Prior to a NYC visit I did some reconnaissance and found the One Star Bar. It was less than a 10 minute walk from my hotel. It is a narrow bar with 7-10 beers on draft and some canned beers. We enjoyed the Narragansett pounder cans at 6.00 each. The best part is we arrived a little after 730 on a Saturday which is trivia night. My wife and I had a strong showing. Attentive bartenders, fun environment, fair prices, I'd highly recommend the One Star. Definitely a bar to look out for. read more

I'm gonna completely betray the name by giving this place 5 stars instead of 1! Wink It's a fun little dive bar, and I love the tables decor have unclaimed/expired credit cards underneath - that's hilarious! The drink selection had the basics, though I did enjoy how they had their own version of a "drink bomb" -- Miller High Life + shot of [Jim Beam?]. A friend and I seeked out an unpretentious place to drink and hang out. Bourgeoise be damned! OneStar's self-proclamation as a "...dingy hole. On a deadish street. With cans instead of bottles..." Sounded perfect. And it was. We started with a "High Beam". A 'special' listed on the chalkboard on the wall. A shot of Jim Beam and a tall can Miller High Life ("The Champagne Of Beers") ($9). Perfect. A happy surprise was the handful of actual taps rather than every beer being in cans. A sample of a craft porter revealed a fine brew. Joe the bartender was attentive, friendly, talkative when it became apparent that that was what we were looking for. You know, I had bizarrely always wanted to go to this bar purely because it's called One Star and then go home and write it a review that does not consist of a one star rating. Yes, it's a watering hole, dive bar. No frills. Don't expect much out of it. Average prices. But it was also empty. Which is great during covid. Actually, personally for me an empty bar any time of the year is great in my opinion. The bartender was friendly. The beer selection is decent on tap. I remember they used to do trivia here when I used to be part of a league back in the day. After a few rounds we got a buy back on a beer and even some cheez-its crackers. These are things that truly speak to my heart. I also noticed they have pop tarts here and I didn't find out which flavors but I'm really intrigued enough to some day in the not so distant future to come back and find out. read more

I'm sorry, but I'm not giving this place one star. It's the bar I want to go to after a tough day at the office. Laid back, simple, good music, and cold beer. Could (and have) spend hours here. My friends and I came here after going to the bougie bars New York City offered. This place is definitely a diamond in the rough. It was a great dive bar. It was filled with locals. It was also trivia night so the bar was packed. The bartender was very attentive and always checked up on our next drink orders. They have a decent selection of canned/draft beers for $5-$6 dollars. They also have nightly drink specials. We were having tall boys and a shot for $8. We had plenty of drinks and shots for all under $100. This is the place to go for cheap drinks and a chill vibe without breaking your bank account. The location is kind of hard to find because it's hidden but definitely worth finding if you are in the city. read more

One Star is a perfectly fine bar, though I did find it to be a bit of a 'tweener, in that it has a bit of a dive bar feel, but with more upscale bar prices. Beer list was decent--mostly macro beer standard like Bud Light, but did also have Coney Island Mermaid Pils and a Founders Oatmeal Stout on tap. We had finished a big meal, so I didn't wind up experimenting with the mixed drinks, just stuck with the beer myself. Beer was mostly $8-$9/pint, my friends had beer and wine; four rounds set us back about $128 with tip--thought it a bit pricey for what it was. Bar itself is spacious and dark, but lacked some charm/uniqueness of a true dive--perhaps that can come with time. Ultimately it was fine, if a bit nondescript. I would probably pop in again if I'm the neighborhood, but certainly wouldn't go out of my way just to come here. read more

Stopped in tonight by myself for a couple of vodka sodas before a play. There was a bell hooks quote that I really liked on a stall in the women's bathroom. A nice man offered to get me a piece of pizza from across the street but sadly I had just eaten. I was reading a book called WASTED and when the bartender brought me the check it said WASTED on it and I said, 'I haven't been wasted in years! This is awesome!' and she laughed. Terrible people! Jerks! Vodka sodas were nice though. read more

They might be called one star but they won't be getting that from me. This place is a chill, low key bar with a pretty good selection of interesting beer at the best prices I've seen in NYC. It's not a dive, just a low key place that's clean and neat. They don't serve food other than Cheez it crackers and Pop Tarts and yep I saw people order them both. The place isn't huge but I was able to get a seat at the bar on a weeknight. If you're in the area and in need of a brew this is the place, just eat first unless you want to stuff your pie hole with crackers or pop tarts. read more

Tallboy and a shot for 8$ on a Friday night? Sign me up. Yeah this place is pretty much the best, but then again I do love a good dive bar. But is One Star really a dive bar? I mean, sure it's got cheap beer, and it's not overly nice, but it is somehow lacking the seediness that makes a bar a dive. Take the Patriot Saloon; the second you walk in it's dark and gross, there are old guys chugging PBRs and there is metal (probably) playing in the background. One Star? It's just somehow too nice...maybe it was the clientele hanging out (not overly rowdy or hammered at 1130 on a Friday), or maybe it was the lack of blaringly loud shitty music in the background? All I know is that I ordered up a 25oz bush light for 7$ (don't judge me..or do, whatever) and was able to have conversation above the not blaring music and not screaming people around me. If you're looking for a place to grab cheap drinks near Madison Sq park, you could do far worse than One Star. read more

I was exploring the city on a Friday night and I felt that I needed to use the bathroom. I past by One Star to use theirs (thanks One Star!) but don't worry, I bought a drink after I used their bathroom. I personally thought the bathroom was dope looking with all the tagging on the walls. Was it clean? I meaaaaaan, it was alright. When you gotta go, you gotta go. I've seen this bar a bunch on yelp and thought to myself "one day". Well it just happens that I started a new job right above this place and I'M SO DAMN HAPPY. Kinda dingy lighting, long bar to sit at. Jukebox. $9 beer shot special that isn't shitty pbr and jameson (sry not a jamo fan unless its in a pickleback to wash out the taste). My kinda dive. Super chill. The people that come here like others have said are def a mixed bunch. After work crowds, dates, friends catching up, bros talking finance, solo drinkers - all here. I feel like I should do a bar bingo with this place. Personally, I toggle a lot between drinking solo and drinking with a chill group of people and this 100% serves both needs. I guess it's a good thing they aren't open earlier. You keep doing you One Star. read more

This place is amazing. I don't understand why people give this place 1 star?! (Bad dum tss). This place is priced reasonably and honestly the pop tarts hit just right after a couple drinks. The staff are pretty chill and very friendly and not racist as one review said and this is coming from a Hispanic person. I usually hit this place up with a couple friends and co workers and Everytime we love the time we spend there. Perhaps the people leaving negative reviews are just obnoxious people who are too entitled to enjoy a couple drinks with friends. Either way this place rocks and will definitely go back from some pop tarts P.S keep an eye out for a balloon. It's been floating on the ceiling since forever. read more

By far my favorite bar in Manhattan. It's a mixed crowd, depending on your luck and the day and the time. Sometimes you just have the regulars, sometimes a bunch of corporate fratboys, sometimes an inexplicable combination of hipsters and tourists. But the gang behind the bar are never anything less than delightful and friendly. The drinks are all the basics - nothing fancy if you're a cocktail lover, but everything a good dive should have. Take your friends here or come alone. Hang out at the bar and you'll probably be delighted. I'm gay and have had dates here, and never felt unwelcome. It's not advertised as an LGBTQAI+ friendly bar, but I've always found it to be so. read more

The kind of view that makes you pause mid-sentence and remember you're in New York and not just spiraling in your own life choices. It's carrying the entire experience on its back, respectfully. So yeah. I'd come back... but mostly for the view and the potential. If they ever decide to actually do something with this space? It could be dangerous (in a good way). The Bang Bang Shrimp was decent enough though soggy from the trip. Nonetheless, with the various dips (ranch, Russian and house) it was filling albeit a little breading forward. Service was a little slow, though packing was well done. I enjoyed this meal. I would order again, especially for the Shepherds Pie. Recommended.

For being so close to Times Square, it does not pander to tourists at all. It was all dim lighting and haphazard decor, but pretty roomy, with pool tables in the back. Didn't feel too different from some bars we frequent in Long Beach, actually. The patrons on the night of our visit looked local, and the drinks were cheap--no fancy cocktails here. The only bummer was that their sound system kept cutting out, so the music (of the hard rock variety) was spotty. We felt at home, and were glad we stopped in.

Sounds simple, but it's one of my favorite drinks, and I'm always looking for someone who can do it well. I ordered their "dear G&T" and it was a fruity, complex riff on my old favorite. I also got the foreign forage, "a bourbon smash with a mint zing." It was also a delicious take on a classic. They have several types of cocktails, all broken down by spirit and flavor profile. They also offer a lot of spirits made in New York State. They have cocktails with earthy notes, fruity notes, fancy martinis, and a section boasting limited edition and special spirits, if you're "feeling fancy" and wanna cough up 35 bucks instead of 20 or 25! They have a bar snacks menu (sliders, nuts, and the like). I had their thick cut fries and they were light, seasoned, and tasty. I couldn't stop eating them. Midtown or not, I highly recommend this spot, which also has a couple other locations, including Gramercy.

Plus, it was overpriced; for this dish, you're better off going to Strip House Strip House remains the undisputed king of this dish in New York. A friend ordered the chicken parmesan. It was just average. Another friend ordered the short rib stroganoff. The flavor was decent, but it was far too rich and heavy. As someone whose palate is split 50/50 between Western and Chinese cuisine, I could manage only five bites at most. If you have a palate that prefers 100% Chinese food, proceed with caution on this dish. Friends ordered sides of mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. These are dishes originally meant for low-income Americans to fill up on cheaply; there's no limit to how good they can be, but also no floor to how bad they can get. Both were on par with the average quality found in upscale restaurants. Honestly, these are two dishes I would never order myself. To sum up: the atmosphere was great. It's also hard to get a reservation; the place was packed when we had lunch at 2 PM. Aside from that monkey bread, I didn't feel like anything else justified the price or offered something you couldn't find elsewhere. I don't quite get the hype. Perhaps I just didn't order the right dishes; maybe next time I'll try the burger and the steak.
