My husband and I have always been pretty picky when it comes to optometrists, and given that you only need to go once a year, it's been hard to find someone we truly liked... until Dr. Hochberg. He's super knowledgable and attentive. He's also one of the first optometrists that is sensitive enough not to make me feel bad about my vision but suggests ways to protect my eyes. For example, he suggested that my husband gets glasses that filter out blue wavelengths (since these tend to be the ones that are most harmful to vision). The last time we went, we were rather rushed because the only available time slot was the morning when my father was due to arrive at Bradley Airport. Never before had I felt so much like a demanding customer, constantly rushing to see if we could either wrap up early, or prepay so we wouldn't have to pay after the checkup. I felt badly, but also didn't want to keep my father waiting at the airport! Dr. Hochberg and his staff were as considerate and patient as can be. I had a great experience here with Dr. Hochberg and Christine, who helped me pick out glasses. I'd recommend this spot to anyone but definitely make an appointment way in advance; I had to wait many weeks for an appointment. Dr. Hochberg was personable and professional. He walked through what he was doing and explained why he was testing certain things. He was comprehensive and offered some tips that I hadn't heard of before. Christine, who I believe is new to the practice, was truly awesome and helping me pick out frames. She picked up on what I was leaning toward and ended up picking out some frames I would not have noticed. She made the process fun. Dr. Hochberg mentioned that Cigna is good insurance when working with them. That being said, my glasses still ended up being more expensive than I was anticipating, so I could only buy one pair in this visit, which was a little bit of a bummer. read more

I recently moved to the area and saw that this location had a high rating. Boy was I surprised by reality. I called to make an appointment weeks ago and provided my Bsbc insurance and the receptionist accepted it and made the appointment. After waiting weeks to get in, I take time off of work, show up and the receptionist the tells me that they dont accept my insurance. Then they proceed to say they can bill it under a specialist visit. It really just shows lack of patient priority on behalf of the buisness. The insurance we told you accept, we actually dont, but please let us charge you a $50 copay so we don't lose money on this appointment time. Very disappointed any medical office would be run like this. read more

The best optometrist. The best eye exam I've had. Omnivision Eye in Hamden accepts insurance. I ended up paying less out of pocket than any other optometrist. Friendly, professional staff. Comfortable, clean, well-equipped office. The glasses, however, are really expensive - the glasses I looked at were close to $800 with lens and lens coating, the less expensive option - no special coats, cost over $450. I picked up my glasses online - top of the line- trivex lens for $100.00. I'm just not sure why anyone would want to buy glasses at a bricks and mortar shop when you can get the same but better for so much less online. read more

I wish every visit to every doctor could be this good. EVERYONE in the office was fantastic. The only suggestion I had was for them to add a spa so I could get a massage or some aromatherapy so I could find an excuse to stick around longer to soak up more of the great energy in the office. While I was waiting it felt to me as if they handled every single customer superbly. They gave a gentleman two free notepads when only one had fallen off - free of charge. And the next person who came in had an endless barrage of questions about lenses, coatings, etc - so many questions that I was getting stressed, and the office staff was exceptional. Other medical practitioners should spend an hour or two here to watch and listen. Anyone eager to learn could really come away from this office with many gems. Went here for the first time yesterday since having new insurance and needing to find a new doctor. The front end staff was very friendly and checked me in quickly. The assistant did all my basic testing in one room (air puff test, field test, etc) pretty easily. Then I went into the exam room and the doctor saw me under a minute after I sat down! I loved not having to wait 10 minutes or even 45 like some other doctors' offices. He was friendly and did a thorough job with dilation and his exam. Office was very clean and inviting. Another clerk/assistant/front end person helped me browse their selection of sunglasses, though I didn't end up with anything there. The location is very convenient near the corner of skiff with tons of parking in front or on the side. I'll definitely be going back for my next appointment! read more

After years of so so service from opticians, I decided to give Omnivision a try. I was not disappointed. If you need an eye exam, get it done here. If you need glasses, get them here. The selection is much better than the typical mall or chain store. The first thing I noticed was that there was enough staff to handle everything that was going on in the office. My first visit was for a full eye exam to see if I was a candidate for LASIK. Knowing this, Dr. Hochberg did a full exam and all of the pre-screening I would need for a LASIK exam. I didn't know it at the time but this saved me money as well as time when I went to the recommended LASIK facility. The staff is great. Everyone there is aware of who needs what and makes sure that you are taken care of every step of the way. The best thing was that there wasn't any hard sell. The pricing that I saw on everything was very competitive. No gimmicks, just good customer service. I listened to the 5-6 other customers being helped and everyone was receiving excellent service. read more

Tried calling several times to make an appointment for an annual eye exam. The first time they took my number and promised to call back within an hour. When I called back that afternoon my call wasn't answered. I called again the next day and was put on hold for over 5 minutes listening to a recording of the doctors life story. This is a great practice that I plan on coming back to. I came in for a schedule eye dilation. The technician did some preliminary tests and she was very nice and never made me feel like I was in a doctor's office. Then she brought me into one of the exam rooms to wait for the doctor. I saw Dr. Louis Hochberg and he is a great people-person and really knows how to talk to a patient. He explained everything he was doing and was great at helping me relax, since I can be on edge when objects are pointed close to my eyes or when eye drops need to be administered. I've always hated getting eye drops and would sometimes have panic attacks; this is because whoever is giving me the drops would have me look up and then drop them from a foot in the air. Dr. Hochberg administers them by pulling my eyelid down, having me look up, then holding the dropper out of my line of sight below my cornea and giving the drop. This is much easier and the best way I've ever taken drops. He is thorough and good at answering questions and concerns. He doesn't act like he just needs me to get in and out the door. The front desk receptionists are very nice and don't act annoyed as some other medical receptionists tend to be. The office decor is very soothing, as well. My only complaint is that I waited 20 minutes to be seen by the tech, even though I had a scheduled appointment, which I had to take time off of work for. Also, after my dilation, the tech tested me again and asked me if the doctor said I was all set after she was done with me. I told her I had no idea and to ask him. She asked him and he did indeed have to see me again. I felt that she should have either known the protocol after a dilation, or should have asked him first instead of putting it on me. If I was wrong I would have either left prematurely if I still needed to see him, or would have waited around for nothing if he didn't need to see me. Nonetheless, that is a minor complaint and everyone was very nice. I plan on switching eye doctors to Dr. Hochberg the next chance I get. read more

Since we moved to the New Haven area in the fall of 1994, I have used several eye doctors. I started using Omnivision Eye Associates more than 10 years ago and have been totally satisfied with the professionalism of Dr. Hochberg and every member of the staff with which I have interacted. It doesn't hurt that this office is very convenient for me, being less than a mile from my home. Another wonderful plus, is the beauty of the office and displays. Patient loyalty is important to me. Dr. Hochberg and his team no longer share my values. After being a patient of his for over 20+ years when I asked that he see my husband for an eye emergency because my husband woke up with something in his eye, I was told by his staff: #1 - They are no longer taking new patients, #2: "It was a billing issue" and #3 - I didn't get a return phone call after they were checking with their Billing Dept. - After waiting 45 min, I decided to call back. This time they just told me my husband was better off going to Total Vision! Seriously, after all these years, Dr. Hochberg couldn't see me and my husband and show a little human kindness. I guess getting put on hold, getting told excuses and not receiving a return call back they haven't proven that I'm a valuable patient. I'm walking away after all these years . Been going to Omnivision, for over a decade. I love Dr. Hochberg, but rest of staff are unorganized. Turnover rate is high, and they're never on same page. One staff will tell u one thing and other staff will say differently. Also, contacts/glasses are always promised w/in 2 wks. Yet, when 2wks pass, it's always an excuse of items not being in stock and on back order. Also, back in January, I used partial portion of my VSP instance, to order 90 day supply of contacts. I was told that I could use remaining portion, later in calendar year, b4 Dec. 31st. So, I call in September and am told that once u use any portion of VSP, it all must be used or it cancels out. She apologized and said she's sorry for whoever told me otherwise. I'm tired of the yearly apologies and false information. If it wasn't for Dr. Hochberg being so nice and knowledgeable, I would've left this place, years ago. read more

I have been returning to Omnivision in Hamden for years, and now bring my daughter also. Dr Hochberg is always 100% friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and explains everything so clearly. The staff is also completely friendly, competent, professional. They make dealing with insurance and lens discounts a breeze. The office runs on time, always, and has a very efficient routine. I never even wait for the doctor more than a minute after I'm brought to the exam room. The shop is pristine and beautiful. And Nina, the optician, is the absolute best. She is super friendly and also respectful of different people wanting different things. She is super good at picking up on your taste and helping you find frames that you like and that look good on you. She'll tell you her opinion in the most tactful way, if you ask her for that assistance, and she has a terrific eye, no matter what your style. She never pressures to buy more expensive things, and is happy with you if you get a good deal. Last time I went, she stayed to help me during her lunch break, and she was so gracious I didn't even realize it until I noticed that everyone else was gone. In a nutshell, Omnivision in Hamden is stellar at customer service, and they always make you feel like the most valued customer they have. This place is almost too good to be true! They obviously value customer service very highly. Everyone is extremely friendly. The whole practice runs very efficiently. I had brought lots of reading material since all of my experiences at other eye doctor practices had taught me that there would be a lot of downtime -- not so here. Throughout the whole process I never had to wait more than 30 seconds -- everything ran so smoothly that I felt like I had stepped into some sort of alternate universe. They have all of the latest toys and gadgets, and do a very thorough exam. They also have a nice selection of frames. Dr. Hochberg is friendly and kind. He figured out why I've been having some problems with my eyes too! This is the sort of place where they not only have a candy jar and free pens, but also freshly picked apples and a little nook where their awesome staff will play movies for kids who come along with their parents. I didn't have a sitter at the time of my eye exam and my 1 year old was being a 1 year old and the receptionists entertained him while I had my exam done. Got my eye exam at a different place but went here to get my glasses because I heard they had a better selection of frames. Very friendly staff, offering great recommendations without being pushy. Pointed out which frames came in larger or smaller versions, different colors, etc. Ended up getting both regular glasses and prescription sunglasses which were totally worth the splurge. When I went back to pick them up (a day or two before the quoted time), they knew me by name, took time adjusting frames. Went back one more time to fine tune the fit and again they knew me by name. Every visit has been great, the office is clean and organized, the staff is super friendly, Dr. Hochberg is kind and easy to talk to about the visit, and the flow of the visit always goes smoothly. They have a great selection of fashionable and unique eyewear which I can appreciate since I prefer to wear something different than most. I have been going to OmniVision Since living in Hamden the past 10 years. It's a place where they know who you are and always feel welcome. They are quick to see me for non scheduled eye issues like styes or pink eye. The office is clean and well managed. I have to single out Nina the optical manager. She also seems to be the reason why the office runs as efficiently as it does from my point of view. She has helped me with billing, appointments and of course optical gear. I always ask for her when I have an eye issue because I know she will do what she can to get me seen as quickly as possible. I've bought at least ten sunglasses from her over the years. She really has the concept of how ones personal facial features effect how a pair of glasses/sunglasses fit my face. She is quick to tell me, no those don't work or yes those are the ones! If I find a pair that fits and they don't have the color I like in stock it takes no time to get it ordered. It's always a pleasure to work with Nina, Dr. H and the staff. My like that they have a play cubby with videos for my children when I am trying on glasses. It's the little touches that make OmniVision standout from the rest but that's why I continue to come back.
