Only draw back is that their religious section is lackluster (basically nothing about Judaism). They otherwise have a good selection of books. They also have fun mugs and games. Like many things at Colonial Williamsburg, the bookstore is unfortunately less refined and more…read moretouristy than it was years ago, but I think that's a reflection on the visitors and their tastes and Williamsburg's attempts to adapt to what people will buy. The book sections are smaller than they were, the video and music section is gone, and they've moved some of the food stuffs and home decorations from across the hall to fill the space. Still, there is a good selection of books on relevant history from Jamestown through the Civil War, decorative arts, architecture, trades and crafts, cooking and military history for the serious historian; and of course books on Williamsburg itself. Check out the bargain table for good deals on close out items.

While on the waitlist, we wandered into this little bookshop, and I was instantly impressed. They were fantastic titles on display, and the owner is very obviously knowledgeable about books for all ages. She helped each of my kids, find two books, and said she was happy to order any books that we did not have in the store. It was one of the best bookstore experiences I have had in many years! This is like the "toys that teach" of bookstores.

We were pleased with the selection, even on a super busy Saturday (plus it was a special event day). The staff was very kind and seemed to know a lot about their merchandise. The prices were all for new books, so full price. We usually thrift or buy our books second hand, so we only got one while there- that would be my only qualm, that I think they should have a used section as well! They also sell records and have a bargain section for $1 by the register, but those have to be paid in cash. I saw a lot of great books there and was able to find a Wally Lamb book.
