This place had pretty good energy: lots of seating, good lighting, friendly staff. The staff was happy to help with the menu and how to order. My only issue with it was that they weren't super familiar with allergens/restrictions. For example, I have a gluten allergy and it took a little bit of work to find out what broths were gf. My friend doesn't eat pork for religious reasons and was trying to figure out what products contained pork (dumplings, broths, etc) and the waiter didn't know but was willing to go ask and find out for us so it wasn't too bad! Just a short update. I recently visited this location on a cold Monday in May. In my previous review I mentioned that they had two separate sauce stations. Physically they were both there but only one was stocked with ingredients. Maybe they only use the second one on busy nights but just wanted to point that out. I have always gotten the spicy broth with the "more" spicy option. This time, for the first time the broth had a large handful of halved habaneros along with the smaller red chiles. Just an FYI so that you know what you're getting into if you order the extra spicy broth. The options on the tablet were less but I found many of the removed items available on the ingredient bar. For instance all seafood options were available on the ingredient bar. There has been a small explosion of new Hot Pot places including a few very close to OMBU. I previously declared that I considered OMBU the best Hot Pot in the valley but I can't say that now. Too many I haven't tried and really the one I want on any particular day will have more to do with specific offerings and not overall quality. read more

This place is ok for hotpot. $19 for ayce lunch is not bad, but the selection of food was limited and the quality was so-so. We had a big party so they said we had to get individual pots (which didn't make sense to me, shouldn't small pots be for 1-2 people?), and I was surprised to find that it would cost an additional $0.50 PER pot, which summed up to be a lot for our big party. It's $1 extra if you want two broths in a small pot, but then there is no additional cost if you get the big pot with two broths. I was already not happy about the extra cost, but I really didn't like the idea of individual pots when water splashed out from the pot and burned my finger. It happened while I was eating, not when I was putting stuff in, so it's not like I dumped food in and caused the hot water to splash out. The pot was placed too close to where I would eat. I liked the tomato broth I got. It had a nice, strong tomato flavor. Some food I enjoyed: taro, pumpkin, sweet potato glass noodles, mango sago, glutinous rice cake. Service was good. The staff were friendly and helpful. I wouldn't come back though, because I could've bought the same ingredients and eaten at home for a much cheaper price. read more

OMBU provided a wonderful hot pot experience for a great price. For only $25 a person, you could either get your own personal hot pot or share a big one, which we did. We tried the spicy broth and the beef bone broth, they were good broths and the spiciness level was perfect. They did not have the widest variety of meat or appetizers to choose from, but the choices they had were tasty. This place really excelled in the seafood, vegetable, tofu, and fish cake bar, where they had basically every option of the above categories you could think of. This even included specialty seafoods like blue crabs and frog legs that you don't normally see at AYCE hotpot places. They also had some braised meats and a wide variety of noodles, my favorite were the wide glass noodles. To end the meal they had a fruit and dessert buffet, which I really enjoyed the mango sago. Service was pretty attentive, some appetizers took a little bit to come out. They forgot part of our order but once I reminded them it was quickly brought out. I liked having the iPad to order from as well. Although this place doesn't have the most high quality or wide variety of meats, it is overall a very good deal for hotpot, especially if you are a seafood lover or vegetarian, and I would come back again. read more

All you can eat! I reserved for my party of nine as we were in SLC for a ski trip. Entering in is a bit chaotic--lots of people waiting in line (but on a Friday) and the buffet station is in front of the establishment. Small drink fridge to the right and to the left are 2 small sauce stations. We had to wait about 15 minutes until we were seated. Even though we had 9 people it was a table of 8 individual stoves, so that was awkward. I ended up just sharing with my boyfriend at the end of the table. You order all the meats with the iPad. The stand out items were the beef tongue and one type of fatty beef slices (not sure what it was called on the menu). They were a little slow bringing out the meat but it was all good in the end. You get to grab other things like veggies and seafood in the buffet. I also really liked the fried bread dessert with condense milk. That was freshly warm and crispy! Great place for lunch hot pot!! We came here for lunch and the lunch price is around $16. Dinner is $5 more at $22. The difference between lunch and dinner is the meat selection, and more appetizers and cold bar items to choose from. However I think the lunch meat selection and the cold bar items was more than enough!!! They also offered one of my fave veggies dandelion green!! The cold bar items here are great, I love how you can choose what you want so you don't waste any food. The hot appetizers were also good, we got the fried chicken and the crab ragoon. We ordered a few rounds of beef and pork, and they were both great. The beef is super fatty and fresh. There is also a DIY sauce bar. For the broth, you can share a large pot, which you can do split pots with two different broths, or choose to do individual pots (there is an additional charge for individual pots, about $0.50-$1). You order everything on the tablet at your table, which is pretty convenient. However, one thing I do not like is that the tablet doesn't show you what items are sold out. When I attempted to order an appetizer item, the food never came out and I had to ask a server if they got the order of the appetizer, then they told me that it is sold out. 4 stars due to the cleanliness of the restaurant. No need to flag someone down as you can also do it on the tablet. There's a variety of meats and appetizers that you can choose from. The wall bar has the veggies, leafy greens, seafood, noodles and dessert. I typically like to share a big pot and have 2 different broths with my boyfriend. We always gotta have a spicy and a bone broth. There's a small sauce bar where you can add extra stuff to your pot, but I use this as my dipping sauce. Our favorite apps to order are the cream cheese wontons, fried pork and chicken cutlets, fried chicken wings, fries, and pot stickers. I went to two hot pot restaurants this past week. Hero and Ombu and Ombu was definitely my favorite. Service was a lot better and there was much more of a variety of options for meat, seafood, and veggies. I like that drinks (soda and bottled teas) are included as well as a variety of appetizer options that are not hot pot ingredients. I tried the Takoyaki and was surprised at how there was a decent amount of octopus inside the tasty, doughy ball. When we ordered our broth, we opted to share a large pot with half medium spicy and half medium bone broth with tomato. You can also have an individual pot if you prefer with half and half broths of your choice. The medium spicy was the perfect amount of heat for me since I like to make a spicy sesame dipping sauce for my meat and veggies. The bone broth with tomato has a sweetness to it that is perfect for countering the spicy broth. The sliced meat options are ordered through the tablet and we got full from our first order. This is because the buffet area was full of vegetables, noodles, tofu, tripe, imitation crab, fish, fish balls, meatballs, appetizers and other items I can't recall. We called and were able to make a reservation ahead of time and were seated about 10 minutes after arrival and were seated at a large round table where each of us had our own personal hot pot. There is an option to have dual broths which was nice if you wanted to try something spicy but also have a fallback for something not too spicy. Overall, the broth for medium spice level was not too spicy (if at all). If I were to return, I would just go all the way. There is a buffet for seafood, greens, noodles, etc. The sauce bar can get crowded. The cooked appetizer is quite extensive including tonkatsu. Once you order, the server will leave behind a tablet for you to order meat dishes at your leisure. I believe you can put in as many as you want but never saw more than 4 dishes of meat come out at a given time. The service was also quite slow so our group got filled up on mostly appetizer and buffet items. The portion size per meat dish is better than average. Rather than a paltry 5-6 slice, it was more like 15-18 slices of meat. As for quality, I think it was a bit middle of the road. Not great but not bad. Overall, solid 4/5. I don't have much issues with this place other than its slow service. If you are looking for a safe bet in SLC in regards to hotpot, OMBU is the place to go. read more

The food is actually fire. I got a veggie broth and added in corn, cheese curds, ramen noodles, a little bit of beef (like the raw strips) and it's pretty cool cause you make it all yourself. I don't know how to use chopsticks so I asked for a fork. People were so nice and were very patient with me because I don't know how this place works. It was really nice inside the restaurant and they had wonderful service. There was a little bit, but we got it. It was an all you can eat, and it was really good because it was an all you can eat. They have limited meat selection but the quality is good. Staffs were pretty friendly but the food took forever to come out and something was always missing from the orders. We waited at least 10-15 minutes for the meats and always had to ask a staff to check. Some new tables came in and got their meats right away, we came in and had to stare at the boiling broth for 10 minutes before we found a staff to ask where the meat was. To add to the frustration, they gave us the bill when we were still cooking the (late) meat...I checked the time, and we've only been eating for a little over an hour and that was only because we had to wait for the meat to come out. This place is just ok. My biggest criticism is that Ingredients are not fresh. Then the broth was really mediocre. A good hotpot place should have fresh ingredients and a good broth since the restaurant does not have to cook. We didn't feel like eating spicy so just had the bone broth soup, which didn't taste like much. The server was surprisingly nice and attentive to us, but the ordering system on the iPad was a hit and miss. We had to order things twice cause the guy took forever to bring our food out. The ingredients that were brought out had a slightly frozen gray tone to it. It's surprising to me that being literally next to China town supermarket their ingredients would be not fresh. I thought the best thing was their sauce isle. It's super authentic and has all the Chinese sauces a Chinese person would want. OMBU is awesome! They've got a much larger selection of food available with the AYCE, including chicken wings, fries, pot stickers, fried pork, and more. The meat selection is also more than most places offer for the same price. All of the options really set it apart from the other places. We do a split pot with beef bone broth on one side and spicy on the other. You can get it as spicy as you want, but watch out as it gets spicier and spicier as it boils down. I also like that they do the tablet ordering so you can keep adding exactly what you want as time goes on. Service is promtpt. Friday/Saturday nights are often pretty busy here. Definitely try and get here early. Lunch is also a little less if you want to save some money. It's awesome to see this area get a bunch of restaurants, a couple markets, and more. Just to start, I ALWAYS go here for hot pot. I have gone to the other establishments in the Salt Lake area, but the one place I come back to is OMBU. I have the best experiences at this hot pot versus the others I have been to. OMBU is located right next to Chinatown Supermarket in the plaza next door. There is lots of parking in that plaza. Once you walk in, you're greeted by the host. There is normally a wait because of how popular it is, but sometimes you get lucky and there is no wait. I tend to average about a 15 to 30 minute wait on a weekend. Weekdays, I don't think there is much of a wait. Once you're seated, you pick the broth and order your meats. The other options are served buffet-style. The broths come out pretty fast and the meats come out shortly after. The main thing I love about OMBU is their numbing spice, mala, broth. I've been to other hot pot places and their mala tastes different, but OMBU's mala is just perfect! It satisfies my craving every time. I honestly go to OMBU for their MALA BROTH and their beef bone broth. With those broths, I mainly eat pork, glass noodles, tofu skin, black fungus mushrooms, bok choy, and cabbage, that's all I need. Another thing that I like about OMBU are their single person pots for a dollar charge or so. I find it more comfortable than a giant pot, but OMBU offers that option as well. read more
