In this day and age of big box stores and online shopping I increasingly value and seek out brick and mortar stores that specialize in a specific product and as far as bicycle stores go, Edgebrook Cycle very much scratches that itch. Whether you're looking for a new bike, or getting a tune up on an old bike, or just seeking out an accessory, you will find exactly what you're looking for here. This is the type of place that is both organized and seemingly has everything you're looking for, it kinda feels like a bicycle shop from a movie (and it smells like brand new bicycle tires ). But most of all, after buying a new bike, getting a tune up on an old bike, and purchasing a few locks, I received a hand written thank you card with a sticker! That is the kind of gesture that buys permanent loyalty from this customer. My only quibble is that they should get stickers of their business logo since it's pretty dope looking. read more

Absolute rip-off. $140 to replace the brakes on a kid's bicycle. Bought a new bike for my daughter. When I was putting it together, I couldn't get the brake to work properly. So I brought it in to the service area at Edgebrook. Told the guy what the story was, pointed out that this was clearly a brand new bike (there's still a bar code sticker on it!). He told me he'd have to replace the calipers. $40 for parts and $20 for labor. Fine. High, but easier then sending the whole thing back for warranty and getting a new one. Luckily, I had the presence of mind to ask him before I left if that included dialing in the brakes so that they worked properly. He said "No, that's a different service. It's $80 for a tune-up". He wasn't even going to calibrate the brakes after he replaced them! So, just to be clear: he wanted $140 to replace and properly calibrate brakes. (Which, btw, is barely more than the bike cost in the first place). Took the exact same bike with the exact same story to a different shop (Rudy's Bikes on Irving Park, if anyone's wondering), and they quoted me $20. Big difference, and I know where my money is going in the future. It won't be Edgebrook, and I suggest you find other places to take your bike. read more

They make up "policies" on the spot and they are rude. Called in advance to see if they could help with a minor front brake disc that sounded like it was rubbing. I probably could have fixed myself but I like to support local businesses, and this was my first fat tire bike. It's also electric, which is mentioned on the phone to Chris. When I came in a few days later I was told "we don't work on eBikes because of 'liability'. I was confused and told them I'd spoken to Chris earlier in the week and he literally said, "yeah bring it on over". He said the policy was "brand new". Uh, ok, sure. My guess is it was busy and he didn't want to be bothered? But hey, at least he was condescending and rude about it haha. This blows my mind. It's not like this is my only bike. I spend a decent amount of money on biking and accessories every year - and they aren't getting any of it now, ever. Why would I give them a dime when this was my first experience? I guess business is good enough for them they can treat people poorly and turn away customers that will literally cost them thousands of dollars in revenue that will go to other shops / vendors. I will also recount this story to my fellow cyclists new to the NW side. Epic fail Edgebrook cycle; be honest with people and don't jerk them around and you'll have a customer for life. This staple of the community is a great LBS (Local Bike Shop). Stop in and get your ride on! As a tall guy I wish they had a larger selection of bikes in stock, but it's a small shop and they have everything else that a rider would need. Service is excellent and the staff are knowledgeable. I am so glad that a friend recommended this shop. I have been to many bike shops over the years and have often felt that the mechanics cannot break things down well into layman's terms. I am an amateur cycling enthusiast, not a pro, and a not a mechanic, but I want to feel like I know what is going on with my bike. I brought my triathlon bike to the shop last week and cannot say enough positive things about the mechanics there. Rob was knowledgeable, kind, and explained everything he was going to do on my bike (including tune-up, new tire, new tubes, new chain, new cassette, etc). He also assured me that he is experienced with triathlon bikes from having worked at triathlon shops previously. When I picked up my bike today, it looks like brand new. After going to many stores looking for indoor cycling shoes and someone who could explain them to me, I found Edgebrook Cycle. Chris helped me to try on many different brands and styles and spent over an hour making sure I got my questions answered and the right gear for me and even some accessories to enhance my experience. The prices were very competitive and fair and the service was amazing. This shop will definitely be my go to place for all my cycling needs. This appears to be a family run business with people who honestly care about the customers and explained all the details I needed to know about proper fit, the return policy (cycling shoes generally can't be returned after they have mounted since they wouldn't be new anymore); however, defects could absolutely be returned. read more

Unless you buy your bike from them or own a bike that they carry they talk to you like your stupid. Great shop to find all kinds of interesting and needed doo-dads & knick-knacks for your bicycle. Their prices run pretty expensive and they've been in business for more than a decade. Serving the Edgebrook area for many many years. With the Forest preserve nearby it offers them alot of walk-in business, for you the Forest preserve enjoy-er (I think;) they still offer bicycle rentals. As far as bicycle repair. I brought in a slightly used bike I bought at an auction for $20, still ride worthy and gears in pretty good shape. Original value of the bike is $150. I had their experts have a look at it and call me with an estimate. They quoted $180!! Still they knew the original value of the bike. If your buying a new bicycle for yourself or your kid and you want professional service & product, then you shouldn't mind their cost and check them out. If you are bargain hunting, there are many other places to check out. I have to give them 3 stars because they do have good customer service and knowledge of their products. While I really liked how informative the staff was and how they were aware of how important it was to take covid seriously, they really failed me when I needed understanding. My partner took my wallet for groceries and I forgot to get it back from her. When I arrived to pick up my bike and realized I didn't have my wallet, I had my wife text an image of my credit card and ID per Edgebrook's instruction. Although it was obviously me on the ID image, and the service rep knew it was my bike (we had a long conversation when I dropped of my unique/rare bike), they would not charge my card. They asked if i could do apple pay, but i don't have that service. They would not take a Paypal payment either (just as secure/verifiable as apple pay). They said it was to protect me and them, so I had to go all the way back to lincoln square to get my wallet. But when I arrived with my card, that has no signature on the back, all they did was charge it. They didn't even look at my ID at all. Now, if having me drive all the way back home was to protect me and them, they would've at least taken time to verify it was my card. They did not. An image of my license with my face on it (I brought my face with me so it was obviously me), an image of my CC with my name and CC number, as well as me being able to verify my CC account by logging in to my account on my phone Is way more verification than what they ended up doing! Instead, I ended up being 40 minutes late to work -wages I will definitely be docked - for them to do way less verification to "protect" both of us! I was really looking forward to using their service in the future, but now I will have to find another shop. It's a shame. read more

Called earlier in the day and spoke to Jim, explained situation with my son's bicycle. Nothing major, but the chain was very loose, brakes were malfunctioning, etc. He said to bring it by any time and he'd be happy to take a look at it. We came by later in the day and Jim did a complete once-over on the bike and fixed everything it needed, and then some. One of the end caps on the handlebar was missing and he popped on a new one. All in all, it took a few minutes. He answered all my questions and was very patient with us. I was half-expecting to get "taken" with the price, but he was so great and the cost was way less than I was expecting. I believe in supporting local business and we drive past Edgebrook Cycle all the time, and I am very glad we stopped in today. Jim was great, and we'll definitely be going back for anything else we need, and especially when my son needs his next bike! read more

I work in the bike industry and frequent a large number of bike shops. I got a pinch flat and needed a tube one weekend and was in the area of Edgebrook Cycle. No problem, I'll just go in and grab a tube. As I walked up to the counter with my flat tired bike, I asked if I could get a 20" tube. Without a greeting, the lady behind the counter told me to get on the black carpet. The conversation proceeded as follows: "what? I just need a tube." "did you not listen? I said get on the black carpet! Didn't you read the sign on the door? " "huh?" I looked back - repairs go in the side door. Ok. I don't need a repair. I need a tube. - lady now comes out from behind the counter to shoo me into the black carpet... "you're being very rude. I just need a tube" "please keep moving back." "ok I'm leaving. You are rude and I'm not giving you any business" - and I'm out. What this lady's problem was, I don't know. Maybe they wanted to keep the floor clean. What kind of bike shop has an entrance where they don't want you on the floor? I get if service/repairs go to a different area. I didn't need either. I just needed a tube. This is by far the worst service out of any bike shop in the Chicagoland area. read more

I came here to pick up a specific bike that was sold out in my size from other dealers. I knew the exact model and size, knew they had it, and knew I wanted it. Talk about an easy sale. Upon entering I told the women behind the counter that I was the guy who called in earlier. She points me towards the bike. "Can I take it for a ride?" "Nope." She stares blankly in my direction. Awkward long pause as I attempt to mount the bike to get a feel for it's size in a clusterfuck of bikes stacked together and waiting to tumble. "OK, ummm, well I guess I'll buy it..." I finally say after determining on my own that it fits. She gives me no assistance, no information, not even small talk. Keep in mind the shop is completely empty. I hate being "sold" anything. I do my own research and make my mind up my own. By the time I'm in a store, I'm ready to buy. But her lack of interaction here was downright awkward. So after all this, I indicate that I needed a few minor adjustments made before the bike would be ridable (it was configured as a single speed with no brakes, needed at least a front brake added for street riding, the parts come with the bike). She goes and asks the guy in the back if he can take care of it now, or if need to come back tomorrow. This is a full 30 min before they're schedule to close. The brake installation should take about 10 min max. As far as I can tell the guy in the back isn't doing anything anyways. He begrudgingly agrees to do the installation, but acts as if it's this huge pain in the ass for him. Keep in mind that I'm about spend over $500 at this place. Anyways, at this point I'm about to say "fuck it" and take my business elsewhere. But they have the bike I want and I can't get it anywhere else. So I step out for a coffee while the bike is getting fixed. When I get back about 20 minutes later, the guy has added the brake to the wrong wheel (I had repeated my instructions at least twice). He tells me the brake would only fit on the back. When I try to argue with him, he gives me no further explanation and goes back to doing nothing behind the counter. Without going into the technicalities, the brake could have easily been fit (and has been since) to the front wheel. Furthermore, you think when buying a brand new bike from a shop, they might be willing to swap out a $10 part to satisfy the customer? Or at least ask before installing it differently than what was asked for? Basically, unless you're stuck needing a repair on the bumfuck NW side, or they're carrying something you can't find ANYWHERE else, don't support this business. Give your hard earned cash to any of the dozens of shops in the city that at least pretend to give a shit about customer service. read more

The only reason for two stars is because Sportif is worse, and I want to be fair. Edgebrook is the Local Bike Shop closest to my house (I don't count Sportif, since it's not a real bike shop). Every time I come in, the owner is sitting behind the counter, playing with his computer. He scrupulously avoids eye contact or greeting, leaving that to his wife, who is competent, if unenthusiastic. I rolled in with my Dura-Ace Cervelo RS, flatted from something on the North Branch Trail across the street, and asked how much to install a new tube. $30 labor PLUS the tube, come back in an hour. Well, we live in a free market, so I declined, bought the tube, and installed it myself. While there, I asked about the Giant Defy they had just unboxed. It was not assembled, but that takes about 5 minutes. I asked if I could test ride it, and was refused. I asked how much, and was told $1800.00. When I asked if anyone bought a $2000 road bike (after tax) without riding it, I was told "yes." Just like that. I'll buy my tubes there if I flat near my house, but that's it. I very much doubt they care, since this level of apathy tells me they're going out of business. read more

Just went by Edgebrook Cycle with 2 bicycles for repairs, brought the first one in and said it had a flat and brakes were weird, went out to get the 2nd bike from the car... came inside and 2 techs were already fixing the 1st bike. He said if you have a few minutes we will have them both done pretty quick... in and out in 10 minutes... super friendly- super service - great to have a neighborhood business that delivers all the way around !!!! read more

A Ferrari mechanic is a glorified bike mechanic so yeah.....the bike mechanic is gonna try to make every penny off you from repairs that they can. I dont mind paying top $$$ for the repairs. Inacurate brake repair quote then wanted triple! Declined the extra 2/3rds of work. Then got a call saying my bike is ready. Go to pick it up and the guys like it has a flat!!! So he saw to it that he got the 2/3rds back. Because he wanted $32 to fix it!!! It wasnt flat when i brought it in. So obviously i rejected that service. They refused to try to air it up so i could see. Guy had a quick comeback on everything. This is a kids bike we are talking about here. So i took the bike to Eriks bikes in skokie on oakton. They show me the tire in question. Theres a rubber strip that goes over the spoke ends. This one was twisted and to the side thus exposing the spoke endings so thats what caused the flat! Nice job Eriks!!! Because when i took the bike to edgebrook cycle both tires were just fine. Eriks gave me a phone quote for $18 for new innertube and install. So why did edgebrook want to charge $32? (Shady). Anyway. Eriks wound up only charging me $8 instead of the $18. You wont find that kind of willingness not to price gouge at edgebrook cycle. Im 100 percent sure they pulled a fast one with the flat. How do you call and say your bike is ready then dont mention the flat? Then just bring it up when you are there! A kids bike is not a Ferrari! read more

This place is the closest bike repair shop to me, but I will never go again. First, they were ridiculously overpriced. Second, the customer service was terrible. I brought my newish city hybrid in for a tune up, and between that and two new tires was presented with a huge bill, including $25 per tire for labor - that's a lot for a service that, had I not gotten new tires, would've been included in the tune-up fee. The technician seemed annoyed that I didn't have a kick stand, and in fact scoffed at me when I declined purchasing one from them. I was told that my tires needed to be replaced because they had been chronically over filled, when in fact I generally under inflate them... she argued with me about this! Finally, when I got my bike back, several days later, the seat was in the wrong place. How hard is it to use a piece of tape and mark the spot? When I brought it back to be readjusted, again I was treated like an inconvenience. For a "mom and pop" shop, this place feel more like it's run by your evil inlaws! read more

I came on a rainy day to buy my 4-year-old daughter a bike with training wheels. We found the bike she wanted within minutes! They checked it out one last time, added streamers to the handlebars and we were out the door! They even helped me load it into my packed car, which was like a puzzle! I decided a few months ago that I'd start riding to work. Luckily, the weather has been terrible so I've had an excuse not to, but that's not the point. I needed a bike and didn't really know anything about them so I ended up buying a used road bike online. Long story short, it turned out to be beat to hell and wasn't going to get me anywhere, not dependably anyway. I read a bunch of bad reviews about this place, but it's right down the street from my office and a coworker recommended it to me. I was kinda worried because of the reviews, but they really helped me out. At first I was going to look at a new bike and there were a few that I liked, but when I told the guy (mechanic?) about my situation, he suggested that I bring in my bike and maybe get it fixed. I brought it in a few days later and the guy went over it all with me and told me what it needed. So my choice was either fixing it up or buying something new. I ended up getting it fixed and it rides great, but I really appreciated the time the guy took with me. I checked out a few other stores but ended up coming back here. I was ready to buy a new bike and he really saved me some money. Plus hopefully he kept my car off the roads for a few months this summer. Nice place, plus great to support local business. read more

Many things are to be said of this establishment. First of all, I brought my bike in because it needed a tune up and a new tire. Tune up meaning i would get a kick stand, a new chain, and a new tire that alone cost about 300$ I put in a special request to save my blown bike tire because i like to keep them as trophies. Almost a week later i came in only to find out that they barely did work on my bike. No kickstand was added and only greased my chain instead of replacing it. After asking about the tire that i requested to be saved they threw it out and ridiculed me about saving an old dumb tire. She insulted my mother after asking to save the bad tire by saying that was dumb. The chain completly broke off almost TWO days after getting the bike back. So i would never reccomend this bike store to anyone because not only are they rude but they dont do good work and they overprice. There are so many other bike stores would be a better option. I'm not a fan and I won't be going back. I've taken bikes here several times over the years and in the end I wished I hadn't. But since they are the closest shop to my house and I like to spend my money in my neighborhood if I can, they were the place I went for repairs and maintenance. At this shop, one gets the feeling that they could just as easily be in the business of selling bagels as bikes, as they don't seem to care all that much about the customer or the customer's bike. Sure, they'll go through the motions, but there isn't any "love" of bikes there. Also, they charge more than some other shops. I think you can do a lot better somewhere else, so give somewhere else a try before you go here. read more

Reading through some of the poor reviews, I wonder whether I walked in to the same place as they did. Stopping by recently I was greeted by a woman behind the counter who was happy to help show me some accessories, responded to my request for info on home maintenance and tools with ease and made some great recommendations. The two guys working in the shop area were friendly, and one of them gladly came 'out' to swap on the new saddle I bought. The shop seems to have a good variety of tools and accessories for an independent LBS. I expect to do most of my maintenance myself (thanks in large part to their tools, books, and guidance!) but I wouldn't hesitate to come to them for the pieces that are beyond my skills. read more

He acted like I was bothering him and wanted to charge me over $200 to repair the bike(which cost just over $200 4 years ago). I opted not to leave the bike and found another shop that will get it in shape for under a hundred. Almost felt like I was dealing with an auto mechanic that was taking advantage of me due to my lack of knowledge. Many other choices that are friendlier and will not gouge you. I went in to this place after I had gotten a flat tire about a half mile in to the North Branch Trail. It was the closest shop. I have gotten numerous tube replacements and figured this would be another pretty standard tube replacement. They said I could go down and get a coffee and they would call me in half an hour when my bike was ready. I waited 45 minutes, and never received a call so I went back into the shop only to find my bike with a brand new tire and everything installed when it only needed a new tube. I was livid! For a job that normally cost around $15-20 in the city, I walked out with a $65 receipt for new tire and tube and labor. These guys are scammers! Most places will call you if they have to put anything new on the bike than what they originally said... Not these guys.. I will never go back here! Stay clear fellow bikers! read more

Avoid this place like the plague! If I could give it negative 5 stars, I would. Stopped in with a minor mechanical issue with my brake lever. The employee straight up tells me that "WE DO NOT SERVICE BIKES WE DID NOT SELL YOU NOR DO WE SERVICE INTERNET BIKES" I told him this is not an internet bike, it is a simple repair. He proceeded to tell me we will not do business. WTF. First of all he was doing me a big favor up front telling me that is their policy. I would not want any LBS touching my bike components that treat customers like that. It is just bad for business. This guy was being a straight up A-hole to say the least. Me and my colleagues that ride bikes have 10s of bikes that potentially will need service. I will make sure I pass the word NOT to do business with this shop ever. We were happy we ended at this bike shop due to a rude customer service by a well know shop in Skokie. My boy needed a simple fix on his bike, he didn't have the right tools to fix it and that other shop apparently was so busy to help even though there was no one there. Right after the other shop owner was so rude, my boy looked up Edgebrook and we quickly drove there. Nate helped and he had great customer service and helped with no complaint. We went back the next day since my boy was still having trouble with the part. Again, Nate with no hesitation helped fix the piece and some. Went in with rear a bike rack and asked if they could fit it onto a Trek Bike. I thought this was a normal question and was expecting that they would sell me a bracket or adaptor of some sort. Was told they needed to look at my bike to know what was needed... Well I brought in my bike as promised and the repair man insulted my bike; called it a "kids-bike". I had just acquired the bike from Working Bikes and was eligible to return the bike. I asked if it was the wrong size for me. Well he he did not respond or explain himself. It seemed he was interested in selling me a bike and pulled other bikes that would accommodate the bike rack. I don't think he was truthful about it being a kids bike. Our conversation ended with the repair man telling me to take my bike rack and leave. Not a friendly bloke. I was also interested in buying a different bike seat but will not be doing it there. I noticed other comments on yelp about employees at this store being rude. I agree. The first time I was there I observed them being nice to other people and the second time I saw the same. So be prepared to spend a lot of money if you want good friendly service here. read more

The owner sold me a previous year's model without telling me, as I found out months later. When I asked about it, he said that the bike company downgraded from the previous years model. When I did the research, that was not true at all. I recommend going to other bike shops as this bike shop seems to put profits first. read more

One of my coworkers is a regular and told me to check this place out. They were absolutley packed with people when I was there (Weekend...sunny day...etc), but they made us feel like we were the only people in the store. We brought in two bikes for service that we picked up at a local used bike sale and Nate (cool bike guy) quickly identified the problems and fixed them on the spot. Also picked up a kid trailer and a few helmets while we were there. Everyone I interacted with was top-notch. I even got a free lesson in flat tires and basic repair. I went to another shop and was made to feel like I was annoyance more than a customer, but the guys here were great. They even joked around with my kids and they really appreciated it. The mechanics have fun with their jobs and it shows. I am happy I came here! read more
