Almost unreal how great this place is. First off, just on vibes, this is an amazing bike shop. You're effectively rolling your bike into someone's living room and they just jack it up and make it all right again. Kelly also fiercely believes in being part of the local community and takes every opportunity to show it. So on those bases alone, it's an amazing community bike shop. What puts it over the top is the quality and mechanical skill. I had a tune up gone bad at another highly rated bike shop in town this year. Nothing too drastic but persistent nagging problems that their best mechanics couldn't resolve despite repeated visits over multiple months and several multi-week stays in their shop. Eventually I just lost faith and brought it into Mack's. They politely pointed out several of the immediate issues (which the other shop had somehow entirely missed), but were reasonably conservative about their ability to diagnose the deeper and more intermittent issues I was experiencing. They quoted me two weeks. Two *hours* later I got a call. They had rebuilt all of the major systems. Everything was fixed, and it was less than a tenth the price of the other shop. Mack's is our go to bike shop - first of all, they are incredibly friendly and helpful. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to nearly all things bicycles but I do know that my teenagers rely heavily on their bikes in getting around town. #2 - Speedy service! I've been able to roll in (literally) and been serviced nearly right away along with affordable prices. I went to Mack's to get a walker repaired. It was missing the left brake, and it was a challenging repair. Everyone in the shop was attentive and kind. I really appreciated the vibe in the shop and the level of care the employees had for their patrons. Thanks to this great small business, I am able to gift this walker to someone who truly needs it. Visiting from out of town and bought a lock from Mack's. Turns out, didn't need the lock so we tried to return it. The store was randomly closed. The sign just read "Closed. See you tomorrow. Love, Mack's". Tuesday, 11:15am, clearly during the "open" business hours posted on their sign. (Yelp lists different hours, so ???) Apparently this is not unusual. There was another guy in the parking lot who also trying to shop. He said "They do this...closed during business hours for no reason. It's infuriating." I try to shop at local vendors, but this is the risk. I guess I get to keep this $40 lock. read more

I do not own a car and my means of transportation is my bicycle and every time I go in the shop Sam the owner and his staff are super friendly and never tell me they are too busy to help repair my bike. These guys know their shi*t. They are smart and professional. Have brought in a few of my bikes, and they make 'em all work. Just yesterday, I brought in a bike with what I saw as a complex issue, with an internal 8-speed Shimano Alfine hub. I was afraid to try to open it up myself, but these guys took one look, and pulled a large strip of cloth that was wrapped around my Gates Carbon Drive belt (that did NOT belong), and said, "Try that for a few days. They are the best. I've had a few tuneups done here, and also brought in bikes for repairs. If the repair is super easy (for them, not for me!) they do the repair on the spot and send me on my way. On a long bike ride and my problem right knee started aching again. So I dropped by Mack's as it was the closest. Went to this place in Evanston and couldn't have been happier with how efficiently they fixed the bike. Most places in and around Chicago had a two week wait for repairs but Mack's took about 15 min for the repair and took to the bike immediately. Overall great experience for a reasonably cheap price.
