This place is a little off the beaten path and somewhat hard to find--but definitely worth the search! Been here twice now so I feel confident in saying the food and service are consistently on par. Everything we've gotten has far surpassed our expectations of what it would be like, because they have their own unique ways of doing the food. We've gotten sandwiches, burgers, salad, and soup--all were homeruns. Can tell there's a knowledgeable and passionate chef behind the good here. Lots of options for everyone and cute charm. Will keep coming back here for sure--need to try desserts and apps! Update--came here this time for an evening dinner to try their entree. This place is amazing! I go to Carleton College and whenever anyone comes and visits me, I spend a whole week's paycheck at this place. I'm from Seattle and I'm picky about my seafood (especially in the midwest) but their seafood is really delicious. I had their Steelhead (on their fall seasonal menu) and it was outstanding. The midwest is not known for their fine dining, but this place reminds me of some of the famous Seattle restaurants that I remember from home. I don't hesitate to say that it's the best food in town. Hands down. Their menu changes frequently, and every new dish is amazing. It feels like you're being treated specially by the chef. Every dish is like a work of art. The menu is small (which is a sign of a great restaurant) and the food is reasonably priced. The special cocktails are always really good. The atmosphere is always wonderful, too. It's a mix of college students, couples, and older folks. The energy is high and you can tell everyone is having a really nice time. The service is fantastic, too. Can't say enough about this restaurant. I will never stop eating here. I found the food to be very, very good and service was excellent. - The Smorgasbord appetizer was well put together. - The selection of local craft brews was quite good. - Schnitzel was excellently prepared. - The wild rice soup was superb, as advertised. I don't make it to Minnesota often, and this provided the kind of "indigenous fare" I was looking for. I also thought that pricing was quite reasonable. Tried this place during a recent visit to the area, on the recommendation of a co-worker. A small group of us went for dinner. And have to say we were all very happy we went here! The Ole Store is easy to miss, as it is located on a residential street (with several beautiful homes) and the Ole Store building itself appears to be an old house. The interior continues the motif of an old house, and is divided into several rooms, at least one of which looks great for large groups. But we were a party of 5 so we were seated at one of the normal tables in a side room. Service was good, with a casual, homey feel to the staff that matched the atmosphere. The menu offers several good choices, from burgers to full entree's, and the staff are knowledgable and even enthusiastic about the menu. Everything we ordered was good, not a dud in the bunch. I had the burger, which was delicious, big, and definitely a "gourmet" burger. All the ingredients were fresh, and appear to be locally sourced wherever possible. They also offer beer, wine, and have a full bar. Next time I am in town, I will be stopping at the Ole Store! read more

The Ole Store was disappointing for us compared to what a friend had told us of his experiences there just less than four years ago. The portion sizes are small, so it's a good restaurant for well-behaved pre-adolescents and elderly folks who don't eat much. The Church Basement Chicken Soup is one of the best things on the menu. The salmon was good, but of course, a small portion. I can imagine that the pork chop would have been delicious if it had had cooked pork as its main flavor instead of teaspoons of freshly-ground black pepper. The hamburger is small and very overpriced. If you live around Kansas City, St. Louis, Cincinnati and all areas of the US south of there, "greens" is a delicious dish of collard, mustard and/or turnip greens cooked with bacon and/or ham, butter, and a bit of onion and garlic.  At the Ole Store, "greens" means very plain salad without much else on it. The ambiance is nice and the music is generally good. We went twice and the service both times was friendly, but not particularly attentive. For example, we had to ask for water refills from both waitresses who served us. Is there a water shortage around that region of Minnesota? read more

We made a beeline here to arrive while they were still serving. An effort well rewarded. Situated in an old storefront near St Olaf's college, this proved to be a unique look at Northfield (a town I have surprisingly not visited before) I had a delicious Asparagus Benedict. The Hollandaise was spot on and the muffin appeared to be cooked in house. The server accommodated my dietary requests cheerfully and followed through. The Ole Store is a cozy and homey restaurant that serves brunch and dinner. I went for the brunch on a Sunday morning and was not disappointed. We were seated quickly and our server was very kind and helpful with recommendations. We ordered the ole roll, corned beef hash, and french toast. The ole roll is one of the best cinnamon rolls I've had with warm melted butter and paired with their house coffee makes it delicious. I was pleasantly surprised with the Ole Store when I went to celebrate my mom's birthday last week. Everything on the menu looked great and our server was very helpful in explaining the specials and making suggestions. For an appetizer, we decided on the potstickers. The presentation was flawless and the potstickers delicious. For my entree, I had the spinach strawberry salad with shrimp. All of the ingredients were fresh and the shrimp were cooked to perfection. Others in my group had the Crab Louie salad (huge!!) and the prime rib sandwich. All were happy with their choices. We finished off the meal with the chocolate flourless cake with vanilla ice cream - the perfect end to a birthday celebration. I've been to the Ole Store several times, and I've never been disappointed. The atmosphere is very nice, it's not too loud and the food is great. I will admit, it's not the most affordable place in town. However, the are several weekly specials--like half-price bottles of wine on wednesday--that can help you keep some money in your wallet. They have a wide selection of foods for every meal. You can get lox for breakfast, or sirloin for dinner. The service is fantastic. The last time I visited, they let us order another bottle of wine after they closed--and they always pour for you. read more

Disappointing, my wife and I visited the Ole' Store on our recent trip to Northfield. We went there for Walleye and was surprised to learn that it was only served breaded. I eat a strict low carb diet and everything had carbs. I usually find something or make adjustments but that was hard here. All the sides had starch, mashed potato, wild rice or quinoa. I reluctantly chose the asparagus and mushroom salad. The description said the blanch the asparagus but the taste and texture was that of a can product. There were only a few mushrooms. You would think that an item titled asparagus and mushroom salad would have a few variety's if mushrooms and a lot of them. We decided to do 3 appetizers as "small plates" which was a perfect amount of food for the 2 of us. The Brisket Totchos were a BIG helping and yummy. The crab cakes were delicious with a nice side sauce. The crisply brie was good but not great. Glad we used Yelp to find this place! We often go to Northfield to shop and were looking for something new to eat. I consulted with Yelp and we were very pleased to find this hidden gem. It is slightly "fancier" than I anticipated, but they didn't bat an eye at my shorts and t-shirt. The food was delicious but if you're really hungry you may want to steer away from the sweet potato gnocchi. The serving size seemed small. This is a neat little place. Since moving into the area, I've heard people rave about the delight that is the Ole Store. My expectations were perhaps a bit higher than they should have been but hey, I'm kind of a princess like that. The first thing that I was surprised about was that they only have beer and wine, no booze. That isn't a straight up drawback for me but when I want a martini, I like to have the option. When we reviewed the menu, there was only one fish option, salmon, which was also a little disappointing. While having a good dinner with my man, I like to eat something light so I can enjoy the entire evening. The surf and turf was ultimately my choice and I hoped that it would be "special" as our waitress said it was. The filet was not a fantastic cut but had a beautiful, charred taste without being burned and maintaining its medium-rare finish. The lobster tail was not good. It was, however, dry and impossible to get out of the shell. There was a couple next to us who also ordered the surf and turf; they too were very unhappy and made a bit of a scene with our waitress. She handled it very well which was nice to see. My gentleman caller ordered the butternut squash ravioli. It was creamy, delicious and had a great cheese that I wish I could remember. The layers of flavor were really beautiful and well matched. This is something that we would order again and again. Finally, for dessert, we ordered a chocolate molten cake. They called it something else but I will just call it delightful. Overall, a pretty ho-hum experience. However, it was like $100 for dinner and a couple glasses of wine. That is a pretty cheap date in our book and makes it worth trying again. read more

Not that great when I went for dinner. The only thing that was good was the flatbread pizza and dessert. My brother ordered the duck and it was disappointing visually, as well as cold, and tasteless (we all took a bite). It was also one of the more expensive menu items. The burger that another person ordered was fine. I ordered the soft shell crab po' boy and it was terrible. The crab was soggy with oil and barely battered. We also ordered a meatball sub, and that may have been, along with the pizza, the only good food at the table, keep in mind this place is on the spendier side. Now for the rest of the experience. Service was nice, however, very, very, slow. I do not know if they were understaffed or what, but service fell way below my expectations. The food took nearly an hour. Our drinks were not refilled until we were already done eating. My brother wanted to say something about his cold meal, but the server was not around. So, waiting long enough he just ate it anyway. When she finally came to check on us we were already wanting the bill. She asked how everything was, so my brother decided to make a comment about his food. She said " oh no, you should have said something!" Well, he wanted too but she was not around.... The only thing I can appreciate about the service was the prompt apology followed by some of the best dessert we've had in a long time. It was unexpected and highly appreciated. Seriously though, I never would have thought that a huge serving of rhubarb crisp would make the experience a little less sucky. But, overall the food, and experience that night still left us under satisfied. However, maybe, I'll stop by for that rhubarb to go when I'm in the area. Supposedly they prepare a winning brunch. Located in what seems to have been former residence a large home in a neighborhood close to st Olaf college, the setting is charming. We were in town that weekend for a wedding it was our first visit to Northfield we found the small town to be a cute quaint small-town a few restaurants in town we tried for dinner and lunch so the last day we are there which was a Sunday I found this restaurant listed on a restaurant review site which had pretty good reviews not quite downtown but in the middle of actually a older residential neighborhood so I said that's a place for us and I'm glad we did yet we waited roughly 20 minutes for a table once seated the wait was a slow on getting our menus or the initial beverages but the food made up for it I would definitely recommend this restaurant for breakfast and lunch. read more
