I left a review for this establishment about two years ago, and I had nothing but great things to say back then. Now, two years later, nothing has changed and I mean that in the best way possible. All of the instructors, coaches, and professors are still amazing. I never left and I'm still training Jiu Jitsu here as an adult. This review is long over due but I have been going to One Jiu Jitsu Redlands for awhile now so I figure it is about time! The environment at One Jiu Jitsu Redlands is awesome. The price is very reasonable and they have classes almost everyday in the early mornings (6AM), afternoon, and evenings (one at 6PM and one at 7PM), giving you no excuse not to fit class into your schedule! They also have a kid's program during the weekdays and open mat during the weekends. The gym is very clean and I see the mats get wiped down daily in the evenings after class. Coaches remind everyone daily to keep their gi's clean and nails trimmed and I have never rolled with anyone who I felt was not practicing good hygiene.  One Jiu Jitsu Redlands has a very friendly vibe. I haven't met anyone that was overly aggressive or trying to hurt anyone. With that being said, the quality of instruction is top notch and if you or your kids are interested in competing you will have plenty of members to roll with that will push you safely to your competitive limits.  If you are interested in joining One Jiu Jitsu Redlands I recommend stopping by during one of the classes. The owner, Rob, is such a personable and nice guy and I have never seen him pressure guests into joining. Before arriving, I spoke with the academy's owner, Rob to inquire about class times and drop in fees. Despite my offer to pay a drop in free, he insisted the class would be free. Not only that, but when I arrived in a black gi, he allowed me to borrow a white gi to comply with the academy's uniform code. The inside of the academy is well lit, well organized, and the atmosphere is very welcoming, which for newcomers is a huge plus. Very very pleased with the experience, and will definitely be back. Don and Matt (Black and Purple Belt holders) are great instructors and made me feel welcome as an adult new to the sport of martial arts. It can be intimidating starting a new sport and this gym is more welcoming and ego free than other gyms I have visited in the area. The price point and energy at this gym speaks volumes and for itself. The impression I get is that they are more about the sport than the money which is hard to come by these days. Specifically I liked how the instructors would take me aside during practice and help me improve on an individual level. Two of my children have been attending this academy for the last 6 months. My 7 year old son was previously training in Taekwondo, but I began to feel like belt promotions were handed out instead of earned. I also felt like his taekwondo training was not geared toward actual self defense. Plus, the constant fees for belt promotions/gear and the ridiculously high monthly dues were just getting out of hand. This led me to begin looking for a Jiu-Jitsu academy. My daughter is mostly fearless and competitive, but my son is/was somewhat timid and uncomfortable with physical contact. I wanted to find a school where my kids would be comfortable, and that is exactly what I found at this academy. Don, Ryan, Matt and the rest of the instructors provide instruction in a way that is firm, practical, and fun. Everything is earned (even water breaks LOL). Kids are required to treat each other with respect in a fun competitive environment. My children were eased into the process, and Don seems to know exactly when they are ready to jump into the mix. My son has already shown increased confidence both at the academy and at home.......and my daughter can't wait to get to Jiu-Jitsu class after school. I think she would go everyday if she could. The best part is that they know if/when they receive a belt promotion it will be earned through sweat and hard work, not just because dad paid the monthly bill haha. As an added bonus, they were allowed to try out the classes for two weeks absolutely free before signing up. Let me begin by saying that I have been training "stand up" for 6+years. I have ZERO game on the ground. I have no prior wrestling experience, no prior jiujitsu experience and most of all, i am like most people a tad (use this word generously) out of shape. I first met the good folks at Redlands RJJ a year ago and i should have posted about them then, but i didnt due to lack of motivation and honestly, I didnt know you could yelp something like this. I came back to RJJ and I must say, It is as good if not better than when i left. Lets start with the instructors: Awesome. Each one brings their own perspective to the sport. -Don: A technical wizard. He is like a book of Jiujitsu. Everything is meticulous down to the details to ensure you get it down cold. -Jeff: He adds practical sense to the big picture. Very hard to do. But his tips and tricks will pay dividends. Next the classes: Jiujitsu is all about structure and function. Much like the actual sport, the classes are set up to provide the student a structure from which to build techniques and carry out a specific function. Yes, this may seem daunting at first but if you have the patience they will work with you to build up your skill set. Lastly, the environment: In the year 1215, a group of feudal barons in England drafted a letter to the King at that time to proclaim that his will was not arbitrary in the leadership of their country. What does this have to do with the BJJ and more specifically, Redlands RJJ? Everything. Your training partners, other students and the team as a whole mandates what needs to be worked on and what new strategies need to be further evaluated. The instructors get inspiration from the class as a whole and rightfully so, the "Spirit" of the Team is reciprocated. In short, training is tailored to you, the individual. Something very hard to do in a team sport. But these guys have done it and everyone is always welcome. Below is a good summary of the above, should you chose to skip to the cliffs notes: Jiujitsu GI: 80 dollars New Belt: 20 dollars Rash Guards: 50 dollars The feeling you get when your pant leg gets tapped on twice while sweat drips onto the mat after finally nailing a move you have failed in weeks past: Priceless. If you just want to learn basics or compete there's something for everyone here. I had to switch academies due to work schedule but I can't say anything negative about this place. I have been training in martial arts off and on since 1975, beginning with judo, then high school wrestling, and in earnest in 1986 with Karate and Tae Kwon Do. Brazilian Jiu Jistu fascinated me for its logic, progression and applicability, and I have trained regularly in several schools for this art since 2006. I can unreservedly recommend this school for its atmosphere--so many of "us" become family and friends on Facebook and after hours elsewhere--and friendly approach. This is not a "hard core" school that would satisfy advanced MMA fighters, but an excellent entry-to-mid-level school that provides an excellent foundation in grappling theory, attitude and technique. The students are a reflection of the instructors, and you can find that at this school, the students welcome you at your level, adjusting their efforts to yours for an incredibly safe training experience. There is none of that "attitude" or mat ego that a few places have. Women, children and guys of all ages and background train here, including several physicians, students, and regular "blue collar" types. If you're thinking of a place to begin learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and self-defense, just come by and watch a class. Take a moment to observe the expressions and interactions of the students and instructors. You will find that there are few places where you can begin from "scratch" and learn so much. Stick it out and you will not recognize yourself in six months. PS: the only reason I leave out a star is that this school does not incorporate "no-gi" training (training without the classic Kimono), because for some competitive grapplers, that is a shortcoming. If you are not interested in competitive "no-gi" training, then this is not an issue. read more

I send both of my kids here. one's going on 3 years and the other been here for a year. Prior to attending we were looking for a martial arts that would be practical, teaches discipline, and that has teachers that are firm but good with kids. You'd be surprised how hard it is to find a place with these basic qualifications. We found this place by accident when we attended a friends birthday party here. Master Don managed to control a room full of rowdy boys who never participated in BJJ, yet maintained an atmosphere filled with fun. That's when I decided to send my kid here. I've been very happy with this place.
