Walked into this restaurant and was seated at a table where my family and I were completely ignored. My kids were excited to eat here so I approached the manager kindly just making them aware we had been sitting at a table for 20 minutes, 2 tables came in after us, and they had been served. I live very close to this place however I've only gone a handful of times because this is not my type of Mexican however yesterday with horrific weather and not feeling well enough to make anything I ordered from here, honestly, because it was the cheapest delivery. I got the Gran Papi, a smorgasbord of different items. It would not let me get delivery unless I spent $20 so I also added chips and guac to the order. Came in after going to the LEAD festival that was right behind the restaurant. Found parking easily surprisingly, there was no wait when we got in. The place is a little out dated and the place inside is ok, clean but not like super fancy BUT the food was sooo good! I was very happy with my chimichanga and my boyfriend was very happy with his combo plate he had. Server was nice, food came quickly and the best part THE BILL! The price was great! On the Border used to be one of my go to spots, especially in college, but in recent years, my experience has fallen short. Today, May 4th... my husband and I went to have some drinks and food to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. When I tell you.....there was barely any indication (other than the attached photos) that it was Cinco de Mayo weekend and the location was pretty much dead. (Years ago, I went to a cinco de Mayo party at another on the border location where the entire parking lot was converted into a party with live music and great specials. I am not sure why all locations don't do this or some sort of celebration being that they are a Mexican restaurant. ) I was unimpressed & bummed, quite frankly. The bowl was really not great either. Yelp asks what could improve...almost everything except chips and salsa which are the best of any Mexican restaurant Despite reminding servers our food should arrive hot again it was barely lukewarm. This is standard and perhaps the kitchen equipment is beyond life??? The experience can certainly be a hit or miss - depending on your server. When we walked in, the greeter was assisting her team members told napkins/utensils. When she came over she seemed to want to sit us ASAP without much of a greeting. Fortunately, the experience changed when our server Ashley greeted us at the table. This particular On The Border should be shut down - like the other ones have been. We ordered 2 to go meals. The portion was laughable on both orders. They looked like kiddie meals. As we received our to go bag, the server tells us they had a shortage of chips so chips were only for dine in customers. How can a Mexican restaurant not have enough chips in the middle of the day??? Gave them a second try after a few months. Waited and waited and no one came to take our order. Left and went next door to Chili's. Better service and food. My family came here Friday night and it was dead that basically set the tone from the jump. After being sat for 15 minutes we had to ask to be seen by a waiter. They don't serve alcohol at this location or soda so our only option was water, strawberry lemonade made from powder or unsweetened tea. People were leaving for this very reason. The floors were kinda dirty and the tables were sticky. The staff seemed to be doing a whole lot of nothing except for the kitchen cause the food was decent for gentrified Mexican food. Overall, this restaurant was not worth the hour drive or the money spent. We will not be back and don't recommend, maybe try one of their other locations if you're lucky the service will be better and they'll actually have drinks. read more

Our first experience at an On the Border came in 1992 when we moved to Plano, TX. We were happy to see an On the Border open up at the Garden State Plaza (now Westfield Mall) when we returned to NJ. Pretty much your typical Tex-Mex casual food chain restaurant. This is the only On The Border I know of for many miles. In fact, it's the only one I've ever seen in the state, hence why some might not know it's an actual chain. If I were to equate it to American casual chain restaurants, you can say this is the Tex-Mex version of your local Applebee's or Chili's. I've never dined in before, but I have done take out a few times from On The Border and the food is just what you'd expect - casual, hit or miss and a whole lot of calories. Before I ordered, I actually read a few not so great articles on the unhealthiness of On The Border, but since we were sort of desperate for a quick meal, my family and I decided to do a quick pickup because of its proximity. The menu is a what's what of casual Tex-Mex - Tex-Mex style nachos, quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, burgers. You get the point. Nothing is going to be "authentic" Mexican. Some of it will actually taste decent, while other things will downright turn you away for life. In the past, my wife and I have ordered the classic burrito and combos consisting of the different enchiladas (beef, carnitas) they offer. I WILL admit we actually enjoyed our meals somewhat. The classic burrito was shockingly pretty tasty. Albeit it was simple with just ground beef and refried beans inside, but the signature queso they included really, really gave it a boost. In fact, it was ALL about the queso for the burrito. In addition, the combos, which include rice and beans, aren't actually that bad. The enchiladas are not authentic at all, but it's Tex-Mex. It still has flavor and fills your appetite. The one thing that we really loved was the fact that they included 2 huge bags of tortilla chips with our orders. It's surprisingly a large serving of chips and, to be honest, I've never seen so much of a complimentary item included with an order. Is it wrong to say at the end of the day we were satisfied with our meals? Maybe we were starving like hungry hippos, but we really didn't have many complaints. The food wasn't bad. With all of the above said, I do have to admit, we DID order from here because we were using a Doordash deal, but we surprisingly had no regrets about using it here. read more

The person that meandered to the hostess station after putting her drink and phone down at the very last booth to the right where she was sitting as we walked in was probably the WORST greeter/hostess I have ever seen. Everything thing about her/them said she/they absolutely HATES their job. She was super slow, basically showing us she doesn'tcare about the customers or the job. They dragged feet with every step, sloppily making her way to the hostess area. Where they just grabbed silverware and started walking to a table.. didn't bother to ask us "how many people?"..or anything for that matter.. she NEVER said a word to us.... and didn't look at us once.. I thought it was just us.. but she was even worse with the single OLDER guy that walked in... DEAR OWNER/MANAGER: If you have a choice between having people seat themselves (like the OLDER gentleman that she was rude to suggested), or this useless example of an employee, the restaurant would be better off letting people seat themselves or have the servers take turns seating people... check the videos.. you'll be surprised by how accurately I describe the whole experience. Probably been a decade since I ate at this establishment but saw the taco Tuesday special and wanted to give it a shot...what a mistake. The chicken was dry, the beef made me think of dog food, and the brisket was dry and overly salty which ended up leaving my mouth and into my napkin. The chicken quesadilla was alright yet on the smaller side for a portion. Some food was forced down out of hunger, most was left on the plate. I must say the bartender that served my family in the bar area this evening was nice....but at the same time it did not make up for the food being inedible and she should of asked why our food was still on our plates and we didn't want to go containers! I picked this spot to get lunch for my clients. I arranged an 11:45am pick up and they accepted the order. I arrived at about 11:43 and tried to open the door and there was a sign saying they weren't open til 12:30. I became livid. I called the caterer and ran to the Chili's next door to try and order from there. When the catering company got in touch with the restaurant first they wanted me to knock then I finally figured out there was a to go door. There was no sign or anything. When I asked for my meal the manager said 5 more minutes. It was 12pm at this time and I was already late. 20 minutes later they came out with my food. Talk about being livid. When someone says a "HUGE" serving of chicken you'd expect more than 2-3oz of chicken in a sea of rice and tortilla. Even the pico was in short supply. Came on a weekend night and there was no wait. Friendly staff. Plenty of seating with social distancing between tables. The food itself was hit or miss. Chips are thin and crispy; salsa was good and medium spice. We had the flautas which were 1.5/5 since they were small with not much meat inside. I have had better elsewhere. It's your average watered down version of Mexican food. I'm not sure what customers expect when they dine here, but I hope it's not the "best enchiladas" of their life. In any event, for a chain, the food is darn good in my opinion. I won't deny that. This was my first time dining here and my experience was really positive. My ratings are from 1-10. 1 being the lowest, 10 the highest. Service and staff: 10- the servers and staff were extremely sweet and helpful. I called ahead of time to ask about a wait, and they said "no wait, come on in!" My server was a polite women who was extremely attentive and accommodating. My daughter has a severa allergy and when I asked her about a certain drink, to make sure my daughter can have it, she said "no, I think it's just water and Juice but I will triple check." She proceeded to get on her headset and got an answer within seconds to confirm the drink was safe. I value her honesty and prompt attention to my concern! Food: 10- Again, watered down Mexican food but it's still so good. I ordered a grilled chicken bowl, the chicken was actually fresh and white meat, and seasoned to taste! My husband had the steak fajitas. He enjoyed it and the steak was not chewy. I wasn't thrilled about the frozen margaritas. It was too sweet for my liking. More sugar than taquilla. I'm not saying not to order it, some people love sweet margaritas, it just wasn't for me. Pandemic precautions: 10- tables AND chairs were sanitized after every guest, tables were feet apart, and plexiglass were set up on the booths. Good ventilation. All staff and servers wore mask. I literally seen a server sanitizer all chairs and tables after a family of 6 left. After that another server, who wasn't sure if it was cleaned down, proceeded to clean the table again, lol. Better safe then sorry. Overall, I would go again! I enjoyed the free chips and salsa and my tasty Chicken bowl. My friends and I do love Mexican food. There are more 'authentic' places but really like the flavor and selections from this establishment especially the chips and salsa. Located by the Garden State Plaza mall off of Route 17, we came yesterday to catch up for dinner. Being Monday, parking and seatings were not a problem. We each got their bolder border bowl consisting of cilantro lime rice, black beans, toasted corn, queso fresco, shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, lime crema and sliced avocado but as a protein selected one being grilled chicken, another portobello mushroom and the last grilled shrimp all brushed with their cilantro lime chimichurri sauce. The size of the entrees were on the smaller side but it was enough considering they gave out free chips. All in all for a chain restaurant, the quality of food is so tasteful with good prices but a little bit of a wait for our food. We could recommend this place. read more

The waitress was barely helpful. She has an unresponsive personality which made our ordering process that much worse. Our kids have food allergies and as we explained them to her she didn't seem to care at all. An extra star to one of the kitchen cooks who came out to double check on our allergy restrictions. However, None of the food was good. Steak was super rare, veggies were not cooked, rice was half cooked. We asked for yellow rice and was not given a reason why we didn't get yellow rice until after we had to flag down the server to ask why only to find out it had dairy, one of our allergies. Soft Corn tortillas way too hard. Bathrooms were disgusting. Nothing was cleaned as there were toilet paper all over the Wet floor. Stains all over the urinals and baby changing table was not properly stowed. After I came back to my table and looked under the table with a flash light, there were many food scraps left over from previous customers. When living in the area, I always ordered takeout from this restaurant and dined once. The dining experience wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Great customer service and great food. I usually get the 3 cheese enchiladas with ranchero sauce. Sometimes I will get the blanco queso enchiladas as well. Rice and beans are okay but I have experienced better rice and beans elsewhere.
