gulp down my morning coffee. Said coffee is available in the common room, which also contains a fridge for necessities such as beer, continental breakfast in the morning, and a good looking chess board. Bathrooms are big, staff is friendly, rooms don't break the bank. Reading the in-room guest book entries in funny voices provides much entertainment. Hell, what more could one ask for? read more

Out of the way place in between "bigger" cities on the pacific. Great touch of a welcome sign at the door with our names on it. Continental breakfast served between 8am and 10am. We stayed in room 7, which is more to the back, no scenery out the windows, but we weren't there for that, we were out most of the time and only went to sleep and enjoy the two person whirlpool tub. They have movies you can watch, a common room with games, coffee, a common fridge to place your wine in etc. GREAT place for a getaway. It will be on my list for another get away. The rooms are small, quaint and private, more of a bed and breakfast feel and it was so nice and quiet. NO offense to kids, we have our own, but not a place to bring them, I believe that it is mostly for an adult getaway. read more

We had a visit here over Memorial Day weekend this year. The hotel is very beautiful with antiques all around and in rooms. It has been beautifully restored. Staff was very friendly and gave us a quick tour at check in. We stayed in Room 8 which has a separate living room area and bathroom. It was very comfortable for 2 of us. We enjoyed the full tv selections and DVD library. One of the other guests at breakfast mentioned the hotel being haunted, but we didn't have any experience... phew! read more

Just stayed here. A quaint, clean vintage hotel. Michael greeted us and is a perfect host. We were in room 6 but will try for room 4 next time for a better view. We had dinner at the Big Wave in Manzanita. It offers excellent food and service. we also had some wonderful baked goods just below the hotel at the little coffee shop. The hotel offers good coffee in the morning but the pot was always empty with no one around to ask to fill it! Also the morning food fare is good but very basic... no fresh baked goods. We wanted to purchase a couple of items in the gift shop but it was always closed... purchase when you check in. All in all a decent stay. There is a good grocery in manzanita called fresh food. Grab sandwiches etc.. wine and come back to the hotel and eat in the dining/game area. The view is awesome. read more

This hotel is what one would expect from a vintage hotel, with floors that aren't even, things aren't perfect. But everything is nicely done with care. My man and I rented room 5 with an Amazon Local deal for a two-night Valentine's week special. I specifically requested room 5 because it has a jacuzzi (who wouldn't?) and I do not regret it. This is my first night here and I've already been in the jacuzzi twice. I'm in college, I don't usually get such nice things, and what a treat this is. The entrance is sweetly accented with old bellhop jackets (I had to resist trying them on, they're really cool). Vintage telephones are in every corner; you can pick them up at any moment to call the owner and she will attend to any need you might have. When she greeted us she gave us a friendly walk-through of the place and recommended several restaurants she likes. We gabbed for a bit about food and films, she's a sweetheart. Champagne and truffles were waiting in our room along with a little nametag greeting on the door. There was a fancy makeup remover towelette above the sink (the little details make all the difference). I don't think the antiques or art are eerie at all. In fact, I spent a long while walking around in my fancy lace nightgown (when in Rome), exploring all of the beautiful floor lamps, the armoires (Ohhhhh, the ARMOIRES), the art and the mirrors. I've lived in a real haunted house, you guys, and it was nowhere near as warm and inviting as this place. There is always tea and popcorn available, as well as boardgames and a lovely selection of classic movies. Tip: Some Like it Hot is even better in this hotel. I think tomorrow we'll go antiquing and walk on the beach, then come back and soak in the jacuzzi again. Ahhh, luxury. This is a wonderful place for anniversaries, proposals or even just getting away to relax for a few days. Highly recommended over any Marriot or Ramada that you'd get for the same price (or more). read more

What a lovely old hotel - and how incredibly shocking to find a room for $85/night during Independence Day weekend on the coast. The town of Wheeler is pretty much this hotel, a kayak rental place, a bakery, and a musty vintage shop - but you're just five miles from Manzanita. As another reviewer noted, the place gives off a bit of the Haunted Mansion vibe, especially when candles light your way as you tiptoe down the dark creaky hall to your bathroom at midnight. Some of the furnishings have seen better days, but I found nothing that wasn't spotlessly clean. It's obvious the owners care about the place; the fifth star is in the details. read more

We stayed at the Old Wheeler Mid-week, and it was incredible! I was a little skeptical of "old hotels" in general, but we made reservations late and Anne found it online, so we decided to try it. I was amazed at how helpful the staff was, and the 1900s ambiance of the place. Room 5 is large, and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was fine and I requested and received clean towels each day of our visit. The continental breakfast is very adequate, English muffins and Harry and David jam got us going each morning, or there was yogurt, bagels and fresh fruit. The herd of 36 or more elk in the meadow across the river was a nice addition too. I want to go back soon! Oh, don't forget about the ghosts ! They were no shows for us, but Katy (the owner) tells fascinating tales of beings she refers to as "nurturing and kind." read more

The owner/operator remembered us on our most recent visit, which is pretty spectacular considering it'd been nearly a year since our first visit. The friendliness, hospitality, and helpfulness of the owner and staff is hands down incredible. Above and beyond! Everything is clean and bright. The rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable, including the beds- BIG plus! There's nothing worse than going on vacation and sleeping on a lumpy squeaky brick of a bed. No need to worry about that here! Daily breakfast is fresh and delightful. No greasy overcooked processed sausage and scrambled eggs- thank goodness! Fresh fruit, bagels, cheese, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, juice, and REALLY good coffee. There's a fridge in the common area for guests to store food. Microwave and toaster, dishes, condiments, etc. are all available. Also- stemware and wine openers! We watched movies (from the huge free DVD library) while soaking in the Jacuzzi tub in our room...at least once a day while we were there. We were made to feel absolutely welcome and valued while staying there. I highly recommend OWH to anyone who wants a lovely stay on the Oregon coastline. read more

The "private bath" for room #3 is down the hall and around the corner. I will go back, but from now on when I book at a boutique hotel, and it claims "private bath" for all rooms - I will double check with the staff that the private bath is inside the room. Just spent a night at the Old Wheeler Hotel last week. It was a great stay and I'd definitely go back. I was concerned because I'm a really light sleeper, and it's an old building. When it was getting close to the time I planned to turn out the lights, I could hear people talking in the rooms on either side of me. Maybe it was just luck, but everyone quieted down at around 10pm. My big picture window overlooking the main street (Hwy 101 reduced to 25 mph) was double-paned, so that wasn't a problem. And though I already brought my own, they had earplugs available outside the office. Various things I liked about the Old Wheeler Hotel: - The personalized welcome sign by my door - Bath products in normal-sized bottles (not travel-sized ones). Seriously, that makes a big impression on me. It's a great environmental move. - The view from my enormous window - The candles they lit in the halls at night - The collection of excellent movies available to borrow and watch - The York Peppermint Patties awaiting me - The breakfast/common room with great furniture, amazing windows, and two sets of binoculars! - The teas and teacups available in said room 24/7. I got up and made some chamomile at about 10pm. Just walked down the hall in my socks, since it seemed like the right thing to do. Minor thing I wasn't thrilled with: - The sofa in my room (3) needs replacing, in my opinion. I'd hoped to park myself in front of the picture window to work on my laptop for a few hours, and the cushions were way too flat to find comfortable. My boyfriend and I have access to a beach house in Manzanita and usually stay there when hitting the coast, but if it's not available, I'll definitely go back to the Old Wheeler. :-) read more

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! I took my husband to the Old Wheeler Hotel for his birthday. From the start the staff seemed very rude and very stuffy. We had a nice stay at the beach and returned home to Portland to find an extra $ 250.00 charge on my credit card. I called and after several times of getting no response the manager said it was from smoking in the room. We NEVER smoked in the room and I had to go through a huge dispute with the hotel and my bank and.........FINALLY won. The sad part is this hotel had potential and we would have been return customers, but you can't trust the staff and the last thing you need after a relaxing weekend at the coast is fraudulent charges.
