He provided details on the process and cost. We set a time for him to come to the house. He showed up as expected and got to work. We chatted for a bit and he took the bikes into his truck. About an hour and a half later the bikes came out looking brand new. It had been a while so Joe fixed several issues during the tune-up. I'd highly recommend On The Fly Mobile Bicycle Repair. Started by texting the business and got a reply within 15 min.. Within 2 texts, had answered my questions and started to connect my son and the shop owner for a next day appointment. Seems owner already had an appointment nearby, so added us behind that one. Next day I got a text from my son saying how much he enjoyed the experience and meeting the owner. Full service with 2 tires changes was about 45min.. Price was per their advertised pricing. To me, this service was worth it based on the convenience and time savings. Highly recommended!! Joe responded to my text immediately and set up an appointment. I am not very knowledgeable about bikes, my bike was grinding very hard when I pedaled, so I had asked for a drive train cleaning. When Joe arrived and saw my bike, he immediately recognized that all it needed was a new chain, and replacing the chain was actually less expensive than what I initially asked for and saved me some money! I found Joe accidentally as he was making a call at a neighbor's house. I brought out a wheel with a broken spoke that he replaced in a snap. Then he filled it with air and balanced the wheel. 2 years ago, this would've been a great review- the nice guy "Joe"who fixed my bike for a reasonable price and who I trusted to go back to somehow became not so nice. It was almost 3x the price when I went to pick it up (it's an old bike and not worth anything- if he would've told me, I wouldn't have spent $50 on it- to which he told me it would've been $50 for just an estimate anyhow) and then he told me I shouldn't ride it because it needed new tires which he didn't have. I watched as he ordered them online for me $75 plus shipping and took my unridable bike home. It's been a month- finally I texted him to see what was going on- he sent me a link to tires which I could purchase and said the site I saw him ordering from ended up not having the inventory and then said that he doesn't order items without a deposit. To say he had a communication problem is an understatement. There were no apologies from him and he acted as if he really didn't care about or knew what costumer service was. I've been waiting for these tires for a month- I could've gone somewhere else- I'm sure they would've been nicer and I would've had my bike to ride sooner- if I get any riding in now, I will be lucky BUYER BEWARE- seems like a nice guy but is NOT! read more

Joe offers extremely reasonable pricing for bike tuneup and repair, all from the back of his fully stocked van! The way it works is that you call and make an appointment, then the On the Fly van drives to your place and fixes your bike right up. Joe is really friendly and knowledgeable and is willing to give tough jobs a try. I had stripped the screw on a disc brake rotor when trying to replace it, and he went so far as to saw/drill it out. This is a great service for people who have a bike, don't own a car, and don't have a (reasonably priced) bike repair shop in the area. If you're thinking about getting that carectomy, this makes it all the more doable. read more

Nobody wants to look like a dink rolling their out of tune or broken bike down the street, even if the closest shop is only a 1/2 block away so the fact that he swoops in and gets the job done is amazing. Can't recommend On the Fly enough. We had 3 bikes at our house that each needed small repairs that we couldn't take care of ourselves. I couldn't imagine having to get all three to a shop, let alone be without them while they were repaired, especially as they are my kids' main source of transportation. I purchase a second-hand bike and wanted to get it tuned and make sure it was safe. During the busy bicycle season, I figured it would be a while before I could get an appointment at the bike shop. I first emailed about setting up an appointment to fix my bike and the email I received back was unwelcoming and short, as if my asking to get my bike repaired was an inconvenience to him. I understand that it's easy to misread tone in email so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and scheduled a repair. He did not give me any time frame for the repair and said he would be there "Tuesday night". So I rearranged my schedule to be home that night, only to have him no-show on me. So this is an absolutely true story. My best friend Anna got me a pink bicycle for my birthday in June, which I named Roxie. She ordered it from Target and had it delivered to her office in the Loop. Being bike-owning virgins, and having mild dementia as we do...we fully expected the bike to be delivered in all its shiny pink glory, fully functioning and ready for me to ride home from her office. Haha. What we received (obvious to most of you I'm sure) is a big cardboard box with Roxie in about 20 pieces and a list of necessary tools that we neither had nor knew where to locate. Apparantly some guy named Allen has a bunch of wrenches. Whatever. Since my favorite solution to most dilemnas is "throw some money at it", we found out about On The Fly, and Joe was sweet as sugar and agreed to come to Anna's office to put together the bike. The following calamity ensued: 1. Joe had to drive around FOREVER trying to find a spot to park the mobile repair shop at rush hour in the loop... 2. Once he did he had to go up to the 198th floor or whatever, retrieve the box of Roxie, and haul it alone in the elevator to his van. 3. After putting much of Roxie together he realized a something or another was bent during shipping and would make the bike unsafe. After calling us to let us know, we proceeded to ask him the most unusual request I'm sure he's gotten in a while: "Will you drive the two of us to the nearest Target so we can return the bike?" And Joe, being the sweetie pie that he is, did just that!!! Anna and I hauled our butts into the back of his bike repair/ice cream truck and he drove us around the city to a Target that had the bike in stock, then hauled the box of Roxie over to a shopping cart and brought her into the store for us!!! He never asked for a single thing! We loved him and he's great so give him a ton of business...even if you have a car, or a convenient bike shop...it's really fun to just be lazy sometimes.
