I was on a Girls Road Trip with high school friends. Our trip took us from Mendocino County north to Ferndale, Trinidad and back down through the Redwood National Forest. We were staying in Garberville and wanted to taste some Humbolt County wines. We call Briceland Vineyards to see if we could taste that same day. Andrew the winemaker was working on a project but was kind enough to accomodate us at 4pm (just 2 hours after our call). We arrived a bit late and he was there to greet us with a smile. He invited us to taste on is patio in front of the winery. He brought out two cases so we could try a variety of wines to include: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, PET Nat Sparkling, Rose of Pinot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a bonus wine of Arneis. Its rare that you sit down with a winemaker for over and hour and learn about winemaking. He really educated our group. His wife brought out a beautiful charcuterie board with cheeses, meats, nuts and fruit. I am a wine member at many wineries in other California regions and have never experienced such GOOD winetasting. On top of that every wine we tasted we liked which is also very rare. The Sauvignon Blanc was light and grassy. The two Chardonnays were unlike the heavy oak and butter types that are too big. His red wines were smooth and not too high in alcohol. We left with several cases of wine. I will definitely visit Andrew again when we visit Humboldt County. I highly recommend a visit to Briceland Winery in the heart of Redwood Country. read more

I went here on a road trip to the redwoods and my family and myself enjoyed the time we spent sipping on delicious wines and the cheese boards Andrew's wife put together for us was amazing! Andrew was very knowledgeable of the wines and was a great host! We had an RV so we decided to park right down the hill but the walk up was not bad at all. The outside area for wine tasting was very quiet and relaxing and peaceful. We had one child who was 11 and he found a cat to play with and played with the chalk that was provided for kids. Briceland Winery, Briceland , CA - September 22, 2024 We stayed here as part of the Harvest Host program where you can park your RV for the night and enjoy a scheduled wine tasting. We arrived on a Sunday morning at 10:30 am. Winery proprietor Andrew did a terrific job communicating with us before our arrival to make sure we could find the winery which is tucked away a little ways off the main road. We met Andrew and his wife Rosie when we arrived and Andrew showed us where to park under a nice shady oak tree. It helped dissipate the 90 degree heat later in the day. We got set up and then headed out for Shelter Cove - a windy, steep, 10 mile, 35 minute drive down to the ocean. Andrew gave us helpful advice about using our low gears as we drove down the steep road so we wouldn't heat up our brakes. He also gave us advice about places to eat for lunch (we ended up eating at Gyppo Ale Mill - best fried cod I've ever had) and told us about sights we might enjoy seeing, including the black sands beach. We relaxed when we got back to the winery afterwards and then at 4:30 we did a scheduled wine tasting. Rosie was our host. Andrew is normally also there for the wine tasting, but could not join us because he was processing a new batch of grapes. The experience also included a very nice charcuterie board. Rosie did a great job sharing numerous wines with us and telling us a little bit about each of them. They try to stay faithful to only using grapes from the Humboldt area. We also had the very fine pleasure of meeting a couple of fellow Harvest Host guests Jeff and Patti during the wine tasting. After the wine tasting was over, we bought several bottles of wine and a tasty dark chocolate bar that we had tried as part of the charcuterie board. Rosie let us visit with our new friends on their cozy covered patio as we enjoyed a bottle of wine and chocolate that we had just bought. We had a quiet restful night's sleep afterwards under the pitchblack starlit Milky Way sky. Overall great experience. We stayed at Briceland in our Airstream as part of Harvest Host. The approach from the road up their dirt driveway was intimidating pulling a 30' travel trailer. But the experience at the winery was worth the risk. It is rustic and charming. Andrew is incredibly knowledgeable about wine making. He is an artist coaxing the best expression of fruit in his wines. Everything was delicious. We particularly liked the Chardonnay. The wine tasting included a charcuterie board made by Andrew's wife. The interplay of food and different wines gave us a glimpse of what the wines would pair with. We bought six bottles of wine to take with us as we continued our trip the next day. The campsite was super quiet overnight. The night sky was brilliant enough to see the Milky Way. In the morning we executed a simple backing up k-turn to go back down the driveway. Easypeasy We were delighted to find Briceland in the Humboldt Mountains. It was an easy drive to Crescent City the next day where we shared the wines with our friends from Portland All in all Briceland made a memorable highlight of our trip. Briceland Vineyards is a MUST that will appeal to a wide range of visitors. For the wine enthusiasts this needs to be a destination. For RV travelers who enjoy wine at any level, this should be on you list as an overnight spot (they are a Harvest Host). The bucolic tasting patio is an idyllic place to nerd out about wines, and viniculture with the winemakers and the conversation can go as deep down the rabbit hole as you want. It is equally beautiful for simple conversation while enjoying wines that are made in the style of old California (more like European style) that allow the grape varietals and local vineyards to take center stage. We spent the night in our sprinter van under spreading oaks, and woke to a chorus of birds - an amazingly peaceful night. This will be a permanent stop on our travels through the redwoods! read more

One of the best wine tasting experience I've ever had. Andrew, the winemaker, personally greeted us and spoke to us about his life of wine professional experience and the history of his winery. He gave amazing service and the charcutery board prepared by his spouse was delicious as well. Andrew took the time to explain to us about each of the 6 wines. My wife, her sister, and I got lucky that Andrew was available to lead an unplanned tasting. We are not educated in viticulture or enology, but Andrew made us feel good about being there, and taught us a lot. His wife joined us and they told great stories. I loved how we all sat around a table talking, sampling wines and the enjoying tasty treats they brought out. Amazing wines with a super friendly and knowledgeable host. My husband is a wine nerd and loves European wines (lower alcohol, less manipulation of the grape and style in general) It has been difficult to find domestic wines that fit the profile that he prefers, but Andrew's wines check all the boxes! Located in an area I would not generally guess to be conducive to wine making ( we are in cannabis country) I was proven wrong and his pinots are to die for! Unadulterated and very pure. He also has a Zinfandel that is true to the grape- not a big oversaturated fruit bomb but a delicious easy to drink sipper. Decent price point considering the quality of the wine. We came here as part of a visit to wine country that included several bigger name wineries in Sonoma. This was my favorite winery that I visited. Andrew and his wife Rosie were exceptionally genial hosts. I was extremely impressed with the quality of the wines that I tasted. Their Pinot Noirs are very well-balanced and underpriced for the quality. I also really liked the Syrah and the Merlot (a barrel sample) which surprised me, as I don't often drink merlot. Nonetheless, it was delicious. My favorite white was the Arneis, which is a relatively unusual grape variety to see in California. I also recommend the rosé of Pinot Noir which is tasty and crisp. They also make a sparkling rosé that was incredibly tasty. Note that they make a lot of different varieties of wine here including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel, so no matter your preference, they will have wine to fit your tastes. Also, Andrew explained that nearly all of the grapes were grown without pesticide, though they are not certified organic because of the costs that are involved. I highly recommend a visit if you are in our around Humboldt County. Just be prepared to bring home a case and then kick yourself for not buying more. read more

I've been tasting Briceland wines for well over 15 years. They have always held a special place in my taste buds because of their Italian traditional style perseverance. However, the past six years or so, they have excelled and over-achieved in their wine-making techniques immensely. I highly recommend all their wines, especially the '07 and '08 Syrah, as well as, the Phelps Vineyard Pinot Noir. I'm not a big white wine fan, but I recently discovered the 2009 Briceland Mendocino County Arneis "Spirit Canyon Vineyard". OH MY GOD! Get some of this on your palate as soon as possible. Wowie Wow Wow WOW! I also recommend that you attend their very rare wine tasting events held at their facility in Southern Humboldt about twice a year. Usually around Memorial Day and then again around Thanksgiving. It is a super casual ambiance with the likelihood of encountering some of the most interesting characters you'll meet in this lifetime. OH! and get there early for the fresh Kumamoto Oysters and Humboldt Fog Goat cheese! By the way... their Briceland Winery Humbodlt Brut Sparkling Wine will launch you into a whole new macrocosm! We love Briceland Vineyards! We have been coming here for years and have become huge fans of their Pinot Noir, Brut Champagne and Sauvignon Blanc. We discovered Briceland on one of our many trips to the Humboldt Country area to visit the Redwoods and Benbow. Each time we are in the area we make an appointment and get a private tasting of their best wines. Sometimes we even are offered Barrel samples. I don't know why, but it seems like barrel samples are always the best! We were just up their recently and tried some of their amazing 2011 Pinot Noirs still in the barrel. If you haven't already, sign up to be first in line for these 2011's They are going to be amazing! They also make a fantastic sparkling wine which is consistently good, year after year. Its probably one of the most dependable Bruts I have ever had. You always know what's going to be in the bottle, and that it's going to be delicious. Twice a year during the Thanksgiving holiday and the Memorial day weekend they do an open house. They pour all of their wines and offer delicious culinary treats. Always a fun time! They are located on the road to Shelter Cove, not that far from Redway and Garberville. Well made wines at very reasonable prices. The Pinot Noirs are favorites of mine, but all of the wines are good examples of their type. If you find yourself on the North Coast you should look for these wines. Most good restuarants in the Humboldt area offer them. Once you try them you will be looking to buy more. Briceland is a diamond in the rough, in rural Southern Humboldt County!! They have weekend tastings, but you might be able to make an appointment at other times. Andrew and his wife are the winemakers on a family owned and developed mountain property. This is the antidote to Napa. Rather, it is a genuine and non-pretentious place where you sit on a rustic deck and discuss wine and life and more under oak trees. And there is some outstanding wine there. As a side note, I appreciate that they generally don't place those covers over the cork area of the bottle which is unnecessary in a majority of instances and which just goes into the waste stream...leave it to the grassroots industry to look at change.
