I go to NIU, so when I'm craving sushi this is my go-to. I frequently order from this place often and the problem that happens almost every time is the tuna and avocado is gray looking and it doesn't taste very good. Many times I have been there when it is a little slower and they have tested their recipes out on me for free and it's amazing and gets more creative every time! They once overcharged me accidentally, didn't have my phone number but remembered who I was. Next time I went in they apologized profusely and made sure to discount my meal to correct their mistake. I live locally, travel all over with my career, and this is honestly the best sushi restaurant I've been to. When I go to other sushi places, I always compare it to Omi Sushi. I had been in Dekalb for a short visit and decided to have dinner at Haru of Japan after reading the positive reviews by my fellow diners. The restaurant is clean and quaint with smart decor. The shades used throughout the dining area divided the small space nicely and offered a semblance of privacy. I was immediately greeted and welcomed by the chef from behind the work station. My waitress was accommodating, attentive and efficient. I ordered the Haru dinner which included five pieces of nigiri and a California roll preceded by miso soup and ginger-dressed salad. The soup had a nice balance of miso, kelp and tofu but fairly standard. The salad was crisp and refreshing. The highlight of my meal was the chefs nigiri. It was an outstanding display of a few perfectly matched perfectly prepared fresh ingredients. I was immediately taken by the quality of each large slice of fish which included tuna (maguro), salmon (sake), yellowtail (hamachi), "white tuna" (escolar) and shrimp (ebi.) Between the fish and rice was a hidden smear of wasabi. Unlike much of the feeble, lifeless green paste I've encountered at many other sushi places, this wasabi had that nice expiratory burn that made me aware that I just ate something from the horseradish family. I can't say I have ever been too impressed by many California Rolls, but the chefs roll of fresh ingredients in flawlessly seasoned rice and dotted with sesame seeds was the ideal partner to the nigiri. To end the meal, the chef sent a sampling of carved cantaloupe and a strawberry dolloped with scant whipped cream and chocolate sauce. I could have ended there but red bean ice cream is one of my favorites and it was a hot July evening. I was served two scoops of pink heaven with two chocolate tuiles on the side. read more

Omi Sushi is the best sushi establishment in DeKalb. If you are worried that this establishment is another one of those bastardized sushi places that coats everything in a spicy mayo or panko for those with unrefined palates... well... Unfortunately they do offer that stuff here too, but that's virtually inescapable given that this is: 1. Northern Illinois, flyover state with dumb meatballs that have diets consisting exclusively of casseroles. 2. College town, businesses adapt to college student tastes and needs by making food as divey and cheap as possible (coating it in mayo or deep frying it). HOWEVER, Omi sushi offers both sushi and sashimi and it is of a remarkably high quality given the store's locale and alternatives in the area. I'm not fooling myself here, I am fully aware that getting ultra high quality sushi requires me to either travel closer to Chicago or some other metropolitan city with more renown sushi chefs, but Omi sushi does just enough to tame any sushi cravings; keeping me from having to tread great expanses to get the something that more closely replicates what would be offered in Japan. The freshness of the seafood is tops is the area. Clean and refined flavors are allowed to come through in their sushi rolls, which is a good indication of how good their rice is as it does not muddle the fish flavors. Service was also quite impressive for the few times I have gone there, which is always a plus. Price of menu items is comparable to any other sushi place you go to in town, which is an incentive to go here as opposed to Fushi Yami or Mikimoto's as those places pale in comparison in both quality and menu options. read more

Ate here for lunch. Service was very, very good. They are clearly intent on ensuring a good experience from a service standpoint. Unfortunately the environment wasn't great. It was a little on the warm stuffy side, and the music was too loud, contemporary and tinny sound. Authentic Japanese music would be a huge improvement. So, on that particular day, hot and noisy. Miso soup is not near as good as when under previous ownership. Didn't have that hearty taste. Entree's were ok but I didn't really detect any notable improvement. If i could give this place zero stars I would. My friends and I went out to eat here and I gotta say it was the Worst experience I have ever been through. my friend ordered ice tea and he was very specific on ice part because they messed up his order before. When we got are drinks back the waiter places hot tea near him and my friend tries to return it saying that wasn't what he wanted. The guy insisted he was right and left. We had to get another waitress to get us the correct order. Finally when the gentlemen came back to place are food orders I asked for my meat to be cooked well done. Because I'm pregnant and I can't eat raw food. Red meat. Our order did not arrive for over 30 minutes and they didn't even give us our soups till we asked them to. Disappointed and hungry I finally got my food and I received very under cooked meat. The waiter took another 30 minutes to refill are drinks that were empty upon getting are food. Because of our not-so-good experience before, my wife and I wanted to give them another try tonight. We ordered an appetizer of Tako-Su (kinda like an octopus salad), and I ordered Spicy Scallop rolls and Veggie rolls for my meal. My sushi is just bland. Flavors are not popping out nearly as much as I am used to. The veggie rolls have a strange sweet taste to them. One thing I HATE is when I receive an appetizer at the same time as a meal. The Tako-su octopus appetizer actually came AFTER I was done with my meal. I took one bite of the octopus, and it seriously tasted like I had a piece of an old gym shoe in my mouth. I do not recall having such a bad dish at a restaurant before! The service is sssslllllloooooooooooooowwwww. Even if the house is not packed, expect to be ignored. The sushi is also slow. The food is just below mediocre. My summary: Next time I crave Japanese food, I would rather drive 35 minutes to JuRin than drive 5 minutes to Haru of Japan. Just picked up a sushi roll and house salad for lunch. The lettuce was wilted and soggy, they give a lot but it's old lettuce which I did not eat. Not impressed with the ginger dressing either. I was so excited when another Japanese restaurant opened up in the Sycamore area, and I couldn't wait to give it a try. The first time I ate there, I went with two sushi lovers, and we ordered a variety of rolls. They were okay, but we weren't blown away. We gave it a second, third, and even a fourth try, ordering something new each time, and we were left with the feeling that we had paid too much for what we had eaten. The quality of the fish is undeniable--it has been very fresh every time we've ordered sushi or sashimi. The cucumber sashimi appetizer is fantastic. However, the rolls are, as other reviewers have mentioned, typically bland and sometimes sweet, which I find strange. The entrees are one-dimensional. The yakisoba noodles were drenched in sauce and tossed with very few previously frozen vegetables. The chicken katsu was nothing more than the description--a breaded piece of chicken with rice and side of strangely sweet and vinegary sauce. I think my expectations were too high. It's unfortunate that the food is sub par--the dining room is comfortable, the staff polite and welcoming, and the carry-out always promised quickly. If it's good food at a reasonable price you're after, stick with Fushi Yami. read more

Amazing sushi! The prices are excellent for the quality and quantity of the food you're getting. Every time we go, we pick three menu items and it is around $5 - $10 cheaper than going to a restaurant that sells American food, even with an employee discount. They have lunch and dinner menus on weekdays. Most of the menu is the same but there are lunch specials. The dinner menu is bigger, but all the sushi available doesn't change. The sushi is very fresh and tastes wonderful. I've ordered about 4 different types of rolls, and they were excellent. I had the fried pork and fried chicken, both amazing. It comes with a scoop of rice, Japanese potato salad, house salad, and miso soup. The soup is to die for! It's very tasty and you can tell this is fresh, not microwaved or leftover. They also serve a selection of Korean dishes! I haven't tried any yet, but next time I go, I am definitely going to get something Korean. We also came in for my boyfriend's birthday and they gave us a tempura fried ice cream as a special treat from the chef. They have very friendly service and they check up on how you're doing enough times that it's completely comfortable. They also have Japanese and Korean music playing in the restaurant. When you leave the restaurant, everyone who is working makes sure to say farewell. I love this place more than Fushi Yami and Mikimoto, I just wish they were open on Sundays. read more
