I typically send toys that I don't mind losing just as a precaution, but they've never lost anything I've sent with my dog and everything comes back neatly packed in his bag. I found out she "gave her a hug" after trimming each nail! I love that my two dogs are the only ones present while she grooms them. She has her own dog there but not in contact with ours. We were spoiled with having a mobile groomer for seven years that came to our home and performed a bath & groom in much less time. You get what you pay for!
