We really were set on the duck wontons for a starter. They were of course out of them! So sad. So we tried the fried mushrooms. They were horrible! The batter was hard and when you cut into it the mushroom just fell out of it. The batter had no seasoning. For entrees, we tried the pork chop and airline chicken. Everything is woodfired so it all tasted like it was grilled. I didn't mind the pork chop. The "jam" on it tasted just like bbq sauce. The airline chicken was seasoned with rosemary and was a little dry. The sides were absolutely horrible. Icecream scooped mashed potatoes....(that's all I have to say about that). The risotto was so plain and wasn't creamy at all. Needed wayyy more Parmesan, garlic or butter. Nothing was seasoned. The coleslaw had no taste. The zucchini squash mix had no seasoning! The glazed carrots just tasted like carrots. Just everything was a little disappointing and unimpressive. Service was flat and simple. Prices were overpriced.

My wife and I have been here many times, and there's a reason we keep coming back. That said, not everything is perfect. The food here is consistently great. I could go into more detail, but we've had so many different dishes over the years that it's hard to list them all. For my own notes, I had the Short Rib Melt this time and absolutely loved it. I wanted more! The Burrata Bruschetta was amazing too. It was way too expensive for only four small slices of toast, but it was delicious. We've also really enjoyed their French Toast in the past, along with several other menu items. The cheesy hashbrowns are usually amazing, but there were something off about ours this time. Maybe we just got a bad batch...? Their coffee drinks are also very good. A few people at our table ordered lattes and said they were much better than an average latte. They were also very large. One thing that's both good and bad is that they change and rotate their menu fairly often. On the plus side, you can visit and try something new that you may not have seen there before. On the downside, some of our favorite dishes are no longer on the menu, which can be disappointing. The same thing seems to happen with their specials and deals. They used to have a Smashburger special, one day of the week, but I don't think that's offered anymore. I also remember several other specials they used to run that are no longer available. There have been a few times when that has kept us from visiting. Their hours are also weird at times, so I strongly recommend checking the hours on their website before making plans. They may not be open when you expect them to be. For example, we've wanted to go there for dinner several times on a Monday or Tuesday, but they aren't open. Kitchen closes early several other days. It was extremely busy when we arrived around 10:50 to 11:00 a.m. on a Sunday. We were honestly surprised by how packed it was, and there was a wait for a table. Just an FYI if you're planning to visit during a busy brunch time. Also, in case the owner is reading this, using AI-generated images on your website and inside the restaurant is a massive turnoff. I don't want to see AI-generated artwork on a restaurant's website or hanging inside the restaurant itself. That is an easy star deduction for me. The design and style of the restaurant are really nice. It has more of an open concept setup, so it can get a little loud, but for some reason it never seems to get as loud as you might expect. If you go during a slower time, it can be very relaxing. Overall, I really like the look and feel of the restaurant. I feel like I say this in 95% of my Yelp reviews at this point, but I'm going to keep saying it. The prices aren't great, especially compared with the portion sizes. I won't spend too much time on this, but if you're looking for a budget-friendly restaurant, this probably isn't the place. The service was mostly great. They were clearly very busy, but our waiter never refilled my water, and he didn't come back often enough for me to ask. He also didn't know what soups they had for the day, and instead of offering to go check, he just said he "didn't know" and my friend ordered something else for their side. Not a huge deal, but maybe a coachable moment. Since the restaurant was so packed, it also took quite a while to get our food and drinks. That was understandable considering how busy they were, but it's worth knowing if you're in a hurry. Overall, we really love The Better Half. The food is great, the coffee drinks are better than average, the restaurant has a nice and relaxing atmosphere, the staff is friendly, and there's usually something new to try. The higher prices, weird hours, rotating menu, discontinued specials, AI-generated artwork, and occasional slow service keep it from being perfect, but the great food and overall experience will keep us coming back, just not as often as some other places.

It is around $20 per person for food and drink which is on the higher end for "bar food". However, it is some of the better bar food out there. Dawn's is one of the places I enjoy going with family or friends.

The Ole Cafe (formerly known as the Ole Store) is back in business and under new management. It's good to have this "institution" back in town! There is now a coffee shop area when you first enter, a cafeteria-style eatery in the main section and a small bar (wine/beer) in the back. The food is consistent and delicious and creative. Be sure to try the pizzas and the desserts! On some evenings, the Ole Cafe features live music groups -- including local jam sessions. read more

So why is this still four stars? Well...this time the service/staff was less than ideal. When I called to place my order on the phone, the lady sounded very annoyed. Like the entire time I was placing my order - I felt uncomfortable and like I shouldn't be calling. When I got inside the restaurant to pick up my order, I'm 99% sure it was the same lady that took my phone order. She again seemed very annoyed and I felt very uncomfortable for being there. Like I had done something wrong. This time I also wasn't offered any jellies or hot sauce. I didn't feel like I should just ask because...I don't know, maybe those aren't supposed to be given out for free and it was just a nice thing the staff did for me earlier in the week? But I really missed having some strawberry jam with my toast. One thing I love about the toast when you get it to-go, they wrap it in a separately to keep it from getting soggy. I really liked this. Overall, I'm really sorry I made a mistake in my previous review about the credit card processing fee. I wish the service would've been better this time and from other reviews, it seems like it's definitely mixed. I still recommend giving Buckboard a shot, but don't go into a thinking it's going to be the best restaurant in the world. I really appreciate that ownership is looking at reviews!

The 3 stars was considered because as those 3 significant tables settled in, they demanded and received the full attention of the only 2 servers available, leaving about 5-6 other tables of non-regulars, non-bingo players who just happened to be in the area and decide to swing in for some dinner; much like us. The service for us and the other tables drastically changed and we waited an extra 30 mins as we kept trying to provide payment to our server who kept walking by, trying to attend to the needs of the "regulars". It was a great small townie bar and I miss living in a small town because of that. However, when we're road tripping and stop at places like this, it's important to remember even though you have your regulars... it's the out of town era like us that spread the word of small businesses like this and proved the addition outside flow. This is a real plus for us. We feel it's important to replace the salt you lose on the trail (yep, it's a BMW but we had the windows open!). We both went with burgers for dinner. They have a nice selection of burgers, sandwiches, salads and even some entrees on the menu. Our burgers were creative and done perfectly. We bid the friendly bartended adios and hit the trail. We'll be back to the Boonies when our travels bring us back to these parts!
