This place is the worst. How this guy has stayed in business is beyond me. I can only think that the truck driver are keeping him in business. The bbq is weak and anytime you microwave a smoked rib it gets tough as hell. It has plenty of truck parking and I assume that drivers are eating here due to that. It's also very very expensive. Brisket sandwich was $5 and it was small. I had $10 brisket plate and once again it was a child's plate. Spoke with owner and he was gracious and attentive but the bottom line is. Ole Rudy's was a-ok in my opinion. I stopped here with high hopes of fantastic BBQ based on the 4.5 star average, and was not met with over the top service or food. We had a group of six and tried the pulled pork sandwiches, ribs, platters and sides. The consensus was a-ok with room for improvement. We didn't smell the BBQ smoke in the air, so maybe we came at an off time when they weren't cooking things fresh. Larger portions would go a long way. Prices are steep for a side of the interstate trailer situation and a very average amount of food. There is a huge parking lot for truckers to park, and an inside and outside area to sit and not much else going on. They had NCAA basketball on, which was a nice touch for me to keep up in the background. Would I come here again? Maybe, over some of the chains in the area around Tanger. Read reviews of several BBQ places. Some weren't so great. Many closed too early or weren't even open today. So we pulled up and walked up to the food truck. Ordered our meat and waited patiently. The ribs were fantastic. We tried a turkey rib. It was juicy and didn't last long. We also tried the baked beans, tasted like they were out of a can, sweet and good. The Cole slaw was puréed too long, had good flavor, but tasted like the stuff that comes on a hotdog. It was good, but not what I expected. I would recommend giving this spot a try. My $6 sliced brisket sandwich was decent, but about the size of an Arby's dollar slider. There was no variety of BBQ sauce; and although I discovered a small container buried in the bottom of the bag, it was nothing to write home about. The tiny amount of smoked brisket was actually good; but it was gone in 3 bites, leaving this light eater still hungry. I've never seen pink potato salad and the slaw was chopped up so finely it was almost a paste. The Brisket was sliced thin and tasted like it was old meat. The Chicken was large but had no flavor. Maybe the pork, ribs, wings or sausage might taste better but I gotta put a thumbs down on the Brisket and Slaw for sure. You might like the Pink potatoes salad but not us. Where do I begin.... I've stopped at Rudy's several times over the years, today it finally hit me, other than the Sauce, baked beans and Brunswick stew, nothing is memorable. The only thing I do remember is: I've never finished any meat products I've ordered. So dissecting today's meal I've determined that (in my opinion) this isn't real bbq, it is over salted and has the overbearing flavor of "liquid smoke" The brisket truly reminds me of smoky "Steakums" and the ribs had no flavor sans the salt and liquid smoke flavor. Always looking for the Diamond in the rough/hole in the wall (pick your cliché...) when traveling. This was just rough: no Diamond. Food barely edible: baked beans from a can and no attempt to doctor them up, sauce from a jar, potato salad gross, brisket swimming in grease and mostly fat, pork reheated and bland and ribs reheated so they were so tough they were chewy. The French fries were tolerable. It's just a food truck that reheats. Service? Behind the counter there was one helpful lady and one extremely rude lady. I give the barbeque 5 stars but the two side and the women working there -5 stars. The barbeque was excellent the two sides were suppose to be potato salad and cole slaw. The potatoes salad I never found a potato and it look like mush or mash potatoes with something orange mixed in. The Cole slaw it was well the cabbage was do well ground up you could drink it and both sides had no taste. The women who worked there reeked of unfriendless, attitude and snap at me when I made a mistake in my order. After 11 hours of driving you are tired and it nice to see a person with a smile even a fake smile she should get rid of the attitude issue. I gave two stars: 2 for the Service ; 1 for the baked beans; 2 for the cleanliness of the dining area and the restroom; 1 for the location; -1 for the tough chicken wings with no flavor; -1 for the steakums; -1 for no regular sized cups that can fit the car holders in your car; and -1 for whatever this is that is called potato salad. The attached photo actually looked 100 times better than the salad in person. Was it thousand island dressing mixed with mayo that gave it the bright orange color? I had the rib plate. She had the pulled pork plate. The meat was good...had a good flavor and didn't really need any sauces, but they do have their own sauce that is pretty good. Kind of sweet at first with a little kick to it. The sides were basic, nothing fancy. Fries were typical crinkle fries, but they were cooked well. Baked beans weren't awful but they weren't anything to get excited about. Bottom line is that this may not be the best BBQ you ever eat, but they do know what they are doing when it comes to cooking pig. And it's definitely going to be a better dining experience than any of the restaurant chains you'll find at this exit. read more

I met Rudy the owner over a year ago, he is the ultimate entrepreneur and has developed a great product. I go to BBQ places all over the US and even a few in foreign countries. Ole Rudy's is one of my favorite. I stop by every time I go thru town five or six times a year. The Brunswick stew is one the best around, I usually buy frozen bags to take home and serve to my family and friends. I have tried everything on the menu and it is all excellent food. He more sells his sauce on the internet so I can order it anytime. I usually pick up a dozen bottles each stop, both mild and hot...... going there again tonight and next week. My mouth is watering thinking about it. If your looking for fancy go elsewhere, if your looking for great BBQ go to Ole Rudy's. read more

I read some reviews while sitting at the nearby Flying J truck stop and figured I'd give this place a shot. As a trucker, finding an establishment with truck parking is a rarity, so I wanted to support this business since they are big rig friendly. That being said, I have detailed the results of my experience below. Brunswick Stew: In all fairness, I had never eaten (or heard of) Brunswick stew, and I'm not one that typically enjoys stews or soups unless they are really something special; true-to-form, the stew served here failed to impress me. I have no way of knowing if it was great Brunswick stew (as proclaimed by other reviewers) or not, but I won't be eating it again anytime soon. I rate the stew as a 2 - 2.5 star item. An 8oz container of stew was $5. Chicken Wings: Other reviewers seem to have enjoyed the wings and ribs, so I ordered some of each of those as well. The wings were really good. They were dry (meaning unsauced) but cooked and smoked to near perfection. However, I did not care for the slightly runny and vinegar infused BBQ sauce here, so I had nothing to eat them with outside of some spices and seasonings that I had in the truck -- a little smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder fit the bill nicely. I rate the chicken wings as a 3.5 - 4 star item. 6 wings were $5.50. Ribs: The ribs were on par with most B-level BBQ joints that I've eaten at. They were decent, but I wouldn't put them in my top five. Like the wings, the ribs were also served without sauce and were either a tad bit overcooked or a little past their prime (perhaps a bit of both). Nonetheless, they were still edible and some bites were even enjoyable. I rate the ribs as a 3 - 3.5 star item. Six ribs were $13.50. Price: The real deal-breaker for me was the price. Six ribs, six wings, an 8oz stew, and a 32oz sweet tea came to $28 and change. Conclusion: I rated this as a 3-star establishment because the food was a 3 for me (which equates to average taste), and the price was a 2 (slightly below average value). Averaging the ratings for the food and price, I was left with a 2.5 out of 5 star rating, so to be fair, I rounded up to 3 stars. read more
