My family and I have been dining at the Olympic Tavern for close to 15 years and it is hands down our favorite restaurant in the area. Their food is always amazing, I suggest going on Tuesday nights to get their quesabirria tacos when they have them (get there early because they will sell out). Their staff is great, always attentive and helpful. We normally sit in the bar area but they have a great patio for warm months and in the winter their dining room is nice and cozy with their fireplace. read more

NOT the Olympic we once knew. We had dinner there last night and it was terrible. Our server treated us like we we bothering her by coming in to eat. We ordered 2 drinks and 3 appetizers. The drinks came relatively quickly but the appetizers took 40 minutes to be served. The cheese curds were ok, but were not individual, they were a clump of curds that had to be worked apart so people could share them. The supposed loaded steak fries were inedible. The fries were cold and the shredded cheese on top wasn't melted at all. There were 5 small pieces of overcooked steak morsels sitting on top. After the appetizers were served our server never came back to ask how the food was or if we needed anything else. The Olympic has been there since about 1945. It is clean, beautiful and aesthetically soothing. We spend as much of our winter time in Mexico as possible. They are very accommodating of food allergies, and have a variety of foods to satisfy any dietary needs/restrictions. In the summer months, they have their fenced in patio open for dining as well. If you are looking for a sophisticated but laid back atmosphere with great food and cocktails, the Olympic is it. Went there today while we were in Rockford visiting the museums. It was a suggestion by one of the girls working at a museum. The place is in the middle of renovations, but is a very nice space, inside and out. It was my wife, myself and my eight year old son for lunch. They have a ton of microbrews on draft, if you drink. We ordered the crab cakes, which were very good, and the meatloaf which was amazing. It was pork, beef and Bison, wrapped in bacon, with onion strings and vegetables. Everything was fresh and tasted great. (It was a special). My son had the chicken strips and fries which were also very good. If you're at the museums it's just down the road a bit farther on 2 HWY. Probably the best option west of the river in its genre. Worthy to take a date, business meet, or something a little more intimate. Food selection and quality are on par. Great size for larger crowds, and drink selection exceeds expectations. Not a fan on the parking layout or entrance locations, or maybe it was just really cold an icy that night. Not sure if the place is good enough to go out of my way for. If Olympic is suggested, I'm usually reluctant to go based on more convenient places and layouts. Seriously, this place is great! I was not expecting such great food and service from a place kind of off the main strip in Rockford. Rachel, the bartender, was very helpful and let me try beers i was not sure of. The staff was great and let me walk around this gorgeous, log cabin inspired dining areas. I sat at the bar and got the lunch special: Mac and cheese and French onion soup, which Rachel suggested; and they were both great! I also got the fish and chips because I love Icelandic cod and that was pretty good as well. I got the wings, which were $.75 cent on Wednesday and I got three sauces: hot Buffalo, garlic parmesan, and lemon pepper wet on the side. Let me tell you; lemon pepper wet blew all the other sauces out of the water! I highly recommend it and Rachel was a great server if you get her as well. Never disappoints. Let's start with the service. Phenomenal to say the least. Walked in on busy Friday night with a party of five and told a half hour wait, but was seated within 10 minutes. The waitress was great with interaction with my kids and very attentive. I had the pork shank special with mashed potatoes, crispy Brussel sprouts and fried onions. Not a single bite left on the plate. This dish looked like something from a cooking show episode. My kids had the Mac and cheese which can be hit or miss and let me say it was a hit. My wife had the fish fry and was very pleased and the portion was worth every penny. I remember going to this place as a kid and Zak has done an amazing job with this place and is a true craftsman when it comes to food, cocktails and the beer list. We came here for our friends 30th birthday and my only concern was there was only one server taking our orders for our group of 18 ppl. However, they proved me wrong and our orders came out hot in a timely manner, plus pretty attentive. It was a Thursday and I ended up ordering their special of the NY strip with mashed potatoes as a side. The steak was decent for the price and cooked just how I wanted it. It lacked flavors, so I did end up using steak sauce and my mashed potatoes were on the salty side. I couldn't even eat it at all cuz I felt I was eating salt. My husband got a bison burger, based off reviews about it here. However, it lacked flavor. Like I should've put my salt from the mashed potatoes in it lol. If you're in the mood for an adult beverage the drink menu is is always impressive ranging from their 27 beers on tap to their homemade sangria. The bartenders and waitstaff couldn't be friendlier or better trained. Management personnel, event planning, and ambiance are above reproach. They can get a little busy on Friday/Saturday nights but once you dine here, you'll understand why. If you're a fan of bacon as much as I am, try the "secret menu" BLT. I only say that because it's not on the menu but they'll certainly make you one if requested. Been here a couple times with my parents when they come to town. They love it, my husband and I are kind of iffy on our opinion. This past visit I ordered the caprese chicken panini and while the flavor was good it was so messy! The mess honestly ruined it for me. I shouldn't need a large pile of napkins for a panini. There was way too much balsamic on it that it made the whole thing fall apart. My husband had the buffalo chicken Sandwich and he did not like how the piece of chicken was too big for the bun and that it was absolutely smothered in the buffalo sauce. He ordered blue cheese crumbles on top and there was so much buffalo sauce he couldn't even taste the blue cheese. Don't waste your time coming here if you are interested in food with flavor. This was our first time dining here and came on a Tuesday. We took the opportunity to order 2 different style tacos. Both sets of tacos had zero flavor that I wouldn't want to even pay $1 for. My husband earned a Bloody Mary The bloody Mary's we're really good - nothing fancy as far as garnishes, 2 olives, a pickle and a slice of lime - but great flavor! The baked potato soup is the best we have ever had, real bacon. Perfection! And the spinach artichoke is gooey and cheesy goodness! The chips were really greasy though. Great food, craft beer selection, atmosphere, and one of the longest running family neighborhood restaurants and taverns in the Rockford area that has survived it all--recessions, business closings, and overall ineptitude by local leaders to steer people towards the east side and I-90. This northwest Rockford, family owned institution has been serving people since 1945. Whether you want a steak, burger, pizza or something gluten-free and vegan, they have it. Need to watch a big game and try out a new beer? That too. Need a private party and nothing stuffy, here it is. The deck makes a great place during nicer weather to relax outside with a meal, too, although, being snowed in at the Olympic makes for a perfect drink or meal, too. The Rotellos have done a great job changing with the times, from fathers to sons, while accommodating all walks of life, food trends, lovers, haters, and especially craft beer snobs. They're also nice people to chat to as well when you spot them moving about, and it shows in their servers, too--many who have been there years and won't put up with your b.s. if you fail to realize how busy it gets and how many people they're serving. I tried the broccoli soup which came out cold and in a small cup with one piece of broccoli (I think it was $5 extra to add it). I've waited for chicken night (Wed.) for sometime. The menu makes claims of Amish chicken? It has to be true best chicken I've ever had. IT was very tender. The meat was fine grain. Never seen ever. Fine grained and juicy. You might have a problem paying $12 for 2 pieces of chicken this didn't disappoint. Homemade mash, w/ good gravy, and coleslaw It's worth it. Also have to mention I out of the blue I ordered soup of the day, broccoli cheese. Wow was I glad I did that. It was so good I asked for a bowl to take home with me. It was well worth it. I ha the Olympic only three stars because the last time we went, the service was terrible. Our server was incredibly rude. As a former waitress and bartender, I understand that sometimes things are beyond your control, but attitude definitely is not one of those things. However, I've been here a few times and the food and service were alright. I'd definitely go again, but only because I work not far away and usually go with coworkers after a long shift. Not somewhere I'd go out of my way to visit though. Alright, updated review... bumped to 4 stars. Went with coworkers again the other night and actually was impressed.
