Reasons I Like This Bar (worth One Star each). 1. There's a beer/shot combo called the Moron's Delight. 2. They serve Pop Tarts and champagne out of a can. 3. They play obscure Cake songs (among other great music). 4. One of the notes I made for this review reads, "Smells like poop and Coca Cola."* 5. Their cocktail menu is brilliant. For example: A 'Nojito' is Tecate pounder. 6. One of my friends ordered an Old Fashioned (off menu, clearly). The bartender made it using a packet of sugar, and when my friend asked for a peel of the orange sitting on the counter, the bartender said no. Because that orange was his snack, not for garnishing. Reasons I Don't Like This Bar (negative One Star each). 1. They were out of the "Advertise Me, Bro" when I was there. Horrible. Absolutely the worst drinking experience I ever had in this city. I loves me a good cocktail so I asked a bartender for the cocktail menu, a copy of which I have helpfully enclosed in this review. I had lost my job and my significant other left me for someone more attractive than me, so I figured what the hell, gotta get those endorphins up and tried every one on the menu. Let's go over each one from first to last: I enjoyed the first drink I ordered, the "Nojito," but was expecting something much different when I ordered the next, the "Lord Pretensia Caipirinha," only to find it was the exact same drink as the first. WTF? How can their take on the Mojito AND the Caipirinha be the same 16 oz. can of Tecate? Complete lack of originality on their part, and a huge disappointment after I was so looking forward to a good Caipirinha after my two-week long vacay in Rio. "Uh, Something Fruity? Something Different Maybe?" One of my favorite drinks that I order all the time and which most places are HAPPY to serve me. How can you mess this one up? While the barkeep warned me going in that what he had was not fruity per se as different, I can't help but feel the end result was just as disappointing as the last drink. The third nipple on his back was watered down, way too much ice, and so much simple syrup I felt like I was drinking a lollipop. Imagine my surprise, then, when I ordered the next drink, "Anything With Simple Syrup," only to be told that's waaaaaaay too complicated boss. Too complicated? Coming from a professional mixologist under the employ of One Star licensed premises? Unbelievable. "The Classic Manhattan" was a used Metro card, which I needed because I was about to spend all my money here. I should have known to try the card before I gave the guy a tip (which you'll find was the ONLY reason he got anything at all), because once again I was disappointed to find it was a week-long unlimited pass that had expired literally on the night I got it. Who buys a week-long pass? EVERYONE knows you get more of a value if you buy the monthly pass. What, did the original purchaser not think he was going to take a train a week later? "Clickbait" is a HUGE ripoff. Chicken nugget had a barely legible signature, let alone signed by Ray Liotta. Market price is whatever the hell the bartender feels like charging for what its worth to skim off the top for himself. I wanted to throw the barkeep for a loop and order, instead of the next drink, "Knob Creek 18-Year, Neat," a mere house whiskey on the rocks. I was given a Knob Creek 18-Year Neat and charged 18 bucks anyway. For the next mixological war crime, the "Long Island Ice Tea," billed as "made with 4C powder mix from King Kullen," actually had alcohol in it. Gross! I was an astute customer and read all the way down the menu to see "Separate Card Swipe for Each Drink" was an option, for which you receive a free drink! However, as the saying goes, it is true here as it is anywhere that THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A FREE DRINK! Where do I start with this abortion of a drink? The weakest concoction of Isopropyl alcohol, cyanide, hemlock, and Uranium 238 in an ashtray I've ever tasted, so barely there I've had visions of angels that were less ethereal than this drink. Never mind I take small doses of each of those chemicals in order to build up a Rasputin-like tolerance should someone ever try to poison me. Well, excuse me for expecting to be SURPRISED. Also ashtray had menthol cigarettes. Disgusting. Finally, the "Get Drunk Using This One Weird Trick." I had such a thoroughly unpleasant experience drinking here and I was hoping the bottle of butterscotch schnapps they gave me would be enough ethyl alcohol in my system to kill me, because I'd rather be dead than dignify the Trail of Tears they doled out to me by closing my tab, but no such luck. I finished the bottle and added an extra $97 to my tab. They call themselves One Star, as if that's what they want me to give them. I'm not going to give this incompetent dive the satisfaction. This is a wonderful, wonderful bar for so many reasons and has become my go-to option for occasions when Barcade (right across the street) is just way too crowded...which is almost anytime I think about going to Barcade. Love how cheap everything is and, of course, the snack selection. Straight bar with a couple great curves (not snaking though). Middle bar back contains mirrors with beer specials that are hard to read from angle (you're not drunk, it's the mirrors). 4.5 stars... It's a real surprise that you can still hit up an affordable dive bar anywhere in the Chelsea or Midtown areas. Sure most of the drafts are pretty standard at $6 but they do have $4-5 options and beer and shot specials as well. I'm pretty sure the name of the bar is a tongue and cheek reference to what a more discerning Manhattanite may rate this place. Their subtle humor and sensitivities is evident from some of their signs and offerings (i.e. pop tarts). The only complaint I would have about this place is that the sparse and near nonexistent décor is a bit awkward and unwelcoming, almost like it's a bar that hasn't quite finished yet, they could also use some extras that would entice you to stay a bit longer like a dart board or something. Sometimes you want to go to the frying pan and then there's a totally unexpected downpour and you discover that similar to Chelsea Market, the Chelsea Piers has very little to offer you. So I got on yelp and away we went. We practically had the bar to ourselves on a rainy afternoon and this place serves pop tarts - 2 for $3. (Smores, strawberry, brown sugar, etc). Hidden gem. In an area devoid of chill pubs, One Star has been a more than welcome find. The staff are friendly, the beer selection is diverse, they run some good specials, and there's sufficient space both along the bar up front and in the back room. I've been a couple different weeknights and it has never been terribly crowded. They don't serve food but I'm pretty sure you can bring it in. Happened upon One Star once when they were running trivia. Fun evening. This place is worth a visit. Or many visits. Quick update: I visited on a recent Thursday and the place was packed. Compelled to give this place a one star rating just because they're playing Icarus with that bar name. But you know what, it wasn't *all* bad. Just mostly bad. They sell Pop Tarts, so I guess that's a plus. It's trying to be a dive bar with Manhattan prices. So that's $6-7 for a shitty beer that you'd get for $3 in Brooklyn. But hey, that's what happens when you're in Flatiron/Chelsea. My biggest complaint was the older bartender. We waved him down multiple times, and were ignored. A friend ordered a beer, and then he never came back with the beer. Took forever to try to get a drink, and the bar area is pretty narrow, so you're just kinda in everyone's way. I went here for the first time on a Monday, and I loved it so much that I ended up going back 3 other times by the end of the week. I recommended it to everyone I knew, took friends and dates to see it, and now it's my go-to for a few drinks. All of the bartenders are wonderful, the atmosphere is easy to vibe with, and the drinks are good. The beers are $5-$7, and you can get a shot of Jim Bean with a 16 oz beer for $9. They also have poptarts and Cheezits, which is hilarious and convenient after a few beers. Get to know the bartenders! They'll take great care of you. read more

The name may be One Star, but trust me, in the dive bar world, it's a Five Star experience. Classy, friendly and expedient service from Joe and Tracy behind the bar. After a couple of after work visits, I felt like I fit right in. And now there is nowhere that I'd rather be for happy hour--or at any hour, for that matter. Besides Joe just being a great all around guy (Tracy's super nice too), what is so great about One Star, you ask? Well, for starters, they have VERY good prices on beer and mixed drinks--$5 beer with plenty of options at that price, and a $7 glass of well bourbon that might be the best bourbon value in Manhattan. The drinks are all very well made, and I have yet to see anything that costs more than $12--pretty awesome considering that we're talking about Manhattan. I was there with a date on a Saturday night and we decided to try Trivia Night--which btw is 7:30 every Saturday. It's very easy going and you don't get pulled in if you don't want to be. But, if you decide to play, you do have to be aware of the Traveling Trivia Sharks, who really know there stuff. I think I got 5 questions out of about 50, so don't feel bad if you are not keeping up with the Sharks. One small but important thing to add--these guys have a couple of super fast phone chargers behind the bar. One of them charged my Samsung Galaxy almost 50% in 30 minutes! Small thing, but how many places offer that kind of stuff? All in all, One Star is the perfect antidote to Manhattan's generally overpriced bar scene, and the people running the place are superb! This place does everything right from the cheap beer to the "food menu". I decided on One Star for a happy hour after coming across they're rating. 4.5 for a bar?! Unheard of! After a great night there I now know why. Upon picking it I assumed the One Star name was a reference to the Texan Lone Star, it wasn't until I saw the sign in person that I noticed the other 4 stars blacked out...I get it. The best part about this place is that they know who they are and stay in there lane. The "one star mantra" isn't an over-the-top gimmick as I've seen with other similarly themed hipster bars. Places where the servers are trained to be rude and the bathrooms purposefully dirty because "they don't give a fuck what you think"...who likes that? One Star does a great job of towing that fine line. They earn their name in the subtleties like only selling pop-tarts or cheez-its for food, cheap domestic beer, and airing live streams of traffic on their TV's. Yet both the owner, Joe, and the bartender were super friendly and unpretentious (another rarity in a NY bar). In the land of a thousand bars I just wish there were more like One Star. read more

Ambiance = 8.0 It has the typical American Long---- Extended -----Bar.... ,that extends like 30 feet...., with about two dozen bar stools...,then more quiet..,comfortable sit-down at a table have some food in the back. No carved into the bar [ love names ] counter with a key writing..,however you'll get the soft...,low lighting that a bar should have since you will be drinking Vodka shot's , and Beer special's. Beer = 8.0 27.oz can's for a "Bush" Beer for $7..., appeared a little high..,however it is Chelsea..,and the surrounding bar's would be charging more a few block's away. This bar is both super chill and super fun. Came in this past Saturday night for the last round of trivia, and the bar had such a good vibe to it. Seems perfect for either drinking by yourself or with friends. I was told they aren't open on Sundays, which is a bummer for many reasons, not least of which is that it would be a great spot to watch the game. I regret not coming here earlier. Given that there are a dearth of good low-key bars in the area, I definitely found a good one in One Star, which definitely does not deserve a one-star rating. The place has the feel of a dive bar, but is easily nicer than most dive bars in Manhattan. Came here for late late night drinks, and it was one of the more fun times I've had in recent memory. It helped that we were properly sauced before arriving, but the general experience was just really awesome. We were able to get drinks very easily, see what sports were on TV, and just kinda jam out to the music. A lot of the drafts are about $6, which is better price for the area, and the rotating selection is decent. Their canned beers are even cheaper, and there are actually a pretty good selection of the canned beers as well. Also, I'm a fan of the tallboys they have available. Reminds of college (*sheds tear*). Their cocktail menu of the day is pretty funny, with a bunch of creative names, and apt descriptions and prices. Service was great and very quick. Bartenders were friendly, and their demeanor really matched the overall vibe of the place. I don't believe they serve food, but there are plenty of options nearby, and again, the prices are cheap enough to go pretty hard here, if that's your jam, hehe. Will definitely be back for happy hour drinks or again for late, late night drinks.
