    Aiko I.

I am Japanese, born and raised in Japan. Omusubi is one of the best selling food in Japanese convenience stores. Convenience stores' onigiris are typically with an easy-to-pull-away wrapper that separates the rice and the seaweed/nori. It is to keep the nori's crispiness to enjoy the contrast against the soft, tender rice. It is usually sold in a refrigerated space, and the majority of people prefer not to reheat it. Omusubi can also be a classic homemade snack best made by mom. Typically served warm or at room temperature, and rice and nori are not separated, thus nori is softened on the rice (as it absorbs moisture from rice). It gives it a very different texture from those in convenience stores and holds a nostalgic place in the hearts of most Japanese people. Also, omusubi's filling is usually very simple - using salty preservatives (no need to cook). Having said that - I thought Suzume's menu was unique, quite different from those onigiris that I grew up with in Japan. Suzume's omusubis are served warm, and when you order takeout they are served in the pull-away plastic wrapper - warm omusubi in the easy-to-pull-away wrapper is totally new omusubi serving style to me! And their filling options are atypical and many fillings are "cooked" items, such as Spicy Pork Miso, Eggplant Sesame Miso, garlic Shiitake, etc, many of them are more "sweet" side than "salty". I think the menus are more for catering to this city's diverse populations that have more diverse preferences beyond my imaginations, and they make sure to have a few classic simple Japanese filling options for Japanese immigrants like me :). We had - Chicken Teriyaki - Shirasu & Shiso with Tempura bits (Omusubi of the month, with baby anchovy, Japanese herb/perilla, tempura bits, one of the few salty filling options) - Tuna & Green Onion They were made to order, and the service was very quick. I was excited when I held freshly made warm onigiris in my hands. They tasted OK (although a bit sweeter for my liking) to me, and the rice texture could be better. But I felt the place is doing its best in introducing omusubi to the new world. Owner's warm customer service will surely make people come back. Also, the price setting is absolutely reasonable for the effort put in, and the creative fillings are inviting to the diverse Torontonian population for sure. I noticed they have beautiful bento boxes - that did look authentic. That is the next food for me to try! Along with classic simple Japanese onigiri items.

such a cute, and charismatic gem found in the 707 market that specializing in triangle rice balls (onigiri)! the owner is so friendly and is quick to make your order. we got 3 rice balls to try (green onion tuna, spicy pork, miso eggplant). green onion tuna was my personal fave, but they were all super solid with an amazing price point (~$4) each. the bonus of having many different stalls surrounding allows for u and a group to have various dishes to try and a taste for different ethnic foods!

Pretty good! I tried the eggplant sesame miso, spicy pork miso, and garlic shiitake mushroom variations. Was definitely surprised how large these omusubis are since I was stuffed after eating all 3 but it also isn't just all rice, as they pack in a good amount of ingredients into it. Probably liked the garlic shiitake mushroom one the best but if I were to come back the japanese sweet potato one looks pretty enticing. The lady running the shop is super nice and friendly too :)

I had one of the best meals from Bar Suzume first time I tried it. And what could be better and more appropriate than using a food stand? Contactless payment, even without using a middleman this seems the best way to get some variety in your meal plans. I can't pass these vendors by without stopping for something. Omusubi is the rice ball signature item in the menu with 8 or so flavours. It's a sushi grade rice packed around a savoury centre sort of like a snowball with a piece of ice inside : ) There's an ingenious poly wrapper around the triangle shaped ball that has a pull tab to reveal the rice ball. Between the disposable wrapper and the rice ball is a layer of seaweed that serves as an edible wrapper that allows you to hold the ball without it falling apart. The spicy pork was absolutely delicious and made me want more. I had the salmon next which was bland by comparison and would appreciate some Japanese soy sauce and wasabi which I didn't get with it. Worth asking for. The soup is mighty good! Especially the oatmeal miso turnip one I had. They are generally miso based and were veg so far. A fantastic snack that may leave you hungry after but really, do you need to be that full after meals? Probably not.

Garlic Shitake Omusubi, fresh off the sauté

Try the new Garlic Shitake Mushroom Omusubi which takes Rie-chan two days to prepare! One of the best eateries in town, hands down, at reasonable prices. The 10-grain Amazake fermented rice wine (non-alcoholic) is also an amazing health treat for those who want to go all out, almost filling in itself, perfect for a picnic or a daytime treat.

This place was a few blocks away and maybe because it was 9pm on a rainy Sunday, we had no problem getting a seat right away. I ordered their SPICY MARGARITA. It was spicy and so good! For dinner I picked the prawn rice bowl. That, too, was spicy but it was really tasty. It contained 6 prawns covered in some sauce that contained a lot of flavor. I would have licked the bowl. We were hungry so the 23 min wait for our food felt long. But ultimately it was worth it. The two ladies helping us were very nice and even with one mis-communication, served us well. .

It's also been a reliable spot to be able to book tables for large groups. However, they have poor problem resolution if there are any issues that arise. Their food is all pretty good and drinks are fairly priced. Their staff are what I would call elusive and very no frills--beyond your first order, they're a bit hard to flag down to order additional items, settle bills, or otherwise. We had an incident where my friend ordered an alcohol-free beer, but when received, they had a sip and suspected it had alcohol in it because it tasted like the regular alcoholic version. We asked the staff to confirm if the drink they poured was actually alcoholic beer on tap, or if it was an emptied can of the alcohol-free beer. The staff came back and apologized, saying it was the alcoholic beer and poured from the tap but the order placed was indeed the alcohol-free beer. My friend then requested to have the can for the alcohol-free beer instead of poured in a glass to be safe, because she was pregnant. The staff then realized the gravity of the issue and went to get the can, saying we can keep the other glass. A few minutes later, someone who I presume to be a manager came over to say she had clarified the situation again and that it was actually NOT the alcoholic beer--which at this point we weren't inclined to trust. The manager did not apologize, but instead said that a bit of alcohol is okay when you're pregnant... We didn't say anything or raise a fuss, just smiled awkwardly. We left not too long after, and we were charged for the mistaken beer as well. This experience put a bit of damper on going to this place, as it was a frequent spot we visited for decent happy hour specials. However it's evident that staff do not know how to handle special circumstances, nor do they seem to have high EQ. If you are a person with no dietary needs, no wheelchair or crutches (because it's cramped as hell and the washrooms are located on the 2nd floor), not pregnant, and no allergies, then this place is probably fine. But if you have any of the above, then you should skip it in case of incident.

I had a solo meal and asked the waitress for help and I loved how helpful she was. Richmond Station is well liked because of their hospitality, tip included structure, and fresh ingredients. I opted for the beef tartare as my app and the station burger. These were both amazing! The beef tartare came with a little bit of shaved veggies and a side of russet potatoes. The station burger was the best burger of my life. I had originally wanted to order the duck, but knew at my first bite exactly why Richmond Station is so popular. The burger came medium rare and was pasture raised beef with aged cheddar and chutney. The fries were a tiny bit burnt but still good, and the aioli it came with was great. Yum! Loved my meal here and would definitely come back for the tasting menu next time!

We came here to celebrate my mom's birthday and chose the tasting menu. To start, we were served a small bite of salmon tartare, which was quite flavorful. The scallop appetizer was refreshing, while the asparagus course felt a little underwhelming as a standalone dish. The two main courses were the highlights. The wild Quebec bass was fresh, tender, and perfectly cooked. The chicken was incredibly juicy and well seasoned. Although it came with a butter-based sauce, it wasn't heavy at all and paired perfectly with the bread. For dessert, the first one was a bit too sweet for my taste, but the ice cream was quite tasty. The six-course tasting menu was just the right amount for the two of us, although it might be a little small for bigger appetites.

The restaurant is bare bones, but has a nice bench seating that spans the length of the seating area, a garage door opening to the street, and a small bar area near the kitchen. There is local art on one side of the wall and graffiti style decor on the opposite wall and washroom (which you can pickup one of the provided pens and tagged it yourself). The cajun fries are soft potato wedges coated in chili flakes and paprika. It comes with what looks like the burger sauce as dip and is tangy and finger licking good. Eating at Heartbreak is a messy affair. The portions are great for the price, the chicken is hot and fresh, piled high with coleslaw and sweet pickles on a brioche bun. The owner seems to be the soul (pin intended) cook, served us, did cash, and took care of the guests. Overall, the chicken was crispy, lots of meat, will be back to try their mac and cheese. The restaurant is in Kensington Market, just a short walk from the TTC. Lasagna This is pretty much what I expect from a good lasagna. The top had a nice golden crust while the pasta layers underneath still had great texture. The meat sauce was packed with well-browned ground beef, giving it a rich, hearty flavor, and the melted mozzarella tied everything together beautifully. The tomato sauce was a little more acidic than my personal preference, but overall it's a well-executed lasagna with solid fundamentals. Tiramisu You can usually trust an Italian restaurant to make a good tiramisu, and this one definitely delivered. The first bite was full of coffee and liqueur aromas. The mascarpone was rich without feeling heavy, and the ladyfingers were fully soaked while still keeping just a little structure. What impressed me most was the balance between the mascarpone and the ladyfingers--they melted together into one smooth, moist bite instead of feeling like separate layers. At $9, it's the kind of dessert I'd happily stop by and pick up even without having a full meal. Even though the weather wasn't great today, this tiramisu definitely brightened my day. Happy 3rd anniversary! Wishing the restaurant many more successful years ahead, and I'll definitely be back to try more dishes.
