I gave my neighbor a ride to pay the interest on her sons loan. He was called out of town on business and his mom had just received a call from Olde West stating that he only had 24 hours to pay on the loan. She called her son and got the number off the loan invoice and we went in to pay the interest for her son, so he wouldn't lose his tools... The older woman at the loan counter refused to look up the loan number or let his mom pay the interest. When she complained, the older woman raised her voice and said, "No original invoice, no payment accepted, and if you don't leave I'll call the police. In hindsight, I wish my neighbor would have demanded she do so, but writing this review is the best I can do as her son's friend. A few years prior to this, a similar thing happened to me at Olde West and I vowed never to shop there again. I also tell all my friends. Selection was superb and the staffs knowledge appears by all accounts to be detailed. UNFORTUNATELY, they are far too busy talking about firearms, to be bothered with selling any. I arrived 9 am. Wed 2/15 and the fellow behind the counter was helping someone else. I was perusing the display cases and saw a S&W 9mm that interested me, and on the wall, a keltec carbine that interested me. I was talking with 2 other guys about the recent CA changes in gun laws waiting for the staff member to free up. He does, and he starts talking with these other 2 guys about gun laws. I finally get his attention and he hands me the keltec. He goes back to the other 2, instead of paying attention to the customer holding one of his weapons. I wanted to see the S&W too, but couldnt get his attention, so I gave him back his carbine and went to Bastiani Arms. There, I bought a Springfield Armory 45 and am ordering a keltec. I will also be obtaining a 460 Weatherby from Bastiani. Fellow at Old West really blew it, talking instead of selling. read more

I will say they have lots of guns, but the staff is less than friendly. They weren't rude, they just ignored you and when they finally got around to helping you there was no smile, friendly greeting or eye contact. Olde West has two sides to the business. It started as a pawn shop, and later became a large retailer of sporting goods, tools etc. I have no experience with the pawn shop side so can't comment on the "rip-off artists" complaint by Brooke B. I have dealt with the gun store side. They have one of the largest inventories of used guns in No. California, and an extensive inventory of new guns also. Prices are comparable to prices elsewhere. They also have a gunsmith on the premises - an increasingly rare thing to see. Highly recommended for the firearms purchaser or user. I checked off "pricey" on price range because guns are not cheap. read more

Bought a gun in there awhile back, they have a great selection, their customer service FLAT SUCKS though. They never have enough employees behind the counter, and if they see you they dont say anything, they will just walk right by no "give me a minute and I will be with you", nothing, just go about doing whatever. Went in here over Presidents Day Weekend to see about picking up a used/new shotgun... First I asked about the one rack of used guns they have out for customers to handle, he told me they are sold "as is"... Which isn't a problem but when I asked if they would check the gun after purchase to insure safety, he told me it wasn't really necessary. Also, apparently they do have a very large selection of uses firearms, they just don't display many of them, or even mention them so they can sell more new guns. Finally, I asked this meathead behind the counter about how the new Rem 870 Express shotguns are made differently than the older models and he str8 up LIED to me and said nothing had changed in the manufacturing process.... What a load of crap.... This guy was very rude and either a liar, or completely ignorant of his products... read more

Apparently my time and my money are no good here Did my tank top scream 'im poor, do not agknowledge me' or what? I give an extra star based on what seemed from afar like decent jewelry prices from looking in the cases. Had I been given the opportunity to examine the jewelry closer I would have a better idea. Here is my experience. I came in to look for an unique engagement ring with a decent budget of $2500. I walked up to the jewelry counter and the clerk was busy with the only other customer at the counter, so I started looking in the cases while waiting for my turn. They talked for several minutes as I made mental notes on which rings I would like to examine closer. Soon I notice their conversation had come to an end and I perk my head up with a smile expecting the clerk to be heading my direction in preperation to engage me for service. She is no where to be found. Completely disappeared. A bit discouraged i continue to peer into the display cases. A few minutes later she reappears and engages the same customer who has walked back up to the counter. I wait for their business to be concluded and another woman approaches the jewelry counter. This woman is greeted and served immediately by the clerk that I have been waiting for. They talk and talk. She is looking for opal earrings. The clerk will discount them for her. $75 out the door. The lady's mom is 78. Her health is deteriorating. And so on and so on. This lengthy conversation ends when another woman approaches the counter and is immediately greeted by the clerk. This whole time I have been perched in front of a $2495 diamond ring, waiting for a closer look. The new woman wants to sell her ring. The clerk takes it to back to show her boss. At this time, after waiting for acknowledgement for over twenty minutes, and after multiple customers have been served before me, my presence is noted with a quick 'how are you' in passing. Good, I lie with pursed lips, not that she waited for a reply. I wait around for another five minutes as the clerk is in the back until I realised that I was upset enough that I did not want to purchase something so special from these idiots and taint my emotional connection, so I walked out. They missed out on my $2500, and I will never be back. read more

As far as customer service in the gun shop area, it is atrocious. Are they the lowest price in town? Maybe. Do they have the largest selection of firearms? Up for debate. Is their entire staff knowledgeable about fire arms? Definitely not! Spent an hour waiting for someone to even acknowledge me as I was waiting. Not even a "Be with you as soon as we can". If you want to save a few dollars this is the place. But be prepared for LONG waits and being ignored and not so helpful advice. Olde West was teetering on the edge for a bit during the last guns and ammo mega-panic, but now that the panic has effectively passed, it's a much better experience coming in here. The tools, stereo equipment, precious metals, and other pawn wares are almost all overpriced and with slow turnover. This place is pretty much a gun store with a pawn-shop ambiance. That said, the gun and ammo prices here are pretty much in line to similar shops I've been to throughout California. The prices for guns and ammo are a lot better than other stores in town like Bastianis or Jones Fort, though. There are a good number of used guns and a good selection of new guns as well. The employees will readily acknowledge your presence and offer assistance if you have a question, or even if you're just looking. Olde West does charge $65 + sales tax for a third-party transfer, but charges a standard $25 for DROS on gun purchases from store inventory. Olde West is the biggest game in town for guns, so their FFL letter is on file with the big internet wholesalers like Brownells, Midway, or PSA. read more

I went in yesterday 12/21/18 to sell an 18k gold bracelet. I went early so they weren't busy. Went to a lady behind the counter that wasn't busy and handed her the bracelet. As she is examining the bracelet, she asks her co-worker a few feet away to look at it because she wasn't sure and the female co-worker replied, " I don't have to, I can tell from here it's crap." I was blown away. The bracelet has passed every gold test it's been given, including the acid test. But that's neither here nor there. What DOES MATTER is their employees attitude, I'm sure they see alot of "crap" jewelry, however, being so rude and disrespectful to a customer is uncalled-for, unnecessary & UNPROFESSIONAL. If I were the owner and saw that woman's behavior, I would be furious. I had gone there because I believed them to be a reputable and fair pawn shop, unlike many others, and I didn't want to get ripped off. Well, my brief experience yesterday has changed my opinion. As have some of the reviews I've read. I think people with a foul disposition should not be in customer service. So, I hope the owner of the establishment watches his employees without their knowledge and finds out how they REALLY treat the customers. I think he'd be VERY unhappy. Olde West is the best place in Redding to buy firearms. They have a huge selection and they are very knowledgeable about what they sell. I have bought many guns from them and will continue to give them my business. I have been to nearly every gun shop in Redding and most of the shops are filled with know-it-all salesman that half the time don't know the guns as well as the people buying them. These people are very polite and will help you find exactly what you're looking for. I have also special ordered a couple guns from here and they always are happy to get you whatever gun you want, even if they don't stock it. read more

As far as price goes they run a 10% off sale constantly so its really not a sale. They do have a huge inventory if you don't mind growing old waiting for them to talk to you after they get done talking story with their buddy who isn't buying any thing. I collect older guns and so I stop by regularly but I would say that 2/3 of time they never even acknowledge me being there. At 6'2" I am kind of hard to overlook, I have bought 3 guns there one of which they screwed up and it cost me an extra 25$ because they did not process it as a consignment gun so I got bit by the 30 day rule. I have bought guns, jewelry and electronics at Old West. I was very happy with them until they did something I felt was dishonest, since then I haven't gone back. I was very happy with the layaway option. It allows you to pay what you can every month. Once a piece went missing (gold necklace), but they sold me a semi equivalent one, so that's not the time I'm unhappy with. I bought a really thick solid gold bracelet there, paid like $600. But, when you buy estate jewelry you know it's 'as is', so when it broke several times I got it fixed. No problem there. The problem is when I went to sell it to them, they offered me $100, on the premise that they would only buy it back at the 10 carat gold price. WTF? Did you really sell me a 14 carat gold bracelet at all or was it 10? This is their policy, they said. I got $260 from the gold exchange on Hilltop for the same piece. I am honest. The guns at Jones Fort on Hartnell are equivalent, yet much cheaper and the owner supports the veterans by donating several guns at every big veterans event, so I'll buy them there. Ta-ta, Old West, I may go back to look at the weird stuff on the wall, but I'm not buying there anymore. read more

I went into to Olde West a few days ago to look at handguns. I waited about twenty minutes for someone to help me and a sales person never even acknowledged me. This morning, as soon as they opened, I went back to buy a $500 handgun that they had three of in stock. Again I waited and waited and couldn't get any help, so I walked out. I bought a shotgun there about four years ago and it took them a long time to wait on me, then when I went to pick my gun up it took over an hour before I could get any help. I had some time to waste before an appointment and this place was nearby and decided to see what they had, mainly in firearms. I went in and 2 of the people working behind the counter were chatting with a customer I was a bit disappointed that one of them didn't ask if I needed help but another employee quickly came up and asked if I needed anything. I was not local so with the 10 day waiting period it was very unlikely that I would buy anything and even though I told him this he was still very friendly, we chatted and he showed me a number of guns I asked about. I live in a small town so compared to what I normally see they had an excellent selection in the brands that they stocked, I mostly was looking at handguns but they had a good number of hunting and black rifles. After I felt like I had wasted to much of his time I said goodby and left. Considering there was no chance he was going to make a sale he was very friendly. I recently found that they had a gun in stock that I was having a hard time finding, I called them up and in a few minutes they were sending a new gun to my local firearms dealer. Having never done that type of sale before they made it quite easy. Didn't get his name but thanks to whomever helped me the day I just came in to look but was still helpful. read more

Only one star because I have to pick one. The owner is the most unprofessional rude customer service rep I have ever met. He has asked us multiple times to lie (on our federal paperwork). He kicked me out. I said you have no reason to kick me out I'm just standing here. He said "you're staring at me...this is private property. You need to get out" ridiculous that someone who should be a professional cannot tolerate someone staring at him haha. Sitting outside was a gentleman waiting for his wife who says he never goes in there anymore because of the way the female employees have treated him in the past. These guys are a little rough around the edges sometimes if you are thinned skinned but they grow on you. It's a fun place to visit and they have a good selection. Good people if you just give them a chance. These guys know their stuff. Be prepared to stand in line on weekends. The humor there is hilarious when they get on a roll. These guys have been in business 4-ever it seems. I used to go in there as a kid in the 70's!!, (at the old location). They are the most honest, helpful and straightforward people you will ever meet. They also have some of them most unusual and rare items you will find anywhere. Example: a genuine saber tooth tiger skull. NO KIDDING. Just walking thru that place is a treat. Everything used from old Fender guitar amps, maybe 50-100 used guitars, a whole jewlery section and a ton for new and used firearms and a gunsmith. there prices are about average. Hello. Having worked in retail all my life, I was immediately impressed when I walked into 'Olde West Gun & Loan'. The store was clean, very organized and above all, provided excellent customer service. We all know that without that, you have no business, no store, no job, no food on your table etc etc. I was especially impressed with the knowledge and friendliness of the two employees behind the counter that assess and complete items to be pawned. Although I don't know their names, they know who they are and so should their boss! The gentleman is close to my age and we talk about 'the good 'ol days'. (Actually, THESE are 'the good 'ol days'), and the gentlewoman is a very charming 'firecracker' of a gal, that makes me feel welcomed to your store on every visit! Keep up the good work. They had a huge selection of guns and the prices were fair. I ended up purchasing a few quality guns and left some to be worked on. The salesman said he thought he might have one in the back room (not much call for them). He found one but didn't know the price , he had to check with the boss for a price . I just bought my first handgun here and will definitely be returning! I called on a monday and spoke with Chris, I was looking for a specific gun and had previously been told by Nice Shot (shooting range and FFL Dealer) that nobody sold the gun in the entire Nation (lie). Chris told me they only had one gun left after filling their waiting list orders. I asked him if I could purchase it the following day, he happily put it on hold for me. I am new to owning guns so he told me exactly what to expect and the price range of what my total would be. I took my test and filled out my paper work and purchased my gun all within an hour and the store was very busy. Chris also helped me with all of this and was very nice and was good at his job. All of the employees were knowledgable, helpful and very nice. I will be buying a shotgun in the future and Olde West will definitely be the store to receive my money! Highly recommended. read more

I bought a $60 pocket watch here with a missing crystal. I brought the watch to the repair shop that they recommended to replace the crystal, Trade Winds. After going through the watch the repair shop gave me a note on their letterhead indicating the watch is too worn and will never run. Usually they try to test wind the watch at Olde West to see if it can be repaired at all. This is what was done previously on each of the watches I bought. They obviously used me to get rid of a watch they could move otherwise instead of being honest about it. I got baited and switched by these people. I've bought probably 5 watches here and $25,000 worth of guns. I simply wanted to return the watch. I said if they're not going to take care of this that I just won't be shopping here any more. The woman behind the counter started swearing at me and basically giving me a hard time the whole time. I basically told them to F-off and I'll never be shopping here again. There are much better shops in town that have a better selection and care about their customers and have customer service unlike this farce. read more
